It’s a whole new ballgame. The first professional play I ever directed was a piece called Dig, Volley, Spike. It was based on the true story of an amateur women’s volleyball team that won a British championship, and it was staged in a church basement with the audience on bleachers. Through a series of happy accidents, the show ended up transferring to New York, where we played in a theatre complex in the East Village that was also hosting Ben Hur: The Musical. A few years have passed since then. But when Meg Miroshnik, Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition winner and author of the revelatory The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, submitted The Tall Girls for consideration for the tenth anniversary (of the Alliance/Kendeda competition) season, it seemed like not so many years. Here was a piece ostensibly about sports, that was really about identity and hope, how we craft the former in pursuit of the latter. Here, again, was a play about a community of women striving both toward individual sense of self and a collaborative goal. Here was a ballgame. But not only are these radically different plays; they happen in radically different times to radically different people. And I count myself in that last category. Life, if we are lucky, presents us with opportunities to revisit terrain we thought we knew, only to discover how changed we are. T.S. Eliot said it pretty well (no surprise): “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” Thank you, Meg, for a whole new ballgame. Thank you, Alliance audience, for exploring new worlds and known worlds alongside one another.

Hoop Dreams Family photo prompts playwright Meg Miroshnik to take a shot at a women’s basketball drama

Said photograph features her grandfather and the girls’ high school basketball team he coached in 1934 in their home state of Minnesota. The girls are in starched white uniforms; Granddad, then 26, stands tall in a suit. The photograph was a jumpingoff point; The Tall Girls is set in a fictional town called Poor Prairie during the Dust Bowl, not in rural Minnesota and not about her grandfather. That she wants to make clear. Miroshnik’s basketball-play itch gained momentum when she was at the Yale School of Drama, studying with award-winning playwright

Paula Vogel (How I Learned to Drive,The Long Christmas Ride Home). In Miroshnik’s last year of grad school, Vogel designed “custom bakeoffs” – in which students were challenged to write a play in 48 hours based on specific elements. Miroshnik got Title IX sports and Don Juan. Game on. “I wanted to capture what was exciting and alive about a sporting event, the unpredictability, the thrill of not knowing how the game will turn out,” she says. “No matter how much you rehearse, you can’t guarantee, or fake, making a basket. There’s a real adrenaline rush in taking that risk in front of an audience. I knew from the get-go that I would write a scene in which

a character had to make a basket before [the play] could go on.” You’ll see. After Yale, The Tall Girls found development homes at the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference in 2012 and the 2013 DNA series at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. Those opportunities, Miroshnik says, helped ready the play for this world premiere tip-off. It isn’t Miroshnik’s first shot in Atlanta. Alliance audiences met her in the 2011-12 season, when her darkly fanciful play The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls won the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. She’s the last of three Kendedawinning playwrights to return to the Hertz Stage with a new play this season, celebrating the contest’s 10th anniversary. Although the worlds of Fairytale Lives (the enchanted streets and forests of post-Soviet Russia) and The Tall Girls (the American Dust Bowl) are very different, they have common elements. Both are comingof-age stories with a lot of female actors, the playwright says. Both feature characters who find comfort in math and numbers. And both have the word “girls” in their title, which leads to another story. “When I was writing The Tall Girls,” Miroshnik says, “I had given up any hope that Fairytale Lives would ever have a life outside of my desk drawer. A few weeks after I titled The Tall Girls, I got the call from [the Alliance] that Fairytale Lives had won the [Alliance/Kendeda National

Graduate Playwriting Competition]. It’s so wild that these plays have had parallel journeys out in the world.” Out in the world of playwriting, Miroshnik has a specific game plan. “I want to tell stories that can only be told live in a theater, stories that demand distinctly theatrical gestures,” she says. “I try to challenge myself as much as possible to create a way of speaking in each ‘playworld’ that is very different than the last. And I love writing for ensembles of actors. I enjoy creating opportunities for lots of performers to shine. Over the course of a career, I’m interested in making a body of work that will feature a lot of meaty, central roles for women.” Fairytale Lives had a cast of six, The Tall Girls has six. Expect similar numbers in two of her current projects. Old Actress, about two friends who went to drama school together 30 years earlier and then made radically different life choices. And Lady Tattoo, inspired by the early 20th-century tattoo fad that began with carnival workers and made its way to upper-class women. One is about regrets and destiny and second chances, the other about women’s rights to their own bodies, says the Minneapolis-raised, Los Angeles-based playwright. As for her own basketball career? It began and ended quickly. “My high school basketball coach actually suggested that it seemed like this ‘theater stuff’ was working out pretty well for me and that I might want to focus on that instead.” Game over. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York and is a trustee of Denison University. She joined the staff of the Alliance in 2005, and is amazed at the growth of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition and the Atlanta’s audience welcoming response to the writers coming through the program. Managing the many projects in the 10th Anniversary season is a career highlight. Celise has grown the Competition to include collaboration with the Lark Theatre Center in New York, a reading festival in Atlanta, a workshop at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and ongoing new play workshops across the country. The Competition world premieres at the Alliance include these critically acclaimed and exciting productions: Bike America, The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, Carapace, Tennis in Nablus, Smart Cookie, In the Red and Brown Water and False Creeds. Before moving to the Alliance she was the director of the literary department at the Public Theater in New York, working with writers such as John Guare, Diana Son, Tracey Scott Wilson and Stephen Adly Guirgis and serving as the production dramaturg for the Shakespeare in Central Park productions.

