Insight New report: the wider impact of play initiatives The report presents evidence to build the case for improving the play opportunities of children and young people. Its focuses on children of school age, and on free play opportunities that takes place outdoors. A case study example from the report: Playground improvements (including a naturalistic play space and new all-weather ball pitch) at a primary school in Glasgow showed a significant decrease in playtime accidents, injuries and bullying. The overall number of incidents fell from 130 in a two-week baseline period to eight incidents in a comparable period after the intervention (based on monitoring reports by playground staff ). Teacher assessments showed improvements across a range of classroom learning and behaviour issues, including: punctuality, settling time, mood, concentration in class, attainment levels, quality of social interaction with other pupils and the teacher, outdoor learning and incidents of difficult behaviour. Pedometer data showed a significant increase in physical activity levels (Groves and McNish 2011). Download a copy here

Insight Why encourage physical activity? • The physical fitness of children is declining by up to 9% per decade ( Annual Report of the Chief Medical Officer 2009 ) • Physical activity levels have fallen over time: nationally, 23% of 2-15 year olds were achieving recommended levels of physical activity in 2008 compared to 18% in 2012 (Childhood physical activity factsheet ) Academic benefits of physical activity • Physical activity has a positive effect on pupils’ behaviour and concentration leading to enhanced academic achievements. • Physical activity enhances children and young teenagers’ ability to learn and help them to grow up healthily. ( Engaging children and young people in physical activity - The White Paper ) • Students' participation in sporting activities could increase numeracy scores, on average, by 8% above that of nonparticipants (all other things being equal). • Underachieving young people who participate in extra-curricular learning activities linked to organised sport improve their numeracy and transferable skills. These findings apply to both primary and secondary aged school children. ( Understanding the impact of engagement in culture and sport: A systematic review of the learning impacts for young people )
