4 Home Improvement Ideas hether you’re thinking about a bathroom update, kitchen overhaul or any other type of home improvement project, these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and eLivingtoday.com can help you get started.

W

Create a Plan Improving your home can be one of the most exciting projects to undertake. Start by setting realistic expectations, determining your goals and needs, finding inspiration and, perhaps most importantly, setting a budget. Renovate the Bathroom You can improve your home’s usability and increase its value with bathroom updates or a full renovation. Before you get started, think about these factors: the amount of space and storage you need, features that are important to you, sustainability concerns and accessibility considerations. (FamilyFeatures)

Update the Kitchen The kitchen serves as command-central for most homes, and you can get the most enjoyment out of yours by making purposeful changes, reconsidering the physical space, re-evaluating your shopping style and choosing appliances with care.

Start a Remodel If it’s time for a serious undertaking, a full-blown remodel may be necessary (or simply desired). Remodeling typically calls for hiring a professional contractor, a process you can go about by gathering local recommendations, asking for licensing and insurance, checking references and comparing bids. Winter Skin Care 101

C

old weather can take a real toll on your skin. Dry skin can lead to discomfort and, if neglected, can affect your skin’s elasticity and trigger outbreaks of irritated skin. Help keep your skin feeling healthy and hydrated this winter with these tips: Drink water. Hydrating your body from the inside out plays an important role in keeping skin supple and soft. When you’re dehydrated, the body pulls water from any source it can, including your skin. A good rule of thumb is at least 8 cups of water a day. Hydrate with food. You can also boost your internal water reserves by eating foods rich in water, nutrients, vitamins and beneficial fats and oils. Fish, nuts and avocados all contain plenty of essential nutrients that help promote wellhydrated skin. Foods like cucumber, zucchini, lettuce and watermelon also naturally have a high concentration of water. Use body lotion. Your skin naturally loses moisture throughout the day through evaporation, but you can help trap the hydration you add from bathing by adding a layer of quality lotion. An option like Remedy Dermatology Series Moisturizing Body Lotion contains a proprietary botanical blend of nutrients, emollients and antioxidants, including green tea, clove and safflower oleosomes. Its smooth, rich formula absorbs quickly, leaving skin feeling soft with no greasy or oily residue. Formulated by skin care experts, the lotion helps skin stay moisturized for up to 24 hours and is free of 80 of the most common allergens that contribute to rashes and skin sensitivity. Learn more at remedyderm.com. (Family Features)

Protect skin. Exposure to harsh weather can quickly dry and chap your skin, so any time you’ll be outdoors, especially for extended periods of time, be sure to cover up exposed areas. Keep an extra set of gloves and a scarf in your vehicle so you’re prepared for unexpected time outdoors, whether from an accident or impromptu stop at a local park for some fresh air and exercise. Change out of wet clothes. Always remove wet clothes as soon as possible. Not only do cold, wet clothes affect your body’s ability to regulate internal temperature, they can create friction that leads to uncomfortable and painful skin irritation. If getting wet is unavoidable, consider layering your clothing so you can shed wet outer layers quickly before they can soak through. Use a humidifier. The indoor climate becomes considerably drier in the winter months when the furnace runs regularly. Using a humidifier can help restore a level of humidity that’s better for your skin. Aim for humidity levels in the range of 35-50%; depending on your climate, you may need to err on the lower side of the scale to reduce condensation on windows. Wear sunscreen. Winter sun rays are just as strong as summer rays, even if you don’t feel their heat quite as much. In fact, snow burns that result from sun reflecting off the snow can be even more dangerous than regular sunburns. Protect your skin from burning and drying out by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 any time you venture outdoors. Lotion Do’s and Don’ts Do use lotion, even when your skin doesn’t feel dry. Experts say you should apply moisturizer onto damp skin to help lock in any water sitting on the surface before it evaporates. Don’t use too much. Quality moisturizers are highly concentrated and designed to be effective without a thick layer. If you use too much, it’s more likely to sit on the surface of your skin, occlude the surface and potentially trigger breakouts. Do look for products that match your skin type. While there are common allergens that are present in many lotions, an option like Remedy Dermatology Series Moisturizing Body Lotion is free of parabens, fragrances and aloe that can irritate sensitive skin or allergies. 8 RENEW

