War Horse magically delivers an equine’s-eye view of World War I By Curt Holman
S
tephen Spielberg’s film adaptation of the stage play War Horse opened at Christmas 2011 and went on to earn six Academy Award nominations. The stage play, which premiered in London in 2007, used an elaborate puppet to represent Joey, a horse who experiences the trials and tribulations of World War I. With a $66 million budget, Spielberg put puppets aside and placed live animals on spectacular landscapes, putting his War Horse in the tradition of such equine entertainments as The Black Stallion. Comparing a flesh-and-blood Joey on-screen with a cane-and-metal construction onstage might seem like no contest at all. Not true. Seen live, Joey the puppet is somehow more realistic than a real horse. The Center for Puppetry Arts’ Jon Ludwig says his peers nicknamed Joey “The Marlon Brando of puppets,” and not since Julie Taymor’s The Lion King has stage puppetry so seized the public imagination. The size of a real horse, the puppet has an aluminum chassis and visible frame, giving it something of a steampunk look. Within minutes of seeing Joey twitching his ears and shaking his mane, all artifice vanishes. He becomes an actual horse half-trained and a little “tetchy.” War Horse originated with directors Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris of England’s Royal National Theatre, who

The two performers inside Joey’s frame never evoke the kind of vaudeville-era pantomime horse that is rone to pratfalls and dance steps. Joey more closely evokes the stripped-down, symbolic presentation of Equus (at Actor’s Express in the spring), in which actors wear stylized masks and convey the idea of horses more than attempting a literal imitation. The winner of four Tony Awards, War Horse impressively replicates a horse’s movements, from playful little flicks of his tail to rearing majestically on his rear legs. As much as you can admire the beauty of movie horses, the play connects you directly to Joey’s emotional life. Curt Holman writes about arts and entertainment for Creative Loafing, Atlanta magazine, ArtsATL.com, Paste and Encore Atlanta. He has won awards for critical writing and, in 2005, was a National Endowment for the Arts fellow in theater/ musical theater.

sought a collaborative project with the stunningly inventive Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa. Morris’ mother recommended a 1982 children’s novel by Michael Mopurgo called War Horse. The author uses the first-person narration of an English farm horse purchased by the cavalry to depict the horrors of World War I. With the opening lines, “My earliest memories are a confusion of hilly fields and dark, damp stables…,” Joey offers an objective viewpoint on the Great War from the English, French, German and animal perspectives. Joey requires the close, collaborative work of three puppeteers, each with a specific position and nickname. “The Head” stands outside the horse with hand on his bridle and controls Joey’s eye-line and overall attentiveness. “The Heart,” standing inside the frame at the front legs, conveys the horse’s breath and overall weight and power. “The Hind,” in the back legs, takes charge of the tail and directs the gait of the horse, from walk to trot to gallop. Actor Tim Lewis said that the National considered putting a skin over Joey’s frame, but “technically that doesn’t work, because the puppeteers inside couldn’t see out, which would be dangerous.” The Heart and Hind not only have to support the 100-pound frame, but occasionally the weight of actors like 160-pound Lewis, who rides Joey at times. “By the end of the show,” says actor/puppeteer Ian Piers, “you’re dripping with sweat and crying in the shower. It’s a crazy job. I never thought I’d be playing the hind of a horse.”

The timeless classic that almost never happened When The King and I opened on Broadway in 1951, Yul Brynner’s Siamese monarch wasn’t even a leading character. Although his role was sizable, it was considered a featured part (aka second banana), with billing below the title. That’s the last time that happened.
M
uch has changed since that March night in 1951, and not only the King’s star status. The term “Oriental,” widely used then to describe all things (and people) Asian, is no longer polite. Neither is Siam or Siamese. And Caucasian actors made up with dark pigments and slanted eyes have, thankfully, given way to actual Asian actors, as is the case in this Theater of the Stars staging, cast largely in New York. The fact that The King and I was almost never created is but one part of its lore. It seems that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II weren’t keen on

