   

New car registrations reached a 10 year high in 2014 – in total, nearly 2.5 million new cars were registered in the calendar year. Monthly sales were 166,198, up 8.6% from December 2013. Inflation on an annual basis - as measured by the Consumer Price Index – fell to 0.5% in December. The slow growth in prices is largely attributable to falling commodity and food prices. Fears of a deflationary spiral were partially allayed by strong retail sales in December.

Macroeconomic Indicators 

GDP in Quarter 3 was revised downwards in late December. Annual growth is now thought to be 2.6%.

GDP per capita showed strong growth on a quarterly basis, with annual growth of 2%.

Unemployment fell to 5.8% in November 2014, a significant fall from the 7.1% in November 2013.

The rate of economic inactivity in November rose to 22.4% compared with 22.3% last year.

UK national debt rose by 6.8% in the past 12 months, reaching £1.483 trillion by the end of December. Despite solid GDP growth, falling income tax receipts hindered the government’s attempts to reduce the deficit.

  

Net public debt as a percentage of GDP rose by 1.6 percentage points in the last 12 months, reaching 80.9%. This is an increase over the 78.3% forecast in the 2013 Autumn Statement. Despite some deleveraging in the past year, high levels of household and nonfinancial corporation debt remain a significant worry for the UK economy - UK private debt as a percentage of GDP fell from 176% in Q2 2013 to 162% in the same quarter this year. The Office for Budget Responsibility does not expect this downward trend to continue; forecasts for 2015 onwards show an increase in private debt levels.

3. Government Scheme Statistics Non-Domestic RHI Applications The Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government environmental programme that provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heat for non-domestic purposes. 

 

December 2014 saw a surge in the number of applications to join the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. 2,203 applications were made in December, compared with 245 in November 2014. The increase is largely attributable to the tariff reduction that came into effect on 1st January 2015. As of 31st December 2014, a total of 11,487 full applications had been made to join the NonDomestic RHI.
