UKactive makes policy recommendations to get the population active Blueprint for an Active Britain UKactive's Blueprint for an Active Britain calls for a singleminded focusing of resources, energy and policy to turn the tide of physical inactivity. It is one of the UK's greatest-ever social challenges. At its heart, the UKactive Blueprint lays the foundations for a stakeholder-supported government-led review of how and where physical activity can play a part in improving the nation's well-being, with practical policy recommendations across a range of areas. It reveals fresh data citing that 57% of MPs believe physical inactivity is one of the top two health issues facing the UK right now and that 79% of MPs feel that physical inactivity should be a higher priority for government. For the first time, this document brings together the highest profile voices to address core themes in physical activity promotion, and sets out an ambitious forward course for policy development at this critical juncture. Blueprint for an Active Britain continued… Policy recommendations relating to schools cover ‘Children and Families’ and ‘Active Travel’. Children and Families - POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS 1 There is currently no standardised, comprehensive measurement of children’s fitness. Government and the academic community must understand the extent of the inactivity crisis in children and young people today 2 Activity and movement should once again become the norm for children and young people at school and beyond. 3 Parents and families should be supported to develop active lifestyles, from the earliest age. 4 There is a perception, rightly so in some cases, that technology has contributed to the increasingly sedentary lifestyles of children. However as recent developments in active software and hardware have shown, rapidly emerging technology can also present a huge opportunity for, rather than just a barrier to, activity. Active Travel - POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS 3 Government and local authorities should collaborate with schools, workplaces, the physical activity sector and technology providers to champion active commuting. Access the full report for insight into how these policy recommendations will work. Blueprint for an Active Britain > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Change4Life Primary School Sport Clubs reach over quarter of a million young people More children are becoming active and healthy thanks to Change4Life Primary School Sports Clubs, an independent report has found. The evaluation, conducted by Canterbury Christ Church University, found that the number of children achieving at least 60 active minutes every day has increased by 69 per cent in four years with over a quarter of a million young people benefitting from the programme. Since Change4Life Primary School Sports Clubs started in 2011, 270,000 primary school children have profited from the school-based clubs which offer an inspiring place to try out new sports and activities. The clubs aim to increase the physical activity, health and wellbeing of less active seven to nine year olds, of whom almost 82% of those joining were previously not achieving at least 60 active minutes every day, including more than 69% who were not achieving at least 30 active minutes every day. Jessica Ennis-Hill encourages more girls to take up sport Jessica Ennis-Hill called for more to be done to encourage the nation's young people, particularly girls, to play sport as a means of boosting their confidence, health and wellbeing. Meanwhile, a new YouGov study for Sky Academy of over 1,600 young people and 600 parents across the country shows girls have less confidence than boys in almost all situations, apart from online when using social media. Over two thirds (66%) of girls say their confidence is influenced by how attractive or unattractive they feel, compared to just 46% of boys; and over half of girls (51%) say the clothes they wear affects their confidence whilst this impacts only a third of boys (36%). With both appearance and trying new and unfamiliar experiences impacting girls' confidence, it is not surprising that girls' participation in sport falls in their teens with 92% of girls aged 13-15 not meeting the minimum requirements for physical activity compared to 86% of boys.
