IN JANUARY 2011, following the lead of Tunisia, Egyptians took to the streets and

launched a revolution that swept throughout the region. A few months later, another series of protests rocked Europe, from Greece to the UK. Two common frustrations emerged from these protests in very different regions of the world: a lack of jobs and a lack of hope. Endeavor can help with both of these needs. In many ways, the Middle East landscape reminds me of what Endeavor found in Latin America 15 years ago. High-impact entrepreneurs exist; they are poised to offer the high wage jobs that are key to long-term growth; but they still need support, mentorship, and help forming strong local and global networks. Most important, they need home-grown role models to convince them that entrepreneurship is a viable option. Endeavor has been providing that support, building those networks, and cultivating those role models since 1997. Now we are stepping up our expansion. Endeavor began the year by launching a new country affiliate in Lebanon. Endeavor Jordan hosted its second International Selection Panel in October 2011. And in the midst of Egypt’s revolution, Khaled Ismail — the very first Endeavor Entrepreneur selected in the Middle East — sold his company SySDSoft to Intel. Khaled then took over the role of board chairman of Endeavor Egypt, helping to foster the next generation of big dreamers and doers. Meanwhile, we’ve been fine-tuning what we call the “Endeavor Experience” for all of our high-impact entrepreneurs around the globe. With help from Bain & Company, we’re standardizing best practices at every step, from the moment an entrepreneur enters the selection process through the time she or he receives services and then gives back to sustain Endeavor for future generations.

Since 1997, Endeavor has screened 28,000 candidates, and selected just over 600 men and women from 385 companies. Our high-impact entrepreneurs have created over 150,000 jobs and generated $4.5 billion in 2010; Endeavor offices around the world are working with governments, universities and media to create cultures that encourage entrepreneurship. You can learn more about these inspiring entrepreneurs, their amazing companies and the incredible impact they have created in this year’s report, as well as on www.endeavor.org. In the last year, we all felt the desire for dignity and change from Tahrir Square to the streets of London. As Endeavor selects more entrepreneurs and expands our movement to new countries, from Indonesia to Poland, we’ll continue to spark successful companies, much-needed jobs and cultures of innovation around the world. We invite you to join us. Linda Rottenberg Co-founder & CEO Endeavor

Entrepreneurial Ecosystems The Argentina Example SINCE 1997, ENDEAVOR HAS SELECTED 83 entrepreneurs in Argentina.

In 2010, these Endeavor companies generated $1.3 billion in revenues and employed 68,000 people. Endeavor Argentina's all-star Entrepreneurs include household names like Wences Casares and the founders of Globant.

C-HIE QUALITY OF LIFE SURVEY When C-HIE surveyed employees of Endeavor Argentina companies on their quality of life, the results confirmed what Endeavor has known for 13 years: high-impact firms offer employees higher-quality, betterpaying jobs. Moreover, employees of Endeavor companies believe in the power of entrepreneurship.

ENDEAVOR HAS HELPED ARGENTINA build a thriving

entrepreneurial ecosystem.

INFLUENCE PUBLIC POLICY Andy Freire, Endeavor Entrepreneur and Argentina’s Board Chairman, published Pasión por Emprender, a bestseller in Latin America about how implementing “universal” business theories in emerging markets does not necessarily lead to success.

Endeavor Argentina worked with the government of Buenos Aires on the design and implementation of Buenos Aires Emprende, a program that matches seed money with start-ups from the city.

DEVELOPMENT

WENCES CASARES Selected in 1997 for Patagon.com Bling Nation, Inc.

MARTÍN UMARAN, MARTÍN MIGOYA, NÉSTOR NOCETTI, GUIBERT ENGLEBIENNE Selected in 2005 Globant

Born on a sheep farm in Patagonia, Wences caught the entrepreneurial bug at the young age of 20, starting the first Internet Service Provider in Argentina. Three years later, in 1997, he founded Patagon.com, the first LatAm online broker. With Endeavor's support, Wences sold Patagon.com to Banco Santander for $585 million in 2000. One of Endeavor's most committed Entrepreneurs, Wences has mentored countless Endeavor Entrepreneurs, interviews candidates at International Selection Panels, and regularly attends and speaks at Endeavor events around the world. He joined Endeavor Global's Board of Directors in 2008 and was named the 2011 Endeavor Global Mentor of the Year. Today, Wences Casares is a household name in Argentina and an international role model for entrepreneurship.

