ATLANTA BALLET LEADERSHIP GENNADI NEDVIGIN (Artistic Director), in February 2016, was named

Atlanta Ballet’s fourth artistic director in the Company’s then 87year history. Nedvigin, born in Rostov, Russia, began his training at age 5. At 10, he was accepted into the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Upon graduating, he joined Moscow Renaissance Ballet, as a soloist, before he was invited to dance with Le Jeune Ballet de France in Paris. In 1997, while on tour in the U.S., San Francisco Ballet (SFB) Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson offered Nedvigin a soloist contract. After three years, he was promoted to principal dancer. While at SFB, Nedvigin won the International Competition’s Erik Bruhn Prize (1999). He has also received three Isadora Duncan Dance Awards (2001, 2010 and 2017).

Along the way, Nedvigin was fortunate to work with many worldrenowned choreographers. In addition to his dancing career, Nedvigin also taught master classes and staged ballets in the U.S. and abroad before becoming an artistic director. Recently, Nedvigin sat on juried panels at the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, the International Ballet Competition held in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Youth America Grand Prix. Under Nedvigin’s guidance, Atlanta Ballet has established the Academy training program, which includes a top-tier performance ensemble, Atlanta Ballet 2, representing his commitment to training for the next generation of professional dancers.

ARTURO JACOBUS (President & CEO) is in his 11th season with Atlanta Ballet. He was previously chief executive of Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, each for 10 years. He holds master’s degrees in business administration, arts administration and human resources management, and he has completed management certificate programs at the University of Washington and Harvard Business School. Jacobus has served on executive boards for such arts organizations as Dance/ USA, Washington State Arts Alliance, Northwest Development Officers’ Association and California Arts Advocates. He has stayed actively involved in arts strategy and advocacy by chairing and sitting on panels for the city of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Before becoming an arts executive, Jacobus served for 20 years as a bandmaster for the U.S. Navy, leading ensembles in Villefranche, France; Gaeta and Naples, Italy; and San Francisco. While stationed in Naples, under the Commander in Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe (CincSouth), he founded a 50-member NATO ensemble from the armies, navies and air forces of Italy, Greece, Turkey, the U.K. and the U.S. S HARON STORY (Dean of the Centre for Dance Education) joined Atlanta Ballet after a professional dance career that spanned more than 20 years and included tenures with Joffrey Ballet, the School of American Ballet, Stars of New York City Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and 10 years with Boston Ballet. Her Boston Ballet tenure included international tours with Rudolf Nureyev. In 1996, along with her role as ballet mistress, Story became dean of the Centre for Dance Education (Centre), which has grown to become one of the largest dance schools in the nation. The Centre is nationally recognized for its programs and community initiatives. Under Story’s direction, the Centre achieved accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). She serves currently as president of the board of directors for NASD. Story received the 2015 Women Making a Mark Award from Atlanta Magazine and was featured in the ArtsATL Legacy Series 2018.

She is committed to providing a noncompetitive atmosphere and access to dance education that is shaped by the community’s needs, is innovative and inspires the commitment and excellence that are the trademarks of Atlanta Ballet.

RORY HOHENSTEIN (Ballet Master) was born in Washington D.C.,

where he began dancing at the age of 6. Hohenstein furthered his training, from the age of 12, at the Kirov Academy of Ballet. At 17, he joined Le Jeune Ballet de France in Paris. In 2000, he joined San Francisco Ballet as a member of the corps, being promoted to soloist in 2006. In 2008, he moved to New York joining Christopher Wheeldon’s company, Morphoses, performing in its home seasons at New York City Center and at Sadler’s Wells in London. He spent a season dancing with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company before joining the Joffrey Ballet in 2011, where he continued to be a leading artist with the company through the 2018/19 season. Some personal highlights include dancing the roles of Romeo in Krzysztof Pastor’s Romeo & Juliet, Riff in Jerome Robbins’ West Side Story Suite, Levin in Yuri Possokhov’s Anna Karenina and in Wayne McGregor’s Eden/Eden.

Hohenstein is very excited to join Atlanta Ballet this season as ballet master under the direction of Gennadi Nedvigin.

VERONIKA PART (Ballet Master) was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and began her early training in artistic gymnastics before entering the Vaganova Ballet Academy in 1988. Part graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1996 and joined the Mariinksy Ballet. In 1999, Part won the BALTIKA Prize. She joined American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in 2002 and was promoted to principal in May 2009. Her roles with ABT include Odette-Odile in Swan Lake; the Sylph in La Sylphide; the leading role in Les Sylphides and Symphonie Concertante; among others. Part originated the roles of Natalia in On the Dnieper and the Lilac Fairy in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Sleeping Beauty. In 2009, she performed Dying Swan with Yo-Yo Ma for A Celebration of Women in the Arts at the Kennedy Center. In 2012, Part performed Black Swan as part of the tribute to Natalia Makarova at the 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. She has been a master teacher at Greenwich Ballet Academy and has sat on the jury panel at the Youth American Grand Prix (YAGP). This season, Part joined Atlanta Ballet as ballet master.

