between us
Susan Booth: So Kevin, I’m not your dad and this isn’t a garage. Should we tell the nice people how this happened? Kevin Gillese: Tell them how we forged this alliance? Sounds good! Well folks, ever since this dad lost his garage in Inman Park, my company has gone mobile (aka, homeless)... SB: But while you may have lost your home, you haven’t lost your mojo, your hipness, your “so this is what all the cool kids are doing” thing. And, well, what with the Alliance being a solidly middle-aged 46 years old, we want some of that swagger. I sort of think of you as Viagra for the theatre. I mean, not you, personally. ... KG: And in a move that is sure to define “cutting-edge” for years to come... we decided to adapt a film from 1946 into a stage show. We are the heartbeat of the youth in America! Step aside dub step, get out the way snap chat, we’re bringing Jimmy Stewart back! SB: So that’s like retro cool, right? Because the whole cool thing is important. And I know that whenever I see Dad’s Garage perform, I instantly feel about 10 years younger. At least 10. KG: Yes, which is why I’d like to take this opportunity to invite our goodly readers to transport themselves back in time. Ten years back to their younger selves as they soak up the sophomoric Dad’s Garage vibe. Seventy years back as they reconnect with one of the most classic films ever made. But we don’t need the holy power of an angel to navigate the sands of time, oh no, our power comes from something far more terrifying... the power of theatre. Oh man, that wasn’t a cool thing to say, that was so cheesy I think I just gave myself adult-onset lactose intolerance. I blew it.

Laughter THE PURSUIT OF
Look out, Bedford Falls! Dad’s Garage is back to take another whack at a holiday classic
W
By Kathy Janich
hat do you do if you’re homeless at Christmas time? If you’re Kevin Gillese and Dad’s Garage Theatre Company, you hook up with your friend Susan V. Booth and put on a show. Which is exactly what’s happening for the second consecutive season at the Booth-run Alliance Theatre. The Dad’s gang follows last year’s Invasion: Christmas Carol with It’s a Wonderful Laugh, an improvisatory romp through Bedford Falls and the life of one George Bailey. If you’re new to Dad’s, here’s what the company does, as articulated by artistic director Gillese: “We make important things silly and silly things important. We take smart things and try to make them stupid. And we take stupid things and try to make them seem as intelligent as possible. In short: We’re always trying to flip things on their heads in pursuit of laughter.” Two years ago, the 19-year-old Dad’s, which does scripted shows and a full complement of improv (competitions, game shows, TV shows and more) lost its longtime Elizabeth Street home to developers who paved it and put up a parking deck. You’ll now find those crazy kids in residence at 7 Stages in Little Five Points most of the time and, if all continues to go well with 8 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
fund-raising, in a permanent home in the Old Fourth Ward in a few years. Although we expect some of the Dad’s team to impersonate kettle bell-ringers and collect funds this holiday (kidding), six improvisers will have their way with It’s a Wonderful Life, with each performance featuring an invader. You’ll have to watch to see exactly how that plays out. Gillese adapted the script and directs. We spent a few precious email moments getting to know the 33-year-old Canadian better and forcing him to answer our questions. Here’s what we got: Question: What are you and the Dad’s team anticipating about being back at the Hertz? Answer: More than anything we are anticipating a veritable shower of rotting produce descending upon the actors every evening. Or at least we were until people explained to us that the Alliance is not the same as the Globe Theatre in Elizabethan times, which is a relief because we have some female actors in the cast and I was worried I’d have to replace them with men in drag. Q: You are into your fifth year at Dad’s. How has that worked out for you? A: I absolutely love working at Dad’s Garage. As of January, I’ll hit my five-year mark and the time has really flown by, not to mention that it has completely changed my
life (I met my wife by working at Dad’s Garage!). I’ve gotten a lot of satisfaction out of the position because we’ve been growing and making positive changes while simultaneously navigating some of the biggest challenges in the history of the organization (namely losing our space). I’m not going to say it’s been easy, because it hasn’t been, but it’s been rewarding and inspiring, and I’m so excited to keep pushing us to bigger and better things. Q: Is it what you expected? What surprised you? A: The arts education landscape in Atlanta has surprised me. I come from a city where the arts are very accessible to young people and that ends up shaping their tastes as adults. I’m not saying that every kid in Edmonton grows up to be a fan of ballet and opera, but rather that the idea of going to a live show is a normal thing. In Atlanta it sometimes feels like many of the people walking through our doors are coming into a theatre for the first time, and they’re a bit dubious, like, “Man, if this sucks, I’m bailing.” I think that’s a big part of the value Dad’s Garage brings to the local scene. We’re an