TALES FROM THE TRENCHES:

BIKINI SEASON PART ONE

I

Kerri Pomarolli - Best Selling Author, Clean Comedian, Speaker

awakened last week to the familiar tingling of my feet at 29 weeks pregnant. Baby was 29 weeks. Happy Birthday baby! As a pregnant woman I’m always counting her weeks because each one counts. The longer she “bakes in the mommy oven” the better. It’s August in California so there definitely could be worse places to be right now but nonetheless it’s hot. My husband was out of town and I thought I’d spend a nice Saturday morning organizing our little home and doing “mom” things. Then I had a bridal shower of a girlfriend to attend. I actually spent the morning on BabyCenter.com researching possible cures and causes for the tingling in my extremities. I got everything from carpal tunnel syndrome to high blood pressure. I don’t have either of those. I’ve decided my diagnosis is “pregnant.” I did hear that the circulation could be helped sometimes by taking extra iron. But then my neighbor told me if I take too much iron I could die from “Iron overdose” and I prefer to live. This morning is just one of those mornings (StatePoint) where I’m not too happy about my condition and the way my body looks. I had a nightmare last night that my thighs were turning blue from all the varicose veins and they had been that way for a while but I was too big in the belly to see them. I have to admit there are certain parts of my body I make a conscious choice not to look at. If I could do that when I’m not pregnant I’m sure I’d have higher self-esteem. Just think if all the women of the world made a pledge “We’re not going to look in a mirror below our waists. We will not turn around in a mirror and obsess about the size of our God given “back”, as J-Lo would call it? I think we’d all be a little plumper and a lot happier don’t you?

I was going to see a few of my good friends today who hadn’t seen me in weeks. I did not want the first reaction to be “Oh my goodness...look how big you are!” I had that happen with my other friend Trista the other day that by the way looks fabulous because she was off to Hawaii and ten pounds lighter than normal. Her jaw dropped and she kept repeating over and over “No Way! Wow! No Way!” That is exactly what she said when I told her Ron and I are going to have a baby! “No Way! Wow! You? No Way!!!” I love her. She’s so supportive and nurturing. I felt bigger than ever because I’ve just recently put on 10 lbs in the past month. My whole goal for pregnancy was/is 25 lbs. I’m up to 20 and I’m only 29 weeks. Yeah I’m depressed, being the goal setter that I am. So I had decided to wear my cutest blue maternity dress with my brand new 38C nursing bra, which was still too tight around my back. Mind you I started out as a 34B and now I have to use the bra extender I bought from the maternity shop on a 38 bra. What happened? Those bra extenders you buy are really cheap and make the backs looser so they don’t cut off your circulation as much. The problem with my outfit is that the bra was so much material in the front it kept sticking out of the armpits of my cute dress. I don’t know how the well-endowed women of America do when they’re prego? That’s a lot of bra! I thought I wanted to have a bigger chest before I was pregnant. Now I realize I don’t need the upkeep. Anyway, my feet were still tingling but I really wanted to wear my cute pink shoes to the shower. They are flats after all and have adorable bows on them. They were not comfortable from the moment I put them on. But I refused to give into the fact that my swollen feet could be making some of my shoes uncomfortable. Some women even warned me my foot would grow a whole shoe size. That would be a terrible feat if you ask me. I love my shoes. I got that little habit from my own mother who thinks good shoes are a sign of good breeding and Godliness. I didn’t even think to bring a back up pair of more comfortable shoes for later in the day. I waddled out to my car and drove in the hot summer sun to the shower. I arrive to see my girlfriends all looking radiant and thin. Even the one who has a 6-month-old son looks like a poster girl for “Slim Fast.” She’s a model and so is her husband. So I think it’s in her job description to look thin and beautiful at all times. I’m glad I didn’t become a super model like I planned when I was 7. Everyone was really polite and ooohed and aaaahed over my little pregnant belly and noone said how huge I looked. I took my place outside to enjoy a lovely lunch of salads and fruit and later some strawberry shortcake. I felt proud of myself for not totally indulging into too much sugar filled dessert or soda that day because I had been trying to watch my calories a little more since my last Dr. appt and my 10 lb weight gain. At 2:00pm it was time to go and my feet were officially killing me. I made it back to my car and concluded I’d be driving straight home in these shoes and unable to do any errands. I decided to take the scenic route home through the pier and downtown areas of the beach communities. One of my favorite times living in southern California has always been summer because we’d have beach parties and barbques and everyone would be out mingling all over the streets enjoying ice cream cones and other summer treats. It’s a great vibe.

