Spotlight on Kelda Wood Energize Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, the County Sports Partnership for Shropshire are delighted to re-launch their Champion Programme. Over the coming weeks we will highlight the inspirational and home-grown champions who are available to visit your school, youth group, workplace or other organisation.. Kelda Wood is brim-full with enthusiasm for the benefits of sport. Following a stable yard accident which left her with leg injuries that ruined her dreams of representing GB at the Olympics in riding. Kelda began a new career in 2012, using adventurous activities as a tool to rehabilitation, after discovering how these activities had improved her own mental and physical recovery. She now runs a charity called Climbing Out, that operates residential outdoor activity programmes for young people facing life changing injuries and illnesses. After attending a talent ID day with paracanoe, Kelda found a sport that worked for her and was exactly what she was looking for. She has been training hard since May and suddenly those dreams she had of representing GB are now possible – except it will be in a boat instead of on a horse! Kelda has set her sights on Rio 2016. Shropshire Tennis Club Awarded £75,000 Woore Tennis Club, located on the North Shropshire border with Staffordshire and Cheshire, is among 149 local sports projects to secure a share of £16.5 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England to help improve facilities and playing fields across the country. A grant of £75,000 has been awarded to help Woore Tennis Club create two new floodlit tennis courts on recently acquired land in the centre of the village. The Club, established in 1983 primarily to encourage children in the village to play tennis, operated for 30 years on a single leased court in the grounds of Woore Manor House but was displaced in August 2013 when the property was sold. Club Chairman, Mandy Joyce, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can now put into place our plans to extend participation in tennis, particularly amongst local school children, young adults and their parents. There will be an increased focus on coaching and competitions and the aim is to facilitate exercise, through tennis, as part of a healthy lifestyle. We are determined that this great facility will offer all members of the community an opportunity to take up a lifelong sport. For more details about Woore Tennis Club’s project, please contact Tina Erskine on 01630 647469/ 07813 989585 or erskine865@btinternet.com

Midland Gliding Club Awarded £60,000 •

Midland Gliding Club, on the Long Mynd near Church Stretton, has been awarded £60,000 towards building new workshops to a standard that will enable maintenance and complex repairs to its own fleet of gliders and those of private owners. MGC has helped thousands of local young people get into the sport since it opened its doors in 1934.

The project is to provide a single thermally efficient building for glider engineering and maintenance, integrated with motor transport maintenance and storage. The gliding club is on an exposed hill top site and existing buildings, dating from the 1930’s are no longer fit for the required tasks - especially major repairs. The facility will provide costeffective maintenance, minor and major repairs and glider airworthiness certification for both Midland Gliding Club members and to surrounding gliding clubs in England and Wales. Club Chairman, Jon Hall, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our premises to match the quality of our pilot training. This is the first major investment in infrastructure at the club in over 60 years. Recent European regulatory changes in fleet management demand much higher standards of premises which had threatened our ability to comply. This grant has secured the future of the club”. For more details about the project, please contact Jon Hall on 01939 220152, 07801 184668 or jonmhall@me.com or David Wedlock on 07907 638583 or david.wedlock@live.co.uk

Other News and Updates Cycling and Health Cycling charity CTC have released a briefing on the evidence of health benefits of physical activity in general and cycling in particular. • People who cycle regularly in mid-adulthood typically enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger and their life expectancy is two years above the average • On average, regular cycle commuters take more than one day per year less off sick than colleagues who do not cycle to work, saving UK businesses around £83m annually. • The health benefits of cycling outweigh the injury risks by between 13:1 and 415:1, according to studies. The figure that is most often quoted - and endorsed by the Government - is 20:1 (life years gained due to the benefits of cycling v the life-years lost through injuries). • Boys aged 10-16 who cycle regularly to school are 30% more likely to meet recommended fitness levels, while girls who cycle are 7 times more likely to do so.