Globant's founders have built an IT outsourcing shop into a rapidly growing, multinational corporation with almost 3,000 employees and clients like Electronic Arts and LinkedIn. Globant acquired OpenWare, an Argentina-based Endeavor Entrepreneur company, in 2008. They announced the acquisition of Nextive, a San Francisco-based software developer, in August 2011. The company plans to launch an IPO in the US next year. Following a visit to Google during the 2009 Endeavor Tech Retreat, the founders committed to building a strong company culture and reversing Argentina's brain drain. Their success has been remarkable: Globant is today considered the Google of LatAm for its company culture, and many employees have been inspired by the Globant founders to become entrepreneurs themselves.

91% of employees believe that entrepreneurs have played a fundamental role in Argentina’s development.

THINKING

55% of employees reported that as a result of working for an entrepreneurial firm, they are now “thinking about becoming an entrepreneur.”

A 2011 cover story reported on the challenges of doing business in Argentina and featured six Endeavor Entrepreneurs.

In 2011, co-founder Hernan Kazah and Nicolás Szekasy, both Endeavor Argentina board members, launched a $75M venture capital fund to support the next generation of tech entrepreneurs.

Over the last year, 10 entrepreneurs and Endeavor companies have been featured in the Financial Times, Inc Magazine, and La Nacion, stressing their impact on the Argentina business landscape. Nearly 5000 people attended Experiencia Endeavor events in seven Argentine cities in 2010.

FOSTER COMPETITIVE MARKETS: One of Endeavor Argentina’s first companies selected, MercadoLibre.com went public on the NASDAQ in 2007. By 2011, MercadoLibre’s market cap had reached US$3 billion.

CREATE ROLE MODELS & SHARE THEIR INSPIRING STORIES:

SHAPE ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION: Fifty case studies on Endeavor Argentina and Endeavor Argentina Entrepreneurs were taught in universities in 2010. Endeavor Argentina partners with eight Universities to help shape entrepreneurial curriculum.

After selection by Endeavor, OfficeNet was acquired by Staple. A Harvard Business School case study on OfficeNet has been taught around the world.

The only way to survive in Argentina is to be entrepreneurial.

Gustavo, Juan, and Martin have pioneered a technology that synthesizes millions of tweets, comments, and Internet chatter into intelligent marketing information. Clients use this data to make effective marketing decisions. As the sole provider of these services in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, Socialmetrix has enjoyed rapid growth across South America-signing its first two dozen multinational companies as clients.

HIGH-IMPACT IS

Through Endeavor introductions and with Endeavor’s critical mentoring support, Socialmetrix recently attracted a high profile investment from a UKbased firm. In 2004, Daniel and Fernando saw the demand for online health and wellness information in their country and created the WebMD of Brazil. MinhaVida, which began as a nutrition website and has expanded to address all health issues, provides instant access to a virtual library of more than 15,000 texts and guides written by physicians, medical associations and universities. With twelve million registered users and ten million hits per month, it has become the most popular health and wellness portal in Latin America and is well on its way to becoming Brazil’s most recognized health and wellness brand. Through mentorship and introductions to lawyers and consultants, Endeavor Brazil has helped the Entrepreneurs refine their growth and financing strategy as well as build a strong organizational structure to support a larger workforce.

In 1989 Oscar and Ricardo opened a sandwich shop in a working class neighborhood of Santiago. Today, Doggis’ skateboarding hotdog mascot is in 150 locations in Chile. Doggis is Chile’s third largest fast food chain and the largest of five branded restaurants under Oscar and Ricardo’s holding company, Gastronomia y Negocios. One of their key strategies for success has been to scale through a franchise model—which has in turn empowered a new generation of entrepreneurs in their traditionally risk averse home country.

2011

Since selection, Endeavor has worked extensively with Doggis on their international expansion strategy. Having conquered Chile, Oscar and Ricardo are now ready, with Endeavor’s guidance, to take their fast food empire to the rest of Latin America.

