First Fridays with the ASO

experience when they watch the ASO.

ne of my favorite things to do when I’m not onstage performing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is to attend other shows at venues such as The Masquerade. Seeing a great band onstage fills me with an incredible energy. It’s so powerful, I feel like I could take over the world — especially when my friends experience it with me. That’s the thing about music. Whether I’m watching or playing, it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I want audiences to feel that same electrifying

With our new “First Friday” concert series, you can kickstart your weekend with a blast. Swing over after work with some friends, have a few drinks, see a great show and still be out in time to have the rest of your Friday night ahead of you. If I wasn’t already onstage, I’d definitely go with my friends for happy hour to watch one of the world’s best orchestras while everyone else fights rushhour traffic.

And remember, no tuxedos at these concerts. It’s a much more laid-back atmosphere. Plus, the programming is rad: the best orchestral

music in a short, one-hour concert for just $25 — less than most of us spend on a Friday night in the city. It’s the perfect introduction to the ASO if you’re a newcomer, and it’s a refreshing approach if you’re a regular. When you’re here, you are part of what’s happening onstage — you become part of the experience. The Orchestra feeds off of the energy of the people in the room, so no performance is ever the same. Out with the old… As you return to Atlanta Symphony Hall for a concert this season, some things will be right where you left them — namely your world-class orchestra in topnotch form. Other things might seem a little different to you.

A Symphony Hall Makeover

Story by Sean Ward

T

he first change you probably noticed when you walked into Atlanta Symphony Hall is what has come to be known as the “shell” — the massive wooden structure that encapsulates the stage and nearly reaches the ceiling. The shell “gives the

acoustic property to the hall, reflects the sound back into the audience, and also around the stage so the musicians can better hear each other,” explains Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Senior Production Stage Manager Paul Barrett. The shell was installed late

has corrected all of the Hall’s dead spots and is going to help the audience, and the Orchestra, hear tremendously better.”

A New Addition to the ASO Family Weighing in at almost 1,000 pounds and nearly 9 feet in length, the ASO has added a brand-new Steinway grand piano that will debut this 2013-14 season.

this past summer and has been carefully built to meet the acoustic and visual needs of Atlanta Symphony Hall.

The piano was selected from the Steinway factory in New York City, and hand-picked by pianist Jeremy Denk and a team of ASO staff: President & CEO Stanley E. Romanstein, Ph.D., Vice President for Artistic Planning Evans Mirageas, and Piano Technician Jonathan Edwards. The Steinway Model D is the largest and most sophisticated piano Steinway produces.

“This completely redesigned shell … is going to help the audience, and the Orchestra, hear tremendously better.”

Before being installed, the giant acoustic shell was designed by a dedicated team of sonic professionals who tested every square inch of the hall to locate any acoustic deficiencies, or “dead spots,” where sound was trapped. “The original shell dates back to the 1960s and was deteriorating quickly,” says Barrett. “This redesigned shell encoreatlanta.com | Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 29

New Music ...

JEFF ROFFMAN

If you haven’t had enough “new” to please you yet, don’t worry — the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform four world premieres throughout the course of the season, consistently reaffirming its role as a leader of modern-day music presentation. Two of the four premieres will be performed in October.

“ Sonically and acoustically, it will be a first-class experience for the audience.” — Julianne Fish

“I think it really shows that we are providing a high-quality instrument to match our artists’ ability to perform,” says Julianne Fish, ASO Vice President and General Manager of Orchestra Operations. It has been nearly 14 years since the ASO has added a new concert piano to Symphony Hall, and this will be one of two that guest artists will play and select from before a performance. Fish believes this will be as beneficial for the audience as it will be for the world-famous pianists who will play them. “Sonically and acoustically, it will be a first-class experience for the audience,” sshe says. “It really all comes back to artistic excellence.”

