The

‘Beauty ’ is a

beast

How 580 costume pieces create a teapot, carpet and candlestick — without chaos By Bo Shurling

I

n Beauty and the Beast, which originated as an 18thcentury folktale, a prince is transformed into a beast by an enchantress because he is “spoiled, selfish, unkind … and has no love in his heart.” If the Beast can learn to love and have someone love him in return by his 21st birthday, he will be transformed back into the prince. Onstage, magical transformations happen long before that moment – not much of a spoiler due to the popularity of the 1991 Disney movie and subsequent Broadway musical. Backstage the human actors must become a teapot, a clock, a carpet, a candlestick, a wardrobe and, of course, a beast. Creating that process fell largely to costume designer Ann Hould-Ward, who won a 1994 Tony Award for her work on the Broadway production. “There was a lot of pressure to take this iconic movie and convert it in such a way that would make it just as iconic in the theater as it was in the movie house,” she says. “People love the movie, so I was challenged with how much do I give the audience so that it really relates to the movie, and how much do I change the costumes so that they actually operate on a human body?” Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 11

Typically on Broadway, Hould-Ward gets six months to a year to create costumes. The process includes months and months of research, collaboration with the director, choreographer, costume shops and wardrobe supervisor, and thousands of samples of fabric. She is charged with designing the look of a costume as well as its durability and practicality. “Something a lot of people don’t think about is the wear and tear put on the costumes just based on the show’s logistics,” she says. “Costumes are worn eight times a week by people who, in addition to regular perspiration, are on an adrenaline rush, which I have learned over the years creates a different type of chemical perspiration that just seems to wear out the fabric faster.” Hould-Ward doesn’t travel with the show, so caring for the 580 costume pieces and dressing the 30-member company falls to wardrobe supervisor Laci Bradshaw and her assistant, who travel with the show. Eight local dressers are hired in each city. Each of those dressers, whose experience levels vary, is responsible for dressing up to four performers each night. Most changes take place backstage where costumes are organized in 14 gondolas, which Bradshaw describes as “rolling closets” that are about 6 feet wide. Some quick changes take place in the wings.

Costume designer Ann Hould-Ward with a few of her Beauty and the Beast creations.

gets exhaustive directions. She’s also responsible for getting the costumes cleaned. Each week some go to dry cleaners, who must be prepared and know how to handle a wide variety of fabrics and textures, follow detailed instructions and get everything back to the theater before the next show. Machine washable costumes are cleaned on an “every-other-night rotating basis” in venues that have washers and dryers. Bradshaw, also tasked with daily maintenance — painting and dyeing fabrics and repairing shoes, says, “I’m never bored.” This tour is scheduled to end in June 2013 but may go on, she says.

The scene backstage is incredibly organized, with very little chaos despite what audiences might imagine, Hould-Ward says.

“The show is doing so well. We sell out a lot. It is a classic that people love. It just keeps going.”

“Things can get a little chaotic on our first night in a venue as the local dressers figure out their role and how to go about it,” says Bradshaw, who makes sure each assistant

In the business of arts and culture The Goat Farm in Atlanta’s West Midtown is many things, but mostly it’s a for-profit arts enterprise that’s working out By Bo Shurling on’t be surprised if you hear the turkey squawking.

Even so, on its Facebook page, the Goat Farm calls itself an arts center. Anthony Harper and Chris Melhouse, owners and developers of the property, are emphatic that it’s an arts center, but that first and foremost, it’s something else. “We are not a collective, we are not a coop and we are not a hippie commune,” Harper says. “We are a business — a forprofit business that is in the business of supporting arts and culture.” That was not their original plan. 14 EncoreAtlantA.com

The 12-acre space in West Midtown opened in 1889 to make cotton gins. In 2008, when Harper and Melhouse saw it, caved-in roofs and broken windows pocked its red-brick buildings, which seemed on the verge of collapse. They planned to build apartments and condos on one side and a commercial area with restaurants and shops on the other. They contracted to manage the property, then in 2010, bought it. “After spending about 30 or 60 days walking around the property — mostly trying to talk ourselves out of it,” Harper says, laughing, “we fell deeply and dangerously in love.” Continued on page 52

