hen 27-year-old, Texasborn Alvin Ailey launched his eponymous dance troupe in 1958, he did so in a different America. A first-class postage stamp cost 4 cents. The very first Pizza Hut opened in Kansas on $600. And less than half of all U.S. households had a TV set. Much has changed since then, but the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has kept Ailey’s founding principles powerfully intact: modern dance that draws from other artistic mediums; strong, acrobatic performers; and a vivid illustration of diversity through movement. In its entire history, the company has had just three artistic leaders: Ailey (1958-1989), Judith

Jamison (1989-2011) and Robert Battle, who took over in July 2011. Battle, 40, a former artist-in-residence and company choreographer, is committed to Ailey’s past and its future. “The company is a testament to the transcendent power of artistic expression,” he says. “I’m thrilled to further expand Ailey’s diverse repertory with new choreographic treasures that showcase the breadth of the dancers’ artistry while paying tribute to Ailey’s rich history.” A rich history, indeed. But exactly how did this particular dance theater — one that has performed more than 200 works from 80-plus choreographers Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 11

to include African-American culture in modern dance. Unable to find an outlet, he formed his own company.

It started with a simple desire and a lot of early energy.

Its repertory that first year featured seven works, four choreographed by Ailey, including Blues Suite, an his ode to the music of his Southern childhood. Still small, company members toured together in a single station wagon.

Segregation was legally banned in New York when Ailey moved there in 1954 to perform on Broadway in Truman Capote’s House of Flowers, but it was still enforced, partially or wholly, in more than 20 other states. He found the city a fertile place for a young artist, studying dance with such innovators as Martha Graham and acting with Stella Adler. But he felt unfulfilled in his growing ambition 12 EncoreAtlantA.com EncoreAtlantA.com

By 1960 nine new pieces had joined the repertoire, including the groundbreaking Revelations, perhaps the most widely seen modern dance in history. To date, Ailey dancers have performed it in 71 countries, and it

has been seen by tens of millions live and on television. As the decade progressed, so did the company, no longer crowding into one station wagon but performing in countries around the world. The 1970s were filled with innovative choreography and collaborations. The company received numerous awards, appeared at White House galas, performed at Studio 54 and toured the Soviet Union, a first for modern dance since Isadora Duncan’s famed days as a Russian sympathizer. The 1980s brought more honors, including a U.N. Peace Medal for Ailey.

1990s, for example, drew a crowd of 30,000. Today Ailey dancers are as popular as ever, welcomed in cities around the world as they do works new and old. This year, in addition to the its New York season, the company visits Miami and Chicago as well as Germany and France.

Ailey died in 1989 at age 58. Jamison became artistic director at his bequest, guiding the company that Dance Magazine dubbed “recession proof,” due to its enduring popularity: A single live performance in Central Park in the

The musical features all the hit songs from the movie, the Academy Award-winning title song (“Flashdance — What a Feeling”) along with “Maniac,” “Gloria,” “Manhunt” and “I Love Rock & Roll”). Sixteen new songs have been written by Robbie Roth and Robert Cary to fill out the score. Broadway’s Matthew Hydzik (West Side Story, Grease), who plays Nick, Alex’s boss and love interest, says she’s the heart of the story, “a walking paradox. She comes to Pittsburgh to follow her dreams. She is a lover of art, ballet and fashion.” Alex’s plans get complicated when Nick begins to court her. If this sounds like a classic boy-chases-girl love story, don’t be fooled. The love story, says Hydzik, is essential but not the central focus. “Nick is a vehicle to tell Alex’s story. She has a dream and a passion.”

By Kenny Norton What makes a musical successful? Sensational theatrics and mesmerizing choreography? Or the story and the music? How do you balance them to make the show work? Each time out, producers, writers and composers toil to get it right. Few get the chance for a do-over. One exception: The team behind Flashdance the Musical, back at work after a lukewarm reception to the first version of the show in London in 2010. Flashdance the Musical is, of course, based on the 1983 movie, a pop-culture phenomenon in its day. It’s the fairy-tale story of a lady steelworker who dreams of being a legitimate dancer while moonlighting as an exotic dancer. This tour began Jan. 1 in Pittsburgh, where the show is set, and will visit 20-plus cities before it’s done. A separate Broadway company is expected to begin performances in August.