Oct. 3-5, Music Director Robert Spano will lead the Orchestra in the premiere of (incantations for orchestra), by award-winning composer and director Richard Prior. The piece is “a compact symphonic poem that explores a huge range of expression,” describes Prior. “It’s a journey through a vast range of dramatic musical landscapes, going from dark, brooding lyricism to ecstatic affirmations and resolutions.” As a resident of Atlanta for the past 10 years, and a music director at Emory University, Prior is no stranger to the ASO. “It adds an extraordinarily powerful dimension to the creative process when you are writing music for an orchestra that you really know,” Prior says. “This extends to (Story continues on Page 38)

Was Bach a mathematician and numerologist? Musical and graphical symbolism appear in his compositions, and numbers did seem to be an important part of his world, whether for some divine purpose or for his own amusement. As a devout Lutheran, however, it is unlikely Bach publically practiced numerology or other mysticism.

Robert Spano, Music Director Donald Runnicles, Principal Guest Conductor

Why Dueling Pistols?

Brahms and Wagner had been in a public feud over the “new” school of music. Though Wagner was dead at the time of Symphony No. 3’s premiere, his enthusiasts tried to interfere. The conflict between the two factions nearly brought about a duel. That’s passion!

Mr. Watts’ career began at 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in their Young People’s Concerts, broadcast nationwide on CBS television. Two weeks later, Mr. Bernstein asked him to substitute at the last minute for the ailing Glenn Gould in performances with the New York Philharmonic. He is a regular guest at the major summer music festivals including Ravinia, the Hollywood Bowl, Saratoga, Tanglewood and the Mann Music Center, and with orchestras in Philadelphia and Minnesota; the New York and Los Angeles philharmonics; and the St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Seattle and National symphonies. Mr. Watts has appeared on numerous television programs, and his 1976 New York recital, which aired on the “Live From Lincoln Center” program, was the first full-length recital broadcast in the history of television. In June 2006, he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl of Fame to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his debut. He is also the recipient of the 1988 Avery Fisher Prize. Mr. Watts was the youngest person ever to receive an honorary doctorate from Yale University and has received numerous honors from respected music programs like the University of Pennsylvania, Brandeis University, the Juilliard School of Music and his alma mater, the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.

the imagining of the work under the musical shaping and leadership of Maestro Robert Spano.” On Oct. 17 and 19, composer and Juilliard faculty member Philip Lasser will premiere his piano concerto under the direction of guest conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, featuring pianist Simone Dinnerstein as soloist. Lasser’s new work was composed for Dinnerstein to be premiered at Atlanta Symphony Hall. He describes how the sound of the work and the pianist performing it were bothheavily influenced by Bach. “Simone and I both have such a mutual passion for Bach, and that was really a lot of the basis for the composition,” explains Lasser. “The whole piece is germinated from the Bach chorale, and many of the harmonies of Bach that I love

so much find their way into the piece.” As for the title? Well, that is something that Lasser intentionally leaves for the audience to figure out after hearing the piece. “I do not want to guide the audience, which is why I give a title that is descriptive but ambiguous so they can dream for themselves,” says Lasser. “I do, though, hope that my music communicates a deep sense of travel, memory and personal experience. It is the story of a voyage.” The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is all about “new” this season, but with the same amount of tradition and excellence that audiences have come to know, love and call their own. Welcome to the 2013-14 season, and enjoy tonight’s performance by your Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

The Woodruff Circle

The Woodruff Arts Center and our four artistic divisions – the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences – rely on the generosity of those donors whose support extends to all parts of our organization. The members of The Woodruff Circle each contributed more than $250,000 to our efforts last year. We are deeply grateful to these 34 partners who help to ensure that the arts thrive in our city. $1,000,000+

2 40 years! Summer 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of our Delta Classic Chastain concert series at the legendary Chastain Park Amphitheater.

3 Honoring Our Veterans The annual All American Celebration at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park has become a tradition in Atlanta. This year, we were honored to have provided more than 500 free tickets to our military partners at Fort Benning, Dobbins Air Force Base, Atlanta VA Medical Center, United Military Cares, Operation Military Kids Fort Gillem, and the USO. Thank you all for serving our country.

4 Kickstarting the Archives We launched our first Kickstarter campaign in an effort raise $5000 to catalog, research, and digitize video and audio tapes, photos, and print materials from the ASO Archives — a project run by ASO Archivist Bob Scarr. Thank you for helping to exceed our goal - $13,590 was raised!
