Once upon a time there was a ferocious ogre who terrorized all who crossed his swampy path! NOT! Which is not to say that Shrek does not have some scary qualities — his name is derived from the German word schreck, which means fear and terror. But when you get to know him, and we get to know him pretty quickly, he is no scarier than anyone else dealing with self-image challenges. Of course he doesn’t think he has any self-image challenges, but that does not make him very different from a lot of other folks either. However, he IS large and green … and he bellows … and sometimes others run away or scream when they encounter him. Once there was a beautiful fragile princess trapped in a tower who patiently waited for her prince charming to come to her rescue! NOT! Which is not to say that Fiona is not waiting in her tower, but she does not seem particularly patient, and she is certainly not fragile. However, she DOES have an image to live up to and a dark secret to hide. Then there is a prince who is not very charming, a talking donkey who is not very magical — but is a lot of fun — a dragon with extra-long eyelashes and a whole parcel of fairy tale characters who are mightily perturbed about being kicked out of their homes. So — what happens in the story of Shrek? Everything that is typically known about fairy tales is overturned, and everything we think we know about others and ourselves is challenged. Because no one is the “typical” child, parent, teacher, friend, etc. We all are like onions with many layers — some not so fragrant and some maybe freaky. There even may be some hidden secrets, but in the end can we recognize, and perhaps celebrate, all those layers of onion? Enjoy the ride and remember that “love can conquer all,” but sometimes we have to really get out of the outhouse and search for it! Blessings,

Rosemary

Pairing Pupils and Professionals

Dramaturgy by students: Acquiring skills for lifelong impact By Nik Philmon It’s Dec. 19, and 10 third-grade students at Clairemont Elementary are excitedly anticipating the arrival of Rosemary Newcott. They are familiar with her work and are BIG fans. Students remark, “She was the director of the plays that we saw at the Alliance Theatre when we were younger, like Wizard of Oz, Charlotte’s Web and Honk! She was so creative in how she directed those shows, like how they created the tornado in The Wizard of Oz and how the feather fell from the ceiling in Honk!” For the past three years, Ms. Newcott has joined our class as a part of the Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists project called Dramaturgy by Students. The real-world program

pairs an Alliance Theatre teaching artist with a classroom teacher and students to become dramaturgs for an actual production. According to Celise Kalke, director of new projects and literary manager at the Alliance Theatre, “Dramaturgy represents the research and development arm of theatre, as well as the intellectual activity around any given production or theatrical work.” For the past eight years, Kim Bowers-Rheay Baran has worked with Clairemont Elementary in City Schools of Decatur to facilitate students becoming junior dramaturgs. Ms. Baran and Ms. Martin, head of the school’s Links gifted program, collaborated with

bright, young minds to combine their research skills and imagination to prepare an authentic audience of actors to understand the script from a child’s perspective. As the partnership continued, I assumed Ms. Martin’s role at Clairemont and we asked students to expand their participation — first video journaling their process for display in the Alliance lobby, then contributing to the Audience Guide, and even presenting at the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas’ national conference held in Atlanta.

The students cannot master the increasing level of responsibility without more guidance. Ms. Newcott makes it clear that she is visiting to share her directorial expertise and receive student input on the play that is in production. “Stepping into Nik’s classroom at Clairemont is always a pleasant adventure,” she says, “and I ALWAYS learn something, I love to hear their questions and ideas. The students are so authentically excited about the production and it makes me really examine my choices and consider the world of

KIDS’ ART

the play through the eyes of my very discerning audience members.” Ms. Newcott also explained the decision-making that goes into deciding what ideas can and cannot be brought to life. Ms. Newcott and Ms. Baran have an uncanny way of encouraging students’ imaginations while also teaching them to stop and think critically about their choices. That skill will impact the students for a lifetime. From the kids’ point of view: “It was an amazing experience to meet Rosemary Newcott, because we are HER dramaturgs! As dramaturgs we told her about our research on Chinese dragons and showed her our ideas of the Shrek

costume and the edible swamp with chocolate mud. She sat right down on the floor with us and showed us the real sketch of the dragon design. It was so intricate.” The dedication, inspiration and reward this partnership provides is evident in the excitement the kids show when it’s time for their weekly work session and the deliberate detail that makes it into the finished product. I am ridiculously proud of their work and delighted to be a part of Dramaturgy by Students! We look forward to growing together for many years to come. Nik Philmon is an Intervention Teacher for the Gifted at Clairemont Elementary School.

