BAST RECAST by TENCEL™ - APR 2021 - TIME BOOK by ENDRIME

A collaborative circular project using the Latest TENCEL™️ Lyocell and Hemp denim innovations.

All fabrics were developed in house by NAVEENA DENIM LTD, based in Lahore Pakistan exclusively for this collection using a mix of TENCEL™️ Lyocell, Wet spun and Cottonized Hemp from Hemp Supplier KINGDOM .

The entire collection was designed, pattern cut, sewn by ENDRIME®️ Studio based in West Sussex UK.

Each garment style is being exhibited as both raw and washed, with Jeanologia responsible for all the processing. All finishes being designed to achieve a low EIM rating.

All the Joker labels, Hang tags were made direct from the off cuts of the TENCEL™️ Lyocell and Hemp denim fabrics to form recycled paper and card. Making the collection with circular ethos. This TENCEL™️ Lyocell and Hemp denim paper was made in Collaboration with Duncan Eldridge from WARPFACE. All tags were made by hand.

Subsequently all dye stuff used on paper TENCEL™️ Lyocell and Hemp denim paper was made from officina+39 Recycrom™️. A revolutionary sustainable dyestuffs range, patented, using recycled used clothing, fibrous material and textile scraps (100% of recycled textile materials) - all by a sophisticated process.

All the sewing thread in the collection is made by Crafil 100% certified TENCEL™️ Lyocell thread, (Celofil®️) developed especially to be used with all types of garments, and is 100% biodegradable.

Lenzing’s Bast Recast collection would not have been possible without collaboration. When we set out to create designs using hemp mixed with TENCEL™ Lyocell, the project relied on the expertise and vision of partners—from mills to marketing.

During this April’s Kingpins24, Lenzing unveiled Bast Recast, their latest Sustainable Denim Wardrobe collection, featuring fabric made from blends of TENCEL™ Lyocell, TENCEL™ Modal, Hemp and cotton.

‘BAST’ because hemp is a member of the bast fiber family and ‘RECAST’ because hemp is being reinvented for the apparel industry.

While the collection just debuted in 2021, Bast Recast was set in motion towards the end of 2019 after a meeting in London between Naveena Denim Limited’s (NDL) Rashid Iqbal and Michael Kininmonth from Lenzing.

NDL was showcasing its first hemp based collection, and the idea of adding further to the range with blends of hemp and TENCEL™ was set in motion.

“I knew from work I’d done many years ago that there was a real synergy between blends of TENCEL™ Lyocell and bast fibers,” Michael explained.

“The whole idea behind this project was to merge the latest technologies with vintage denims. Enhancing the aesthetics of hemp with those of TENCEL™ fibers appeared to be a great marriage worth exploring,” said Rashid.

Endrime’s co-owners Mohsin Sajid and Sadia Rafique were the main collaborators on this project from the beginning, and worked with Naveena Denim Limited to develop nine fabrics. During the lockdown in the United Kingdom, the pair designed everything in-house. This included the 18 garments in the collection as well as the branding.

All of the pieces, which were produced at Endrime’s West Sussex design studio, were conceptualized to be historically authentic to the late 1800s. The construction stayed true to the time period with single needle tailoring and no overlocking.

“For any denim designer, this is a complete joy to look at this spirit, because all the details are a lot more considered,” explained creative director Mohsin.

Sadia, art director of Endrime, created the branding for the collection, which was printed onto recycled hemp denim paper from Warp-Face using Mohsin’s off-cuts from the collection.

“We knew that we were going to use [Warp-Face’s] amazing hemp denim paper, so I didn’t want to overcomplicate the overall visual aesthetic as there are so many great elements to consider in this collection. So I researched and referenced vintage denim branding from woven labels at the turn of the century to keep the look in keeping with Mohsin’s view for the collection.”

Sadia also did the creative direction and managed the Bast Recast photoshoot and short film that debuted during the Kingpins Show in April.

Along with the recycled denim paper, the graphic appears on fabric tags on the garment. Instead of a leather patch, the branding is printed on hemp duck canvas.

For the collection, sustainability and recyclability were key themes. In the garment design, this extended to details and trims such as TENCEL™ thread and rivet-free pockets. When it came time to develop the hangtags, we knew we wanted a similarly low-impact option.

