PREMIERES
TUESDAY | MARCH 23 | 8 PM Born in 1925, Savannah, Georgia native Flannery O’Connor is considered one of the greatest short story writers of the 20th century. A devout Catholic who collected peacocks and walked with crutches (due to a diagnosis of lupus that would take her life before the age of 40), O’Connor’s provocative, award-winning fiction about southern prophets and girls with wooden legs was unlike anything published before. Flannery O’Connor Over the course of her short-lived but prolific writing career, O’Connor wrote two novels - Wise Blood and The Violent Bear It Away. In addition, she wrote 32 short stories, including “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” “Good Country People” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge.” She never shied away from examining timely themes of racism, religion, socio-economic disparity and more with her characteristic wit and irony. Her distinctive Southern Gothic style influenced generations of artists and activists.

Flannery O’Connor with her two pet peacocks. With her family home at Andalusia, the Milledgeville, Georgia farm where O’Connor grew up and later wrote her best known work as a backdrop, a picture of her sharply aware, starkly redemptive style comes into focus. The documentary features conversations with those who knew O’Connor and were inspired by her, including Mary Karr, Tommy Lee Jones, Hilton Als and more. Never-before-seen archival footage, newly discovered personal letters and her own published words (read by Mary Steenburgen), alongside original animations and music, help examine the life and legacy of an American literary icon.

XAVIER RIDDLE AND THE SECRET MUSEUM TEACHES KIDS ABOUT HISTORICAL HEROES
March is Women’s History Month, an annual celebration of women’s contributions to our society and culture. To mark the occasion, we’re spotlighting Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, airing Monday – Friday at 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on GPB. Based on the children’s book series Ordinary People Change the World by Brad Meltzer, the television series is a great resource for teaching kids about historical figures and events in fun and age-appropriate ways. Trailblazing women including Rosa Parks, Marie Curie, Maya Angelou and Amelia Earhart are highlighted throughout this month. Each episode follows the adventures of Xavier, his sister Yadina and friend Brad as they tackle everyday problems by traveling back in time to learn from real-life inspirational figures when they were kids. Through these adventures, kids learn about the skills that made these historical figures heroes and find those same qualities within themselves, helping them discover that they too, can change the world. CHECK OUT ARTICLES, GAMES, AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES FROM XAVIER RIDDLE AND THE SECRET MUSEUM LIKE THIS AMELIA EARHART WORD FIND AT PBS.ORG/PARENTS/SHOWS/XAVIER.
