ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Writing this book has been a wonderful experience. There are so many people that I have met during my life and who deserve my thanks and my gratitude. It would be impossible to name them all, so I bow to each of them and whisper Namaste. I express my deep gratitude to my Master Sri Sathya Sai Baba for his inspiration, his guidance, and his wise teachings that continue to enlighten my life like sunlight. To Sara, my wife, who took care of our daughters Matilde and Sofia while I was writing this book, supporting and encouraging me as only she can do. Sharing with her the message of love coming from inner laughter is surely a result of good karma. To my daughters for the gift they gave me of being their daddy, and to whom I speak also through this book. Thanks to my parents, not only with words but with my heart. To Raul, my brother and his clown who is much nicer than him. To Sara’s family for their love. To my “Life Guru” Dr Madan Kataria and his wife Madhuri for their love, their constant presence, and for all I have received and keep in my heart. To all the staff at EIFIS, my publisher, for their dedication,
commitment, and professionalism that brought me to you, dear reader. To Master Choa Kok Sui and Loretta Zanuccoli for their support and the wonderful energy they lavished on this project. To Leonardo, Laura, and Davide for their precious work. To Elena Benvenuti for having believed in the message of love that can be conveyed with the power of a smile and the magic of laughter. Her encouragement and editing were critical, and for this I am infinitely grateful. To Don Miguel, Don Josè Ruiz, and Livio Sgarbi for the magic of their words. To Angelo Rosso and Alvise Fedrigo for their support and their friendship, and to Francesca for answering my phone call. To all the leaders and teachers at the Laughter Yoga Foundation, who honor me with their friendship. It would be impossible to name them all. INTRODUCTION
The book you have in your hands is the story of Richard, a student I personally trained in India as a Laughter Yoga Teacher. A few months after participating in my training, in a very short time and with great enthusiasm, Richard was able to open a Laughter Club in Puttaparthi, the village in southern India known all over the world as the headquarters of the spiritual Ashram of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Many people from around the world experienced and benefited from the free sessions of Laughter Yoga in his Laughter Club. Richard contributed to bringing inner laughter to the hearts of the devotees of Sai Baba, who, a few months before the opening of the club, had left his physical body. In a short time Richard had started training hundreds of leaders coming from all over the world, thus contributing to the spread of Laughter Yoga on a global scale. For this reason and for his dedication to our mission, which is to contribute to world peace through the benefits of unconditional laughter, the day I officially inaugurated the Laughter Club in Puttaparthi I nominated Richard “World Ambassador of Laughter Yoga. The work he is doing today in Italy and throughout the world with his WorkShocks is incredible because it reveals all his love for humanity! During his training sessions people are able to release their
emotions, reaching a state of profound wellbeing that contributes to their personal growth and awareness. Besides being an excellent professional and an able communicator, I am certain that Richard also has the gift of touching everybody’s heart with great simplicity. As you read this book, Richard will take you by the hand and guide you through the story of his life. Between the lines you will find many spiritual teachings that I am sure will give you the chance to reflect on the priceless value of your life. Richard explains how Laughter Yoga helped him to follow the inner light that is in all of us, making it possible for him to overcome the obstacles encountered over the course of his life, transforming them into opportunities in his pursuit of happiness. The sincerity of the story will move you, and I am sure it will inspire you to add more laughter to your life, giving you the opportunity to experience within yourself the magic of inner laughter. FOREWORD
“Worship your mother and father as God” - Upanishad “Always be happy” - Dad