It has a really good lesson to hold about not limiting yourself, he says. Both Alex and the audience learn to not “give up on your dreams or you will die inside.” Hydzik sees the show’s visuals as stunning. “It is of the age of the music video, and the musical has the video concept.” The new staging and choreography come from director-choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Next to Normal, Memphis). For him, Flashdance was an opportunity to let loose creatively, to work in a variety of dance styles: ballet, modern, jazz, break dancing, soft shoe. “One of the reasons why I took on the show as a director and choreographer was because I felt that only a 52 EncoreAtlantA.com

choreographer could tell the story,” he told Playbill magazine. “It’s been a real treat for me to just let the show dance, and to let dance help tell the story.” Taking a musical on the road before it goes to Broadway may seem challenging, but Hydzik finds it creatively stimulating. “It’s a great opportunity. We can find out what works — kind of like a comic finetuning his dialogue.” Ultimately, he says,“It’s a good story — a powerful story, and they made something different with it.” He even thinks it’s better than the movie. For Hydzik, the beauty of the story is that chasing a dream doesn’t mean leaving everything else behind.

By Bo Shurling Since 2000, Atlanta resident Vern Yip has been most recognizable for saving homeowners and others from disastrous décor in his role of a design interventionist on such TV shows as Trading Spaces, Deserving Design, HGTV Showdown, First Time Design, Bang for Your Buck and HGTV’s Design Star.

education, the best medical car, and the best chance at having a really successful and productive life,” Yip says. “I have always been so appreciative of that.” His appreciation grew more after a return trip to China.

In 2010 he became a UNICEF ambassador — another interventionist role, but now he’s helping save some of the world’s most vulnerable children. He’s fundraising, educating and advocating in support of the organization’s work in more than 190 countries. He became involved with UNICEF for very personal reasons. His father, a biochemist, and mother, a child psychiatrist, left China during the Cultural Revolution (1965-68). They moved to Hong Kong, where Yip was born, moving to the United States when he was 2 months old. His father became a busboy and his mother washed floors at a bank. Over time they worked themselves into better jobs and became successful entrepreneurs, opening several businesses. But they never returned to the careers they had in China. “They made this huge sacrifice so my sister and I could have access to the best 54 EncoreAtlantA.com

UNICEF Ambassador Vern Yip is all smiles with students at a dormitory school in Khuvsghul province, Mongolia.

“I saw all these faces that looked like mine, but they just don’t have access to the type of opportunities that we take for granted in this country,” Yip explains. “We turn on the faucet and water appears. We get sick and go to the nearest clinic, doctor or hospital. We go to schools to get an education. We think all of this is natural and normal — and it should be — but

On a UNICEF trip to Mongolia in September 2012, Yip learned that schools don’t necessarily exist in rural areas of the country. At age 6 most children spend nine months a year away from their families, at school in more populated areas. Some schools and dormitories 56 EncoreAtlantA.com

lack plumbing or heat, even though Mongolian temperatures can drop 40 degrees below zero. “Imagine being a child and having to walk outside to the bathroom, which is basically a hole in the ground, in that kind of weather with no light,” Yip says. “When asked about an education, they say, ‘It is important because it is my future and I want a better way of life.’ ” A design background is one of the skills Yip brings to UNICEF. that is not the situation for so many of the world’s children.” Yip is passionate about children’s ability to get an education but also understands the importance of making sure they can survive. “Survival means access to vaccines, water, nutrition. You have to satisfy those basic needs.”

He was on a premed track in school and, during breaks, worked at the National Institute of Health. Instead of focusing on the medical work researchers did, however, his thoughts turned to questions like “Why is the lighting so bad in this room? Why are the walls painted that color?” Two weeks before starting medical school, he told his mother that he was, “put on this Earth to design.” The two consulted a family friend — I.M. Pei, the renowned master of modern architecture. His advice: Go to Georgia 58 EncoreAtlantA.com

Tech. Yip did, earning a master’s degree in architecture and an MBA for “something to fall back on.” In 2000, he was named Southeast Designer of the Year. A magazine touting his achievement landed on the desk of the production company putting together “Trading Spaces” on the cable channel TLC, and he was offered a job. Yip will bring some of his UNICEF work back to Atlanta in late April at Mason Murer Fine Art, when he hosts the UNICEF Experience, a family-friendly event at which attendees can experience some of the organization’s field work. (Details at www. unicefusa.org/about/special-events/unicefexperience/atlanta-experience.html) “This gives families access to the field. They can touch and see mosquito netting, see a school-in-a-box or carry a jug of water to experience what many people in the world have to do to have water just to survive,” he says. It also gives people a chance to get educated about what happens daily with some of the world’s most vulnerable children. of the organization’s field work into the design, once draping, for example, mosquito nets in the décor to remind attendees that malaria is the leading cause of death for African children under age 5. In 2010, 22,000 lights decorated the ballroom, each representing the number of children who die every day of preventable causes. (UNICEF says that rate dropped to 19,000 in 2012. The goal is to make it zero.) Although design was in his destiny — as a child he created steel and glass furniture for his bedroom and an addition to his house — he almost became a doctor. “I always loved design but I come from a culture where your parents encourage you to go into something with which you know you are going to be able to support a family,” Yip says.
