Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training: “I enjoyed the practical Session” Last year, members of staff from Severnside Housing, based Shrewsbury, Shropshire, enjoyed the three hours of practical training plus online resources that make up Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training. Under the guidance of an experienced tutor from sports coach UK and organised by Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, the workshops were a product of a new relationship forged between the not-for-profit company and the County Sports Partnership. One participant, Community Development Officer Ejiro Abboh, tells the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) why he took the training and how he has found it beneficial.

Ejiro’s testimonial: I attended the training on behalf of Severnside Housing. The workshop was busy, with up to 20 people also in attendance from a variety of different backgrounds. As I am involved in supporting football delivery, I wanted to attend the training in order to learn and develop new ways of making football inclusive to everyone, regardless of ability. I expected to learn different methods that could be used in making football more inclusive. I wanted to gain as much knowledge as possible on how I could make things easier for participants to take part in sporting activities without singling them out because of their ability.

Young people’s attitudes to activity Sport England has released research providing new insights into behaviours and motivations of young people aged 14-25 years. Under the Skin collected data from 1,997 young people about their personalities, behaviours, attitudes and aspirations and used this to define six broad personas. The insight reveals that each persona thinks and feels differently about sport and exercise. Practical advice is included on attracting their attention, delivering activities in the right environment and encouraging the group to stay involved and take part more often. Six key groups: • Sport enthusiasts are mad about sport. Their friends and family are sporty. Their heroes are sport stars. Sport is part of who they are. • Confident intellectuals are driven, focused and highly motivated. They are much more enthusiastic about music, gaming or computing than getting active. • Ambitious self-starters aren’t just active because they enjoy it. They see sport as another means to achieving their goals. Typically well educated and from wealthier backgrounds than other groups, these young people want to have it all. • Cautious introverts are happiest spending time with their intimate group of close-knit friends, or alone. • Thoughtful improvers are motivated, mature and independent. You might bump into them at the cinema or out shopping and when they're at home, they’ll probably be listening to music, reading. • Everyday youth are easy going, relaxed and tend to be happy in their own skin. They’re generally satisfied with their achievements and appearance so may seem less driven than other groups. Access all the Sport England information on this research

New Whistleblowing Advice Line NSPCC have launched a new Whistleblowing Advice Line to provide support to employees wishing to raise concerns over how child protection issues are being handled in their own or other organisations.

You can reach the Whistleblowing Advice Line on 0800 028 0285, or find out more about it on their website. The advice line offers an alternative route if whistleblowing internally is difficult or professionals have concerns about how matters are being handled.

Blog: Get social and engage your membership Ahead of the Alliance's workshop; Using Social Networks to Boost Your Membership Performance, Rik Courtney, MemNet Associate for Social Networks, explains why it's no longer acceptable to ignore social media engagement with your members. The business world is only just waking up to the power of social media, but not nearly enough. With over half the world’s population online and a staggering 2.3 billion people on social media (not to mention the billion more than access social uniquely through a mobile device), the audience for marketing online is almost incomprehensibly huge. The smartphone is really the key element here too, since it couldn’t be better suited for sports.. View the full blog

Free event to place the focus on arguments surrounding anti-doping An international expert on the management of drugs in sport is visiting University Centre Shrewsbury to share his insights and pose the question of ‘Does Anti-Doping Do More Harm Than Good?’ Dr Jason Mazanov will travel from the other side of the world to discuss his research in this field with students, staff and the community. People are invited to hear from Dr Mazanov on anti-doping policy and join the debate at Guildhall, Shrewsbury, on Thursday February 25. The event is free and runs from 6pm to 7.30pm. Dr Mazanov, from the University of New South Wales, Australia, said: “The World Anti-Doping Code was introduced to protect the integrity of sport in 2003. “The recent scandals engulfing the International Association of Athletics Federations add to evidence indicating that the anti-doping stance and policy have done little to arrest doping, and consequently protect the integrity of sport. “Instead, anti-doping has created new harms to the credibility of sport, from governance failures that exclude athletes from decision-making through to discrimination against women, children and non-elite sport. “This raises the question whether anti-doping can protect sport’s reputation and principles, or a different approach to either drug control or the integrity of sport is needed.” Dr Mazanov has developed a strong interest in the role of performance enhancement more broadly, with his research spanning more than a decade, and a special interest in so-called cognitive enhancing drug use in education. To book places at the public lecture asking ‘Does Anti-Doping Do More Harm Than Good?’ go to http://publicanti-dopinglecture.eventbrite.co.uk or call 01743 297185. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Go swimming for National Heart Month Keeping physically active is one of the most important and effective ways to reduce the chance of developing CVD, as well as eating a healthy diet. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for this, and it works to combat all forms of CVD which affect the heart and blood vessels. These include high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks and the narrowing of the arteries. Swimming helps you to maintain control over your cholesterol levels. The fat burning properties of swimming for 30 minutes increases your chances of reducing dangerous cholesterol, like Very Low Density and Low Density Lipoproteins, which are known to cause high cholesterol levels in the blood. Swimming boosts your metabolism, which means that 30 minutes in the pool is worth between 45 minutes to an hour of land based exercise. This raises good cholesterol levels, as well as helping you to maintain a healthy weight. View the full news item