By integrating medicine, health, and fitness, BodyTech is “lifting” the health club standard across Latin America. In 1997, Gigiola and Nicolás wrote the business plan for BodyTech as their MBA thesis; fourteen years later, BodyTech’s 30 gyms in Colombia employ 1300 people, and the growth shows no sign of slowing. With the support of an Endeavor BCG fellow and the Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness in Latin America Program (ECLA), the company is expanding throughout Latin America.

HIGH-IMPACT IS

In September 2011, BodyTech launched the first fitness-training institute in Colombia. An Endeavor-provided Kellogg team wrote the Educational Institute’s strategic plan, and two Endeavor Colombia VentureCorps mentored Gigiola and Nicolás throughout the plan’s execution.

As crowds gathered in Tahrir Square in early 2011, rapid access to information was critical. A record number of Egyptians turned to their mobile phones and T.A. Telecom’s Content and Alerts Platform (CAP) for the latest news. Over a decade ago, Amr pioneered his mobile technology with demographically-targeted, permission-based SMS advertising. Today he specializes in creating value for the cost-savvy prepaid mobile customer as well as capturing this value and generating revenues for mobile operators. With 10 million subscribers across all services and platforms in Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Afghanistan, the company is positioned to become MENA’s premier mobile platform for time- and locationspecific content.

Moving forward, Endeavor will provide support as the company scales and expands to different countries in the region.

Dr. Amjad Aryan has a clear goal: to turn his company Pharmacy 1 into the “CVS of the Middle East.” After working for CVS and acquiring a small chain of pharmacies in Miami, Amjad returned to Jordan, where he opened the first Pharmacy 1 branch in 2001. Amjad aims to introduce distinguished pharmaceutical health care to the region by focusing on customer service. Pharmacy 1 operates several 24-hour branches and offers valet service in areas where parking is limited. Today the company is the number one retail pharmacy chain in the country, with over 50 branches, and is the first regional pharmacy chain in the Middle East.

Amjad’s Endeavor Entrepreneur Advisory Board counseled him on his strategy for entering the Saudi market through the purchase of existing pharmacies. Endeavor also nominated Amjad for the Ernst & Young Jordan Entrepreneur of the Year award, which he won!

Nada Debs has built an elite design brand manufactured by a network of 150 artisans in Lebanon. Her designs mix a zen-like simplicity, drawn from her childhood spent in Japan, with the aesthetic traditions of the Middle East. In addition to her flagship stores in Beirut, Nada’s products can be purchased at top furniture stores worldwide, from New York to Dubai to Cairo. Her brand has been featured in over 120 magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Vogue, Monocle, and The Wall Street Journal. Her designs decorate everything from the children’s rooms in the Jordanian Royal Palace to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi. Nada’s accessories were used as VIP gifts for the World Economic Forum. Endeavor is working with Nada Debs to scale the business through a new management structure.

Raúl Polakof's company, Scanntech, is the middleman between independent grocers in Uruguay, service providers, and large consumer goods companies. Scanntech services all three groups: grocers receive promotions and inventory management solutions, while service providers and CPGs gain access to Scanntech’s ever-growing network of grocers. Raúl’s clients include high-profile names like Unilever, CocaCola, Kraft, and Visa, and, to date, 80% of Uruguay’s small-to-medium sized grocery stores have hired Scanntech to implement bar codes. Raúl has worked with eMBA students, Ernst & Young fellows, and an Endeavor-built advisory board. After participating in Endeavor’s Mentor Capital Program, he raised capital from a Chilean fund to finance his expansion to Argentina. Today, Raúl seeks to raise a second round of financing. To do so, Endeavor has organized more than ten meetings with American and Brazilian Venture Capitalists.

During the revolution, Endeavor’s office in Cairo stayed open and continued servicing entrepreneurs! Shortly after the revolution, three Egyptian candidates became Endeavor Entrepreneurs at the March 2011 International Selection Panel in Mexico City.

I’d like to see Endeavor select hundreds of companies out of areas as remote as it gets, even the countryside, even in villages. I believe that there is an entrepreneur everywhere. I believe in that.

Endeavor was formed for the purpose of promoting entrepreneurs in emerging markets. Its basic model is to link up small and midsize businesses with seasoned entrepreneurs so that the little guys and gals can get the advice and contacts they need to grow their companies into bigger businesses that can employ more people — the best anti-poverty program of all.