entry point for folks to get their first taste of live theatre and we go out of our way to make it fun and accessible. As we like to say: “We’re the gateway drug to the arts.” Q: What is it about improv that piqued your interest? A: It’s the only art form where you get to create in the moment and get instant feedback about your work. This is the best training I can possibly imagine for writers, actors, directors. When we make a choice onstage, the audience will immediately tell us if that choice is working. As a result, we’re getting trained over time to have good habits, to make good choices, to create the kind of work that people want to see. Q: How would you describe your sense of humor? A: More than anything, I love discovering humor in the depths of human emotion. In my opinion, someone who can bring you to the brink of tears and then make you laugh out loud, is an absolute master. I’m not saying I’m there yet, but I certainly try. Also, I have a soft spot for dad jokes, which is fitting, considering. A

profiles JACKIE BARBOUR (Violet) has been doing theatre since she was 10. She’s been in several productions from Oklahoma! to A Slight Case of Murder and, more recently, Atlanta’s longest-running comedy, Peachtree Battle at Ansley Park Playhouse. She has also worked on the set of the new TV series “Halt and Catch Fire.” You can catch her performing improv at Dad’s Garage Theatre. KAREN CASSADY (Clarence) is honored to be able to perform at the Alliance Theatre with Dad’s Garage! Other Atlanta credits: Grimm Fairy Tales, 12 Angry Jurors (New London Theater) Hairspray (MJCCA), Peachtree Battle (Ansley Park Playhouse), Zonkers, Musicals Suck: The Musical, 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, Invasion: Christmas Carol (Dad’s Garage Theatre) TV/film: “Too Many Cooks,” “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell.” Let’s have fun!! PERRY FROST (Mary) is part of the Woodruff Arts Center family, through her involvement in the Arts4Learning youth program. She is a recent addition to the ensemble at Laughing Matters, one of Atlanta’s most respected and enduring improv collectives. She is also the youngest improviser at Dad’s Garage. As whippersnapper in residence, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to earn her Invasion stripes, and invites you to watch her squander it in unprecedented ways. MATT HORGAN (Old Man Potter; Uncle Billy; God) is excited to be back at the Alliance, where last year he was too heavy for the Ghost of Christmas Past’s floating entrance rig and shattered it like a child’s toy. This is why we can’t have nice things. Matt has been with Dad’s for more than 15 years and, in that time, has demolished every last shred of decency and dignity he ever had. Tonight will be no exception. Happy holidays! 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
ED MORGAN (Harry) has appeared in several Dad’s Garage original productions including Song of the Living Dead, The Change: A Teenage Werewolf Musical, Dementia Juice and Invasion: Christmas Carol, as well as co-writing some nerd-fest called The Wrath of Con. At the time of writing this biography, he has still not seen It’s a Wonderful Life, so we’ll see how this goes. DAN TRIANDIFLOU (George Bailey) is happy to be back at Alliance Theatre where he played Maximillian Von Oster and Peter Rhys-Davies in last season’s By the Way, Meet Vera Stark. As part of the Dad’s Garage Ensemble, directing credits include What’s Wrong With You?, Apnea, The Wrath of Con and the original Invasion: Christmas Carol. In 2012, Creative Loafing critics and readers voted him “Best Local Actor.” He received a Suzi nomination for his portrayal of Ellard in The Foreigner (Theatrical Outfit). Dan plays Benji on the Adult Swim show “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell” and, in the last year, played supporting roles on episodes of “Finding Carter” and “Devious Maids.” He was a young Rudy Giuliani in the film Empire State, George Klein in the miniseries Elvis, and appears in such other films as Anchorman 2, Endless Love, Savage and the upcoming Selma. This one is for you, Jo-Jo. JAMIE BULLINS (Set Designer) is resident designer, coordinator of design/tech and an associate professor at Kennesaw State University in the Department of Theatre & Performance Studies. What a strange and stunning journey with these folks from Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical in 2004. A decade of Dad’s. Damn. Recent design and directing work includes Courage (Alliance Theatre); Pump Boys and Dinettes (GET); 3rd annual Atlanta One-Minute Play Festival (Actor’s Express); Same Time, Next Year (True Colors); and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Serenbe Playhouse). Upcoming projects:
