4 | A Word From Teya Ryan Dear GPB Donor, As we move into August and look toward the fall season, GPB has many important programs and initiatives that we want to share with you. Among the television highlights this month, GPB will carry PBS NewsHour’s special coverage of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, taking place respectively the weeks of August 17 and August 24. We’re also taking a deeper look at the issue of race in America with a series of films PBS has curated for online screening events listed below. Additionally, we are proud to partner with the Jessye Norman School of the Arts to produce Shots in the Back: Exhuming the 1970 Augusta Riot, a new six-episode podcast which tells the story of one of the first major Civil Rights era riots in the South and its relevance today. As a public media organization, it is GPB’s hope to deepen understanding and foster conversation around these topics with our programming. This month’s cover story focuses on the new season of Endeavour. Though we look forward each week to seeing how the series’ seasoned detectives will break each case, it’s no mystery to us that GPB could not deliver all of these vital programs and resources without your support. Thank you for your devotion as a loyal donor of GPB. Your support makes it possible for us to continue our work and serve communities across the state and beyond. Teya Ryan, GPB President and CEO

ENDEAVOUR PREMIERES SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 9 PM
Since its PBS premiere in 2012, Endeavour has delighted viewers with plot twists and turns. This year promises to be just as exciting as the series marks the beginning of its seventh season Sunday, August 9 at 9 p.m. on GPB as part of the Masterpiece Summer of Mystery. Based on the characters of novelist Colin Dexter, Endeavour stars Shaun Evans in the title role of Endeavour Morse and began as a prequel to the popular series Inspector Morse, turning back the clock to ‘60s England to tell the story of the making of the legendary detective. Evoking the conflict between tradition and the new youth culture, the young Endeavour Morse prefers Puccini to the Beatles. As season seven of the series begins, he finds himself entering a new decade and era of change with his colleagues. Opening on New Year’s Eve 1969, Endeavour reunites with his team at Castle Gate CID to find old friendships will be challenged, and new relationships will blossom. Amidst the dawn of women’s liberation, social progression and scientific growth, the 1970s begin for Oxford’s finest with the discovery of a body at the canal towpath on New Year’s Day. With the only clue in the investigation coming from a witness who heard whistling on the night of the crime, Endeavour has his work cut out to uncover the culprit.

GPB EDUCATION GET READY FOR SCHOOL
For parents and caregivers looking for a simple way to keep learning going over the summer and explore skills that will prepare students for the school year ahead, GPB Education’s and the Georgia Department of Education’s “Getting Ready” guides are a wonderful resource. GPB Education collaborated with the Georgia Department of Education to identify key skills for children getting ready for kindergarten through third grade. These skills will help families understand what children have already learned and can expect to learn when they get back to school. They include physical health and wellness, language arts, math, social studies and science, and encourage kids to stay active, make friends, read, play with numbers, and explore their world. These skills and guidance are meant to help but are not required. When children return to school, teachers will be excited to meet them where they are and will identify areas of strength and areas of growth. To start exploring the skills in English and Spanish, go to gpb.org/learn.