THE LAST WALTZ The moment the doctors found that my dad was suffering from an incurable sickness, which would go on to devastate his beautiful and delicate face, was the start of one of the most difficult times of my life, lasting about a year. The experience of his illness profoundly changed many aspects of my character, my habits, and, above all, accelerated my inner search for the meaning of life. The doctors who were following him had concluded that his illness was incurable, and he was fully aware of the gravity and of the difficult therapy he would have to submit to. I never learned what his most intimate thoughts were upon receiving the verdict of medical science, but I do know that he continued to maintain a deep, inner peace. The impression my dad gave me was that he had accepted the idea of what was happening
to him. He had worked as a nurse in a psychiatric hospital for many years and his experience told him he would go through the most difficult time in his life. For the profound respect I had for him, I decided to leave school for that year, as I wanted to be near him and envelop him completely in my love. I wanted to dedicate to him every instant of my life. He deserved all my attention, and I did not want to miss the opportunity of spending time with him, not even for a minute. What I really wanted was for him to return to health as soon as possible, to go back to living life together as usual, and I hoped to complete all our our projects, quickly forgetting about this dark period. When I was alone I grieved, thinking about the illness. I couldn’t believe that he had to be the one to live through such a terrifying experience. Every time I thought about what was happening to him I felt like I was suffocating. I rejected the idea of seeing him unwell, I couldn’t see him suffering, I couldn’t watch him waste away because, from my point of view, it was completely unjust. In those moments I asked myself where God was, and most of all why He did not intervene to relieve my dad’s pain. It seemed like God did not exist or was busy doing something else. I felt lonely and deserted in my despair, and my inner pain was becoming unbearable. You are never truly prepared enough to face great challenges like illness, and, at times, faith is everything. Dad was an extraordinary person, he had dedicated his life to his family and strongly believed in friendship. For his friends he was more than a friend or a brother, he was a point of reference. For 14 - ALWAYS BE HAPPY
him, friends were an important part of life. He was always available to all, especially in hard times. He was loved by many because he could instill joy in every word and every gesture. What made him special was his ability to play down the problems of the people he met, helping them to see the positive aspects of their lives. He always had a good word for everybody, and the great gift of offering a smile to all he met. What I have always admired in him was his deep respect for each person he encountered, both personally and professionally. Dad loved organizing parties of all kinds and he always invited lots of people. What gave him joy was seeing people happy. In these festive and lighthearted occasions he enjoyed playing the actor and quick-change artist, improvising fun and self-deprecating scenes, making everybody laugh endlessly. He had a talent for making the most serious people laugh, the ones who never let themselves go. His laughter was outstanding, it penetrated straight into people’s hearts. For my brother and me our dad was not a superhero, but rather the perfect example we should follow throughout our lives. During his illness, in those moments of pain, I had the chance to discover another aspect of my dad. I discovered a man of great faith, able to accept everything as the will and manifestation of God. His inner calm was the balsam that was able to soften the anger I felt for what was happening to him. The fact that this damned sickness had struck him was, for me, unacceptable. It was not possible for such a good, happy, and sunny person to be so cruelly condemned in the prime of his life. What was the meaning of all this? Why all the pain? Why was all this FOREWORD - 15
1 OSTRICH YOGA
“Life is Love, rejoice in it. Life is a challenge, face it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a dream, make it come true. Life is a game, play it. - Sathya Sai Baba
Since I was a child my life has always been quite strange, curious, and, I would say, rather unpredictable. I have always admired the people who have the extraordinary ability to plan everything in their lives, like deciding a year in advance where they will go on vacation, or planning every day of the week down to the smallest detail. I have never been able to plan in advance what I would do with my life. On the contrary, the most extraordinary moments in my life have always arrived without me planning or foreseeing them, like when Sara and I decided to get married or the birth of our two daughters Matilde and Sofia.
