Get in and get out is my motto. I don’t have time to be in the gym for two hours. But I do have to feel really good, and get my heart rate up. That’s the key for me.” In addition to dedicated exercise time, focus on other ways to be active throughout the day, such as taking a walk on your lunch break. Not only can a 15-minute walk during your lunch hour give you energy to power through the afternoon, but walking can also increase your focus and overall mood, according to a 2017 study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. There’s also evidence that the effects of an afternoon walk may last into evening, giving you focus to make dinner, help children with homework and perform other tasks that require energy and concentration. HOW ONE IDEA - BIG OR SMALL - CAN HELP CHANGE CANCER CARE
A
nyone who has confronted cancer or helped a friend or family member battle the disease knows that the challenges go far beyond diagnosis and treatment. Managing the cancer journey and life after treatment calls on support from family and the surrounding community. It is this community that may have the greatest potential to improve lives of people touched by cancer, by using their own experiences to inform solutions.

Consider the everyday challenge of getting to and from the many doctor appointments during cancer treatment, or keeping a child’s spirits up while he or she is sick. People affected by cancer - not just doctors or researchers, but those closest to the patient’s journey such as caregivers, first responders, dietitians, therapists, patients themselves and more - have ideas that can transform care in these small but important ways.
Now in its fourth year, the Astellas Oncology C3 (Changing Cancer Care) Prize is looking for ideas beyond medicine that can transform cancer care and solve everyday challenges that people touched by cancer face. Applications are open now until July 15, 2019. This year, the C3 Prize will award up to $200,000 in total funds and resources to help winners bring their ideas to life. Past winners used their own personal experiences to inform their ideas, which are helping people with cancer today. Ebele Mbanugo of Lagos, Nigeria, 2018 Grand Prize Winner After her mother and two aunts were diagnosed with cancer, Mbanugo was driven to create an organization that opened access and eliminated barriers to affordable breast cancer screenings. Winning the C3 Prize brought her one step closer to launching a program that fights the social stigma around breast cancer by creating a culturally relevant and easy-to-understand podcast series about breast cancer for patients. Since winning the C3 Prize, Mbanugo has been piloting the audio series that reflects Nigerian patients and individuals in the community. Hernani Oliveira, 2017 Grand Prize Winner Oliveira is a cancer survivor who developed a two-part mobile app for kids with cancer and their parents. The app for kids helps them stay active and mobile during their treatments where they often are sedentary, while the app for parents helps them understand and explain complex cancer treatment procedures. Both platforms help solve issues related to medication adherence. Since winning the C3 Prize, Oliveira has been focused on running trials on different prototypes of the app to improve the quality of the game and thereby reduce hospital admission times for patients. Oliveira will also join this year’s panel of judges, alongside celebrity entrepreneur and cancer activist Bill Rancic, who learned firsthand the difficulties of navigating a cancer diagnosis after his wife, entertainment journalist Giuliana Rancic, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. Calling for Entries This year’s C3 Prize calls for ideas in three categories related to unmet needs: 1) Cancer Care Journey, to help improve the cancer patient experience, ease their decision-making and help navigate the treatment process; 2) Cancer Health Disparities, to help reduce the unequal burden of cancer care, especially in creating tools and resources to reach underserved populations in the U.S. and abroad; and 3) Cancer Survivorship, to help alleviate the challenges and concerns of cancer survivors as they continue their journey to wellness. All applications, regardless of submission category, will be considered for the following awards: one Grand Prize of $100,000; two Innovation Prizes for $45,000 each and one Emerging Ideas Prize for $10,000. Judges will consider entries for the Emerging Ideas Prize if they have great potential impact for patients and caregivers but need further development before implementing. Finalists will be selected to compete in front of a panel of judges during a live pitch event in the fall. Anyone is welcome to apply by July 15. 5 Simple Ways to Make Healthy Choices at Summer BBQs

