DEAR HIV, WE DIDN’T GIVE UP. XOXO, SCIENCE There is no cure, but science is still in the battle against HIV. Today’s HIV treatments taken every day as prescribed can help you get to and stay undetectable. That means the amount of virus is so low it can’t be measured by lab tests. Research shows that staying undetectable means there’s effectively no risk of transmitting HIV through sex. Ask your healthcare provider about HIV and treatment options.

Long recognized as one of the nation’s most diverse institutions, Georgia State ranks 10th among U.S. News’ most racially and ethnically diverse national universities. The Rialto Center for the Arts exemplifies Georgia State’s values and spirit. Indeed, it is reflective of the extraordinary diversity that is vital to downtown Atlanta’s continued growth. am so thrilled to welcome you to the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University. Can you imagine what the Rialto has seen on this corner of Atlanta since
1916? As the new Director of this historic institution, I want you to join the conversation on how we reinvent ourselves. You can help us shape that future by participating in our surveys this spring. We are reimagining our vision, mission and values, which will inform our future programming and our efforts to reach out and become a brave voice in the community. ver the course of a multifaceted career spanning four decades, Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on standards, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in reenvisioning jazz classics. Ever the fearless voyager, explorer, pioneer, and keeper of tradition, the three-time Grammywinner recently won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album for Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee. Bridgewater’s career has always bridged musical genres. She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band, and throughout the 1970s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world during the 1980s, she relocated to Paris and turned her attention back to jazz. Signing with the Universal Music Group as a producer—Bridgewater produces all

of her albums—she released a series of critically acclaimed titles beginning with Keeping Tradition in 1993. All but one, including her wildly successful double Grammy Award-winning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Dear Ella, have received Grammy nominations. Bridgewater also pursued a parallel career in musical theater, winning a Tony Award for her role as Glinda in The Wiz in 1975. Having recently completed a run as the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day, her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies, Black Ballad, Carmen, Cabaret and the OffBroadway and West End Productions of Lady Day, for which Bridgewater received the British Laurence Olivier

As a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Bridgewater continues to appeal for international solidarity to finance global grassroots projects in the fight against world hunger. She spent the last year on an extensive global tour in support of “Dee Dee’s Feathers” and was recently honored with a stage dedication in her name at the new People’s Health New Orleans Jazz Market. Bridgewater was the recipient of an NEA Jazz Masters Fellows Award with honors, bestowed to her at the Kennedy Center in April 2017.
“These were the songs I listened to on the famous Black radio station WDIA, where my own father, Matthew Garrett, was a young on-air DJ with the moniker ‘Matt the Platter Cat.’ I was born in Memphis but my family migrated north to Flint, Michigan, when I was 3 years old. The South has always remained buried inside me, and coming back for this recording project has brought me full circle in my life.” —DeeDee Bridgewater

Putting the “Mock” in Democracy
Saturday, March 28 8:00 p.m.
When it comes to political theater, Washington, D.C. offers a rich, inexhaustible vein that the Capitol Steps have been spinning into song parodies and sketch comedy gold for audiences across the U.S. for close to 40 years. Putting the “mock” in democracy since 1981, the Capitol Steps return to the Rialto Center with a brand-new show. Tastefully lampooning politicians, Beltway happenings, and the day’s headlines, the Capitol Steps shows are constantly changing and strenuously bi-partisan. All points on the political spectrum are welcomed and dutifully skewered. The group was started in 1981 by Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss, and Jim Aidala, staff members for Illinois Republican senator Charles Percy. They figured that if the newly elected President, Ronald Reagan, could be a politician, they, political operatives, were permitted to be entertainers. Born as a playful intra-party jab, the three Senate staffers

created satiric song parodies and comedy sketches that quickly proved be as popular in the Rust, Bible, Grain, and Sun Belts as they were inside the Beltway. Across six presidential administrations— no matter which party is in power, which individuals hold office, or who is in the headlines— the Capitol Steps have tackled both sides of the political aisle with equal pizazz, punch, and playfulness. The Capitol Steps offer audiences two assurances: everyone’s politics will get spoofed and everybody’ll leave laughing.
Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums, including their latest, “The Lyin’ Kings.” They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

SUSANNAH
By Carlisle Floyd Georgia State University Opera Theatre Director: Carroll Freeman
Friday & Saturday, April 10 & 11 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 12 3:00 p.m.
Written by Carlisle Floyd during the McCarthy era, Susannah is loosely based on the Apocryphal tale of Susannah and the Elders. The two-act opera focuses on 18-year-old Susannah Polk, an innocent girl who is targeted as a sinner in the small mountain town of New Hope Valley, Tennessee. The music is largely characterized by Appalachian folk melodies. The opera includes some Protestant hymns and some traditional classical music. Susannah is one of the most performed American operas, second only to Porgy and Bess.

EVA AYLLÓN
Queen of Afro-Peruvian Soul
Saturday, April 25 | 8 p.m. The Rialto proudly presents Peru’s most celebrated musical artist, Eva Ayllón, hailed as the “Queen of Afro-Peruvian Soul.” Also dubbed the “Tina Turner of Afro-Peruvian music” by the Los Angeles Times, Ayllón’s repertoire ranges from the romantic Spanish songs known as “valses” of coastal Peru to the distinctive rhythms brought by African slaves: the sensual lando, the throbbing festejo, and the bawdy, insouciant alcatraz. Recognized as the leading exponent of Afro-Peruvian music, Ayllón has 4 platinum records, 10 gold records, and two Latin Grammy nominations for “Eva! Leyenda Peruana” (Eva! Peruvian Legend) and “To My Country,” an album she recorded with Los Hijos del Sol and Alex Acuña. Since moving to the U.S., Ayllón has broadened her repertoire and increased her already impressive versatility with respect to style. Ayllón continues on her journey to connect her music with the sounds of her multiethnic heritage.

Frank & Llen Ryan Marietta, Georgia
FRANK&LLENCARE You know the “in sickness and in health” marriage vow? In 53 years, Frank and Llen Ryan have really put it to the test. Heart issues, skin cancer, prostate cancer, debilitating back pain — they’ve faced it all together. And with Wellstar’s expert care, things have come out “for better” — not worse. These days, Llen gardens and walks daily, thanks to a successful spine surgery. And Frank fights back against Parkinson’s with the help of our special boxing classes, prescribed by his Wellstar neurologist. No two happily married couples are exactly alike, and at Wellstar, we would never treat them that way.