profiles Arms and the Man, Lewis & Clark on the Road to the Pacific (New Works Festival; KSU). ALEXA ANN CATHCART (Costume Designer) is so excited to be spending another holiday season working with her Dad’s Garage family and the wonderful people at the Alliance Theatre! She graduated from the fantastic Department of Theatre & Performance Studies at Kennesaw State University and has worked on a bunch of shows with Dad’s, most notably: The Change, Slaughter Camp, Wrath of Con, Apnea, Song of the Living Dead, Invasion: A Christmas Carol, Gutenberg! The Musical! and now Invasion: It’s a Wonderful Laugh! Big ups to the Jamies, Brittany, Elizabeth, Liz, Daniel, her sweet friends and wonderful family for all of the love and lessons. JOSHUA SANTAMARIA (Lighting Designer) is a graduate of Georgia College and State University where he studied theater with an emphasis in lighting, acting and directing. He works in lighting for Turner Broadcasting, BET, The Weather Channel, DGTV and others. His past designs for Dad’s Garage include Gutenberg! the Musical!, Dementia Juice and Wrath of Con. He would like to thank Dad’s Garage and The Alliance Theatre for this amazing opportunity to work with them. DAN BAUMAN (Sound Designer) has seen It’s a Wonderful Life every year since he was 6. It’s not Christmas without George, Clarence and Zuzu’s petals. He’s terrified by what Dad’s Garage will do to it. Dan designs sound all over town, plays bass for the Dirt Poets and co-hosts “The Nine Billion Names of Pod” podcast. Big love to Courtney. MELISA A. DUBOIS (Properties Master) was a paralegal for 17 years before leaving to pursue a full-time career in theatrical prop design. Design credits include Reefer Madness, Wrath of Con, Song of the Living Dead and Invasion: A
Christmas Carol (Dad’s Garage Theatre Company); Angry Fags (7 Stages); Le Liaisons Dangereuses (Actor’s Express); “The Andy Candy Series,” “Lets Go To Cleveland,” and various Farm Rich/ Seapak commercials (DGTV). LUV2JAW! MATT HOBBS (Musical Arrangements) has worked as musical improviser at Dad’s Garage since 2012. His recent productions with Dad’s include (italics) Gutenberg! The Musical! as well as lots of improv shows. A New Orleans native and avid singer-songwriter, Matt has been living in Atlanta since 2010, where he’s also been writing songs, performing with bands, and playing solo shows. BECKY TERRY (Stage Manager) is super excited to be working with Dad’s Garage again ... and at the Alliance! Becky has stage managed quite a few Dad’s Garage shows including, but not limited to, Fingertips, Clash Titan Clash, 44 Plays for 44 Presidents and Scratch: The Revengence! KEVIN GILLESE (Writer /Director) started improvising with Rapid Fire Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta as a teenager in 1996. As an undergraduate he studied theatre and creative writing at the University of Alberta. He then went on to take the post-graduate comedy writing and performance program at Humber College in Toronto. Kevin is one-half of the comedy duo Scratch (with Arlen Konopaki), which has toured several times across Canada, Europe and Australia (highlights include appearances at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the English Theatre of Berlin and the Vancouver International Improv Festival). So far the Scratch boys have written two plays together: Revengence and Effed Up Fairy Tales, both produced at the Edmonton Fringe Festival and at Dad’s. Kevin was the associate artistic director of Rapid Fire Theatre from 2005-2007, before becoming the artistic director of the company (2008-2009). He became artistic director ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG 15
profiles at Dad’s Garage Theatre in 2010, a title which he amazingly still holds. Some of his favorite theatre projects since taking the reins down South include directing the only production of Two Gentlemen of Lebowski approved by the Coen Brothers, co-writing/co-directing The Supervillain Monologues, directing the heart-touching comedy V.I.P. Room and co-writing/directing Musicals Suck: The Musical! He is most proud, though, of launching a new wing of the company: Dad’s Garage TV. In just a few years DGTV has won an award at the L.A. Comedy Festival for best music video, been a finalist in the AV Club’s Parameter Film Festival, and produced both a ton of online videos and some commercials for broadcast. In his spare time Kevin is a loving husband to his beautiful wife, Amber. DAD’S GARAGE THEATRE has grown from a small volunteer-led organization founded in 1995 to a thriving midsize theatre led by professional, artistic and administrative staff. The family at Dad’s has continued to grow along with us including more than 300 volunteers and performers. Dad’s gives a new definition to the phrase “original work” with innovative world premiere plays created by the Dad’s Garage family (like the upcoming King of Pops: The Musical!, an original work written by ensemble member, Mike Schatz). In addition to outrageous original scripted productions, Dad’s Garage produces improv shows year-round. It performs traditional and original improv formats including the improvised soap opera Scandal!, TheatreSports (as the only officially sanctioned team in the Southeast) and Japanesestyle game show Samurai Davis Jr. and Dim Sum’s Super Mega Happy Fun Time Improv Show! By creating a supportive environment for an artistic, technical and administrative ensemble, Dad’s is able to elevate awareness of the Atlanta community to original theatrical 16 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
