Shropshire Sailing Club bids to get County’s Kids Sailing as Club gets OnBoard More local youngsters than ever have the chance to get into sailing after Shropshire Sailing Club signed up to OnBoard, the flagship kids’ grassroots scheme run by sailing’s national governing body, the RYA. RYA OnBoard provides low cost sailing opportunities for school and youth groups, enabling kids aged 8-18 to learn to sail. John Ridgers, Shropshire SC Training Principal, explains: “However well a sailing club can present itself to a local school or youth organisation, being part of a scheme that has been designed and promoted by its National Governing Body, and is delivered in annually inspected training centres by RYA recognised instructors, indicates a high quality of training in a safe and inspiring environment..” Shropshire SC already has affiliated membership links with a number of local schools including Ellesmere College, Oswestry School, Moreton Hall, Packwood Haugh and Lakelands Academy. Any local schools and youth groups interested in getting involved in OnBoard at Shropshire SC should contact training@shropshiresailingclub.co.uk or for more information about Shropshire SC visit www.shropshiresailingclub.co.uk - to learn about OnBoard visit www.rya.org.uk/go/onboard > 01743 453495 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk
Tip of the Month from Shropshire Wild Teams! Simon’s latest tip of the month for budding outdoorsmen and women is all about wind. A bit breezy today isn’t it? In Britain the wind can be affected by different factors such as topography (shape of the land) and the seasons. The direction of the wind in Britain can vary considerably. However Britain’s average wind direction is South, South Westerly or Westerly (wind is named by the direction it comes from). Take time to notice the general wind direction each time you travel through an area. Knowing an area’s dominant wind direction can help you estimate your direction of travel just by feeling the wind on your face. You may also notice trees in exposed spots leaning to one side? This can also indicate the dominant wind direction. Has anyone got a torch..? It’s getting dark, how much light is left? Hold your hand up to the sun, palm facing you, fingers outstretched. Place the your index finger just below the sun. Count how many fingers there are until a finger reaches the horizon. Each finger is 15 minutes. So, four fingers between the sun and the horizon will be 1 hour before sunset. If the sun is high, hold both hands, one on top of the other! > 01743 453495 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

They prefer applicants that have raised part of the funding themselves. They usually support projects, but can also support individuals if they have a referee. THE LAUNCH OF ACTIVE ALFIE Welcome to the easiest, most innovative way for parents to find local kids’ activity providers online for free. Active Alfie is a new beta search engine, which aims to get kids active. Founder Joel James discovered the idea of developing a kids’ specific activity search engine last year when he was trying to find a ‘street dance’ class for his 4year old daughter as an alternative to watching the ‘Frozen’ movie for the hundredth time. “After struggling to find the information I was looking for on-line, the concept of finding and then accessing local kids activity providers through just one website quickly got me thinking there is a gap in the market,” he said. Active Alfie has already signed up over 1,500 activity providers and is on target to help and support 10,000 activity providers by the end of the year. If you have a business which provides kids activity services why not start reaching out to parents online for FREE via www.activealfie.co.uk

New findings highlight importance of PE and school sport in supporting the wellbeing of young people New research released this week by the Children's Society showing English children are among the unhappiest in the world at school makes for 'worrying reading' according to the Youth Sport Trust (YST) Chief Executive, Ali Oliver. The report also adds further weight to the YST's strong belief that greater focus is needed on supporting the wellbeing of young people as they progress through school and the vital role that physical activity, high quality physical education and school sport can have to support that.
