I WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. AT GRADY, THEY KNOW CARE INSIDE AND OUT. I was a firefighter paramedic injured in the line of duty. I fell into the basement of a burning house and was severely burned over 35% of my body. As a paramedic, I knew that Grady was where I needed to be taken care of. I spent 38 days there – two weeks of that in Grady’s Burn ICU. The care that Grady gave me helped me with my emotional needs along with my physical needs. They healed me from the inside out.

Last year, right before Christmas, I was at a radio interview for A Christmas Carol with Morgan Gao, who played Tiny Tim. (This year he’s a mouse in The Nutcracker — another most worthy role.) Anyway, the interviewer asked Morgan what was special about Tiny Tim. He thought for a moment and then said, “He really loves God.” I was taken aback as I had never heard him voice this before. However, it does make sense. Tim repeats, “God bless us everyone” over and over again. Tim has a special relationship with God that he equates with blessings — with kindness. Taoist philosophy talks of sages who are childlike, yet at the same time, deeply wise and spiritually mature. And then my thoughts drift immediately to memories of my father, who at the age of 95 left us for another plane of existence this past summer. I recall a razor-sharp mind, a kind word for everyone, great delight in the joys of this world, absolute belief in his Creator … and he was the biggest fan of A Christmas Carol that will ever tread on this Earth. Dad’s spirit and Tim’s spirit live on. May the special events of the holidays bring you great joy, and may we continue to seek out and embrace the simple truths that lead us home. Bah, humbug! Chris Kayser calls it a Christmas after 16 seasons as Scrooge By Kathy Janich

Chris Kayser blusters his final “bah, humbug” this season, he’ll have spent 20 consecutive Decembers in the Alliance Theatre’s A Christmas Carol — 16 as Ebenezer Scrooge, two as Bob Cratchit and two as Jacob Marley. This, alas, is his finale, and not for any scandalous reasons. “It’s a great job,” he says of playing Dickens’ antihero. “You have the full weight of the Alliance Theatre behind you and the words of one of the great writers of our language. I’ve never been sick of it or dreaded it, but I wanted to make sure I stopped while I was still enjoying it.”

during the show’s 2.5 hours and only for brief crossovers backstage so he can make another entrance. Those numbers: • 40 performances per season (counting previews but not rehearsals) • 800 total performances, equal to a Broadway run of almost two years • 1,600 hours spent in Scrooge’s nightcap/top hat (almost 67 days of his life)

The idea of walking away is relatively new.

And seven additional years in the Academy Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, as Cratchit, Mr. Fezziwig, Old Joe and his own creation, Lorenzo the Legless Musician.

“Last year was the first time it ever occurred to me: ‘How much longer can I keep doing this?’ And right away it occurred to me that I didn’t want to stop because I had a bad year. I wanted to have one more good year and stop it on a high note.”

To see Kayser onstage — every one of those 40 performances fresh, sprightly, curmudgeonly — you’d never guess he had such greybeard status. But like athletes everywhere, he wants to go out at the top of his game.

Kayser, 64, began playing ol’ Ebenezer when he was in his 40s, and says “I kind of aged into the role. I started probably too young to play Scrooge, which is probably witnessed by the fact that I don’t have to wear makeup anymore.”

The sports reference is apt. The Christmas Carol grind requires herculean stamina and good health (the latter rarely possible because some bug or another always finds one cast member and spreads from actor to actor like an unchecked storm of holiday cheer).

classes that alternate between body sculpting and old-school weightlifting. He might also swim or take a turn on an elliptical machine. On weekends he plays tennis. And his resume shows he’s just as popular at other metro theaters. He’s been an artistic associate at Georgia Shakespeare for 24 seasons, most recently playing Claudius in the fall production of Hamlet. He was nominated for a 2013 Suzi award (Atlanta’s professional theater honors) for his featured work in Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies’ Time Stands Still at Horizon Theatre. And he regularly works with Atlanta’s Frenchlanguage Théâtre du Rêve. He’ll soon travel to France (the Normandy Coast and Paris) to do a one-person show titled The Animal

of Time, about a man walking through a cemetery and reading the tombstones. “It’s very cool, but it’s a devil to memorize,” says Kayser, who has a bachelor’s degree in French but never took an acting class. In April he’s in Camelot at Georgia Ensemble Theatre in Roswell, as Merlyn and Pellinore. Summer will likely find him back at Georgia Shakespeare. And next Christmas? He’ll no doubt be acting, perhaps even in A Christmas Carol. But not as Ebenezer Scrooge. “I want to make clear I am not retiring from the theater, or even A Christmas Carol,” he says. “Just Scrooge.” To that we say a grateful, and greedy, “bah, humbug!”