works and the creative outlets found through improvisation. This leads to the production of more than 350 performances a year and the training of new improvisers in our High School Outreach Program, as well as on-site classes and workshops for the general public. Now a fixture in the Atlanta arts scene, Dad’s Garage has won Best Theatre and Best Improv Troupe in Creative Loafing for 10 years, as well as similar awards in almost every major publication in the city. SUSAN V. BOOTH ( Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on projects including Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked at theatres including the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. by Celise Kalke Frank Capra completed It’s a Wonderful Life in 1946 after both its star, Jimmy Stewart, and its director returned from serving in the Second World War. The film looks backward to film noir and the economic frankness of films from the 1930s. It also looks forward to the postwar celebration of home and hearth. It’s European in its social conscience and American in its embrace of sentimentality. Once the film entered public domain and annual showings began, popular culture enshrined it as a Christmas classic. Zuzu’s pedals and Clarence’s wings have obscured the vast quantities of alcohol consumed, the child abuse, prostitution, poverty and despair portrayed in the movie. The film grew out of a rough time in American history but symbolizes the nostalgia and relative safety of the 1950s. These contradictions and the film’s amazing script and acting make it a wonderful launching pad for the comic antics of Dad’s Garage. Comedy and improvisation WIKIMEDIA COMMONS
feed on contradiction, and the contradictory realities of the film, and the received tradition we think It’s a Wonderful Life to be has proved a fertile and hilarious jumping-off point.
About the Film
It’s a Wonderful Life Synopsis by Roger Ebert, film critic
It’s a Wonderful Life works like a strong and fundamental fable, sort of a Christmas Carol in reverse: Instead of a mean old man being shown scenes of happiness, we have a hero who plunges into despair. The hero, of course, is George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), a man who never quite makes it out of his quiet birthplace of Bedford Falls. As a young man he dreams of shaking the dust from his shoes and traveling to far-off lands, but one thing and then another keeps him at home — especially his responsibility to the family savings & loan association, which is the only thing standing between Bedford Falls and the greed of Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore), the avaricious local banker. George marries his high school sweetheart (Donna Reed, in her first starring role), settles down to raise a family and helps half the poor folks in town buy homes where they can raise their own. Then, when George’s absent-minded uncle (Thomas Mitchell) misplaces some bank funds during the Christmas season, it looks as if the evil Potter will have his way after all. George loses hope and turns mean (even his face seems to darken). He despairs, and is standing on a bridge contemplating suicide when an Angel 2nd Class named Clarence (Henry Travers) saves him and shows him what life in Bedford Falls would have been like without him. The Alliance has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring, and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical, Come Fly Away, Bring It On: The Musical, Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the American premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings, and most recently, Bull Durham and Harmony — A New Musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. The Alliance also nurtures the careers of playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The work produced by the Alliance gives locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Each year the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department reaches close to 50,000 students through performances, acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level, from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance also offers community education classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development, working with local and national playwrights. An active participant in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatrical techniques to aid in student learning through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

discover us discover us. discover you. In It’s a Wonderful Laugh, I discovered that nothing can be held sacred, even a 60-year-old classic considered one of the greatest movies of all time. I am pretty sure that in one of the performances, George Bailey and Mr. Potter will team up to take over the town together, through a partnership cooking and selling methamphetamines. And in another performance, Clarence may be the one who falls off the bridge because George pushes him by accident. What I also discovered is that if anyone could change the way I watch and think about a movie like this, it is when you join the forces of Dad’s Garage Theatre and the Alliance Theatre. But this type of change is what art is all about: changing your perspective and expanding your mind and expression. And while the likes of Mr. Potter may think improv is not art but rather “just entertainment,” it is quite the opposite. Improv is one of the most underappreciated but yet most utilized forms there is, and is used in virtually all art forms — even oil on canvas. So while you are laughing away watching the show, remember to recognize that you are laughing at art as well, especially when Clarence ends up stealing the money to pay a kid to ring a bell to earn his wings and society turns on poor George Bailey. Hey, I never said art is nice.
