Over half of disabled people believe a “sense of belonging can be developed through volunteering New research released today to celebrate the Youth Sport Trust's work with the Spirit of 2012 has provided a detailed insight into attitudes disabled people have towards volunteering. The research shows 58% of disabled people surveyed think they can develop a sense of belonging in their local community through volunteering, while 49% feel a rise in confidence as a result of volunteering. In addition, over half (51%) of disabled people think that volunteering could improve their social skills, with the same figure saying they gain a greater sense of achievement through volunteering. However the research highlights some worrying barriers for disabled people with 63% of those questioned in the survey feeling that there are fewer opportunities for disabled people to volunteer in sport than non-disabled people. The research was unveiled by four-time Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Simmonds at the University of Bath today after it was conducted for the Inclusive Futures initiative - part of the Youth Sport Trust's Lead your generation campaign. ASA Volunteer Engagement Survey – Non Aquatic Volunteers. The ASA are committed to providing a Sport for All offer in a wider range of aquatic volunteering opportunities for all ages, abilities and differences. The ASA Volunteer Engagement Survey for non Aquatic Volunteers aims to develop a greater understanding of the reasons why members of the community chose not to participate as a volunteer within aquatics. The survey is aimed at those who are aged 16 and over, who are not currently participating as a volunteer in any aquatic environment or those who do not give up their time as a volunteer currently in any capacity. Respondents should feel free to complete the survey if they have previously been an aquatics volunteer but are no longer. This short survey will take between 5-10 minutes to complete and will provide the ASA with the information to build upon our engagement strategy to attract more volunteers into the sport and break down the barriers to volunteer participation. We have stopped moving: Tackling physical inactivity - a role for the Public Forest Estate in England? Forests are very highly valued by the public in England, as the consultation in 2011 that proposed selling off the Public Forest Estate (PFE) highlighted. The widespread outcry to the consultation showed that people value forests and access to them for many diverse reasons (O’Brien and Morris, 2013). This briefing note highlights the importance of the PFE in England, as the largest individual land owner and the contribution it can make to tackling the national crisis of physical inactivity.  Those with good access or perceived access to greenspace are 27% more likely to be physical active  Exercising in greenspace is linked to significantly lower stress levels and can be a motivator for behaviour change Click the link below to download the full report: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/Wehavestoppedmoving_FINAL 1.pdf/$FILE/Wehavestoppedmoving_FINAL1.pdf If you haven’t already read the Sport & Recreation Alliances ‘Reconomics’ work on the economis value of the outdoor recreation section, click here to access

Kelda Wood: This Girl Can Kelda Wood, founder of charity ‘Climbing Out’ and future Paralympian, Kelda shares her This Girl Can inspirational story. Kelda has suffered several set-backs throughout her life and although she now feels like a This Girl Can again, this wasn’t always the case. Kelda’s story shows that the most dedicated sports women have to overcome huge obstacles in their path, re-evaluate their dreams and dedicate themselves time and time again. Kelda now has her sights set on Rio 2016 and we wish her all the luck. Most of us aim a little lower this in our sporting aspirations (myself included) but we can all gain the same benefits, as Kelda describes ‘if it brings you friendship, fitness, fun and a smiley face, it might just be the thing you need’. Why not see if you can find your sport or activity which gets your heart beating faster, makes you feel healthy and happy. Go on be a This Girl Can!
