Some ‘smashing’ games at the Badminton School Games competitions! Monday 25th & Tuesday 26th January saw the first of the 2016 Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival competitions take place with the girls and boys KS3 & KS4 Badminton events being held at Shrewsbury Sports Village. These competitions are part of the School Games level 3 competition programme for 2016. Harry Cade, Youth Sport Manager at Energize said “with additional competitions added to the event list for 2016 there was a need to run some of the competitions as ‘satellite’ events separate to the festival days that will take place on the 1st & 2nd March. The winning teams from these badminton level 3 competitions will also go onto the regional competition seeing teams from all over the West Midlands come together to battle it out for a place at the national competitions.” Please turnover for more! > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk
School Games Badminton continued… Both days saw teams competing to the best of their ability, showing some great determination as well as the teamwork required for the doubles matches. At the KS4 event it was a clean sweep for Bridgnorth Endowed, taking top spots for both the girls and boys competitions.

Manifesto for physical activity in early years 91% of children aged 2-4 years do not meet the Chief Medical Officers’ physical activity guidelines for their age group of three hours per day. It’s proven that physical activity for young children supports brain development, enhances bone and muscular development and benefits social and cognitive skill development and emotional wellbeing. Establishing an active life in the early years also lays the foundation to continue being active into adulthood. BHF National Centre have created a manifesto asking policy makers to embed early years physical activity into physical activity policy nationally, regionally and locally to ensure physical activity is supported across the UK at home, in early years settings and in the community. Blog: Engagement in sport and physical activity by children and young people needs to be thought of as a journey Turning 16 is one of the most important transitional periods of life. It is when young people start to determine the direction of their lives and form habits which continue into adulthood. That’s why the drop off in participation in sport and physical activity post-16 needs to be tackled. The decline in sport participation is well documented. The 2015 Active People research found that participation levels at age 14 are 80% for boys and 70% for girls. Once they reach 18 there is a sharp drop – to 60% for boys and 40% for girls. The Government’s new strategy takes a new approach to getting people active for life. It’s hoped that with careful investment and partnership working, the participation drop off can finally be halted. But this can only be achieved with the help of a sector which has more experience of working with this age group in larger numbers than any other – colleges.
