“Partnering with GPB on this show allows us to take deep dives into the science of the brain and mind, to really take the time necessary to explain and understand often complex issues and conditions. We don’t have to reduce it to a single soundbite,” says Jaye Watson, executive producer, host and writer for the GPB Original television series Your Fantastic Mind, which is produced in partnership with Emory University and the Emory Brain Health Center. At the time of this writing, Watson and the production team behind Your Fantastic Mind were working on episodes for season two of the series, premiering Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. For the premiere episode, “COVID-19,” Your Fantastic Mind shares the story of a family of six who has been sheltering in place since March, illustrating the impact of COVID on children and working parents. “When we were researching brain and mind impacts of COVID for our premiere episode, it became apparent we needed to include a family in the show,” Watson explains. “I used Facebook to crowd source a request for a family sheltering in place who would allow us to spend time with them and show their life. The family we found was wonderful, and they serve as a sort of the center for the episode. They were very honest with us about their struggles - struggles most of us are experiencing these days.” Like the family struggles in “COVID-19,” Watson hopes to provide viewers with something relatable and “consumable” in each episode, including practical advice and tips to put to use in their own lives. “In our hour- long episode on memory, we spend time with some Chicago nuns who have been research participants for 25 years,” says Watson. “What scientists have learned from them has created a list of things we can do in our lives to protect our cognitive abilities as we age. Knowing or taking a second language, playing a musical instrument, having a social group and traveling are all neuroprotective things we can do.”

Watson continues with an example from the episode “Stress.” “We get down to the nitty gritty, showing you how to make meditation or mindfulness part of your life. We take you through it step by step and highlight the important research that shows the profound impact it can have on our brains and our lives,” says Watson. In a world of differing opinions around science and research, what does she think is the value of a series like Your Fantastic Mind? “We have the gift of telling deep, meaningful, helpful stories that pertain to all of us,” says Watson. “Our world may be fractured, but this show is about what we have in common, and this season we are helping people maximize the power of their brains to improve their mental and physical health.”

GPB RADIO PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
If you’re exhausted by the news but can’t seem to focus on anything else, It’s Been A Minute with Sam Sanders, a weekly show airing at 2 p.m. Saturdays on GPB Atlanta 88.5 FM and across the GPB Radio network, will help. “We hope the show hits them like a good novel,” said host and former NPR political reporter Sam Sanders when speaking about listener response to the program. It’s Been a Minute is described as an irreverent, casual space to process the pace of current events with a wrap of the week, paired with in-depth interviews with musicians, actors, and newsmakers. “We also hope the show reminds people that it’s ok to still have questions and to still be figuring out just how to feel about everything going on in the world right now,” concludes Sanders.
