Memories are tiny visits to places in our lives. In the past, Scrooge not only visits, he actually sees the living memory of himself. In the present, he is a “captured audience member” visiting memories in the making. In the future, the spirit takes him to places that are not part of his past or present – memorable images of what might be. If my memory serves, this is the 23rd year that the Alliance has shared the story of A Christmas Carol. Revisiting this production year after year is like stepping into a memory. Some moments appear crystal clear – just as expected – just as remembered. Others take on unexpected nuance: An actor makes a new decision about a character’s moment of transition, a new costume piece suddenly brings a touch of elegance to an actor’s stride, a wide-eyed child actor experiences his first taste of artificial snow. The journey is never the same. For the past 23 years the family that is the cast of A Christmas Carol has joined with the family that is our audience to create experiences only live theatre can provide – moments of laughter, tender moments of sadness, and new and beautiful shared memories. God bless us, everyone! Rosemary

Christmas Carol as Victoriana by celise kalke and Natasha Smith
P
resenting a Christmas classic every year means a chance to look through the play at the world in which we live. In this election year, leadership and personality have been part of the national dialogue. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843, seven years after Queen Victoria ascended the throne. The two very public figures lived parallel lives in many ways, and Victoria and Dickens each became symbols of the Victorian era. Queen Victoria was born seven years after Charles Dickens, and became queen at the age of 18 in 1837. Her reign was so long that popular images of her linger more as a mother and grandmother, but upon her crowning her youth and beauty became symbols of the time. Indeed much of contemporary princess and wedding culture have their roots in Victoria’s wedding to Prince Albert in 1840. Both Victoria and Dickens had large families — the Queen had nine children and Dickens ten. Not only the
14

quantity of offspring but the quality of family life defined their public images. Victoria had been raised as an oly child in seclusion by her mother after her quite elderly father passed away, and was the darling and heir of her uncle, the King, who was also several generations older than she was. Victoria replaced this absence with a rich and public family life. Her marriage was a very public love affair. When she first met Albert she wrote, “[Albert] is extremely handsome; his hair is about the same colour as mine; his eyes are large and blue, and he has a beautiful nose and a very sweet mouth with fine teeth; but the charm of his countenance is his expression, which is most delightful.” She was very close to her children, indeed maintaining a voluminous correspondence with her daughters, which has become a treasure trove for researchers and scholars. Dickens’s childhood was defined by difficult parental relationships, especially from the period in which his
father was imprisoned for debt. His mother sent her teenage son to work in a shoe-black factory (and wanted to keep him there even after his father was released). Dickens’s populist style sprang from both artistry and responsibility — with a large family to support his work had to sell. Not only did Victoria preside over the England about which Dickens wrote, she later attended many of his theatrical productions, and invited him to Buckingham Palace three months before his death in 1870. “He had a large, loving mind and the strongest sympathy with the poorer classes,” she later said of the well-loved author. The Christmas celebrations that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert popularized included many German traditions, including the Christmas tree. Their family also enjoyed ice skating, sleigh rides, singing carols, and sending holiday cards. Dickens’s A Christmas Carol also embraced the secular side of the yuletide — a warm spirit of joy and sharing that arose from a strong sense of community, with less dependence on the religious traditions previously associated with the season. Together, Dickens and Victoria created a family ideal deeply embedded in the ideas and impact of A Christmas Carol. For both author and monarch realized, as Bob Cratchit did, that a family life based on ideals brings with it uncountable riches.

Tales from Christmas Carols’ past by Kathy Janich
You know all about the “bah, humbugs” and “God bless us, everyones.” The carols, the visitations and Scrooge’s change of heart. You might not know that A Christmas Carol has its own backstage subculture, with secret handshakes, Secret Santas, goofiness and goodwill for all. This cast of 23 (16 are returnees) will have done some 40 performances by time the run ends, all with only two weeks rehearsal. Crazy time? Indeed. To see how this craziness plays out, we polled actors Chris Kayser (Scrooge, 20 seasons), Bart Hansard (Christmas Present and Fezziwig, nine seasons) and Je Nie Fleming (Mrs. Dilber, Mrs. Fezziwig, seven seasons) for the inside story.
Kayser: “We all love Bart Hansard’s backstage character called ‘Mr. Cheer.’ Two or three times during the run, Mr. Cheer will appear wearing a top hat, a bow tie, no shirt, tights and black show shoes. Everybody goes crazy as he sails through the men’s and women’s chorus dressing rooms” speaking in verse with a proper British accent. Then there’s Mrs. Cheer, a recent arrival and “rare bird,” who seems to favor one Chris Kayser.
Hansard:“We’re the Southeastern cell for Purell sales. We have a whole series of home remedies — teas, Emergen-C, just about any kind of over-the-counter non-drowsy pharmaceutical is in evidence. Failing any kind of fluid erupting from your body, you’re onstage.”
Kayser:“Elizabeth Berkes came out as Belle one time to play her big breakup scene with Young Scrooge with a wire hanger hooked to the back of her costume. It flopped around the whole scene. Megan McFarland, as Ghost of Christmas Present, and I had to watch without cracking a smile. That was some of the best acting I’ve ever done.”
Hansard: “I am a pretty ridiculous Secret Santa.” He’s especially proud of the year he drew the name of Elizabeth Wells Berkes, a Christmas and Star Wars super fan. He decorated her dressing room with a 6-foot-tall white Christmas tree flocked with tiny Darth Vader heads.
18

Hansard:“We’re committed to telling the story. It’s kind of a combat unit. It’s said that soldiers fight for each other, not for the cause. We are kind of like that, too.”
Fleming: “In the poorhouse after the Fezziwigs have lost their wealth, he tells her, ‘Just be grateful for what you have.’ Then the poor people share their food. It somehow sums up for me what Christmas is really about.”

profiles Synopsis Ebenezer Scrooge, a stone-hearted Victorian accountant and penny-pinching money lender, learns the true meaning of Christmas after he is visited on Christmas Eve by four fantastic spirits: the ghost of his former partner in the counting house, Jacob Marley; the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The specters reveal to Scrooge the seeds of loneliness planted in his youth, opportunities for happiness still within his reach, and the dire future that awaits him if he continues in his mean and miserly ways.

Members of our community respond to the work on the Alliance Stage “COLD-BLOODED AS A FISH, HE IS!” The line boomed over the monitor, and all of us “Christmas Carol Kids” dropped everything – playing cards, mugs of hot chocolate, Game Boys, and Secret Santa presents. We hoisted up petticoats, threw on scarves, and scampered upstairs, ready to enter stage left. We were small, but after our experience in A Christmas Carol, we were already discovering how to be pros. We learned how to act by watching Atlanta’s finest performers take the stage. We learned that ensemble is just another word for family. And we learned how much fun a life in the theatre could be.” — Margaret Ivey is a professional actress, and was a “Christmas Carol Kid” from 1997 to 1998.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as Atlanta has become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of early-career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multigenerational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade; Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre Volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at shana.orr@ woodruffcenter.org or call 404.733.4761.