Throughout my life I have always been attracted to the mysteries of the universe, the unknown, and magic. Still today I am astounded by somebody who can surprise me with a magic trick. In fact, illusions have always been a passion of mine. When I was a child, instead of playing soccer with the other kids I preferred to stay alone in my room reading books on illusions and on the history of prestidigitation. I spent hours in my room day dreaming in front of posters of the greatest illusionists in history, and in my heart I dreamed of becoming a great magician. My intense curiosity about the world of magic led me to the point of looking into the phenomena of parapsychology. When I was fourteen, I borrowed a book on esotericism and alchemy from the town library. When dad found me with that book he immediately took me back to the library to return it, making me solemnly promise that I would never read that kind of book again. What I was most interested in was reading the biographies of extraordinary people who, through the power of their minds, were able to enchant thousands of people who came to theaters in the 1900s to watch the shows of these mind raiders. Of them all, the one who fascinated me the most was Wolf Messing, a man endowed with great psychic powers who had predicted some important facts in history, like the end of Adolf Hitler’s reign. In fact, because of this revelation, Hitler had put a bounty on the famous clairvoyant. Both Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud had met young Messing and admired him for his supernatural abilities. Reading Wolf Messing’s biography, I found out that he had left 22 - ALWAYS BE HAPPY
his body on 8 November 1974, curiously the date of my birth. When I was a child I enjoyed putting on magic shows during my friends’ birthday parties. I remember that one day I was invited to perform at a church party, in the oratory theater. At the beginning of the show I was completely frozen by fear. In front of me there were hundreds of people, and my parents sitting in the front row. After overcoming the initial wave of embarrassment, I was able to entertain the public with a series of magic tricks I had learned reading Silvan’s book. At the end of the show my mom and dad stood up to applaud me. Right then I decided that when I was big I would be an illusionist. My teen years were very happy as I studied the more important aspects of the magical arts. I studied the books for hours, and on the weekends I took advantage of any occasion to perform in front of a live public, practicing new tricks of prestidigitation. When I was seventeen, I debuted as a professional illusionist on a cruise ship, and from then on for more than 20 years I continued to live the dream that I had had as a child: transform my greatest passion into a profession. In those years I was particularly fascinated by research on psychic and mental powers. One day I asked dad to take me to Padua so I could find some new books on the subject. I remember that we entered into a three-story library stocked with thousands of books, all waiting for me. I wanted to spend all night in there. I loved the magical atmosphere that you could feel among all those books. After taking a look through the various shelves, I stopped in front of 1 - OSTRICH YOGA - 23
2 INDIA
“You are looking for joy and peace in distant places. But the source of joy is in your heart. The paradise of peace is in you. - Sri Sathya Sai Baba
More than 15 years had passed since my first trip to India and I had lost count of the number of times I had flown to India to physically reach my Master. Being able to see him, during his darshans, was a great blessing for me. His smile could assuage the wounds inflicted by the experiences of life. His glance could transform me inside, and when I was fortunate enough to listen to him when he spoke or to speak to him, his melodious voice had a calming effect on my mind. Each trip that I had taken had increased my awareness as I sought happiness. India, the ancient Bharat, has always been the cradle of the most ancient traditions and religions. In this country, the devotion of its population has allowed for the spread and conservation of the
ancient Vedic truths. During my studies in India I had known and learned the basic principles of the law of karma and reincarnation, and I had learned more about the importance of being a vegetarian. Studying this ancient knowledge, I felt as if I was rediscovering the user manual of life. In light of these revelations, the experiences I had gone through in my life started to acquire a completely different meaning. There was an explanation for everything, even for what I had labeled as misfortune, a term that, by the way, I have forever eliminated from my vocabulary. As in my previous trips, I was sure that this journey would also add some important experiences to my spiritual journey. For the very first time I felt a special call from the Master, as if he were waiting for me. I knew that Sai Baba communicated directly with his devotees, establishing a heart-to-heart link. He was always available for anybody. All were equal for him, whether they be prime ministers or young students, approaching them personally without intermediaries, speaking directly with them as a father would with his children. While I was flying to Bangalore, I prayed to have the opportunity of speaking to him personally, or at least being able to deliver him the letter in which my wife and I had detailed our family’s life project. When the pilot’s voice informed the passengers that we were about to land, my heart started to pound more strongly. Outside the international airport in Bangalore, the taxi driver that I had known for more than 15 years was waiting for me. As soon 40 - ALWAYS BE HAPPY
