Impact Measurement Tool ‘Sportworks’ Sportworks, developed by sported for development charity Sported and Substance, is designed to demonstrate the impact of sports projects involving young people (under 25 years). The tool is able to calculate the impact and societal cost savings against the seven most significant social policy areas associated with sport for development work. These are; antisocial behaviour, educational performance, attendance and behaviour at school, substance misuse, health and wellbeing, obesity and NEET status. Through using the tool, Energize are able to assess the degree of protection the sports project is providing against the seven risk factors and in turn calculate social cost savings as a result of the positive behaviour chance experienced by participants. Energize have created two case studies using the Sportworks tool: Sportworks Case Study - Golf Satellite Club Sportworks Case Study - Substance Misuse Football The Sportworks Tool is free to use for members of Sported, visit http://www.sported.org.uk/sportworks for more information. Blog: #BeActive: Counting down to the European Week of Sport Ahead of next month's European Week of Sport, Leigh Thompson, Policy Adviser, looks in more detail at what the week entails and how national governing bodies can get involved. Those of you that use social media regularly might have come across the hashtag #BeActive lately. The first ever European Week of Sport (EWoS) takes place between 7th and 13th September 2015 and, as the name suggests, its aim is to promote sport and physical activity across Europe. The week is intended for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. With a particular focus on grassroots initiatives, it is hoped the week will encourage Europeans to participate in sport on a regular basis and create opportunities in peoples’ everyday lives to exercise more. The rationale behind the week will be familiar to UK readers. Physical activity and participation in sport is either stagnating or declining in many EU Member States with the attendant negative impacts on health, wellbeing and productivity. The EWoS is therefore a response to this growing problem and, in addition, it is hoped that the week will help to foster greater awareness of the role of sport in tackling discrimination and intolerance. How is the week structured and organised? While EWoS is a European Commission-led initiative, the week is being organised in each Member State by national coordinators. In the UK the coordinating bodies are the Home Sports Councils: Sport England, Sport Wales, Sport Scotland and Sport NI. View the full blog

Share your views on news articles featuring active disabled people The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), supported by Sport England, is embarking on a new multi-stage research project. The aim is to improve public perceptions of disabled people in sport and activity by supporting the media, and those who interact with it, to use approaches which position disabled people more positively. To do this, EFDS has created a survey, asking a number of questions regarding the way active disabled people are portrayed in local and national news channels. They appreciate some people with certain impairments require another format or support to answer. If this occurs, please email or call Emma Spring (details below) to arrange a personal interview. Access the on-line survey To find out more about this project, please email Marketing and Communications Manager, Sarah Marl or call 07764 291671.

Blog: "There is a format of golf for everyone" This week Disability Manager of England Golf, Jamie Blair discusses the steps his sport continues to take in order to encourage participation and make golf more accessible. Jamie’s blog: So here we are in August, summer has been with us for a couple of months and golfers have been making the most of opportunities to play from first light to last. Let me start by saying that golf isn’t all about the 2015 Open Championship that you may have seen or heard about in July, and it isn’t all about the Ryder Cup, as great as both these major events are. There is a format of golf for everyone, whether it is championship golf over 18 holes, nine holes with friends or even Urban Golf, which I was lucky enough to volunteer for in May at the Olympic Park. In my role as Disability Manager I have been working with our partners, the Golf Foundation and the Professional Golfers Association, to make golf more inclusive for Deaf and disabled people. At the heart of the game of golf is a great handicap system, which allows players of any ability, whether they have an impairment or not, to play against each other fairly. I truly believe it ours one of the most inclusive sports out there. View the full blog

Latest News and Updates What roles can technology play in promoting community physical activity? A recent roundtable discussion began by recognising the considerable challenges inherent in encouraging some communities to be active, and identifying that technology to date has only gone so far. The roundtable discussion also suggested that technology has unique strengths. It is particularly good at: • Continually setting new goals and challenges, which are central to maintaining motivation and engagement • Creating virtual communities, especially where no actual communities currently exist • Providing communities with accurate information, which can be both highly targeted and very widely disseminated • Enabling data analysis and data mining, which can both measure success – an essential if programmes are to be accurately evaluated and fine-tuned – and unlock insights into why people do and don’t engage. England Golf Trust Launched to support young players A new charitable trust, supported by England Golf, has been launched and will provide grants and bursaries for boys and girls who need financial help to play the game. The aim of the England Golf Trust is to help young people, aged under 21, or in full-time education. The funds are not just for elite players but very much for ‘ordinary’ golfers – those who in the future will make up the heart and soul of a golf club. By providing this support, we will create ‘champions’ not only on the golf course but in society; to foster a life-long sporting habit and to allow young people to develop life skills closely associated with the game including confidence, self-esteem and integrity. To ensure the future well-being of golf we need to attract young people to the game and to give encouragement and support to those who do take it up. The England Golf Trust is committed to this aim and to identifying and supporting future club members or players at whatever level they aspire to. The method of achieving this is through the awarding of annual grants and bursaries. http://www.englandgolf.org/page.aspx?sitesectionid=1261&sitesectiontitl e=Womens+Golf+Trust&preview=1
