New Crowd Funding Platform Energize has launched a new innovative funding scheme for the benefit of those playing and involved in sport in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. In association with Podium Partners, Energize want to help local young and disabled people to develop their potential and to be able to support clubs looking for new equipment or facilities. Energize offer the opportunity for the local community sports organisations and athletes to promote their campaign on the crowdfunding website, enabling them to raise funds by bringing their project to the attention of the wider public and businesses.
Energize are now welcoming applications to register campaigns on the site from local athletes aged up to 25, disabled athletes of any age, or projects looking to help either of these two groups. The site will go live with all campaigns in January when it officially launches to the public. Working with a charity partner allows donations to be eligible for Gift Aid which increases the value of each donation by reclaiming the basic rate of tax on the donation at no extra cost. This could convert every £10 donated to as much as £12.50. Chris Child, Chief Executive of Energize says “It’s a great new initiative and we have already had a really positive response from people who want to register their campaigns on the site. We would like to have a wide variety of campaigns, from a wide range of sports, ready to go live on the site ready for the main public launch in January and would encourage people to apply to register now.” To apply now and for more information email karel@podiumpartners.org or call 07917 236619 / To apply to create a campaign please visit http://energizestw.podiumpartners.org/

Backing the Best The rising cost of becoming a sports star has led to some of England’s top up-and-coming talent dropping out of sport altogether. Research carried out by the charity SportsAid shows athletes and their families are paying, on average, £6,200 a year to fund their child's sporting ambitions. Backing The Best – Sport Englands ground-breaking scheme that will commit £5.5 million of National Lottery funding over four years – will support the families of the next Bradley Wiggins, Jessica Ennis-Hill or Ellie Simmonds who might feel competitive sport is otherwise out of their financial reach. SportsAid will be working with coaches and national governing bodies of sport to identify the athletes for whom an award could make a big difference. Find out more here

Reach Campaign Reach, a new campaign focussing on women in coaching has been officially launched by sports coach UK. Reach has been created to raise awareness and inspire more women to get into coaching as well as encourage current women coaches to develop their skills further. Targeting women of all ages and backgrounds Reach reinforces the messages that coaching keeps you active, can be a sociable activity and is a way of giving back to your community and sport. All this whilst being a role model to encourage others into sport. The campaign has been created because women are currently underrepresented in coaching. Research has shown that women do want to coach, providing the environment is right. However, sport is still regarded as a gendered activity which strongly favours men. Join the campaign, find information and tips on how you can get involved by visiting www.reachintocoaching.co.uk. Also follow on Twitter- @ReachCoaches If you are inspired by Reach, Energize are currently running a programme called Women Make Coaching offering one to one tailored support to new and existing coaches along their coaching journey. Research to Develop Sporting Experiences Why do people play sport? Where do they play sport? And who helps them? These are some of the questions SCUK have set out to answer when they launched their survey of sport participants We know that how people play sport is changing. While clubs continue to play a central role there are more people taking part in different activities often on their own or with friends - especially adults who we are interested in with this survey.
This research wants to find out who is helping people enjoy their sport, that’s why we use the strapline, People Helping People. Once we know who is helping we want to understand what they do and how important this is to participants. take the survey here

SCUK Research Update Asking good questions and games based activity The questions a coach asks can have a major influence on how much their players or athletes learn. This summary of a recent journal article shows how theories of learning can be applied by coaches in a Games-based Approach to stretch learning beyond what players can achieve on their own. Understanding naturalistic decision making in coaching How do individuals in high-profile or high-pressure environments make decisions at key moments? Is it purely intuition, or is there a more advanced cognitive process taking place that others in similar roles could learn from? New research from a team of academics in America and the UK argues that in high-performance sports coaching, the latter view is true. Helping players cope with the stress of injury When a player experiences an injury like this, it can be a very stressful time. The question is, how do coaches help their players manage the stress in these situations? This summary, based on new research from academics in America, provides a range of strategies that coaches can use to actively help players alleviate the stress caused by sporting injuries.
