ou don’t have to be a weirdo, a misfit, or a nobody
to fall in love with the story of three demigod teens who battle Olympic-sized enemies on a journey of redemption and self-discovery. But it certainly helps, says Jorrel Javier, who plays the half-satyr/half-human Grover in The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, coming to Cobb Energy Centre in June. You don’t have to be a teen either, even though the musical is based on Rick Riordan’s young adult series that begins with the novel The Lightning Thief. Even adults can relate to the trials, tribulations, and triumphs that Percy (Chris McCarrell), the “half-blood” hero and son of Poseidon, Clarice (Sara Beth Pfeifer), and Grover experience. This trio remains universally relatable whether they’re being besieged by angry gods, teachers who morph into harpies, or a Minotaur who’s one big scary dude. “One reason why we believe The Lightning Thief is so special is because, underneath it all, the story deals with experiences every adult has gone through in their life,” Javier says. “It’s the journey of having to live up to the expectations the world or your parents or society has of you and realizing the things that make you unique also make you special and powerful. “We say, ‘Yeah, we’re weird, but that’s why we’re great.’” Seeing as the story is built around the characters of Greek mythology, it’s no surprise that the journey includes plenty of action, directed by Ron Kinter (Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy, The Anthem),
including epic hand-to-hand combat in fight sequences and skirmishes with bigger-thanlife-size puppets like the Minotaur. But Javier says that a surprise or two turns the typical fight scenario on its head. “As you watch the fights, you see that the people who are kicking butt are the women,” he says. “Clarice is the main fighter and the most heated warrior because she’s the child of the god of war. The women are the top warriors here. It’s a real shift in dynamics.” Where is Grover during all the commotion? “Oh, Grover cowers a lot,” Javier says, laughing. “He’s a lover, not a fighter. He’s a child of Pan, so he doesn’t like fights.” The Lightning Thief’s national tour began in Chicago in January after closing an extended Off-Broadway run. Two of its creators – director Stephen Brackett and book writer Joe Tracz – also collaborated on Be More Chill, now running on Broadway at the Lyceum Theater. BroadwayWorld.com calls The Lightning Thief “the little musical that could.” “With limited budget and some truly creative and imaginative stagecraft, [The Lightning Thief] manages to succeed where a big budget Hollywood film failed: it remains true to the plot, character and tone of its original source material and delivers a thoroughly entertaining and epic tale that will easily charm even those unfamiliar with the original source material,” said the BroadwayWorld.com review. The Lightning Thief features lyrics by Rob Rokicki and puppetry designed by Acheson Walsh Studios (Candide at the Alliance Theatre, War Horse and On the Town on Broadway). And in The Lightning Thief, the puppets are almost as plentiful as the fight sequences and just as important to the story.

“In the first half of the show, I’m on as myself as a satyr, so I wear a puppet,” Javier says. “I look like a goat from the waist down. In the second half, I have to go incognito. I’m out in the real world, so I have to put on pants.” “Other puppets are manipulated by the actors, like the Minotaur, which is twice the actor’s size, strapped on and fitted with rods for movement. You know it’s a puppet, but it’s still pretty scary-looking.”
Javier has a secondary role in the show, too, as Mr. D (Dionysus), the curmudgeonly god of wine who angered Zeus and was sentenced to running Camp Half-Blood for kids like Percy, Clarice, Grover, and all the offspring of humans and gods. “He’s fun to play because he’s miserable all the time,” Javier says. Wait a minute. Halfhuman kids? A trio of teens, all misfits, who go on quests, battle supernatural beings,

and learn how to corral their legendary powers? It’s starting to sound a little familiar, but Javier says the comparisons with Harry Potter and his gang go only so far. “I was a fan of both series, and there are parallels with the group of friends, but we’re dealing with two completely worlds,” he says. While all the flash, fun, and fighting make for a spectacular event, they don’t overwhelm
the overarching story of discovery, friendships, and challenges overcome, Javier says. “I was a massive fan of the [series],” he says. “It was how I got through middle school. I never felt like I was in the ‘in’ crowd, and while I was never bullied or had any severe trauma, I felt I found my place in these books. I get it! I’m one of these guys, so I’m hoping this musical will inspire people the same way, and let them know it’s OK to be weird.”

a traviata is a cornerstone of the operatic repertory. The classic story has been told time and time again, but few with the same intensity as Verdi – a young female courtesan and a young man fall in love, compromising the safety of the courtesan. The three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi is set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. The show is based on the classic novel La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, son of another famous author of the same name who penned The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.
Dumas’ novel has been adapted not only to opera with La traviata, but also to ballet, contemporary dance, numerous films, and a stage play adapted by Dumas himself. La traviata is the only one of Verdi’s many operas to be set entirely indoors. Originally named for its main character, the music of Violetta changes as she evolves through the drama: from the hectic, almost hysterical melodies of the first act, to the more dramatic passages of the second, and the spiritual quality of her music as she departs life in Act III, when hardly a dry eye remains.

