Schools recognised for delivering nationally acclaimed health and well-being programme A ‘thank you’ celebration event for selected schools involved in the Shropshire’s Respect Yourself Eat Better, Move More, Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) programme was held at Shirehall on Thursday 21 May 2015. The programme supports schools to deliver age-appropriate, up-to-date lessons to help pupils keep themselves healthy, happy and safe. The programme provides lesson plans, resources and works with parents and school staff so that they feel confident about how to address health issues in a positive and co-ordinated way. The event follows the recent Pamela Sheridan Awards, where Shropshire Council’s Public Health team was a voted-for finalist for its curriculum work with local primary schools. School Travel Plans School Travel Plans are important for the following reasons: – Promote sustainable and safer travel to the whole school community – Reduce the number of cars, congestion and pollution – Improve relations with neighbours/local residents – Coordinate leaving time/taxi collection to reduce confusion and facilitate a calmer and safer beginning to the journey home – Encourage staff, pupils and their families to be more active and develop confidence to travel independently – Improve accessibility on and around the school site – Reduce a school’s carbon footprint, so improving the image of the school in terms of environmental credentials Reducing car use may not be realistic for many special education needs (SEN) schools, some of the students will have taxi transport as part of their statement needs. Buddying or independent travel training to achieve an increase in active travel, and different learning difficulties will determine the focus/content of the travel plan. Big Lottery’s Awards for All grant programme could be a source of funding for aspects of the travel plan which fit with their criteria.
