So, I’m a sucker for a dancer. For a person who lives perhaps too often and too deeply in her head, the beautiful abandon of the artist who uses their body to express himself or herself is a thing of wonder. When you couple that abandon with stone-cold artistry, profound passion for the art form and a lifetime of stories, you have the irresistible. You have Maurice Hines. Mr. Hines sent me an email a ways back — written in all caps, a fact that I have come to think of as the only way an artist who lives as large and as deeply as he does could write — asking if the Alliance might be interested in a show he’d developed. That was a pretty glorious email. Because there are few showbiz titans who walk amongst us with the joy, the chops, the stories and the delight that infuse this American tap master. And the opportunity to have him on our stage, coupled with his Diva Orchestra and the jaw-dropping Manzari Brothers, and to share a little time with him, was, again irresistible. Meaning accumulates in a lot of ways. Sometimes we offer it in straight up narratives, sometimes through emotional abstractions and sometimes it washes over us in unexpected ways. Through a song. Through a personal story. Through a blaze of dancing feet. Maurice Hines has brought meaning to theatre, film, dance and music for a lifetime. I’m beyond grateful that he’s sharing that story with us.

Show biz
has its ups and downs — anyone in the game will tell you that. When the high points hit, there’s nothing quite like it. When times are tough, well, there’s always Judy Garland singing “Forget your troubles, come on get happy.” Showman Maurice Hines has always had his own way of handling things when the chips were down. “Just put on my tap shoes, baby, and start moving. It’s always been the way to pick yourself up. When someone asks you how things are going, no matter how they’re going you just smile and tell them, ‘Well, you know, I’m just tappin’ through life!’ ” Things seem to be going fine for Hines, now 70. He’s been performing since age 7 as one of the Hines Kids alongside little brother, Gregory. The dance moves, the stories, the heartaches, the joys and the favorite melodies are all on display in his highly personal show. Several years ago, Hines recalls, he came across a magazine article that he described as “a retrospective on tap itself.” He read the piece, then read it again to be sure he was correct: It made no mention of his late brother. “I thought to myself, I cannot let this go. The more I thought about it, the more upset I became. I knew I wanted to do something to honor my brother and his huge talent and contribution.” (Gregory Hines, a Tony Award winner
for Jelly’s Last Jam, was an important advocate for tap and the founder of National Tap Dance Day. He died of liver cancer in 2003 at age 57.) “Doing this show keeps my brother with me,” Maurice says quietly. “You’ll see it, too. He will be with me.” While creating Tappin’ Thru Life with director Jeff Calhoun, Hines realized his show also would be a love letter to his mother, Alma. “Without her, nothing would have ever been possible. She was our greatest supporter, and she kept us all together.” At one point in the show, Hines croons “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” to an image of his mother. His father, Maurice Sr., sang the song to her on their first date in 1942. Tappin’ Thru Life is a journey down Maurice Hines’ memory lane. You’ll learn about some of the legends with whom the Hines brothers worked: Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra. The list goes on and on. “When you meet Frank and Judy and Lena and you actually work with them,” he says, “you get to know them in a very special way and you come to appreciate their stunning talent. All of them, just spectacular talents who deserved to be the legends that they are.” ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

“And Sammy Davis Jr.? Don’t get me started! When we were with Sammy, I mean, you got nothing to say because you know nothing! We listened and we watched and we learned from Sammy.”
The joke in the Hines family has always been that Maurice is “out of control!” But in a good way because his audience seems to love it. Alma used to say so; Maurice still hears it from Gregory’s son, Zach.
He recalls hanging out with Ella Fitzgerald in her Las Vegas dressing room, too. “It was back when rock stars were starting to do more with pyrotechnics,” he says. “I said something to Ella about why she might want to put some pyrotechnics in her show. Ella said to me, ‘Boy, I got all the pyrotechnics I need right here in this throat of mine!’”
The creator of Tappin’ Thru Life gives his all or nothing at all.
“Lena told me to always make it real, and to love my audience. She was perfection, and she was so right.”

