It was a slam dunk for inclusion at the recent School Games competition Once again the Shrewsbury Sports Village was the location for another exciting School Games competition on Wednesday 3rd February. This time it was the chance for KS3 & KS4 students to show off their talent at Inclusive Zone Basketball. Inclusive Zone Basketball also known as IZB is played in teams of 4 on a basketball court split in to 3 zones. 2 players using sports wheelchairs play in the central zone with 1 ambulant or non-disabled player per wing zone. This competition had 8 teams from across the county with players of varying mobility and learning abilities competing against each other to take the title of the School Games Level 3 IZB champions! Inclusive Zone Basketball continued.
Harry Cade Youth Sport Manager said “throughout the competition it was clear to see the six School Games values being brought to life with all players and teams showing huge amounts of determination, respect, selfbelief, teamwork, honesty & passion. Each team gave their all, and they, as well as their schools should be extremely proud of their achievements”. As with all competitions there had to be a winner and after a nail biting final game this year’s IZB champions were Sundorne School. The final positions were: 1st Sundorne School, 2nd Burton Borough School (A), 3rd Burton Borough School (B), 4th Telford Park School, 5th Madeley Academy (B), joint 6th Thomas Adams (B) & Madeley Academy (A), and 8th Thomas Adams (A).
All teams that competed now have the opportunity to take part in the North West Midlands regional finals taking place at Wolverhampton University at the start of April. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival – Winter 2016 In addition to the hundreds of participants, there were also over 180 amazing young leaders, taking on the roles of team managers, officials and event managers. Their involvement and support during the two festival days are key to making the events run smoothly. Prior to the festival this year, young people were given the opportunity to compete in a ‘School Games Has Got Talent’ competition, with the opportunity for the winning acts to perform at the opening ceremonies. The 7 chosen winning acts showcased great talent to get the festival days off to an inspiring start. Also present to inspire participants were GB Judo player Kelly Edwards, GB 400m athlete Kelly Massey, and 2 local students who attended the 2015 National Level 4 School Games; Sophie Paterson (wheelchair basketball player) and Hannah Knight (swimmer). As always at the Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival the standard of competition was very high, with participants showing determination and team work. Congratulations go to East Shropshire who were overall area winners on both the primary and secondary days. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk
Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival – Winter 2016 In the months leading up to the Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival there have been hundreds of level 2 competitions held in the 6 different School Games Areas to decide what teams and individuals will qualify to represent their area in the level 3 winter festival. The hard work done by the School Games Organisers for each of the areas is vital in ensuring all schools get the opportunity to compete in School Games with the hope of making it through to the Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival. Chris Jew (East Shropshire), Emma Tomkins (North Shropshire), Denise Lee & Liz Kitcher (Shrewsbury), Kristien Wood (South Shropshire), Sally Harris (Telford & Wrekin Burton Borough) and Frankie Williams (Telford & Wrekin Langley) all ensure that there is a calendar of sporting competitions that enables young people the opportunity to be involved in numerous sports with the chance to compete against teams from the other areas of the county. These important qualifying competitions are ongoing with many already taking place in preparation for the 2016 Summer Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival being held on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th July. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Shropshire Handball Foundry Since January 2016 Shropshire Handball Foundry (SHF), the delivery partner of England Handball, introduced the sport across Shropshire to 6 schools: Belvidere, Priory, Grange, Sundorne, Southall schools and 2 colleges: TCAT and SCAT. SHF has also successfully run an adult session at HLC with the hope to turn it into their first Telford Hub Club.