losing out the 18|19 season, Atlanta Ballet presents three imaginative works by rising star choreographers: Kiyon Ross, Gemma Bond, and Liam Scarlett. Sum Stravinsky by Kiyon Ross receives its Atlanta premiere with Director’s Choice. Ross is a resident choreographer at Ballet Arkansas and a retired soloist with Pacific Northwest Ballet soloist. Originally from Baltimore, Ross trained at Baltimore School of the Arts, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, the School of American Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Secondly, Gemma Bond’s Denouement returns. This original work, brought to life by piano and cello accompaniment, explores the passage of time and how
pivotal choices can determine a path for us that we never imagined. Bond was born in Bedfordshire, England, and trained at the Royal Ballet School. Recently, she served as an Artistic Partnership Initiative Fellow at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University. Lastly, Atlanta Ballet presents the world premiere of Catch by Liam Scarlett. One of the biggest stars of ballet today, Scarlett has also choreographed new works for Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, the BalletBoyz, English National Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Royal New Zealand Ballet, and The Royal Ballet School. Catch is set to Violin Concerto No 1 by Philip Glass.

ruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical takes audiences into the world of Manhattan’s most dangerous (teenage) liaisons. Based on the classic French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and the hit teen dramatic film “Cruel Intentions,” this new musical is full of ‘90s nostalgia and knockout performances. Thanks to explosive choreography and dynamic concert lighting, the musical’s performances are reminiscent of arena tours and VMA-style acts. The show features favorite throwback hits of the ’90s by artists like Boyz II Men, Christina Aguilera, REM, *NSYNC, and Britney Spears.
The musical’s main characters, Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, are diabolically charming stepsiblings. Seduced by revenge and fueled by passion, the two place a bet on whether or not Sebastian can deflower their school’s incoming headmaster’s daughter, Annette Hargrove. As Valmont and Merteuil plot the destruction of the innocent girl – and anyone who gets in their way – they manage to entangle themselves in their own secrets, temptation, and perhaps cruelest of all: love. en Platt is regarded as one of today’s most extraordinary talents. The Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Awardwinner is a truly multi-faceted actor, singer, and all-around performer. After performing in Broadway productions of The Music Man and The Book of Mormon, Platt truly secured his place in Broadway history by originating the title character in Dear Evan Hansen. It was for this role that Platt became the youngest actor to win the Tony for best leading actor in a musical. In May 2017, Platt also became the youngest winner of the Drama League Awards’ Distinguished Performance
Award. This accolade, which recognizes a remarkable performance on the New York stage in the previous year, can only be won once in a performer’s career. Platt was honored with the award at age 23. Earlier this year, Platt released his debut solo album “Sing to Me Instead.” The album features songs co-written by Platt that, according to the Los Angeles Times, “showcase [Platt’s] signature vibrato and guttural vulnerability.” Platt’s North American headline tour is scheduled to stop throughout the United States and Canada, and will feature artists Wrabel and Ben Abraham.

A
manda Palmer visits Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre just after the highly-anticipated release of her new album, There Will Be No Intermission. Palmer describes the album, her third solo LP, as her most personal collection to date. There Will Be No Intermission includes powerful songs that face head-on issues of death, grief, and how to make sense of life itself. “Most of these songs were exercises in survival,” says Palmer. “This isn’t really the record that I was planning to make. But loss and death kept happening in real-time, and these songs became my therapeutic arsenal
of tools for making sense of it all.” While the themes of There Will Be No Intermission may be dark, the mood of the lyrical album is predominantly triumphant, as if to claim victory over even the most dreadful of life’s circumstances. The creation of There Will Be No Intermission was completely crowdsourced by 12,000 patrons using Palmer’s community hub at patreon.com. This same community contributed to the writing of “The Ride” — patrons submitted personal comments about fear and grief that Palmer then pieced into a passionate auditory snapshot of her community.

he Righteous Brothers — the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield — topped the charts for four decades with hits like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.” After Hatfield passed away in 2003, Medley continued performing, keeping The Righteous Brothers’ spirit alive at the encouragement of fans and friends. Always actively putting his creative talents to work, Medley has sung on the soundtracks or performed the theme songs for 33 movies and TV shows and, in 2014, he released his memoir, The Time of My Life. SOMETHING FOR THE LADIES Keyshia Cole is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, business woman, and television personality born in Oakland, Calif. In 2005, she released her debut album, The Way It Is, which spawned five singles: “Never,” “I Changed My Mind,” “(I Just Want It) To Be Over,” “I Should Have Cheated,” and “Love.” The album stayed on the charts for over a year, selling more than 1.6 million copies. In 2006, the 6-episode docu-series “Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is,” debuted on BET.