Jody is the associate producer at the Alliance Theatre, where she started in 1991 as casting director. While at the Alliance, Jody has cast and produced more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions including a wide range of world premieres including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, What I Learned in Paris by Pearl Cleage, Broke by Janece Shafer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and 10 years of Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition winning plays, as well as world and regional premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County and, most recently, Zorro. Jody is most proud of the thriving Alliance engagement activities and partnerships that recognize theatrical work as a catalyst for community conversation and connection. SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, created local producing partnerships and has overseen regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on projects including Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked at theatres including the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York and is a trustee of Denison University. She is the winner of the Dramaturgy by Students essay contest, with the prize being her essay included in the 13/14 Christmas Carol program. The winning essay digs into one of the most memorable facets of the play — Tiny Tim’s illness — and explores children’s health issues in Dickensian London.

Running ‘medical’ debate surrounds A Christmas Carol’s most endearing character By Erin Malcolm Everyone wonders what illness Tiny Tim suffers from because it’s never named in the play A Christmas Carol. There have been many guesses as to what disease he has, but nothing is concrete. From my research, I’ve come to the conclusion that Tim had a vitamin D deficiency when he was born and it turned into a serious case of rickets. Rickets is a disease that causes bones to soften and is usually found in children. The disease is caused by a long-lasting vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D helps the intestines absorb calcium and phosphorous, two things responsible for hardening bones. In the Victorian era, the smog was very thick and blocked out sunlight, a natural source of vitamin D. Further, breastfeeding infants was the only option and with breast milk lacking vitamin D, this led to bone deformities, slowed growth, muscle weakness and a weakened immune system. Tiny Tim definitely had a bone deformity, slowed growth and muscle weakness, but rickets does not usually end in death.

The most probable conclusion is that his weakened immune system made him more susceptible to diseases. Tiny Tim must have gotten latent tuberculosis. I assume that Tim had an inactive tuberculosis infection and because of his age and weak immune system, it became active. At that time the only treatment for rickets was a brace or crutches and tuberculosis did not have a set treatment. KENDEDA TURNS 10 Anniversary season features new plays from old friends and 2014’s winner

The Alliance Theatre’s Hertz Stage this season is home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The four-show lineup introduces Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America's brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one. The lineup celebrates a milestone for the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago and has grown stronger and more vibrant each season. This one-of-a-kind national competition helps student playwrights in the country's leading graduate programs make the transition to professional theatre. This year’s winner, Madhuri Shekar, comes from the University of Southern California. The Alliance welcomes back Meg Miroshnik (The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, 2012), Tarell Alvin McCraney (In the Red and Brown Water, 2008) and Kenneth Lin (…,” said Said, 2006). Hertz Stage audiences have already seen McCraney's Choir Boy, a coming-of-age story about a gay young man in an all-boys private prep school for African-Americans, and Lin’s Warrior Class, a political thriller about a charismatic Asian-American Republican with ex-girlfriend trouble. Still to come: • In Love and Warcraft. Jan. 31-Feb. 23, 2014. Evie, a master of relationships, is the focal point in Shekar's world premiere. She has a waiting list of classmates willing to pay her top dollar to fix their relationships. How does she do it? By using the skills and tactics she learned while becoming one of the best World of Warcraft players on the planet. • The Tall Girls. March 7-30, 2014. Sometimes basketball is the only way out. Even for a girl. Even in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. When a mysterious young man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear. He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game and he has the only inflated basketball in town. Another world premiere from Miroshnik. These four writers are part of a group of 50 artists to have come through the Kendeda/ Alliance competition. The anniversary season also includes 12 readings and workshops by other alumni winners and finalists. Experiences have already included an exciting portrait of a drag family hosted by the Jungle and 570 people sobbing through a mother/daughter reunion in the face of dementia. discover us discover us. discover you. For the opening scene of A Christmas Carol, our director, Kenny Leon, instructed us to walk down the aisle and greet the members of the audience. I was scared. I was intimidated. I was only shaking someone’s hand, but it was a stranger’s hand and I was young. I mean yes, I could get onstage with hundreds of eyes watching my every move, but the idea of greeting a stranger was paralyzing. Finally, during our eighth show I worked up the nerve. I walked up to a gentleman and reached out to shake his hand. He smiled and indicated to me that he didn’t have a right hand but gently embraced my arm with his left hand and warmly thanked me for greeting him. I realized my simple attempt to follow a direction meant a great deal to the gentleman. I learned everyone needs a warm smile and someone who is willing to exchange a simple embrace.

Our 2013 guide to elite K-12 education in metro Atlanta By Danielle Deadwyler Traditional, new wave, diverse, student-centered, faith-based, college prep, challenging, alternative, Montessori, community, international, competitive. This isn’t a vocabulary list. These are among the terms used by metro schools to attract the attention of parents and their kids. Atlanta’s many private-school options continue to increase, each offering low student-to-teacher ratios, diverse learning environments and “unique” educational practices.