ROMAN RYKINE (Ballet Master) joined Atlanta Ballet from Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in 2016. He graduated from the Rudolph Nureyev State Ballet Academy in his hometown of Ufa, Russia, and he was a principal dancer with Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, English National Ballet and the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre. Rykine won the gold medal and first prize at the International Ballet Competition in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1993, and the bronze medal at both the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1994, and the Rudolph Nureyev International Ballet Competition in Budapest, Hungary, in 1993. He holds the honorary title of Artist of Merit of the Republic from the Government of Ufa, Russia.

During his career, Rykine toured extensively in Europe, Asia and the United States and was a guest artist with various ballet companies. He retired from the stage in 2010 and began teaching. Rykine was a guest faculty member at the Boston Ballet School before joining the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in January 2012.

ARTISTIC AND PRODUCTION TEAMS LAR LUBOVITCH (Choreographer, Elemental Brubeck) is one of America’s most versatile and widely seen choreographers. He founded the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in 1968. Over 50 years, it has gained an international reputation as one of America’s top dance companies, produced more than 120 dances and performed before millions across the U.S. and over 40 countries. Many other major companies throughout the world have performed the company’s dances, including American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Joffrey Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, and more. Lubovitch has created ice-dancing works for Olympians John Curry, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Brian Orser, JoJo Starbuck and Paul Wylie, and he has created feature-length ice-dance specials for TV: “The Planets” for A&E (nominated for an International Emmy Award, a Cable AceAward and a Grammy Award) and “The Sleeping Beauty” for PBS and Anglia TV, Great Britain. His theater and film work includes Sondheim/Lapine’s Into the Woods (Tony Award nomination), The Red Shoes (Astaire Award), the Tony Award-winning revival of The King and I (on Broadway and in London’s West End), Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame in Berlin, and Robert Altman’s movie “The Company” (American Choreography Award). In 2016, he premiered The Bronze Horseman, based on the Pushkin poem, for the Mikhailovsky Ballet in Russia. In 1987, he conceived Dancing for Life, which took place at Lincoln Center. It was the first response by the dance community to the AIDS crisis, raising over $1 million. Together with Jay Franke, in 2007 Lubovitch created the Chicago Dancing Festival, in collaboration with the City of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art. It presented 10 seasons entirely free to the public. Recent awards: 2007 named Chicagoan of the Year by the Chicago Tribune; 2008 named similarly by Chicago Magazine; 2011 designated a Ford Fellow by United States Artists and received the Dance/ USA Honors Award; 2012 his dance Crisis Variations awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse for outstanding choreography at the Bolshoi Theatre; 2013 honored for lifetime achievement by the American Dance Guild; 2014 awarded an honorary doctorate by The Juilliard School; 2016 received the Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement and the Dance Magazine Award, named one of America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures by the Dance Heritage Coalition and appointed a Distinguished Professor at UC/Irvine. JACK MEHLER (Lighting Designer, Elemental Brubeck), based in New York for 25 years, designs a wide variety of live events. He received the 2013 Korean Musical Theatre Award (Korean Tony) for his lighting of Rebecca and the 2012 award for Elisabeth; 2019 Broadway World Connecticut awards for both scenery and lighting of Evita at ACT of Connecticut; and Independent Reviewers of New England Award (IRNE) nominations for A Christmas Carol, Jekyll & Hyde, Nine and Camelot, all at North Shore Music Theatre. Mehler has designed dozens of Lar Lubovitch dances for Austin Ballet, Ballet Florida, Hubbard Street, José Limón, Joffrey Ballet, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Martha Graham Dance Company, San Francisco Ballet and others. At Atlanta Ballet, he designed scenery and lighting for Yuri Possokhov’s Don Quixote. Other dance projects include Alvin Ailey, Ballet Memphis, BalletMet, Donald Byrd/ Spectrum Dance, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, among many others.

Theatre designs include Cleveland Play House, Manhattan Theatre Club, North Shore Music Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Riverside Theatre, Seattle Rep, Syracuse Stage, Walnut Street Playhouse, The Working Theatre and the WPA Theatre, among many others. Mehler is a founding board member of ACT of Connecticut and provides owners’ representation for organizations building and renovating performance and rehearsal venues.

