2019 Shuler Musical Theater Awards
Shuler Hensley
Shuler Hensley, Marietta native and multi-award winning Broadway, Off-Broadway, film and TV star, has been an integral part of the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards — Shuler Hensley Awards since the program’s inception eleven years ago. Teacher, fellow performer and inspiration, he has given his time, energy and talent to support and further the arts in education. Mr. Hensley’s list of roles and awards is long and illustrious. He is currently on Broadway playing Tom Kettle in Jez Butterworth’s new play The Ferryman, directed by Sam Mendes. He has played the Monster in Young Frankenstein (Broadway, US Tour and West End), Javert in Les Misérables and Jud Fry in Oklahoma!, a powerful and moving performance which earned him the “Triple Crown”: Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. His roles Off-Broadway include Fiorello!; The Whale, for which he was awarded “Stage Performance of the Year” by New York magazine; Silence! The Musical; Sweet and Sad; and The Great American Trailer Park Musical. He starred in Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, All About Us, and The Phantom of the Opera. His work extends to television and film, and he has performed in opera and with symphony orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Detroit Symphony and the New World Symphony. Among his TV credits are “Elementary,” “The Americans,” “Deadline,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “The Jury.” His film appearances include “The Legend of Zorro,” “Van Helsing,” “The Bread, My Sweet (aka A Wedding for Bella),” “Odd Thomas,” “Cruiser,” and the upcoming “Into the Wilderness.” A recent film project had him playing President James Garfield in PBS’s “Murder of a President” on Georgia Public Broadcasting, as well as recurring characters on Netflix series “OA,” NBC’s “Shades of Blue,” and Cartoon Network’s “Neon Joe Werewolf Hunter.” Shuler recently performed On The Town with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas. He also recently performed as Leon Czolgosz in Assassins at New York City’s Center and as the villanous protester in The Greatest Showman, as well as the lead in The Whale at London’s Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio. He is currently the Associate Artistic Director at City Springs Theatre Company, and on the founding advisory board for the new Musical Theatre Program at The Manhattan School of Music. shulerhensley.com

•T his policy applies to The Atlanta Opera and Atlanta Ballet only: We know that patrons make every effort to be on time for events out of respect for the performers and other theatergoers. However, there are times when traffic or weather problems cause late arrivals. Latecomers may watch the beginning of a show on flat-screen TVs in our lobby until the theater has reopened to allow guests into the auditorium. In addition, touring companies set the policy for allowing those who arrive past curtain time into the theater. We ask late patrons to wait until the approved time and we reopen the theater doors. Please plan ahead to arrive early and relax before the performance begins.

For the past 25 years, the Georgia Lottery and you have been helping our students reach their true potential. That gets an “A” in Caleb’s book.