KENDEDA TURNS Anniversary season featured new plays from old friends and 2014’s winner
10
The Alliance Theatre’s Hertz Stage this season has been home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The four-show lineup introduced Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America’s brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one.
Tarell Alvin McCraney
The lineup celebrated a milestone for the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago. This one-of-a-kind contest helps student playwrights in leading graduate programs make the transition to professional theatre. The most recent winner, Madhuri Shekar, came from the University of Southern California. We’ve also welcomed back Tarell Alvin McCraney (In the Red and Brown Water, 2008), Kenneth Lin (…,” said Said, 2006), and Meg Miroshnik (The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, 2012).
Kenneth Lin
Madhuri Shekar
Meg Miroshnik
McCraney’s Choir Boy was a coming-of-age story about a charismatic gay boy at an all-boys private prep school for African-Americans (touted by critics as one of the Atlanta season’s best). Lin’s political thriller Warrior Class was about an Asian-American on the rise in the Republican Party. Miroshnik’s The Tall Girls was a world premiere set in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The story: Sometimes basketball is the only way out, even for a girl. When a mysterious young man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear: He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game and he has the only inflated basketball in town. These four writers are part of a group of 50 artists to come through the Kendeda/Alliance competition. The roll call of winners features some of the brightest playwrights working today, including (most recent first): Shekar; Mike Lew (Bike America, 2012/13); Miroshnik; David Robinson (Carapace, 2010/11); Ismail Khalidi (Tennis in Nablus, 2009/10); Julia Brownell (Smart Cookie, 2008/09); McCraney; Darren Canady (False Creeds, 2006/07); Lin; and Daphne Greaves (Day of Kings, 2004/05).
This anniversary season also features readings and workshops by other alumni winners and finalists. For details, please email celise.kalke@woodruffcenter.org or check www.alliancetheatre.org.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre has become the leading theatre of the Southeast, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse audiences. The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Alliance received the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of excellence. The Alliance, known for its artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. It has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act, Come Fly Away, Bring It On and the U.S. premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings. The Alliance nurtures the careers of playwrights through its Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the winner and national networking opportunities for four finalists. The Acting Program and Education Department reach nearly 50,000 students annually through performances, classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problemsolving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K — 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K-12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that this is where great theatre lives. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

b a L s t ´ s i t r Atlanta A This season marks the inaugural year of the Atlanta Artists’ Lab, a program developed by the Alliance Theatre to provide opportunities to artists of multiple theatre disciplines and practitioners; to allow the Alliance to invest in our local artistic ecology; and to fuel season planning for the Alliance and other area theatres with home grown work with the hope of finding as many producing homes for the work as possible. 2014 ARTISTS’ LAB Ellen McQueen Teaming up with consultants James Knowles and Oliver Turner, Ellen McQueen will further develop “The Projects Project,” a theatre piece built from true stories of folks who grew up in the “war zone” of the Atlanta housing projects. Spoken word, visual images, music and dance are all part of telling the tale. Gabrielle Fulton As the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation is upon us, Gabrielle Fulton aims to examine notions of freedom as she develops her play “Uprising,” which reflects on liberty, self-determination, and sacrifice in a free black community during Secession Era America.
Brian Kurlander and Lane Carlock In collaboration with directing/ dramturgical consultant Elisa Carlson, Brian Kurlander and Lane Carlock will develop “Moxie.” A moving and powerful play, “Moxie” chronicles a handmade book made by a Marine, who is killed while serving in Afghanistan, as a gift for his son. Journeying from place to place, the book goes on to impact the many lives it touches. Suehyla El-Attar and John Stewart: The 2014 Atlanta Artist Lab Fellows Atlanta artists Suehyla El-Attar, top, and John Stewart, bottom, will collaborate with the Alliance artistic and education staff to both develop their own artistry and to discover new ways of engaging our community. Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising and hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at shana.orr@woodruffcenter.org or call 404.733.4761.

The Woodruff Circle
The Woodruff Arts Center and our four artistic partners – the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences – rely on the generosity of those donors whose support extends to all parts of our organization. The members of The Woodruff Circle each contributed more than $250,000 to our efforts last year.