DAVE BRUBECK (Composer, Elemental Brubeck), born December 6 1920 in California, is a jazz legend who is equally distinguished as composer and pianist. His studies at the College of the Pacific and with Darius Milhaud at Mills College led to the founding, with fellow students, of the experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble, which recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. Later, in 1958, the combination of Brubeck with drummer Joe Morello, double bassist Eugene Wright and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond quickly achieved an overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Quartet’s experimentation with time signatures unusual to jazz produced works like “Blue Rondo a la Turk” and “Take Five,” introducing millions of enthusiastic young listeners to unexplored regions of jazz. The group recorded and performed together continuously through 1967. Brubeck composed and, in some cases, recorded several large-scale works including two ballets, a musical, an oratorio, four cantatas, a Mass, works for jazz combo and orchestra, and many solo piano pieces. In recent decades, he organized several new quartets and continued to appear at the Newport, Monterey, Concord, and Kool Jazz Festivals. Brubeck performed at the White House in 1964 and 1981, and at

the 1988 Moscow Summit honoring the Gorbachevs. His awards included several honorary degrees, the BMI Jazz Pioneer Award, the 1988 American Eagle Award presented by the National Music Council, and a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys. In 2009, he was a Kennedy Center Honors recipient.

ALEXANDER EKMAN (Choreographer and Scenic and Video Designer, Tuplet) is an international choreographer and director creating pieces for opera houses, theatres and museums. He also directs films and music videos, as well as live performances in pop-up locations. Ekman is known for his fast-paced timing, witty humor and clever transitions. He aims to create work with which the majority can relate and connect. Since 2006, he has devoted his time to creating pieces that both entertain and question the observer. He aims to transform the atmosphere in the audience and to always surprise and entertain the audience. Around 50 dance companies worldwide have performed pieces by Ekman, such as Royal Swedish Ballet, Cullberg Ballet, Compania Nacional de Danza, Goteborg Ballet, Iceland Dance Company, Bern Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Dance, Ballet de l’Opera du Rhin, The Norwegian National Ballet, Boston Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Sydney Dance Company, The Royal Ballet of Denmark and Vienna Ballet. He has also created for festivals such as the French Europa Danse and the Athens International Dance Festival. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Ana Maria graduated from the National Ballet School of Canada and joined Canada’s National Ballet immediately after. She went on to dance with the Royal Danish Ballet (Denmark), Augsburg Ballet (Germany), The Portuguese Contemporary Dance Company (Lisbon), and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet (New York), where she danced for seven years. Ana Maria has performed and created works with contemporary dance’s foremost choreographers, including Ohad Naharin, Crystal Pite, Hofesh Shechter, Jiří Kylián, Jo Stromgren, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and many others. As a freelance performer she has collaborated with New Dialect, Zoe/Juniper, Bryan Arias and Aszure Barton & Artists. She assisted Crystal Pite on her Polaris project at New York City Center, and regularly assists Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman with new creations and stages his work around the world. Ana Maria’s own choreographic work has been presented by the Norwegian National Ballet, New Dialect and SUNY Purchase Dance Company. She created a full-evening duet with Nathan Griswold that has toured the US and Europe. She will create a new full evening on Terminus Modern Ballet Theater in Atlanta for their 2020 season, and is currently working on a new project with actor and NYU faculty member Zachary Fine. Holder of a BFA in dance from Empire State College in New York, Ana Maria teaches ballet, contemporary and improvisation workshops at professional programs and dance companies across the U.S., Europe and Asia.

