or more than forty years, Ailey II has merged the spirit and energy of the country’s best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers. Started in 1974, Ailey II embodies Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. Mr. Ailey personally selected the veteran dancer Sylvia Waters to lead this junior company, and as its Artistic Director for 38 years, she developed Ailey II into one of America’s most popular dance

n July 1, 2012, Troy Powell became only the second person to lead Ailey II in its 44-year history. The native New Yorker began his dance training at age 9 as a scholarship student at The Ailey School. After graduating from the High School of Performing Arts, he joined Ailey II and, in 1991, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He toured the United States, South America, Europe and South Africa for 10 years with the company, before becoming a master teacher at The Ailey School and resident choreographer of Ailey II. Powell has choreographed ballets for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, The Ailey School, Dallas Black Dance Theater, the National Dance Company of the Bahamas and Alaska Dance Theater, as well as three episodes of “Sesame Street.” His guest artist credits include performances with such companies as Batsheva, Dallas Black Dance Theater and Complexions. He has been featured in an American Express commercial with the Ailey company and has appeared on television in George C. Wolfe’s The Colored Museum, the “Great Performances: Dance in America” special “A Hymn for Alvin Ailey” (choreographed by Judith Jamison), “America’s Next Top Model” and, most recently, the Polish version of “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Youssou NDOUR | 7 pm | Oct. 28
olling Stone magazine characterized Youssou NDOUR’s voice as being “so extraordinary that the history of Africa seems locked inside it.” NDOUR’s music is an exciting synthesis of musical languages. The Grammy Award-winning vocalist is known for a sound that is uniquely Senegalese as well as outward-looking and genre-defying. NDOUR was born in a working-class
neighborhood in the capital city of Dakar and began performing at age 12. A few years later he started his own band, Étolie de Dakar, and collected fans drawn to his fusion of musical traditions and powerhouse vocals. The New York Times called it “an arresting tenor, a supple weapon deployed with prophetic authority.” NDOUR displayed the traits that would become his hallmarks: daring and innovation

with the United Nations and UNICEF. In 2000, he was nominated as a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador and, in 2007, was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. NDOUR’s leadership and advocacy have been instrumental in bringing internet access to Senegal and the African continent. In 2012, he was appointed Senegal’s Minister of Culture and Tourism and served as a minister adviser to the president. In his 30-plus years as a recording artist, NDOUR has attracted scores of fans, admirers and musical collaborators. He is, wrote recording artist Peter Gabriel, “a source of inspiration to me not just as a musician but as a person.”
with roots in traditional music and griot storytelling. His first album, 1984’s Immigrés, established him as a humanitarian champion. “I’ve always used my songs to put across messages,” he said recently. NDOUR organized a 1985 concert to support the release from prison of South African anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela and has worked extensively with Amnesty International. éla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer are genre-bending masters on their respective instruments. When they take the stage together, they’re apt to traverse every geographic and stylistic corner of the globe, from classical to bluegrass to world music. Their special guest, Rakesh Chaurasia, is a young master of the bansuri, the wooden flute of India. Béla Fleck: The New York City-born, Nashville-based artist is widely considered the world’s premier banjo player. He’s been nominated in more categories than any instrumentalist in Grammy Award history and has taken home 15 golden gramophones. Zakir Hussain: The international world music phenomenon is considered a national treasure in his native India. A virtuoso classical tabla player, his hallmark is his uncanny intuition and masterful improvisation. Edgar Meyer: The double bassist combines technique and musicianship and has a gift for composition. This combination earned him a MacArthur Award in 2002. These maestros are among the most prolific creators and composers in all of music. They first teamed up in 2009 to record the album The Melody of Rhythm and delighted fans while touring the world to support it. Together now for more performances, Fleck, Hussain and Meyer, along with Chaurasia, continue to create a musical alchemy that NPR — borrowing from the great Duke Ellington — called “beyond category.”

Aida Cuevas: Tribute to Juan Gabriel | 8 pm | Nov. 10
Aida Cuevas: Totalmente Juan Gabriel Gabriel Vol. II, the follow-up to 2013’s first installment. Gabriel and Cuevas began their professional collaboration in the 1980s when he produced two of her albums — 1983’s Aida Cuevas Canta a Juan Gabriel and 1985’s Exitos. Cuevas is revered in Mexico and among fans worldwide for her devotion to traditional mariachi music and her mastery of its demanding vocals. In 2016, The Kansas City Star said she “is to Mexico what Aretha Franklin is to the United States.”

n her 42-year career, Aida Cuevas has amassed a body of work, fan base and enough accolades to warrant her title as “The Queen of Mariachi.” A legend in traditional Mexican music, she owns a Latin Grammy Award and seven Latin Grammy nominations. She made history this year by becoming the first female singer to win a Latin Grammy for mariachi. On this tour, Cuevas and her Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán band pay tribute to her close friend and mentor, Juan Gabriel, one of the most-beloved and best-selling Latin American singer-songwriters in history. This tour comes with Cuevas in the midst of recording five albums of Gabriel songs, spanning the breadth his career. Last year she released the second volume, Totalmente Juan
Aida Cuevas is the only artist authorized by the Juan Gabriel estate to record and tour his music. Cuevas is a master of the mariachi art song performing a full range of mariachi numbers, including the falsetto heavyweight “El Pastor,” the iconic Juan Gabriel hits “Te Doy Las Gracias,” “Te Vas a Quedar Con Las Ganas” and “Quizás Mañana,” as well as new songs from Totalmente Juan Gabriel Vol. II, including “Gracias Por Todo,” “Cada Vez,” “Cada Vez” and “Buscando el Séptimo Amor.” Cuevas also performs many ranchero classics such as “Traición a Juan,” and the José Alfredo Jiménez compositions “Me Equivoque Contigo” and “No Me Amenaces.” Her unique voice and style have allowed her to cultivate a successful career spanning decades, leaving a remarkable imprint in the history of Mexican music.