This season marks the inaugural year of the Atlanta Artist’s Lab, a program developed by the Alliance Theatre to provide opportunities to artists of multiple theatre disciplines and practitioners; to allow the Alliance to invest in our local artistic ecology; and to fuel season planning for the Alliance and other area theatres with home grown work with the hope of finding as many producing homes for the work as possible. 2014 ARTIST’S LAB Ellen McQueen Teaming up with consultants James Knowles and Oliver Turner, Ellen McQueen will further develop “The Projects Project,” a theatre piece built from true stories of folks who grew up in the “war zone” of the Atlanta housing projects. Spoken word, visual images, music and dance are all part of telling the tale. Gabrielle Fulton As the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation is upon us, Gabrielle Fulton aims to examine notions of freedom as she develops her play “Uprising,” which reflects on liberty, self-determination, and sacrifice in a free black community during Secession Era America.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre has become the leading theatre of the Southeast, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse audiences. The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Alliance received the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of excellence. The Alliance, known for its artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. It has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act, Come Fly Away, Bring It On and the U.S. premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings. The Alliance nurtures the careers of playwrights through its Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the winner and national networking opportunities for four finalists. The Acting Program and Education Department reach nearly 50,000 students annually through performances, classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include GA Wolf Trap, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K — 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K-12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that this is where great theatre lives. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

KENDEDA TURNS Playwriting competition’s anniversary season spotlights new work from old friends and the latest winner

10

The Alliance Theatre’s Hertz Stage this season has been home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The fourshow lineup has introduced Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America’s brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one. Look for their names at theatres across the country.

Tarell Alvin McCraney

Kenneth Lin

This lineup celebrates a milestone for the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago. This one-of-a-kind contest helps student playwrights in leading university graduate programs make the move to professional theatre. This year’s winner, Madhuri Shekar, is from the University of Southern California. Her In Love and Warcraft, a piece about dysfunctional love stories fostered through World of Warcraft tactics, just closed. Earlier this season we welcomed back Tarell Alvin McCraney (2008’s In the Red and Brown Water) and Kenneth Lin (2006’s …,” said Said). Just ahead: Meg Miroshnik (2012’s Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls). Miroshnik’s The Tall Girls (March 7-30) is a world premiere set in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, where basketball is sometimes the only way out, even for a girl. When a mysterious young man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear: He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game and he has the only inflated basketball in town. Miroshnik’s play requires actors to shoot and score with no retakes.

Madhuri Shekar

In Choir Boy, McCraney told a coming-of-age story about a charismatic gay boy at an all-boys private prep school for African-Americans; Lin’s political thriller Warrior Class examined the choices of a young AsianAmerican politician on the rise in the Republican Party. Lin, McCraney, Miroshnik and Shekar are among a group of 50 artists who have come through the Kendeda/Alliance competition and remain active, engaged and prolific alumni.

Meg Miroshnik

The remaining roll call of winners features some of the brightest playwrights working today, including Mike Lew (Bike America, 2012-13); David Robinson (Carapace, 2010-11); Ismail Khalidi (Tennis in Nablus, 2009-10); Julia Brownell (Smart Cookie, 2008-09); Darren Canady (False Creeds, 2006-07); Lin; and Daphne Greaves (Day of Kings, 2004-05). The list of non-winning finalists is just as impressive. This anniversary season has also featured readings and workshops by other alumni winners and finalists. Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising and hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at shana.orr@woodruffcenter.org or call 404.733.4761.

Our 2014 guide to elite K-12 education in metro Atlanta

ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

By Danielle Deadwyler

Traditional, new wave, diverse, student-centered, faith-based, college prep, challenging, alternative, Montessori, community, international, competitive. This isn’t a vocabulary list. These are among the terms used by metro schools to attract the attention of parents and their kids. Atlanta’s many private-school options continue to increase, each offering low student-to-teacher ratios, diverse learning environments and “unique” educational practices. We have discovered some new arrivals

to add to the competitive spirit of the Atlanta prep landscape this year.

Baby steps to college prep These schools offer ongoing, congruous environments for students, providing 12 or more grade levels. College prep-based programs can range from faith-based to community-driven, depending on the qualities they seek to engender. Their mission includes preparing children academically and socially for the challenges of a global economy Our lists begin on Page 51. ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

The Woodruff Circle

The Woodruff Arts Center and our four artistic partners – the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences – rely on the generosity of those donors whose support extends to all parts of our organization. The members of The Woodruff Circle each contributed more than $250,000 to our efforts last year. We are deeply grateful to these 34 partners who help to ensure that the arts thrive in our city. $1,000,000+

World-class Cardiac Services Right here in Georgia

Why do people from across the state – and across the nation – come to WellStar Health System for cardiac care and surgery? • Top-Tier 3-Star Rating by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Only the top 13% of hospitals in the nation are awarded this distinction. • WellStar Cobb, Douglas and Kennestone Hospitals are all accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, a recognition for facilities that quickly diagnose cardiac patients, begin treatment within minutes and significantly improve the chance of a positive outcome. • A cardiac surgery program that specializes in innovative, cutting-edge procedures like the minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (WellStar Kennestone Hospital is the first non-academic facility in the state to perform the procedure). • A women’s heart program designed by WellStar’s female cardiologists to address the unique gender-specific cardiac needs of women. • An outpatient hospital-based Heart Failure Clinic where patients can be seen when experiencing heart failure symptoms, potentially avoiding the ER and hospitalization.