JODY FELDMAN (Casting) began her theatre career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the assistant general manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. Jody is the associate producer at the Alliance Theatre, where she started in 1991 as casting director. While at the Alliance, Jody has cast and produced more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions including a wide range of world premieres including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, What I Learned in Paris by Pearl Cleage, Broke by Janece Shaffer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and 10 years of Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition-winning plays, as well as world and regional premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County and, most recently, Zorro. KENDEDA TURNS Anniversary season features new plays from old friends and 2014’s winner

The Alliance Theatre’s Hertz Stage this season is home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The four-show lineup introduces Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America’s brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one.

The lineup celebrates a milestone for the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago. This one-of-a-kind contest helps student playwrights in leading graduate programs make the transition to professional theatre. This year’s winner, Madhuri Shekar, comes from the University of Southern California. And we’ve welcomed back Tarell Alvin McCraney (In the Red and Brown Water, 2008) and Kenneth Lin (…,” said Said, 2006). Next is Meg Miroshnik (The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, 2012).

Audiences have already seen McCraney’s Choir Boy, a coming-of-age story about a charismatic gay boy at an all-boys private prep school for African-Americans (touted by critics as one of the Atlanta season’s best), and Lin’s political thriller Warrior Class, about an Asian-American on the rise in the Republican Party. Miroshnik’s The Tall Girls (March 7-30) is a world premiere set in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The story: Sometimes basketball is the only way out, even for a girl. When a mysterious young man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear: He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game and he has the only inflated basketball in town. These four writers are part of a group of 50 artists to come through the Kendeda/Alliance competition. The roll call of winners features some of the brightest playwrights working today, including (most recent first): Shekar; Mike Lew (Bike America, 2012/13); Miroshnik; David Robinson (Carapace, 2010/11); Ismail Khalidi (Tennis in Nablus, 2009/10); Julia Brownell (Smart Cookie, 2008/09); McCraney; Darren Canady (False Creeds, 2006/07); Lin; and Daphne Greaves (Day of Kings, 2004/05).

This anniversary season also features readings and workshops by other alumni winners and finalists. Experiences have already included an exciting portrait of a drag family hosted by the Jungle, and 570 people sobbing through a mother/daughter reunion in the face of dementia. This season marks the inaugural

year of the Atlanta Artist’s Lab, a program developed by the Alliance Theatre to provide opportunities to artists of multiple theatre disciplines and practitioners; to allow the Alliance to invest in our local artistic ecology; and to fuel season planning for the Alliance and other area theatres with home grown work with the hope of finding as many producing homes for the work as possible. 2014 ARTIST’S LAB Ellen McQueen Teaming up with consultants James Knowles and Oliver Turner, Ellen McQueen will further develop “The Projects Project,” a theatre piece built from true stories of folks who grew up in the “war zone” of the Atlanta housing projects. Spoken word, visual images, music and dance are all part of telling the tale. Gabrielle Fulton As the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation is upon us, Gabrielle Fulton aims to examine notions of freedom as she develops her play “Uprising,” which reflects on liberty, self-determination, and sacrifice in a free black community during Secession Era America.

Brian Kurlander and Lane Carlock In collaboration with directing/ dramturgical consultant Elisa Carlson, Brian Kurlander and Lane Carlock will develop “Moxie.” A moving and powerful play, “Moxie” chronicles a handmade book made by a Marine, who is killed while serving in Afghanistan, as a gift for his son. Journeying from place to place, the book goes on to impact the many lives it touches. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problemsolving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. Our interest in sports -- the rivalries and the athletes themselves – is perhaps driven in part by the parallels with challenges and successes in our own lives. The intersection of on-court drama and real-life drama that each player brings to the game results in an unpredictable and real experience, and one that is shared by players and observers alike. SYNOPSIS Welcome to Poor Prairie, the dusty, desolate town where fifteen-anda-half-year-old Jean has been exiled as caretaker for her wild-child cousin, Almeda. It’s a grim, dangerous place to eke out an existence as a teenage girl — until a handsome man with a past arrives, a brandnew basketball in tow. As the town’s girls come together to form a team set on making it out of Poor Prairie, a murky committee of townspeople threatens to stamp out girls’ sports altogether. Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising and hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps.