Little appreciated at the time, Smile is now considered a lost gem of musical theater and is performed by high school students around the U.S. Turning his talents toward film, Ashman was pivotal in the renaissance of Disney animated musicals and in the development of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (Producer and Lyrics), Beauty and the Beast (Executive Producer and Lyrics) and Aladdin (Lyrics), all with music by Alan Menken. Ashman’s contributions to the revival of classic Disney animated musicals were perhaps best expressed by the dedication to the film Beauty and the Beast: “To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. He will be forever missed.” Ashman’s numerous awards include two Oscars, two Golden Globes, four Grammys, a Drama Desk and a London Evening Standard. He died in 1991 at age 40 from complications arising from AIDS. Ashman Sings Ashman, a CD of his work, with never-before-heard demos, including those from Smile, is available from PS Classics. Ashman’s papers are in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. TIM RICE (Lyrics) (Sir Tim to you) has been writing lyrics for musical theatre and related enterprises for more than forty years, something he only intended to do for a few months while waiting to become a pop star. The waiting has been extended, mainly because of the world’s failure to accept him as a rock god, but also because of the distracting success of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita with Andrew Lloyd Webber; Aladdin, King David and Beauty and the Beast with Alan Menken; Chess with Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson; and The Lion King and Aida with Elton John. He is well known in England, his home country, for his love of cricket and as a tolerable radio and television personality. He has won numerous awards along the way, including Oscars, Tonys and life-saving badges, but often for the wrong thing and often for simply turning up. He is currently working on a musical play about Machiavelli, and is plugging the recently released DVD and album of Chess in Concert starring Josh 26 EncoreAtlantA.com

While working as a development executive at CBS, Linda Woolverton wrote two young adult novels: Star Wind and Running Before the Wind. After her books were published by Houghton Mifflin, she abandoned development and began to write full time. She started by writing scripts for animated television shows. When one of her novels caught the attention of a Disney executive, she was hired to write the script for the animated feature, Beauty and the Beast. Upon its release in 1991, the film won the Golden Globe for the Best Comedy/ Musical and became the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award. Woolverton was then hired to write the screenplay for The Lion King (shared credit). She then rewrote the script for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (shared credit) as well as writing for the animated feature Mulan. She went on to adapt the script of Beauty and the Beast for the Broadway stage and received the Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 1994. Woolverton was also awarded the Laurence Oliver Award for Beauty and the Beast for Best New Musical in the U.K. Beauty and the Beast ran between 1994 and 2007, becoming the sixth-longestrunning show in Broadway history. She also wrote the book (shared) for Elton John and Tim Rice’s musical Aida, which ran for five years at the Palace Theatre. Linda Woolverton’s script for Alice In Wonderland directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, was released in March of 2010. It grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and is the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time. Woolverton’s screenplay for Disney’s Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie will be released in March of 2014. She is presently adapting the Alice screenplay for the theatre as well as scripting “Through the Looking Glass” for Disney. ROB ROTH (Director) received a Tony Award nomination as Best Director for his Broadway debut with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. etiquette 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

Continued from page 14 The site is deceptive. The lights of downtown seem within arm’s reach, yet you feel far removed from civilization. It’s an industrial gothic compound and arts sanctuary with an abundance of green space. The Goat Farm is many things: rehearsal space, live-work artist studios, a place to convene, a venue for live indie music and hard-to-categorize events, and home to an emerging supper club. The Goat Farm today has more than 400 loft apartments and studio spaces, both of which are rented to people pursuing creative endeavors. It has six acres of outdoor and indoor performance and exhibition space, including the 10,000-square-foot Goodson Yard, and a venue that measures 2,500 square feet. 52 EncoreAtlantA.com

The site includes the Warhorse coffee shop and library; the PushStart Kitchen restaurant; a floral and design firm; the organic Fresh Roots Farm; and yes, goats, along with a few chickens and that turkey. The dance troupe gloATL and theater companies SAÏAH International and the Collective Project are artists-inresidence. AMC’s “The Walking Dead” filmed here, as did the movie Catching Fire: The Hunger Games. The business model has created quick success in a little more than two years. The waiting list for apartment space is at 289, give or take; 80 percent of available studio space has been built. Then there’s that atypical support for the arts. Harper and Melhouse use a portion of apartment and studio rental fees to create

