TaMHS – TeenYoga TeenYoga is delivered to ages 11-18, using Yoga and Mindfulness techniques to help alleviate stress among teens and help them have a healthier and more joyful life. The programme includes playing with postures, breathing exercises and deep relaxation. TaMHS delivered 6 sessions of TeenYoga at Mary Webb School & Science College supported through Sportivate. The 6 sessions have been well received and the group have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. Students say; "I liked doing the partner balances and the relaxing at the end. They helped me to de-stress and feel calm." • "I think that teen yoga could be useful to other teen students in other schools as it took school worries away.“ If you are interested in holding a free trial session (up to 3 sessions) in your secondary school at lunchtime or during the school day please contact tamhs@shropshire.gov.uk > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk
The Daily Mile is Launched! The aim of the Daily Mile is to improve the physical, emotional and social health and wellbeing of children through running or walking one mile every day at primary schools. For three-and-a-half years, all pupils at St Ninians primary in Stirling have walked or run a mile each day. They do so at random times during the day, and despite the rise in childhood obesity across the UK, none of the children at the school are overweight. The daily mile has been so successful that scores of nursery and primary schools across Britain are following suit and getting pupils to get up from their desks and take 15 minutes to walk or run round the school.
See the Healthy Schools Sections for further info on the Daily Mile and resources for schools. Shropshire Public Health are keen to encourage all local primary schools to take up this opportunity. http://thedailymile.co.uk/ > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Tip of the Month from Shropshire Wild Teams! Simon from Shropshire Wild Team shares his map reading tips again this issue. The more common maps used are Ordnance Survey (OS) maps. Grid lines are the straight thin blue lines going across the map and up and down the map. Together, the lines form lots of (grid) squares. Each grid line will have a number in blue. The numbers increase from left to right (eastings) and increase from bottom to top (northings). Put these numbers together correctly and you’ll give a grid reference for an area. First choose the numbers going across. The last number to the left of your chosen area goes first. Then the last number just below your location goes next. So say, 41 and 94. You’ll also need to put two letters first as this will tell you what map you are actually using. You will find these letters in large blue on the corners of the map. Tip of the Month from Shropshire Wild Teams! Continued.. So, SO4194 is a four figure grid reference. Four figure references covers 1km by 1km though. We can add numbers after the eastings and northings to pinpoint where we are more precisely. So after the 41 imagine breaking that square down into another ten equal small spaces. Run your finger along until it is in line with your location. Add that number. Say 415 (the 5 is suggesting half way across the square). Do the same going up. Say 944. You now have a six figure reference. SO415944. This reduces the area to 100m by 100m. You can even go further up to a ten (1mx1m) figure reference. However this would require going back to using GPS as it is too small to break down with fingers on paper maps! Going back to our six figure SO415944, does anyone know where it is? If you haven’t the correct map go to http://www.gridreferencefinder.com/ to find out. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Ofsted expectations afPE's Chair, Mike Crichton has developed a document that outlines Ofsted's expectations in 140 words. The intention of the impact statement is for schools to reflect on their provision and determine whether it ‘fits them’ and if it does, for them to be able to identify evidence that supports the impact statements. The 140 words are collated from each of the most relevant criteria in the Ofsted Evaluation Schedule: Outcomes, Leadership & Management, Quality of Teaching, Learning & Assessment and Personal Development, Behaviour & Welfare. In theory if a school can demonstrate that their PESS provision fits the statement then they should be goodoutstanding and should definitely apply for recognition through the afPE Quality Mark process!
