ICOM celebrates apprenticeships for ‘National Apprenticeship Week’ #NAW2015 National Apprenticeship Week (NAW2015) - takes place from 9-13 March 2015, and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. Supporting the event, the Industrial and Commercial Energy Association, ICOM, will be showcasing a series of real life apprenticeship career profiles. The profiles demonstrate how an apprenticeship can provide; qualifications, career progression, excitement and crucially the experience and opportunity to work in a real life environment.

Meet Simon. Name: Simon Moulding Type of apprenticeship: Engineering HNC Year started/completed: 1987-1990 Current position: Production Manager 1.

What encouraged you to do an apprenticeship in your chosen field?

It was a field that was constantly changing, had many facets and was challenging


2. What are the most important skills your apprenticeship has taught you? The basics – How things are manufactured, how design & manufacturing needs to work hand in hand to ensure that goods are produced effectively. 3.

Do an apprenticeship. It gives you a good base to develop into what you want to achieve.

What opportunities has your apprenticeship provided you with?

It is transferrable to other industries. The apprenticeship & HNC prove that you can follow things through the completion. Employers look for this when recruiting. 4.

6. What advice would you give to young people unsure about an apprenticeship in your industry?

Could you describe what your typical working day entails?

Ensuring products are produced on time, the components are there in time for assembly. Ensuring designs are programmed to run on CNC machinery, health & safety and continuous improvement. 5. What has been your proudest achievement or highlight in your working career? I took over a truss manufacturing plant that was loss making, installed new machinery, trained operators and returned it to profitability in 12 months.