the project, suggested to them (reports vary) by their wives and/or Broadway star Mary Martin, English stage actress Gertrude Lawrence and/or Lawrence’s agent. They’d already proven themselves musical theater pioneers with Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945) and South Pacific (1949), and neither wanted to do a star vehicle. (The King and I was pitched to them as a crowning achievement for the aging Lawrence.) And they didn’t think Margaret Landon’s bestseller Anna and the King of Siam had musical potential. Dear Patrons, Subscribers and Friends: Welcome to the third show of our 60th Season at of the Stars, The King and I!
CHRISTOPHER B. MANOS Producer MANOS Theater NICHOLAS F.President
The King and I has captured the hearts and minds of millions with its charming story of the British governess brought into the court of Siam to tutor the King’s many children. This unique love story is told with one of the most glorious and unforgettable scores ever written. The King And I has always been a favorite of mine and I am thrilled to work with Broadway legend, Baayork Lee, as our director and the extremely talented, Susan Kikuchi as our choreographer. I am also pleased to have Ronobir Lahiri playing The King and the effervescent Victoria Mallory as our Anna Leonowens. In addition to a wonderful professional cast, we also have a very talented group of local Atlanta children who will grace our stage. I always enjoy the dynamic of having local children perform on the Fox stage. It is a memory they will never forget. Once again, thank you for being a part of our family and supporting Theater of the Stars. We are looking forward to our next produced show, The Producers, which was re-scheduled to Friday January 25 – Wednesday January 30, 2013. Our final 2012 season show is Mary Poppins (April 2 – 7, 2013). We will also offer a special extra that is not a part of the season package, Blue Man Group. We look forward to the show returning to the Fox from January 15 – 20, 2013. If you are not a Subscriber or member of Theater of the Stars and would like to become one, I would like to take this time to invite you to join our Family for the 2012 Season. Authors
RICHARD RODGERS (Music) began his professional career in 1920 with a series of musicals for Broadway, London and Hollywood written with lyricist Lorenz Hart. Among their greatest: On Your Toes (1936), Babes in Arms (1937), The Boys From Syracuse (1938), and Pal Joey (1940). The Rodgers and Hart partnership came to an end with the death of Lorenz Hart in 1943, at the age of 48. Earlier that year Rodgers had joined forces with lyricist and author Oscar Hammerstein II, whose work in the field of operetta throughout the 1920s and 1930s had been as innovative as Rodgers’ own accomplishments in the field of musical comedy. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, representing a unique fusion of Rodgers’ musical comedy and Hammerstein’s operetta. It also marked the beginning of the most successful partnership in Broadway musical history, and was followed by Carousel (1945), Allegro (1947), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Me and Juliet (1953), Pipe Dream (1955), Flower Drum Song (1958) and The Sound of Music (1959). The team wrote one movie musical, State Fair (1945; adapted to the stage in 1995), and one for television, Cinderella (1957; remade in 1965 and 1997). Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals earned 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes and two Grammy Awards. In 1998 Rodgers & Hammerstein were cited by Time magazine and CBS News as among the 20 most influential artists of the 20th century and, in 1999, they were jointly commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp. Despite Hammerstein’s death in 1960, Rodgers continued to write for the Broadway stage. His first solo entry, No Strings in 1962, earned him two Tony Awards for music and lyrics, and was followed by Do I Hear a

bios Waltz? (1965, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), Two By Two (1970, lyrics by Martin Charnin), Rex (1976, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick) and I Remember Mama (1979, lyrics by Martin Charnin and Raymond Jessel). Richard Rodgers died at home in New York City on Dec. 30, 1979, at the age of 77. On March 27, 1990, he was honored posthumously with Broadway’s highest accolade when the 46th Street Theatre, owned and operated by the Nederlander Organization, was renamed the Richard Rodgers Theatre, home to the Richard Rodgers Gallery, which honors the composer’s life and works. OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN, II (Book and Lyrics) started writing lyrics for the Columbia University varsity shows while studying law. His earliest works included musical comedies written with a Columbia undergraduate seven years his junior named Richard Rodgers. (The 1920 varsity show, Fly With Me, was composed by Rodgers with lyrics by both Hammerstein and a fellow classmate of his named Lorenz Hart.) Withdrawing from Columbia Law School after his second year to pursue a career in theatre, Hammerstein took a job with his uncle as an assistant stage manager. In 1919 Hammerstein’s first play, The Light, was produced by his Uncle Arthur; it lasted four performances. Undaunted, he continued to write both lyrics and librettos, principally with Otto Harbach as his collaborating author. His first success, with Harbach, Vincent Youmans and Herbert Stothart, was Wildflower in 1923. Hammerstein found his niche with some of the greatest composers of his day, breathing new life into the moribund art form of operetta with such classics as Rose-Marie (music by Rudolf Friml), The Desert Song (Sigmund Romberg), The New Moon (Romberg), and Song of the Flame (George Gershwin). With Jerome Kern, Hammerstein wrote eight musicals, including Sweet Adeline, Music in the Air and their masterwork, Show Boat. His last musical before embarking on an exclusive partnership with Richard Rodgers was Carmen Jones, the highly acclaimed 1943 allblack revision of Georges Bizet’s tragic opera Carmen. During the years that Hammerstein 30 EncoreAtlantA.com
was redefining the terms of operetta, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were challenging the accepted norms of musical comedy with shows that set new standards for wit, sophistication and innovation. The Rodgers & Hammerstein partnership began with Oklahoma! (1943). Like Hammerstein’s Show Boat and Rodgers & Hart’s Pal Joey, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical was a milestone, blending musical comedy and operetta into a whole new genre -the musical play. Oklahoma! was also the start of the most successful partnership in Broadway history and was followed by Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote one musical specifically for the big screen – State Fair -- and one for television -- Cinderella. Collectively, their musicals earned 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes and two Grammy Awards. Oscar Hammerstein II received many personal honors and awards including five honorary degrees, two Pulitzer Prizes, two Academy Awards and five Tony Awards. His last musical was The Sound of Music written with Richard Rodgers in 1959; his last song was “Edelweiss,” written for that musical during its Boston tryout. Oscar Hammerstein II died at his farm in Doylestown, Penn., on the morning of Aug. 23, 1960.