f coordinating schedules to gather the family around the dinner table is a victory in its own right, finding enough time to prepare a well-rounded, flavorful meal may just be a medal-worthy accomplishment. Whether a weeknight dinner or special occasion, you can shave precious minutes off your kitchen work and dedicate more moments to doing the things you love with these time-saving ideas that don’t sacrifice quality.

Plan Meals Ahead of Time Organizing your thoughts and scouring the kitchen for ingredients can take as much time as preparing the meal itself. Instead of wondering what you’ll make and whether you have what you need to make it, take time to plan meals a week ahead whenever possible. Think through a complete menu, including main dishes and sides, and take inventory of the pantry and refrigerator so you can build an efficient grocery list.

Use Ingredients in Multiple Recipes When planning and shopping for your weekly meals, consider which ingredients you may be able to repurpose. Not only does using ingredients across multiple dishes help minimize waste, it cuts down on prep time. If you’ll be using chopped onion in multiple recipes, go ahead and chop enough for every meal and save the unused portions in the refrigerator or freezer. Turn to Your Pantry for Simple Sides Flavorful side dishes can be surprisingly simple. For example, Idahoan helps you put real mashed potatoes on the table in just 5 minutes. They start with 100% real Idaho potatoes from local growers then wash, peel, boil and mash them like you would at home. After cooking each batch, they simply freshdry the mashed potatoes so they’re ready for you to prepare at home. Make Larger Portions Cooking once and eating twice (or more) is an easy equation for saving time. Intentionally making more than you need ensures fuss-free lunches or plenty of leftovers you can heat up quickly for nights when the family is running in different directions. Pre-Cook Proteins For many meals, the main dish protein takes the longest to prepare. If you can carve out some time over the weekend or one night a week, multitask and make several batches of proteins to use later in the week. Cooking the proteins concurrently lets you pack multiple days of preparation time into a single super-sized session. Use Time-Saving Tools Traditional methods have their time and place, but a weekday dinner isn’t it. Rely on tools to get the job done faster, like a slow cooker that works hard all day so you can enjoy its labor when you return home or a food processor that takes the effort out of slicing and dicing. Find more ideas to put meals on the table quickly at Idahoan.com.

Time-Saving Upgrades for Delicious Sides Mashed potatoes are a crowd-pleasing dish that can be incorporated in a wide range of menus. While they can often be time-consuming, an option like Idahoan can help you put real mashed potatoes on the table in just 5 minutes because they take the time to create mashed potatoes from scratch so you don’t have to. This allows you to embrace the staple side dish’s versatility by freeing up time for you to incorporate simple twists like these. Mix it up with all the fixings. From vegetables like corn or caramelized onions to classic garnishes like chopped fresh herbs, you can mix and match toppings for a new take on a loaded smashed sensation. Embrace Tex-Mex flair. Create your own version of ethnic favorites like traditional Mexican papas. Add lightly sauteed red and green peppers, green onion, green chilis and shredded cheese for a Tex-Mex potato dish perfect for pairing with tacos or enchiladas. Get garlicky. Add minced garlic and grated Parmesan cheese for a savory burst of flavor that complements the traditional potato taste. 12 RENEW

Did you make a resolution to lose weight and get healthy in 2020?

T

his may be the most common New Year’s resolution, but it’s also one of the most difficult to keep.

