May 24, 1964: A New Record Hello, Dolly! Sets a new record for most Antoinette Perry Awards won by a show. Ten Tony Awards in all: Best Musical, Best Composer and Lyricist, Best Author, Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Conductor, Best Producer, and Best Actress.

October 10, 1965: International Incident Hello, Dolly! makes front page news when the touring company headed by Mary Martin begins a special State Department tour performing at U.S. military bases in Saigon, Vietnam, as well as Tokyo, Korea, and London.

December 27, 1970: 2,844 Performances Hello, Dolly! closes at the St. James after 2,844 performances, having shattered the record for the longest-running musical in Broadway history formerly held by My Fair Lady.

April 20, 2017: Back Where They Belong Hello, Dolly!, starring Bette Midler, opens at the Shubert Theatre. The new production is directed by Jerry Zaks, choreographed by Warren Carlyle, has sets and costumes designed by Santo Loquasto, lights designed by Natasha Katz, and musical direction by Andy Einhorn.

June 11, 2017: Tony Awards The 2017 revival wins four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING OPENING NIGHT AT THE ALLIANCE THEATRE The Alliance Theatre opened the English-language premiere of Maybe Happy Ending on January 29. CAROLEE CARMELLO (Dolly Gallagher Levi) has appeared in 14 Broadway musicals and is a threetime Tony Award-nominee for her performances in Parade, Lestat and Scandalous. She recently completed a year-long run as Mrs. Lovett in the critically acclaimed Sweeney Todd at New York’s Barrow Street Theatre.

MICHAEL STEWART (Book) was still relatively early in his theatrical career when he had his first smash hit in 1960 with Bye Bye Birdie, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Book. His subsequent Broadway shows include Carnival! (Drama Critics Circle Award); Hello, Dolly!

(Tony Award, Drama Critics Circle Award); George M! (with Francine and John Pascal); Mack & Mabel (Tony nomination); The Grand Tour; 42nd Street (with Mark Bramble; Tony Award); and Harrigan and Hart (Tony nomination). He is also the lyricist of Barnum (music by Cy Coleman, Tony nomination) and I Love My Wife (Tony nomination).

Mr. Stewart died in 1987.

24 | encore JERRY HERMAN (Music & Lyrics) remains one of the most iconic and beloved composers in the American theater. His legendary scores have spawned such standards as “I Am What I Am,” “The Best of Times,” “Mame,” “If He Walked into My Life,” “We Need a Little Christmas” and “Hello, Dolly!” His first Broadway musical, Milk and Honey (1961), ran for 543 performances. He made history in 1964 with Hello, Dolly!

(10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, a Broadway record held for 37 years), which was followed by yet another smash, Mame, in 1966.

With Dolly! and Mame still running, Herman had the rare distinction of having three Broadway shows playing simultaneously when Dear World opened in 1969. In 1974, Mack & Mabel opened (and remains one of his best-loved scores) and was followed by 1979’s The Grand Tour.

Herman’s most recent Broadway show, La Cage aux Folles, became another phenomenon, winning the Tony Award in 1984 for Best Musical. It was successfully revived in 2004 and 2010, winning the Tony for Best Revival each time. Two of Herman’s most cherished songs from Hello, Dolly! are the emotional highlights of the Disney-Pixar classic Wall-E, cementing Herman’s place in American popular culture. His countless awards and honors include multiple Tony Awards, Grammy Awards, Olivier Awards, Drama Desk Awards, the Johnny Mercer Award, the Richard Rodgers Award, the Oscar Hammerstein Award, the Frederick Loewe Award, membership in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Theater Hall of Fame and most recently, The Kennedy Center Honor.

GOWER CHAMPION (Original Director and Choreographer) is a name synonymous with some of the greatest musicals in Broadway history. In addition to Hello, Dolly!, which cemented his reputation as

a legendary theater artist and garnered him Tony Awards for both Direction and Choreography, he directed and choreographed Bye Bye Birdie (Tony Awards for Direction and Choreography), Carnival! (Tony nomination for Direction), I Do! I Do! (Tony nomination for Direction), The Happy Time (Tony for both Direction and Choreography), Sugar (Tony nominations for Direction and Choreography), Mack & Mabel (Tony nominations for Direction and Choreography), and 42nd Street (Tony for Choreography, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography, Tony nomination for Direction). His first Broadway credit as choreographer, Lend an Ear, won him his first Tony Award for Choreography in 1949. He studied dance from an early age and, at the age of 15, toured nightclubs with his friend Jeanne Tyler and later with Marge Belcher, who eventually became his wife. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, Champion worked on Broadway as a solo dancer and choreographer. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, the team of Gower and Marge Champion became one of the most popular attractions on television variety shows, appearing on “Jack Benny,” “Garry Moore,” “Dinah Shore,” “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and in their own series, “The Marge and Gower Champion Show,” in 1957.

The pair also appeared in several film musicals with Bing Crosby (Mr. Music, 1950), Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel (Show Boat, 1951; Lovely to Look At, 1952), Debbie Reynolds (Give a Girl a Break, 1953), Betty Grable (Three for the Show, 1955), Esther Williams (Jupiter’s Darling, 1955) and occasionally earned their own top billing (Everything I Have Is Yours, 1952). Gower Champion died in 1980 on the day that 42nd Street, his last great hit, opened on Broadway.

He was awarded the last of his eight Tony Awards posthumously.

DAVID MERRICK (Original Producer) claimed to be born on November 4, 1954, the night his first Broadway musical Fanny opened. His second production, in 1955, was Thornton Wilder’s comedy The Matchmaker.

At a time when few producers managed more than one production a year, he stunned Broadway in 1957 with three hits in one month (including John Osborne’s ground breaking Look Back in Anger). TICKET OFFICE The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is in the arcade entrance to the theater. It is open for walk-up ticket sales 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. It is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Ticket Office opens two hours before show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour before show time.

GROUP SALES The Fox Theatre Group Sales Department offers discounts to groups for most Broadway shows. It is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call 404-881-2000 or email foxgroup@foxtheatre.org.

CONCESSIONS Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, main lobby and on the mezzanine lobby level.

TOURS Fox Theatre Tours are conducted at 10 a.m., 1 1 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. FOX THEATRE BALLROOMS The Egyptian Ballroom, Grand Salon, and Spanish Room were all originally Shriner meeting spaces. Here are some other fun facts: • The Egyptian Ballroom was reserved for Shriner ceremonies and celebrations and the adjoining Grand Salon served as their library.

• The 7,500-square foot Egyptian Ballroom’s original floor is hard rock maple. A custom-designed carpet with Egyptian symbols of the afterlife and resurrection now protects the maple floor.

• In the 1970s, the walls of the Egyptian Ballroom were covered with several coats of paint obscuring the original stenciled designs. As years of paint were removed, vivid Egyptian symbols for life and rebirth were revealed.

• Depicted on the Egyptian Ballroom’s balcony is a scarab, or dung beetle, which was the symbol for the sun god Ra, who was thought to ward off evil.

It is surrounded by the wings of Osiris, god of the underworld, afterlife, and resurrection.

• Above the Egyptian Ballroom’s stage stretch the gilded and glazed wings of Osiris. A plaster intaglio panel of Ramses II subduing an enemy is the focal point of the stage.

• Although the symbols painted in the Egyptian Ballroom are actual hieroglyphics, when put together, they do not form any real phrases.