hile fun, all those barbecues and cookouts of summer can present a challenge when you’re trying to lose weight and stay healthy. However, there’s no need to ditch these fun gettogethers for fear of derailing your healthy lifestyle. Instead, you can employ some simple tricks to help you stay on track. According to Courtney McCormick, manager of clinical research and nutrition at Nutrisystem, here are several ways to keep winning at weight loss without missing out on the fun. • Volunteer to Bring the Appetizers: If you don’t want your only snacking choice to be chips and high-calorie onion dip or a cheese and meat tray, offer to bring a chopped veggie plate along with lowfat dip, or baked chips with salsa or hummus. “I’m a big fan of making my own chips to bring to barbecues. I’ll make kale chips or apple chips -- they’re always a crowd-pleaser,” says Genie Francis, soap opera television star and Nutrisystem ambassador.

• Take a Small Scoop of Coleslaw: Even if it’s made with high-fat mayonnaise, one serving (around three ounces) is only about 172 calories and has two grams of fiber (thank you cabbage!), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Better yet, make your own and bring it with you -- just swap in low-calorie mayo for the regular variety or do a vinegarbased dressing to cut the calories by as much as two-thirds. • Enjoy Those Baked Beans (in Moderation): We all love baked beans at a BBQ. Feel free to eat them, just try to stick to half a cup or less, as one cup could have more than 300 calories, depending on the brand. The good news is that this side is also high in hunger-satisfying fiber -- half a cup has about five grams. • Load Up on Green Salad: Produce is abundant this time of year. Bring a green salad to the party. Don’t forget to add lots of lowcalorie veggies and pair it with a bottle of low-calorie dressing. Or, opt for grilled veggie kebabs, which are full of fiber and flavor and light on calories. • For Dessert, Think Fresh or Frozen: End your meal with a slice of watermelon, a scoop of fruit salad or fruity sorbet, or a healthful frozen fruit bar. hen visiting one of the stunningly diverse 419 national park sites nationwide, experts say it is important to recognize the individuals who have spoken up over the decades to protect and enhance these incredible places, as well as the work that is still needed.
“It’s difficult to imagine what the U.S. would be like without the Grand Canyon or the Great Smoky Mountains or the Statue of Liberty. National parks offer more than hiking paths, beachfronts and mountaintops,” says Theresa Pierno, president and CEO of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). “We find a sense of identity and inspiration in these treasured places. They speak to who we are as Americans.” Additionally, national parks offer veterans, active-duty members and their families places of solace, healing and reflection, while honoring their service. More than a quarter of our national park sites commemorate military history, from Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, to places such as Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks, where Buffalo Soldiers were the first park rangers. National parks don’t exist as they do today by accident. Today, Florida Panthers still roam in Florida’s Everglades; hikers in Joshua Tree don’t gaze at what would have been the country’s largest landfill; and the country’s diverse and shared history is celebrated in national parks, from Cesar Chavez to Birmingham to Stonewall, thanks to the work of conservationists, including NPCA. For 100 years, NPCA has served as a fearless defender of national parks. The idea for NPCA came at the urging of the first National Park Service director, Stephen Mather and his colleague, Robert Sterling Yard, who believed that national parks needed a voice, separate from the federal government, whose sole responsibility was to protect and enhance them for present and future generations. “The earliest park advocates shared a goal that lives on today, of ensuring the wonder of these places is preserved,” says Pierno. Each of us serves as beneficiaries of their vision and action. Now it’s our turn to ensure that 100 years from now, people will still be able to watch Old Faithful erupt at Yellowstone, learn about the history of our democracy at Independence Hall and stand in amazement as brown bears wade into Brooks Falls searching for fish at Katmai in Alaska.” Unfortunately, national parks continue to face threats, including pollution that is harming their air and water, climate change, energy development, inadequate federal funding and a list of repair needs that is nearly $12 billion across the entire National Park System. Experts say that parks are also threatened by attempts to derail policies and laws meant to protect these treasured places -- from carving up national monuments for development to fast-tracking oil and gas leasing in and near some of America’s last truly wild places.
