Shropshire workplaces ‘Energized’ at latest Conference Shropshire companies learned how to ‘energize’ their workforce at our latest conference which highlighted how healthy lifestyles could dramatically improve staff motivation, and boost productivity. University Centre Shrewsbury hosted the ‘How To Energize Your Workplace’ event, which brought together many expert speakers for a one-stop shop packed with advice and practical support. The event was organised by Energize; “Statistics show that the average worker has 6.6 days off sick every year, costing hundreds of pounds in lost productivity,” said Energize Business Development Officer, Helen White. “By supporting the health and wellbeing of employees, studies have shown that staff perform better at work, are more motivated, have increased job satisfaction and are less likely to look for other jobs. “We are passionate about helping workplaces to achieve this, because of the benefits it can bring, and look forward to working closer with those who left the conference with plenty of food for thought.” Keynote speakers included Professor John Buckley from the University, John is a leading academic in exercise, sedentary behaviour and cardiovascular health and revealed some powerful statistics highlighting how inactivity at work was increasing the risk of serious illness. “Inactivity is now the most prevalent risk of heart disease, above other factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol,” he said. He told how, even back in 1890, Shropshire’s Olympic pioneer Dr William Penny Brookes was writing about the importance of workers allocating at least half an hour a day to ‘bodily training’. > 01743 297191 > info@energizestw.org.uk > www.energizestw.org.uk

Continued… With standing-up desks growing in popularity as a way to burn calories in the office, Andy Rigby from Posturite demonstrated the latest range of Varidesks to delegates, who tested them out during the workshops. The workshops included a session from Laura Kerrigan and Ben Harper of Energize, who outlined services on offer to companies, including ‘active workplace consultations’, and chances to get involved in everything from rowing and rugby, to golf and badminton. Andrew Watson from the County Sports Partnership Network talked about creating an active environment through initiatives such as the Workplace Challenge (www.workplacechallenge.org.uk), a free campaign which encourages colleagues to share their healthy living progress, and offers both online and offline support and is coordinated locally by Energize. And in the Public Health workshop, Miranda Ashwell from Shropshire and Clare Harland from Telford & Wrekin revealed some telling statistics. Miranda said a typical Shropshire firm employing 250 people was currently losing £4,800 every week through staff sickness. The team from Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust – who won the Employer of the Year Award at the 2015 Energize Awards for actively encouraging and enabling staff to be active – shared some of their top tips in the afternoon session event. For further information on Energize’s Active Workplace Consultations, The Workplace Challenge or presentations from the event contact Helen helen.white@energizestw.org.uk or call 01743 297192.

New organiser for 2016 Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Half Marathon UKRunChat are organising the 2016 Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Half Marathon, which is set to take place at 9am on Sunday 19 June and will raise funds for local charities including Hope House and Severn Hospice. UKRunChat is a national online community for runners to support each other and share advice. It was all started by Shrewsbury man, Joe Williams after his baby boy suffered seizures leading to global physical and cognitive delay and his friend’s baby boy sadly passed away from a rare germ cell cancer in 2013. Joe felt understandably overwhelmed by these events and believed something good should come out of the dark times the parents experienced. A few months later Joe started a UKRunChat twitter account and started to retweeting fundraising links and offering words of encouragement to people who were running events for charities that were close to their heart. Joe worked with a colleague (Jeff) who himself had run a marathon fundraising for his Father in Law who was being treated for cancer. Jeff used his personal running story and knack of engaging with people to start local ‘business hours’ on twitter which have gone from strength to strength. After just 16 months of the hour taking place, #UKRunChat has consistently over 1250 active runners, supporting, inspiring and encouraging one another every 2-3 days, receiving as many as 3000 messages and mentions in as little as 24 hours. Joe has now undertaken the organisation of the 2016 Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Half Marathon. Embed physical activity into every workplace, urges Tanni Grey-Thompson Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson is calling on employers to drive a radical overhaul of offices to encourage physical activity around the workplace and help tackle the UK’s health woes. In a speech at the Active Working Summit in London, the ukactive chair will appeal to employers to treat provision of physical activity throughout the working day ‘with the same importance as annual and sick leave’. Urging a culture shift in office life, Grey-Thompson will suggest more employers incorporate corporate activity plans, corporate gym memberships and sit-stand desks. Physical inactivity is estimated to cost the UK £20bn per year, with the rise of sedentary office jobs held up as a key contributor to the pandemic. The impact on employers is particularly acute, with ailments associated with prolonged inactivity – such as back, neck and muscle pain – being the largest cause of the UK’s 131 million sick-days, according to the Office for National Statistics.