as he saw me he came and hugged me. After drinking a masala chai, the spiced Indian tea, we left the airport and, after getting through the busy traffic in Bangalore, traveled to the state of Andhra Pradesh. The roads in the South of India had been asphalted and traveling was much easier than just a few years before. During my first trips the only taxis available were the famous Ambassador cars that had no air conditioning. They didn’t seem to have any shock absorbers either. During those trips, when the car ran into a pothole in the dirt road the impact was so great that your head would slam against the roof of the car, and often the taxi driver had to get out to push the car out of the crater. It was as if those uncomfortable journeys to reach Puttaparthi were part of the spiritual journey for we Westerners accustomed to only the best comforts. It was during these car trips that the virtues of patience and forbearance were put to the test. Now being able to travel comfortably in a fully equipped Japanese car, crossing through Indian villages on paved roads, was an unimaginable luxury compared to the experiences I had had in the past. Like all Indian drivers, my driver was an expert in avoiding lastsecond head-on collisions with other cars and trucks coming in the opposite direction. Though I fully trusted in his ability, I preferred to spend my time in the taxi praying and chanting mantras of protection to Lord Ganesh to arrive safely at my destination. After a two-hour trip we arrived in Puttaparthi, and instead of staying at a hotel I decided to stay in the Ashram. I wanted to enjoy 2 - INDIA - 41
3 MEETING MADAN KATARIA
When you laugh, you change. When you change, the whole world changes with you. - Dr Madan Kataria
Finally the long-awaited day arrived. It was early morning, the sun had not risen yet, and my driver was ready to drive me from Puttaparthi to Devanahalli. I had to arrive on time at the School of Ancient Wisdom, the spiritual center where the founder of Laughter Yoga Dr Madan Kataria would hold the International Laughter Yoga Teacher Training. Before leaving home, I silently thanked Sara, who was still sleeping. For the next five days she would be taking care of our daughters and our home, giving me the chance to have an experience that, as I would discover later, would change the course of my life forever.
As always my driver was smiling. He knew my habits and understood that if I fell asleep in the car he should wake me up when we arrived at our café in Chikkaballapur to have breakfast before reaching Devanahalli. The excitement I was feeling about meeting the founder of Laughter Yoga kept me awake for the whole trip. I took advantage of being awake, looking out the window and enjoying the familiar landscape of my beloved India and its colors, ancient trees and the great expanses of red earth. Slowly the sun started to rise in front of us, and I silently thanked it for this new day. I was so happy about this experience that I told the driver to head on to Bangalore without stopping for breakfast. After a two hour trip I arrived early at the main gate of the School of Ancient Wisdom in Devanahalli. It was like entering the property of a Maharajah surrounded by nature. The keeper invited us through the gate, and soon after entering the property the silence was broken by the sound of laughter coming from the breakfast hall. Having gotten out of the car, I was surprised to see a young Western man running towards me. He had to be well over six feet tall, he had a funny face like that of a clown, and as soon as he reached me he embraced me, laughing as if we had known each other for years, while in reality it was the first time we had ever met. I hugged him back, trying to smile at him, thanking him for his rowdy welcome. The driver, looking baffled at me, said, “Sir, I’ll see you again in five days.” Given the situation, I replied, “Please keep your cell phone on. 64 - ALWAYS BE HAPPY
