1. Industry Statistics Gas Boilers
133,420 gas boilers were sold in January 2015, a fall of 18% in comparison with January 2014. The decline was in part due to the lessening impact of Energy Company Obligation (ECO) sales on the boiler market. On a moving annual basis, gas boiler sales were down 3.1%.

Hot water storage cylinder sales in January 2015 were 0.7% lower than sales in January 2014. Solid growth of 0.8% in the conventional cylinder market was counteracted by a 19% fall in sales of cylinders for renewable systems. On an annual basis, sales showed a slight improvement, rising by 0.3%.

A total of 129,743 smart meters were installed in Quarter 3 of 2014. This figure represents a 40% increase over Quarter 3 2013 and the highest number of domestic installations in any quarter. Of these, 59% were electricity smart meters and 41% gas smart meters.

2. Macroeconomic Statistics Housing
Seasonally adjusted housing starts in England were estimated at 29,800 for Quarter 2014, a decrease of 8.7% over Quarter 4 2013. Seasonally adjusted completions for Q4 2014 were 30,760, an increase of 7.9% in comparison with the 28,510 completions in Q4 2013.
In December 2014, the price of the average UK house reached £188,446. Price growth on an annual basis was 6.8%, a reduction from 7.2% in December. January marked the fifth consecutive month in which the rate of price growth has softened.
There were a total of 97,320 residential property transactions in January 2015. This was a decline of 6.1% in comparison with January 2014.
Gross mortgage lending reached £14.3 billion in January 2015, a fall of 11% over January last year.
The UK construction purchasing managers’ index* (PMI) rebounded to 59.6 in January, up from 57.6 in December. Despite the upturn, the latest reading was still the second-lowest since September 2013.
*A PMI value of more than 50 represents expansion of the sector, anything below 50 signifies a contraction. Jan

Consumer Sector
UK consumer confidence rose from -4 in December to 1 in January. Consumer sentiment was encouraged by a triumvirate of falling fuel prices, steady wage growth and low inflation.
Retail sales value including fuel fell by 1% (0.9% excluding fuel) in January, compared with December 2014. Sales value on an annual basis remains positive – with growth of 2.25% including fuel, 3.04% without.

The new car market continued to see strong growth. Monthly sales of new cars were 164,856, up 6.7% from January 2014.
Inflation on an annual basis - as measured by the Consumer Price Index – fell to 0.3% in December. The slow growth in prices is largely attributable to falling commodity and food prices. The Bank of England has warned that inflation may turn negative in the spring.

Macroeconomic Indicators
The British economy recorded its strongest annual growth since 2007, growing by 2.6% for the year. Growth was boosted by strong consumer and government spending, while business investment and exports contracted. Quarter-on-quarter growth was slightly higher at 2.7%.
GDP per capita in Q4 2014 showed solid growth of 1.7% compared with the same quarter in 2013.
Unemployment fell to 5.7% in November 2014, a significant fall from the 7.2% in November 2013.
The rate of economic inactivity in November remained steady at 22.3%.
UK national debt rose by 6.3% in the past 12 months, reaching £1.464 trillion by the end of December.
Net public debt as a percentage of GDP rose by 1.2 percentage points in the last 12 months, reaching 79.6%. Jan

Energy Prices
Domestic gas prices rose by 2.8% in real terms between Q3 2014 and Q3 2013. Domestic electricity prices rose by 3.4% in this period. Quarter-on-quarter prices for both gas and electricity fell by 0.9%.

Manufacturing Sector
“Factory gate inflation” - as measured by the Producer Price Index Output measure – fell by 1.8% in the 12 months leading to January 2015.
Input price inflation deepened to -14.2%, from -10.7% in the previous month.
The outlook for manufacturing in the Eurozone ticked slightly higher in January, reaching 51 from December’s reading of 50.6. The ongoing economic crisis in Greece continued to overshadow improvements in business conditions in Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands.

3. Government Scheme Statistics Non-Domestic RHI Applications The Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government environmental programme that provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heat for non-domestic purposes.
January 2015 saw an expected fall in the number of applications to join the Non-Domestic RHI scheme. December’s surge in applications was driven largely by a tariff reduction that came into effect on 1st January 2015. As of 31st January 2015, a total of 11,563 full applications had been made to join the Non-Domestic RHI.

Domestic RHI Applications The Domestic RHI is a Government environmental programme that promotes the use of renewable heat for domestic purposes.
Aggregate monthly Domestic RHI applications fell in January to 2,127, a decrease of 39% in comparison with December 2014. Despite the overall fall, sales of air source heat pumps grew by 63%. In total, 24,882 applications have been made under the domestic RHI scheme.

Green Deal Assessments and Plans
The number of Green Deal Assessments reached the 470,000 mark in January 2015. The 26,357 GD Assessments in January 2015 marked an increase of 6% over December 2014.
Up to the end of January 2015, there were 9,583 GD Plans in the system.
Of these plans, 26% are in their first stage (“New Plans” – quote accepted), 18% are in the second stage (“Pending Plans” – Plan signed) and the remaining 55% are in the final stage* (“Live Plans” – all measures installed). *NB. These percentages do not sum to 100%, due to rounding.

4. Regional Housing Statistics Regional House Prices
House price growth in London and surrounding areas continued to outpace growth in other areas of the country. London saw annual house price growth of 18%, while prices in the Outer Metropolitan and Outer South-East areas grew by 12% and 11% respectively. Prices elsewhere saw more modest growth, particularly in the North of England (4.4%), Scotland (4.2%) and Wales (1.4%).

Regional Housing Starts and Completions
The number of quarterly housing starts grew in 18 of the 39 regions listed. Coventry and Warwickshire (65.7%) and Northamptonshire (59.6%) displayed the highest growth since Q4 2013. In the regions where the number of housing starts fell, the effect was most pronounced in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, where the number of starts was 49% lower than in the same quarter last year. The number of quarterly housing completions grew annually in 27 of the 39 regions listed. Growth was strongest in Leicester and Leicestershire (71%) and the Thames Valley (60%). In the regions where the number of completions fell, the decrease was most significant in the Humber (-30%).