arts and investment packages. To qualify, performers and artists — who need not live there — submit proposals to a review board. The Goat Farm provides those chosen with space, resources, some staff and other logistics for free. “We take care of the technical, logistical and production backbone of a project — all of the boring stuff — for no cost,” Harper says. “So they can focus on the creative side of their project.” Instead of using a portion of rental revenue for marketing or “typical boring real estate” ads, they’re invested in arts projects. Harper admits that the idea is somewhat altruistic, but says it’s also self-serving. “As long as the performances are selected well, they create a tremendous amount of buzz,” he says. “We can take money and put it in one ad or invest it into a performance. If that performance is perceived well, then it gets written up in multiple publications and maybe even mentioned on the radio. Instead of one ad, we are getting five or six ‘ads’ for that same dollar.” Harper hopes some of Atlanta’s nonprofit arts organizations — “where art funding is anemic” — will consider his business model. He and Melhouse have started talking with developers in Castleberry Hill and downtown Atlanta about bringing their mix of business and arts/culture knowledge to projects there. “What we are doing here,” Harper says, “is being seen as a possible solution for helping revitalize downtown Atlanta.”

54 EncoreAtlantA.com

“We are a business — a forprofit business that is in the business of supporting arts and culture,” says Goat Farm entrepreneur Anthony Harper.

It’s OK to play!

Plenty of places can help grown-ups rediscover their inner child By Laura Raines

Puppets, which have always had a niche in Atlanta theater, are in the spotlight again nationally and internationally. As a child you were endlessly creative, fun-seeking and fearless about play. You worked at it like a job, only it was more fun. Now you’ve got a real job and lots of other responsibilities. But it’s never too late to play. In fact, it’s good for you, say a number of Atlanta business owners who encourage grown-ups to lighten up and rediscover their inner child. A sampling follows. Wired and Fired

Tired of dressing up to plan country club events, Erinn Grier bought a 56 EncoreAtlantA.com

pottery-painting studio nine years ago and began inviting kids, adults, groups and parties to come create. You can choose to decorate any of the 200 bisque dishes or figures available. The studio will fire your masterpiece for pickup three days later. “I go home covered in paint every day, but who cares, it washes out,” says Grier. “You could say that I’ve definitely connected with my inner child.” First dates, anniversary celebrations, team-building exercises and parties happen naturally at this West Midtown spot, where it’s OK to move the tables, bring in food or wine, and have fun.

“There are a lot of myths about talent, but the truth is that you can develop musical skills at any age,” says Casey McMann of Eclectic Music.

Details at http://www.wiredfired.com or 404.885.1024. Eclectic Music “There are a lot of myths about talent, but the truth is that you can develop musical skills at any age,” says Casey McMann, owner and director of Eclectic Music in Atlanta. “It’s never too late to explore that part of yourself.” Feeling lucky to have grown up in a loving, musical family that played and sang together, McCann and her instructors try to re-create that atmosphere for their students at three locations — in Virginia-Highland, Ansley Park and Morningside. Eclectic Music offers individual and group instruction on a variety of instruments — guitar, piano, bells, violin, ukelele, percussion, and brass and wind —and voice and songwriting lessons for all ages. Jam sessions, parties and kids’ summer camps are part of the fun. “Our approach aims to take the fear and intimidation out of music,” McCann says. The instruction is anything but stuffy. She interviews students to see what and how they want to learn. Maybe they want to read music or just learn chords on a guitar so they can sing with their children. McCann pairs them with a teacher. “We encourage students to quit worrying about perfection and just play.” She might tell an adult guitar student to think like he’s 14, in his room, putting off his math homework and to just let go and enjoy it. “It’s so

Bob Grier/ Whitney Swieder

“Adults beat themselves up,” Grier says. “They think they aren’t creative, or it has to be perfect. When we hear, ‘I can’t,’ we say, ‘of course you can.’ We tell them to just relax, and help guide them. So what if they go outside the lines. It’s only pottery. When they get past the fear, they have a great time.” Grier loves the surprise on people’s faces when they pick up their work and say, “Well that’s not so bad. I could put that out.”

At Sky Gym adults can learn how to fly through the air.

Aerial Silks Atlanta Amber Monson saw a Cirque du Soleil performer doing aerial dancing under the Brooklyn Bridge 10 years ago, and got chills. “I loved fitness and dance and realized that this was my passion,” she says of aerial dancing, a term used for any kind of acrobatic arts done suspended from wires, hoops or silk ropes. Monson found instructors, earned national certifications and became the director/owner of the Sky Gym, now in Sandy Springs, where she teaches others how to twirl, twist, swing and fly through the air. “I realized that if I made my passion my profession, I would never have to grow 60 EncoreAtlantA.com