NANCY HAEYUNG BAE (Costume Designer, Tuplet), born and raised in New York and educated at Parsons School of Design, has designed for most of her life. She was co-founder of the brand aulle. and has held design positions at JCrew, Gap, Isabel Toledo and Theory, among others. She has always been passionate about dance since a young age and believes that costuming requires a fundamental obligation to radical, expressive movement. This technical commitment provides structure to her process. With 20 years of experience in all aspects of design and construction, from concept to production, Bae works in both mass market retail and dance, simultaneously. MICHAEL KORSCH (Scenic and Lighting Designer, Sunrise Divine) is a lighting, projection and scenic designer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has worked with numerous directors and choreographers, creating hundreds of visual designs for dance, theatre and other live performances throughout North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Korsch has been the resident lighting designer for Complexions Contemporary Ballet since 1998, Ballet Arizona since 2001, and the Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center since its inception at the University of Southern California. He has also been the lighting/technical director for the Laguna Dance Festival since it began in 2005. KEVIN JOHNSON (Music Director, Sunrise Divine), associate professor of music at Spelman College, is a renowned musician, composer and active clinician. He has traveled throughout the United States and Europe providing choral workshops, master classes, seminars and retreats for music educators and churches. He is currently the minister of music at The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville, Georgia. His works have resulted in performances for church and school choruses, all-state choral festivals, Catholic archdioceses nationwide, as well as international performances with The Spelman College Glee Club. In March 2016, Dr. Johnson led The Glee Club in performance for President Barack Obama at the White House and completed a 2019 performance with a glee club in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Johnson is an active composer, frequently writing for Catholic worship. He provides an extensive catalog, including seven Mass settings, over 300 psalm settings and many sacred songs. In 2013, he completed his second compact disc recording for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Atlanta titled, “Reap a Harvest in Due Season: A Treasury of African American Catholic Music.” This work includes his nine compositions and other favorite songs of the church. Under his direction, The Spelman College Glee Club has recorded six compact disc recordings and over twenty recording of the Christmas Carol Concert, which celebrated its 92nd year in December 2018. As a professional composer, Dr. Johnson has been commissioned to compose several works, including “A Choice to Change the World” and “We Are Christmas” (commissioned by Spelman College), “The Mass of Faith” (commissioned

by Father John Adamski), “The Preacher’s Mass” (commissioned by the Dominican Friars), “The Mass of St. Benedict the African” (commissioned by the Archdiocese of Chicago) and “The Mass of St. Peter Claver” (commissioned by the Knights of Peter Claver). “The Mass of St. Peter Claver” premiered at an anniversary Mass where the Archbishop of Atlanta, Wilton D. Gregory, celebrated his performance. Dr. Johnson has been published under the Colla Voce, GIA Publications and Treble Clef Press. He continues to publish most of his music through his very own publishing company, Lion and Lamb Publishing. His publications include “We Are Christmas,” “Steal Away,” “Glory to God,” “Psalms for The Church Year” (Volumes I, II and III), and many more.

THE GOLDEN GATE SINGERS (Guests Artists, Sunrise Divine) is an American vocal group founded in 2016 by Dr. Kevin P. Johnson. The repertoire consists of sacred and secular choral literature for soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices, with a particular focus on traditional spirituals, music by African-American composers, music from many cultures and commissioned works. The formation of The Golden Gate Singers was inspired by the 1930’s group, Golden Gate Quartet, a group in which Dr. Johnson’s father, Willie T. Johnson, was a founding member. The Golden Gate Quartet has been named the most successful African-American jubilee quartet. The group performs nationally and internationally, and has maintained a reputation for artistic excellence.

THE SPELMAN COLLEGE GLEE CLUB (Guests Artists, Sunrise Divine) has maintained a reputation for choral excellence since 1925. The organization is open by audition to all students of the college community. Their repertoire consists of sacred and secular choral literature for women’s voices, with a particular focus on traditional spirituals, music by African American composers, music from many cultures and commissioned works. The Spelman College Glee Club has traveled throughout the United States and performed for a variety of audiences.

Past performances include concert halls such as Faneuil Hall in Boston, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and churches, high schools, colleges and universities nationwide. The group’s international travels took them to Brazil and Canada. The organization’s highlight was a March 2016 performance at the White House for President Barack Obama.

The Spelman College Glee Club is the premier performance organization for the college and sings for most campus events. It has had the unique opportunity to perform with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, world renowned singer Jessye Norman, and historically in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. The Spelman College Glee Club recently celebrated the ninetieth year of their Annual Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert. This event takes place in concert with the Morehouse College Glee Club. This concert is featured annually on “Performance Today” on National Public Radio and Georgia Public Broadcasting during the holiday season. Other major performances include the Annual Spring Tour during the college’s observation of spring break and an Annual Spring Concert at Spelman College. Past directors include the late Kemper Harreld, Willis Laurence James, Dr. Roland Allison and Dr. Norma Raybon. Over the years The Spelman College Glee Club has grown to a membership of 80 phenomenal students. The glee club is currently under the direction of Dr. Kevin Johnson, professor of the Spelman College Music Department.

SYNOPSIS

ACT ONE

Long ago, in a far off land by a beautiful lake, there lived an evil magician named Count Von Rothbart. He put a spell on the young princesses who wandered by the lake, turning them into swans.

Also living by the lake, there was a young prince named Siegfried. It is his 21st birthday. As his friends celebrate, his mother, the Queen, arrives with six princesses.

The Queen suggests he pick one of the princesses to marry. Soon he finds himself attracted to the princess, Odette. As the party ends, all depart except Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette who share a moment before Prince Siegfried is summoned to go hunting with his court men.