etiquette 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

reaction to the project wrong in the most glorious way — peppering their tale of politics, passions and personalities with “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “We Kiss in a Shadow,” “Shall We Dance,” “The March of the Siamese Children,” and the peerless “Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet, choreographed by Jerome Robbins, another musical theater genius. With its gorgeous score and indelible characters, it’s sometimes easy to overlook the politics and morality woven into the story. “The King and I is romantic, cleareyed and highly moral,” critic Vincent Canby wrote in The New York Times when the 1996 Broadway revival opened. “Though ever-optimistic, it doesn’t deny intimations of darkness; it successfully absorbs them.” Hindsight is a beautiful thing. Both Rodgers and Hammerstein worried that the show would flop. Its first performance, out of town in New Haven, Conn., ran four hours. Some backers recommended shutting it down right then, but R&H went back to work. “Getting to Know You”and “I Have Dreamed” were written during the Boston tryout, and still Hammerstein

They saw the 1946 movie Anna and the King of Siam with Irene Dunne and Rex Harrison. And they began seeing a musical. What resulted is a spectacular landmark in American theater, one that is just as vibrant, exotic and timeless today as it was 61 years ago, with its unconventional love story and political backdrop. “There is something about the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein that speak to each successive generation,” Ted Chapin, president of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization has said. “The R&H musicals are about people, and people don’t actually change as much as some might think. Our foibles, our hopes, our fears, our concerns, our points of view, our vulnerabilities are all somehow examined. ... And this was never more true than in The King and I.” TOTS Producer Christopher B. Manos puts it more simply, “Even if you took all the music out of The King and I, it would still hold up as a play.” Luckily, we don’t have to. Rodgers and Hammerstein proved their first

remained distressed. Most people were not concerned about whether the show was good, he complained, but whether it was better than South Pacific. “It is a very strange play,” he said, “and must be accepted on its own terms.” The King and I received positive, but not ecstatic, notices. Critical appreciation seemed to grow with second or third viewings, and the show built momentum as the run continued. It won five Tony awards — best musical, best actress for Lawrence, best featured actor for Brynner, scenic design and costume design, and has been a staple on professional stages and in high schools and colleges ever since. “The King and I might well be the ‘other’ R&H masterpiece,” wrote noted theater
scholar Ethan Mordden in his 1992 book Rodgers and Hammerstein, “as fulfilled a composition as Carousel, less experimental but more tightly built. Of the Big 5 — the musicals that chart the first eight years of the team’s 16-year partnership — Oklahoma! is the exuberant groundbreaker, Carousel the showpiece, Allegro the marvelous failure and South Pacific the brooding treat, so mournful yet so elated. But The King and I, for all the difficulty R&H had in writing it, is the work that perfects their revolution.” Kathy Janich is Encore Atlanta’s managing editor. Her love affair with theater began at age 6, when she played one of the King’s children in a high school production of “The King and I.”
More lore, if you please • The original King and I in 1951 cost $360,000, twice what other musicals cost at that time. The 1996 Broadway revival with Donna Murphy and Lou Diamond Phillips, by contrast, was budgeted at $2.24 million. • Baayork Lee, who directs this TOTS staging, appeared in the original Broadway cast as Princess Yaowlak, one of the King’s children. • Yul Brynner was not the creative team’s first choice to play the King. Rex Harrison, Alfred Drake (the original Curly in Oklahoma!) and 54 EncoreAtlantA.com
Noel Coward turned it down. Others considered were film and stage actor Jose Ferrer, Ezio Pinza (South Pacific’s Emile de Becque) and Macdonald Carey (known today for his work as patriarch Dr. Tom Horton on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” • “Getting to Know You” was written while the show tried out in Boston. The tune came via Broadway star Mary Martin (South Pacific), who suggested the team repurpose a softshoe number that had been cut from her show.