If I need you I’ll call and you can come and pick me up immediately!” The young Westerner took my bags and accompanied me to his table where other participants from around the world were seated. He said, “Let me introduce you to the Master, Madan Kataria.” I looked at the peaceful face of Dr Kataria. He looked more like a European than an Indian from Mumbai. Shaking his hand, I told him, “I am very happy to meet you. My name is Richard Romagnoli, I’m Italian, but I live here in India, in Puttaparthi.” He smiled at me, making me feel at home. He invited me to have breakfast, sitting next to him. Then he advised the whole group of students to be on time for the start of the lessons. The initial embarrassment and discomfort of the hug with the young German vanished as he began telling me the story of his life. Due to depression that had struck him a few years before he had tried to commit suicide, even though he was being treated medically. He survived, came out of a coma and changed his mental attitude by applying the discipline of Laughter Yoga. He was healed thanks to the daily practice of unconditional laughter. He had arrived from Germany to celebrate and thank Dr Kataria for his recovery. His story moved me deeply and from that day on we became two inseparable laughter buddies. After leaving my luggage in my room, I reached the hall where the training would take place, and soon after all the other participants arrived as well. Dr Kataria welcomed us and introduced himself. Then he asked us all to introduce ourselves by stating our name, nationality, and job, and adding a burst of laughter after every statement. 3 - MEETING MADAN KATARIA - 65
4 LAUGHTER YOGA
Start the day with a smile and end it with a smile. This will remind you that anything you experience during the day can be transformed with your smile. - Richard
Waking up early in the morning and waiting for the first rays of sun to practice unconditional laughter became a habit I would never give up for any reason. Being able to greet the sun practicing laughter meditation allowed me to start the day as I had always wished, with joy and positivity. It had been Madan Kataria who had advised me to practice unconditional laughter for at least 40 days in a row, laughing five minutes a day immediately upon waking up. By repeating this action voluntarily my laughter would become a habit. The more I trained myself to laugh, the more I felt changes
in my mental attitude. I felt that waking up at 5:30 am to practice laughter meditation was improving my life. I was experiencing what Madan had told me one day: “When you will have learned to laugh, you will feel and notice some changes in your life. When you change, your family and the world around you will also benefit from this positive change. You must focus exclusively on the discipline of unconditional laughter. Believe in it and never give up. My life changed the very moment I decided to follow his advice, practicing unconditional laughter. I felt that it was time to let other people experience the benefits of Laughter Yoga, just as Dr Kataria had taught me during his Teacher Training. The first thing I would have to do was open a Laughter Club in Puttaparthi. Sai Baba had left his body a few months earlier and the devotees arriving in the ashram were shocked by the idea that they would not see him as in the past. They could no longer enjoy his physical presence and interactions with him. There was an air of deep sadness in the ashram. For millions of people Sai Baba had been much more than a spiritual Master, and now it was up to his devotees to put into practice his message and his teachings, honoring his presence in everyday life. Even though the Master had always taught by example how important it was not to get attached to the body, it was truly difficult to get used to the idea of no longer being able to honor him in his physical body. Every 80 - ALWAYS BE HAPPY
corner of the ashram evoked the golden times lived in his presence, when one of his glances was enough to bring peace to lost minds. Sai Baba had taught everybody to have joy, to always smile in any circumstance, to honor the Atma, our inner Divinity. For years in his discourses he had repeated that we should not become attached to the body and the form, but to aspire to the formless, the origin of all things. One of the sayings he used to repeat during his darshans was, “Be happy, be happy, be happy.” He repeated it three times, to remind us to be happy in our mind, body, and spirit. I felt that Laughter Yoga could condition me to happiness, without having to wait for times of good fortune to be happy. This practice had entered my life for a precise reason. I was sure that my Spiritual Master would bless my idea of sharing the essence of inner laughter with as many people as I could. One day in the ashram I met a person I had been introduced to by some common friends. He had heard that I wanted to open a Laughter Club in Puttaparthi, and when he saw me he said: “I heard that you have become a Laughter Yoga Teacher and you are looking for a place to hold your meetings. I would like to contribute to your initiative. You should know that a few years ago I built a beautiful concert hall that I called Saraswathi Hall, in honor of the goddess that presides over art and music. If you like, you can hold your Laughter Yoga meetings there. I would be very happy to offer you this space for free. What is the best day for you?” I was astonished by this generous invitation. Not wanting to miss this opportunity, I replied, “I think the best day for the Laughter Club is Sunday, from 10:00 to 11:00 in the morning. I think that 4 - LAUGHTER YOGA - 81