Now, alone by the lake, Princess Odette reflects upon her meeting with Prince Siegfried. Her presence observed by the evil Count Von Rothbart who captures her and turns her into a swan.

Not long after, Prince Siegfried returns with his hunting party. When he takes aim, Princess Odette, in swan form, arrives and pleads with him not to shoot. Enchanted, Prince Siegfried is captivated by the Swan Princess.

Next, the evil Count Von Rothbart appears and makes clear the rules of the curse.

“Only true love in the face of death can break the spell,” he declared.

ACT TWO

It is the evening of Prince Siegfried’s 21st birthday, and time for him to select which princess he will marry.

Trumpets announce the arrival of Count Von Rothbart, whose plan is to deceive Prince Siegfried. Count Von Rothbart will present Princess Odette’s evil twin sister, Odile, as Princess Odette, and trick him into believing she is his true love. Prince Siegfried pledges his love for her. Immediately, but still too late, Princess Odette flies into the scene revealing Odile’s true identity and confirming Prince Siegfried has been deceived. Count Von Rothbart captures Princess Odette and flees the scene leaving Prince Siegfried devastated.

Princess Odette, heartbroken at Prince Siegfried’s apparent desertion, rushes to the lake. Prince Siegfried pursues her and pleads for her forgiveness.

Next, all of Prince Siegfried’s court men arrive and unite with the swans to battle against Count Von Rothbart. At the end of the battle as Count Von Rothbart weakens, Prince Siegfried recites Von Rothbart’s curse back to him, “only a true love in the face of death can break the spell.”

As Count Von Rothbart dies, Prince Siegfried pledges his love to Princess Odette and the curse is broken allowing Princess Odette and the swans to transform back into their human forms, to unite with their princes.

BRUCE WELLS (Choreographer) is an internationally acclaimed choreographer who began his career with George Balanchine’s New York City Ballet. Following this, he was the resident choreographer for Connecticut Ballet, Boston Ballet and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. In addition, Mr. Wells’ ballets appear in the repertories of The Australian Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, Atlanta Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Ballet Idaho, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Chicago, Milwaukee Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Nevada Dance Theater and Kansas City Ballet. Mr. Wells has taught for the schools of Boston Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theater, City Ballet School of San Francisco, the Vancouver Ballet Society in British Columbia, Jacob’s Pillow, Kansas City Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet.

JOSEPH R. WALLS (Lighting Designer) most recently designed the lighting for Ballet West productions of Snow White and Giselle. This past year, he designed Trey McIntyre’s Teeming Waltzes, Ethan Stiefel’s Wood Work, John Heginbotham’s Racecar, Jessica Lang’s Reverence, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Delusional Beauty and Dana Genshaft’s Shadow Lands for the Washington Ballet and their performances at Fall for Dance in New York City. Internationally, Walls works often with STEPS of Panama and recently designed Marlyn Attie’s Crush at the National Theatre of Panama with support from the United States Embassy. He has also been nominated for the prestigious Premios Escena award for best lighting in Panama City, Panama. In 2019, Walls designed the weeklong celebration with Pope Francis The World Youth Day. With Atlanta Ballet, Walls has designed several world premieres over the past five years. Additionally, he has collaborated with staibdance, Inland Pacific Ballet, Chautauqua Dance, Ballet Spartanburg, Charlotte Ballet, Roswell Dance Theatre, Komasnsé Dance Theater, Complexions, as well as on Sundance Mountain Resort Summer Theatre productions. www.jwallsdesign.com AMELIA FISCHER (Narrator) is a professional actor, director and fight choreographer based in Atlanta, Georgia. She has worked for theatres in Washington, D.C. to Washington state, including seasons with Tennessee Shakespeare Company, Georgia Shakespeare, Virginia Shakespeare Festival, Classical Theatre Company, Shakespeare Walla Walla and Houston Shakespeare Company. Here in Atlanta, Fischer has performed with Theatrical Outfit, Alliance Theatre, Horizon Theatre, Theatre Buford, Essential Theatre and Theatre Emory. As a voiceover artist, she has voiced several anime characters for Sentai Filmworks, including Jibril in “No Game No Life.” Fischer is proud to have earned her M.F.A. from the University of Houston’s Professional Actor Training Program and her B.A. from Coastal Carolina University, and to have trained with the Gainesville Theatre Alliance.

Latecomers may watch the beginning of a show on flat-screen TVs in our lobby until the theater has reopened to allow guests into the auditorium. In addition, touring companies set the policy for allowing those who arrive past curtain time into the theater. We ask late patrons to wait until the approved time and we reopen the theater doors. Please plan ahead to arrive early and relax before the performance begins.