Beyond Elmo Meet 2 Atlanta puppeteers who know just how to pull the strings By Laura Raines

Puppets, which have always had a niche in Atlanta theater, are in the spotlight again nationally and internationally. Atlanta puppeteer Jon Ludwig remembers seeing War Horse in London. “At a critical scene, adults in 56 EncoreAtlantA.com
the audience were sobbing and yelling ‘No!’,” says Ludwig, artistic director at Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts. “The horse captures your imagination. You know it’s not a real horse, but it has heart and character.”

irst there was “Sesame Street” and the “The Muppet Show.” Then came Broadway productions like The Lion King and Avenue Q. Now we have War Horse, a drama in which the title character is a full-scale, galloping, equine puppet named Joey.

workroom, has produced fairy tales and children’s educational theater focused on themes like space, dinosaurs, recycling and the rain forests since 1978. But it also does adult productions like The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe, Frankenstein and Gilgamesh. And it’s not the only game in town. As many as 60 artists focus on work with puppets in metro Atlanta. “Puppetry is a small, fun world that is always moving forward,” says Michael Haverty, whose credits include associate artistic director at the Center and at 7 Stages as well as creator of Haverty’s Marionettes and The Object Group. “Puppeteers,” he says, “are excited to exchange ideas, and that makes us all better.” Haverty loves that puppetry combines all the arts – visual art, dance, music and acting, with tremendous technical knowledge and physical stamina. “Puppeteers have to be able to speak and sing while scrunched over on little stools behind the set, or while leaning over a marionette bridge manipulating the weight of puppets 16 feet below. I love the challenge of that.” He started his career as a playwright but tired of waiting for producers and actors to bring his work to life. “In the puppetry arts, I discovered I could build my own actors and set, and use everything I’ve ever learned about theater. It’s become a passion.” A puppet production starts with an idea — a new story or an adaptation of a literary work. “The first question

That puppeteers could create such a creature didn’t surprise him. “In the puppetry world, there just aren’t that many people who say, ‘You can’t do that.’ You get to create your own world. You can push the limits. That’s what attracted me to the art form.” The Center, where Ludwig creates stories and creatures from a basement
is, why puppets? How could puppetry make this better?” Haverty says. He thought hand-carved wooden puppets could represent the phantasmagorical qualities of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, for example, better than real actors when Haverty Marionettes took on the project. Once you’ve said ‘yes’ to puppets, you must decide what kind,” he says. There are marionettes, hand, rod, shadow, toy and body puppets. Each has unique properties. “Marionettes are better at dancing and flying but not good at fighting. Shadow puppets are great when you want to portray something absolutely ridiculous, like a giant squid attacking a boat.” The scriptwriting, puppet making, set building, music, choreography and technical details require the collaboration of many artists. It can take a year or more to get to rehearsals — and the changes that come with 60 EncoreAtlantA.com
them. “Puppets never move exactly as expected, and they often do more than you thought they could,” Haverty says. “The puppet is a dead thing that must be brought to life,” Ludwig says. “The puppeteer uses manipulation, gesture, body language and voice to give it breath and character. The greatest challenge is to give it heart. If the audience doesn’t care about the character, then what’s the point?” If a puppet has character, say Kermit or Joey, then the audience will fill in the blanks of emotion. “The audience is the last member of the puppet company,” Ludwig says. “You invite them to join in and do their part. When they connect and believe and the puppet begins to respond to them — it’s an incredible moment.” Laura Raines is an Atlanta freelance writer who specializes in writing about health care, education, business and the arts.
