What is crowd funding and why are we doing it? We at Energize have recently launched our new crowd funding website and some of you may be wondering what crowd funding is and why Energize feel it is a worthwhile thing to do. What is it? For those of you who draw a blank when someone says the term ‘crowd funding’, it is where lots of people donate small sums of money via a website to help someone’s dream become a reality. It’s becoming a very popular way of raising money because it is so easy for people to set up a campaign and for people to donate to it. People often don’t know where to start when looking for funding, or would previously rely on time consuming activities such as holding events, doing raffles, or carrying around a sponsorship form to raise money, however donating to a cause online has become a quick and simple alternative. People are crowd funding to record their music, to build things, make projects happen, to start businesses… You name it, people are using crowd funding to raise the money they need to make it happen. Why are we doing it? The Energize Team are often asked if we can help with funding, be it for individuals, for community groups wanting to provide something to help their community be more active, sports venues needing to make facility improvements, clubs needing to replace or upgrade equipment, coaches needing further training, or teams who are struggling to meet the expenses of travelling to events or competitions around the country. We want to help people’s sporting dreams become a reality by offering them a bespoke crowd funding platform to raise money for whatever it is that they need. Please Turn Over > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Crowd funding continued.. Our crowd funding site http://energizestw.podiumpartners.org/ will allow us to support all manner of good causes by offering them a place to help raise their funds and promoting the fundraising efforts of local people, groups and organisations. Who can raise money using our crowd funding site? Anyone with a good sporting cause can raise money using our crowd funding site; a local sport or community group, club, school, an individual, an athlete, a team, a programme or project, or even an event. The only criteria for any campaign is that the sport(s) being taken part in / funded must be recognised by Sport England (check if your sport is recognised), and that if you are an individual participant wanting to raise money to help you take part in sport that you must be aged 25 or under, although participants with a disability of any age can create a campaign. How do I use the Energize crowd funding site? It’s easy to create a campaign. Submit an application via our crowd funding website and once your page is approved and set up just personalise it with whatever you like e.g. your own pictures, social media feeds etc. When you’re happy with it, you can promote the page to the ‘crowd’ – anyone and everyone who might be interested and who can then share the page with others to create a cascade of publicity, and hopefully donations. We’ve already had interest from an annual community event where the local community get to come and try different activities who would like to raise the money it costs to put on the event by crowd funding, and from a sports club who needs support with sports equipment costs. The sky really is the limit and any great sporting cause is relevant.

Promoting and evaluating walking interventions Environmental changes to key walking routes may be an effective and low cost strategy to increase pedestrians walking levels. Changes to key walking routes were made as part of the ‘Fitter for Walking’ project, managed by Living Streets. Key findings: •14-20 months following the environmental changes, there was a 14.9% increase in overall pedestrian use. •The most common reasons for using the route were to get home, for personal business or shopping, visit friends or family or to get to work. •Pedestrian uptake on newly improved routes may take a long time. •Additional promotional activities to raise awareness of new routes may be essential to increase usage. 100 new artificial pitches for grassroots rugby The RFU is to invest in 100 artificial floodlit pitches for the grassroots game across the country over a four-year period. The investment will fund two types of pitches in locations across the country to ensure maximum access and rugby participation: •60 on rugby club sites to be used by the host club and other local clubs, enabling games to be played and training to be maximised. •40 on community sites with a guaranteed number of hours for use by rugby. Although, there are close to 700 artificial grass pitches in England, rugby can be played on less than 10% of them due to the others not complying with the World Rugby specification for build and performance, which includes criteria such as ball bounce, head impact and carpet joint strength. Of the 10% that are usable, less than 10 are currently located on community rugby club sites. The project will get underway with an initial six of the 60 rugby club pitches aiming to be operational in September 2016. View the full news item