Over 600 pupils have now tried Handball. SHF has just started their first Handball Academy at the Grange Sports Centre. The Academy will run on Mondays, 5-6pm for Years 7 & 8 and Thursdays, 5-6pm for Years 9, 10 & 11. The first session is free and each subsequent costs ÂŁ2. All abilities are welcome! SHF is keen to raise participation and awareness and build it at the grass root level. They are currently providing some free sessions for primary schools and offering a 6 week package to them. The aim of the package is to deliver the sport and provide training to the teachers which will enable them to carry on delivering the sport independently. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk
Shropshire Handball Foundry, continued Handball cuts across many strands of physical literacy. It is an ideal sport for primary PE with throwing, catching, balance, running, jumping and, crucially, communication elements – skills transferable to many other sports and also to the classroom. The sport is simple and adaptive, suitable for indoors and out with minimal equipment. SHF other objective is to provide Talent Pathways to talented players and SHF have already seen some great potential in Shropshire. Handball is an emerging sport and some talented children & young people can make it very fast to a representative team. SHF are currently in the process of setting up an U16 county team and will be holding trials in the near future. Shropshire’s children centres team up with local social enterprise to combat childhood obesity Shropshire Council’s children’s centres have teamed up with local social enterprise Lovelyland to help combat obesity in young children, and support local community resources. The partnership has come together to launch a scheme in response to findings from Public Health England’s National Child Measurement Programme, who highlighted an issue with overweight and obesity levels in 0-5 year olds in Shropshire. The Green Kitchen Project is a dynamic and fun introduction to food growing for young children and their families. The project hopes to provide opportunities for our youngest children to engage with food through a collection of informative and structured activities, which are all linked to either sowing, growing or harvesting food. Figures show that in some parts of Shrewsbury more than 10% of children in Reception classes are obese. This trend almost doubles for those children weighed in Year 6. Tip of the Month from Shropshire Wild Teams! Simon from Shropshire Wild Team shares his map reading tips. It seems satnavs or GPS (Global Positioning System) are now the standard way of finding where you are or where you want to go. This has eradicated the traditional relationship breakdown between driver and map reader/navigator during hot summer road trips. However we in the Wild Teams still feel it is good form to know how to use a map. Firstly the two common sizes or scales are 1:50,000 and 1:25,000. The larger of the scales will give you more land to look at, while the smaller will cover less ground but give you more detail. On the map you’ll see lots of different symbols. Don’t worry about these too much there’ll be a key telling you what they mean. What is handy to know are the contour lines. The contour lines are the thin orangey wavy bendy lines. Each line is joining up an area of land of equal height. Every now and then you’ll spot a number breaking the line. This is the height in meters above sea level. They will be either 5 or 10 meters apart depending if it is respectively a 1:25 or 1:50 scale map. They tell you if you can expect a gentle stroll in your flip flops or if you should take a rope and a harness. The closer together they are the steeper the ground the further apart the flatter it will be. Compare the map to the real landscape for experience to begin to interpret accurately. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Everybody Active Everyday – Primary School Event held in Shrewsbury A recent event was held in Shrewsbury to help primary schools plan and develop a whole school approach to 'Everybody active everyday' (EAED). Miranda Ashwell (Physical Activity Lead at Help2Change) introduced the half-day event, held at Shrewsbury Training Centre. Miranda shared some daunting statistics on child inactivity; the current figures reveal 4 in 10 children are physically inactive, many children who are active don’t achieve the recommended amount of physical activity for 5-18 year olds. Sam Scott, Head of Market Drayton Infant & Nursery school, talked about the practicalities of EAED action planning for schools, sharing tips to help other schools in attendance.
Emma Peace (Project Manager from Help2Change), overviewed Shropshire’s Early Years: ‘Move More’ programme, which has been independently evaluated by the BHFNC. The programme involved physical activity training for early years practitioners, the possibility of providing this training again was also discussed. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk
Everybody Active Everyday – Primary School Event held in Shrewsbury, continued Harry Cade, Youth Sport Manager at Energize STW promoted the free support available to complement the primary school sport premium, including Active School Consultations. Harry also spoke about Me and My Pupil Insight software which provides a series of online survey tools and reporting mechanisms to capture and interpret pupil’s views. Alice Cruttwell, Public Health Curriculum Advisor at Shropshire Council, made sure attendees weren’t sedentary during the event, demonstrating how classroom exercises can help engage pupils. Alice also endorsed the Move More resource for Shropshire Primary Schools, a 'toolkit' of practical ideas to help them confidently communicate and deliver healthy eating messages and build in physical activity. Creating Active School Environments Creating Active School Environments is a new two page evidence brief to find ways to help adolescents to be more active and sit less. Produced by the Centre for Diet and Activity Research, this brief summarises how the school environment can influence physical activity levels. Key findings: • The school environment is more than the physical space – it includes behaviours, policies and culture. • The literature supports the importance of this broadbased approach to physical activity promotion in schools. However, good intervention evidence at secondary school is currently lacking. • Schools wanting to increase physical activity should think beyond PE, consult with students, address gender, ethnic and socio-economic diversity and develop strong leadership to support physical activity culture. Modeshift STARS: The National School Travel Awards Scheme. Year 1 Delivery Report In September 2012, the Modeshift STARS system was launched nationwide to authorities outside of London. The scheme was created to support the development of School Travel Plans and reward schools over three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) for achieving modal shift to sustainable modes of travel. To join Modeshift STARS, local authorities were required to pay an annual fee and ÂŁ30 for every school that they wished to add to the system. The scheme was run entirely by volunteers of the Modeshift Management Board. On 6th November 2014, the Department for Transport announced a support grant of ÂŁ184,000 over 2-years to expand the Modeshift STARS scheme to every school in England outside of London.