In fact, according to U.S. News, 80 percent of people give up on their New Year’s Resolution by mid-February. There’s no one reason to explain why this happens, but we do know that it’s difficult to change our behavior over long periods of time. If you made a promise to yourself to improve your health and lose weight, don’t give up now. Start by making small, achievable changes to your routine. Here are five tips to help you stay on track: • Try activities that don’t revolve around eating or drinking. Almost all family gatherings seem designed to gather us around the snack table. But there are plenty of other activities you can do together that will get you moving and making memories. Think of events that will emphasize connection and fun rather than snacking and drinking. Brainstorm with friends and family to find a new activity to try - bowling, hiking, pottery - the options are endless. • Offer to host. If you really want to take control, play host! Invite friends and family over to your place, where you can prepare everything so there are no surprises. Or if you’re meeting at a friend’s house, offer to bring a dish, and make something healthy that you know you’ll enjoy. When it’s time to eat, you can pile a big portion of this item on your plate and fill in the rest with other offerings that look good to you. • Don’t dance around your cravings. If you’re really craving a slice of pizza, order one and have a portion-controlled size. “When you avoid your cravings, you can end up overeating by trying to satisfy them with other foods,” says Courtney McCormick, corporate dietitian at Nutrisystem. Instead, identify what it is that you’re craving, order something that will satisfy, and take the time to truly savor and enjoy it. • Don’t turn a cheat meal into a cheat day. Many dieters trip up at one meal, get discouraged, and go overboard for the rest of the day because it’s already “ruined.” The term is “cheat meal,” not “cheat day.” If you have a meal that you think could set you back, remember that it’s only one meal. Don’t beat yourself up and don’t give up. “It’s always a good thing to learn from your missteps,” says Marie Osmond, entertainer, author, host of The Talk, and Nutrisystem ambassador. “Maybe the first time you crave chocolate, you’re going to grab a candy bar. Next time, you’ll have a smaller piece of dark chocolate or make yourself a Nutrisystem chocolate shake!” Cut yourself some slack, remember how much you enjoyed the “cheat,” and then get back on track - little decisions that you make, starting right away, will lead you closer to success. • Stay hydrated. You’ve heard this one before, but that’s because it works: if you do indulge in alcohol, alternating each drink with a glass of water will help slow your consumption so you don’t get too tipsy - which can lower your inhibitions to other foods and portions you’re trying to avoid. In fact, the alcohol may make greasy foods and sweets seem more appealing. Water will also keep you hydrated, which can make you feel less “snacky,” since our bodies sometimes mistake thirst for hunger. A

new survey of small business executives reveals key insights of what it takes to stay competitive today -- and technology and attracting top talent are crucial.

Small Business Owners Say Continual Tech Investments Are Critical

The survey, conducted by The Harris Poll and sponsored by CIT Group Inc. (NYSE:CIT), explores the intersection of technology and talent to identify small business executives’ top priorities for investment and growth.

(StatePoint)

Among those surveyed, 37% plan to invest even more in their businesses during the next 12 months compared to the past 12 months, and of those planning to invest, cloud computing systems, customer relationship management tools and cyber security/ data privacy are key priorities.

“Understanding these key insights and trends can help small businesses maintain a competitive edge and also drive growth,” says Ken Martin managing director of CIT’s Small Business Solutions unit, which offers lending options that give small businesses the financial agility needed to adopt advanced technology-enabled solutions. The survey also revealed that earlier technology investments have already paid off for small businesses, with more than 40% crediting tech spending as a top driver of growth over the past 12 months. Additionally, 84% of survey respondents agreed that continuous technological investment is a business need. 79% agree that it’s critical in helping to attract and retain customers. At the same time, small business leaders recognize that their workforce will play a major role in implementing technology investments and addressing the risks that may come with them. While 82% of survey respondents say their current workforce is tech-savvy enough to keep up with the pace of digital transformation, 69% also say they focus on hiring tech-savvy employees. “Technology is only as effective as the employees that implement it and the customers that benefit from it,” says Denise Menelly, CIT executive vice president and head of Technology and Operations, Suduko Solution - Puzzle on Page 15 “Our own successful integration of technology and talent has been instrumental in empowering both our clients and employees.” Cybersecurity and data privacy are top of mind for small business executives, as 56% say that the risk of security or data breaches are among the top concerns when it comes to technological changes. Other concerns include not knowing how new technology will work with current tools or systems and not having enough capital to invest in the latest technology. Less than a third of small business executives are currently outsourcing financial aspects of their business, such as payroll, credit protection, talent acquisition and accounts receivables management. However, as companies add more employees, it’s more likely that they’ll consider outsourcing these various services. As small businesses beef up their investments, they are focusing on technology and talent, which experts say is a formula for success in a competitive market. 14 RENEW
