1. Industry Statistics Gas Boilers    

Gas boiler sales in November fell by 13.4% in comparison with November 2013. This fall is partly attributable to the 29,094 boiler sales made through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) in November 2013, compared with only 5,817 sales through ECO in November 2014. There were 1.53 million gas boilers sold in the year-to-date, an increase of 0.6% over this point last year. Sales on a 12-month rolling basis grew by 1.15%. November

2. Macroeconomic Statistics Housing  

 

Seasonally adjusted housing starts in England were estimated at 32,890 for Quarter 3 2014, an increase of 0.9% over Quarter 3 2013. Seasonally adjusted completions for Q3 2014 were 31,190, an increase of 8.5% over 28,740 in Q3 2013. The price of the average UK house rose to £189,388 in November, signalling annual house price growth of 8.5% compared with November 2013. Monthly house price growth fell to 0.3%, signalling a slight slowdown of the growth seen in the first 10 months of the year.

The number of property transactions declined by 0.8% compared to November 2013.

Gross mortgage lending reached £16.9 billion in November, marking a slight reduction in the £16.92 billion seen in November last year. Lending for the year-to-date is 7.7% higher than at this point last year.

  

British construction activity (as measured by Markit/CPIS) in November increased at the slowest rate since mid-2013. The UK construction purchasing managers’ index* (PMI) fell to a seasonally adjusted 59.4 from a reading of 61.4 in October. *A PMI value of more than 50 represents expansion of the sector, anything below 50 signifies a contraction. Consumer Sector    

UK consumer confidence remained unchanged at -2 in November, representing the 8th consecutive month of little movement in consumer confidence. Experts have predicted that this trend could continue until after the 2015 General Election. Retail sales value showed strong growth in November. The value of sales excluding fuel rose 5.23% compared with November last year. On a monthly basis they rose by 1.4%; largely driven by increased spending as a result of Black Friday.

13

Back to Table of Contents

 

New car sales (rolling-year total) grew for the 33rd consecutive month in November. Monthly sales were 172,327, up 8% from November 2013.

Inflation on a monthly basis was negative in November, as measured by both the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Retail Price Index (RPI). It is thought that the fall in prices is partly attributable to lower commodity prices, stemming from weaker demand in the emerging economies. Annual inflation (CPI) fell to a 12-year low of 1% in November, suggesting that the Bank of England is unlikely to raise interest rates until at least the autumn 2015.

Macroeconomic Indicators 

GDP in Quarter 3 grew 0.7 % quarter-on-quarter, and 3% on an annual basis.

GDP per capita showed strong growth on a quarterly basis, with annual growth of 1.8%.

Unemployment levels remain unchanged on a monthly basis at 6%, representing a significant reduction from 7.2% at this point last year.

The rate of economic inactivity in October rose to 22.3% compared with 22.2% in September.

UK national debt rose by 6.6% in the past 12 months, reaching £1.457 trillion by the end of November. Despite solid GDP growth, falling income tax receipts hindered the government’s attempts to reduce the deficit.

  

Net public debt as a percentage of GDP rose by 1.3 percentage points in the last 12 months, reaching 79.5%. This is an increase over the 78.3% forecast in the 2013 Autumn Statement. Despite some deleveraging in the past year, high levels of household and nonfinancial corporation debt remain a significant worry for the UK economy - UK private debt as a percentage of GDP fell from 176% in Q2 2013 to 162% in the same quarter this year. The Office for Budget Responsibility does not expect this downward trend to continue; forecasts for 2015 onwards show an increase in private debt levels.

Manufacturing Sector  

“Factory gate inflation” as measured by PPI Output fell 0.1% in the year to November This fall was largely driven by a 7.8% decrease in the price of petroleum products and a reduction of 3.2% in the output price of food products.

Manufacturing input prices fell 8.8% in the last 12 months, with a decrease of 1% between October and November 2014. As with the output measure, this decrease is mostly a result of falling oil prices and food materials.

  

 

Eurozone PMI fell from 50.6 in October to 50.1 in November, bringing the currency union very close to the contractionary level. The Eurozone was helped by strong expansion in Spain (54.7), whilst being dragged down by sub50 PMI in Italy, Germany and France. UK PMI rose slightly in November to 53.5 from 53.3 in October. Despite failing exports to the Eurozone and emerging markets, the UK manufacturing sector continued to expand, thanks to strong domestic demand.

3. Government Scheme Statistics Non-Domestic RHI Applications    

As at 30th November 2014, a total of 9,285 full applications to join the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme had been made. Of these, 246 were made in November 2014; this was 5.75% lower than the same month last year. Non-Domestic RHI applications for the year-to-date are 116% higher than at this point in 2013. This growth has partially been the result of spikes in applications during June and September 2014 (1,118 and 1,637 applications respectively); both of these spikes are thought to have been caused by degression announcements in the preceding months. Boiler Installations   

November 2014 saw a 10.7% increase in boiler installations through the Green Deal (GD) and Energy Company Obligation* (ECO) schemes, in comparison with October 2014. Boiler installations made through the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) fell in November, as the effects of GDHIF release 1 waned. GDHIF release 2 commenced on 10th December 2014. Data on measures installed from the second phase will be available towards the end of Q1 2015. *Measures installed through ECO are at a lag of one month compared to other figures, due to the increased reporting and verification time.
