Seminars will cover engaging and understanding your local community, developing a funding strategy (including writing applications, fund raising & attracting sponsorship), understanding need & demand (including writing sports development plan) and developing & managing a project; dealing with on-going challenges. Resources Sport England – Accessing Schools toolkit According to Active Places data, schools, colleges and other educational institutions are home to: 76% of sports halls 73% of artificial grass pitches 29% of swimming pools 52% of grass pitches in England This means that a lot of the country’s sports facilities lie empty in the evening and at weekends, whilst at the same time many sports clubs and teams are desperately crying out for somewhere to play. Birmingham pilot - the key issues Here are the top six issues we've encountered when opening up schools for community sport: • Lack of confidence in developing a sustainable business model • Concerns regarding liability and responsibilities • Need to limit access to the entire school site • Issues linked to hire charges and processes associated with PFI contracts • Limited capacity in schools to take on a dedicated community use remit • Knowing where to find the clubs and user groups to use the school site View the toolkit

Forest Schools Shropshire Council has exemplar woodland Forest School sites across the county, staffed by qualified Forest School leaders. Shropshire Council greatly subsidises the cost of the sessions, with settings only having to pay a small fee and the cost of their transport to and from the sites. What are the benefits of Forest Schools? • Children still follow the national curriculum, but in an outdoor context • Learning/ teaching strategies are designed to raise self-esteem, develop confidence, independence, language and communication skills • The natural world stimulates their desire to learn and discover. We all learn better when we have a real interest in what we are doing • Many children and young people benefit from a practical element to their learning • A refreshing new approach to desk bound learning – reduces sedentary behaviour and children enjoy being physically active outdoors Click here for more information forestschool@shropshire.gov.uk 01743 254518
