Telford & Wrekin Active Lifestyle Awards Nominations for the Telford and Wrekin Active Lifestyle Awards and Sports Scholarships are now open. Awards will be handed out during the Telford & Wrekin Active Lifestyle Awards & Sports Scholars Evening on Wednesday 8th July 2015 at The Place in Oakengates. The evening honours individuals, teams, groups and business achievements in sport and physical activity. This may be about an individual who has changed their life through activity, a volunteer who has committed numerous hours to help make sport happen or a business who provides opportunities for their workforce to get more active. The evening also recognises talented young athletes in our annual sports scholars presentation. Last year more than 200 people attended and almost 60 nominations were received for awards and more than 30 gold, silver and bronze award grants were handed out to successful sports scholars. All applications for Active Lifestyle Awards and Scholarships are based on progress made in the previous 12 months and nominations are required by the closing date of Tuesday 5th May at 5pm

Moving More, Living More Forum Between the 2nd and 13th March 2015, ukactive, Public Health England, the County Sports Partnership Network and the Local Government Association delivered the second round of the Moving More, Living More, Regional Physical Activity Fora. The fora’s were established to provide national insight into what can be done to tackle physical inactivity from a national level, as well as fostering conversations and producing partnerships at a local level to make an impact on local outcomes. Walking and Cycling Offer Value for Money The Department for Transport (DfT) has released a report which summarises the recent changes to the evidence on sustainable transport, walking and cycling schemes. It also highlights key studies that quantify the impact of such schemes, which can be used to make the case for investment above other demands on budgets. The report found that for every pound invested in walking and cycling programmes, the benefits of the scheme were between three and ten pounds. Download the full report here

Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations of between ÂŁ500 and ÂŁ2,500. The funding we give goes towards providing practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects that directly benefit health, environmental sustainability or opportunities for young people in the local communities around our stores in the UK. Your project should be able to demonstrate that it can lead to tangible benefits. Bupa UK Foundation Bupa UK has recently announced the launch of its new charitable foundation, the Bupa UK Foundation. The foundation has been created to support projects and initiatives that aim to tackle critical challenges in health and social care and make a direct impact on people's health and wellbeing. Community Investment Fund Loans and equity investments are available to community based, locally led charities and social enterprises in England that are providing essential health, social care, education and training services to improve the well-being of local residents. Oswestry Sports Council Small Grants Oswestry & District Sports Council awards small grants towards sport and physical recreation in Oswestry (within a 10 mile radius of the town). Applications are welcomed from sports clubs and organisations providing opportunities in sport or physical recreation and individuals for the advancement of their sport. Grants are generally for equipment, kit and coaching.

Big Lottery Fund Support to Community Businesses The Big Lottery Fund has awarded a ÂŁ150m endowment to the Power to Change, a new independent grant-making foundation that will champion community businesses across England. The Power to Change will be the largest trust of its kind in Europe and will provide funding and support to existing and new community businesses. Backed by Trinity Mirror and the National Lottery, the Power to Change will support local people who want to save their local library or leisure centre, run their community shop or pub, or start new enterprises to regenerate a neighbourhood or high street. HLF- Parks for People Local Authorities as well as not for profit organisations that own public parks and gardens can apply for grants of between ÂŁ100,000 and ÂŁ5 million for the regeneration of parks and public gardens (including squares, walks and promenades). To be considered for funding, applicants need to show that: The community values the park as part of their heritage The parks meets local social, economic and environmental needs The park management actively involves local people The next deadline for submitting stage 1 applications is the 1st September 2015

Children and Families Grant Programme The Nuffield Foundation are offering financial assistance to support work that looks to ensure that the legal and institutional framework is best adapted to meet the needs of children and families. The grants have a maximum value of ÂŁ150,000 and a minimum of ÂŁ5000 with full applications needing to be submitted by 7 May 2015.

Grow Your Club seminar This is a one off event that will be held at Shrewsbury Town Football Club on the 28th May at 6:30pm. We have invited a very talented speaker to travel to Shropshire to share experiences about ‘Growing your Club’. Svend Elkjear has helped developed hundreds of clubs across the country and has helped clubs to attract new members, retain existing members, grow revenue, increase the social life of the club, increase media coverage and introduce new revenue streams. This is a great opportunity for clubs to learn from experience and embed some of the ideas into your own club. Workplace Challenge No Strings Badminton Competition!

Energize co-ordinate the Workplace Challenge, an online tool to help encourage active workplaces. To complement the online challenge we are working with local partners to put on fun, informal sports activities for workplaces to take part in. Following our workplace activity survey to determine what, why & where we should put on these activities, we are pleased to announce our first Workplace Challenge competition is No String Badminton on Thursday 30th April 6-8pm, cost is just ÂŁ6 per team with all equipment provided. New Korfball Club starting in Shrewsbury Korfball is one of those rare sports which is completely mixed sex, with four men and four women on a team. The name comes from the Dutch word for basketball, but although there are similarities to basketball and netball, we think it is better than both of them! Walking Basketball Get active with walking basketball, a new initiative coming soon to Telford and Wrekin Leisure for both men and women! The main difference in this new version of basketball is that you can only walk, so it is ideal for anyone who wants to get active again or those who may have low risk medical conditions. Free Swimming for Over 50’s ‘Get in the Swim’ sessions are being provided for free for Telford and Wrekin residents over 50 with a Telford Loyalty Card. British Cycling Go-Ride Change of Venue British Cycling Go-Ride coaching starts on Saturday (18/4).