Another aspect of the collection was hearkening back to the denim of the late 1800s. Combining both the vintage and planet-friendly stories into one, we tapped U.K.-based studio Warp-Face to make recycled denim paper tags. The naturally blue paper made of denim scraps saves old jeans from landfills. Therefore, for Bast Recast, Endrime(R) saved all the denim offcuts while making the collection for WarpFace to make the TENCEL(TM) x hemp paper.

Warp-Face uses traditional letter pressing techniques, giving its printing a timeless appeal and preserving the past. For this collection, the branding designed by Endrime’s Sadia Rafique was printed using Recycrom dye from Officina+39, marking the first time the dye was used for printing on paper.

“We talked about the authenticity of this project, and at that time of that late 19th century, this is how it would have been done, it would have been letterpress and that paper would have been made locally,” said Warp-Face owner Duncan Eldridge, who called it his “dream project.”

Each garment style is being exhibited as both raw and washed, with long time collaborator Jeanologia responsible for all the finishing.

Victoria Soto, Technology Consultant at the Valencian based consultancy says:

“It was so interesting to work on these new fabric blends. We focused on provide a great aesthetics for this amazing collection but as always achieving a low EIM rating/score as our primary target.”

A mixture of Laser, G2 Pre-Ozonic, enzyme wash, light pp + damages, nano microbreaks, atmospheric, e-flow resine, rotation clay + sand, curing, soaping, e-flow softening and stains were used through out the sustainable washing of this collection.

While thread is often not the first thing that gets noticed in fashion, it is a crucial element of both construction and the overall environmental footprint of a garment. While polyester thread is popular, the synthetic material doesn’t biodegrade like cotton, TENCEL™ or hemp.

Keeping with the sustainability focus of the project, the Bast Recast garments were sewn with 100 percent TENCEL™ Lyocell thread by Crafil. Along with being biodegradable, the TENCEL™ thread is stronger than cotton threads.

“I wanted to move away from polyester core thread for a long, long time,” explained Mohsin Sajid of Endrime, who designed and produced the Bast Recast collection. Earlier, he had tried out linen and cotton thread, and while cotton looked “beautiful,” it couldn’t hold up during treatments. In contrast, the TENCEL™ Lyocell thread had no problems. “It was a test, but it was a joy,” Mohsin added.

Mohsin selected from an array of color options to fit the vintage designs, and Crafil developed thread specifically for the project. The garments were single needle tailored with nods to some of the earliest jeans.

Based in Portugal, Crafil began in 2004, and it was one of the first companies to market with a TENCEL™ thread for garment dye in 2013. The company has focused on creating sustainable thread options, and the market is responding.

“The industry is asking more and more, and we are very happy to see that everybody is looking for sustainable products,” said Vitor Teixeira, sales executive at Crafil.

The driving force behind the collection was sustainability. Along with using the natural TENCEL™ and hemp fibers, the designs used 100 percent TENCEL™ thread from Crafil and low-impact washing techniques by Jeanologia. Even details like the branding took environmental footprint into account.

Warp-Face fashioned the paper for hangtags and labels out of recycled denim scraps, with the logo and lettering printed using a traditional letterpress. And instead of using a leather patch on the back of jeans, Endrime picked out duck canvas made of hemp.

All of the labeling was printed using Officina+39’s Recycrom dye, which is made from textile waste. The chemistry company creates pigment powders by crystalizing recycled fabric fibers. These colors can then be used on materials such as cotton, wool, nylon and natural fabrics for applications like dyeing, screen printing and coating.

The use of Recycrom on paper for Bast Recast was a first. “Until now, we concentrated mainly our effort into application for the textile industry, but it has been really amazing to see Recycrom applied on the labels. So I think this project is opening new opportunities for us for Recycrom,” said Andrea Venier, managing director of Officina+39.

Andrea added that this is an example of sustainable collaboration in action. “I think this collaboration is really a concrete commitment to the UN 2030 agenda, in particular SDG 17, so the partnership for the goal. I think your efforts during last year to create a project and put around one table different players, different resources, efforts, I think it’s something very important to show to our industry a new model, a new approach,” said Andrea.
