1. Industry Statistics Gas Boilers   

147,308 gas boilers were sold in February 2015. This represented a fall of 2.8% in comparison with February 2015. Year-to-date sales are 10% lower than at this time last year. The slow start to the year is largely attributable to the high number of sales through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme in 2014.

Sales of radiators in February 2015 were 6% lower than in February 2014. Moving annual sales are 0.6% higher than in February 2014. 2015 has seen a slower start than 2014, with year-to-date sales 11% lower than at this time last year.

Solar Thermal Panels   

1,545 m² of solar thermal panels were sold in February 2015. Sales were 56% lower than sales in February 2014. Sales for the year-to-date are 47% lower than at this point last year.

Smart Meter Installations  

A total of 142,693 smart meters were installed in Quarter 4 of 2014. Quarter 4’s figures bring the cumulative total of installed smart meters to 764,806. Of these, 452,860 are electrical smart meters and 311,946 are gas meters.

2. Macroeconomic Statistics Housing  

Seasonally adjusted housing starts in England were estimated at 29,800 for Quarter 4 2014 – a decrease of 8.7% over Quarter 4 2013. Seasonally adjusted completions for Q4 2014 were 30,760 - an increase of 7.9% over 28,510 in Q4 2013.

  

In February 2015, the price of the average UK house reached £187,964. Price growth on an annual basis was 5.7%. Annual house price growth slowed further in February, marking the sixth consecutive month in which the rate of growth has softened.

 

There were a total of 100,510 residential property transactions in February 2015. This was a decline of 7.9% in comparison with February 2014.

Gross mortgage lending fell to £13.4 billion in February 2015 – decreasing from £14.8 billion in February 2014. Gross mortgage lending for the year-to-date reached £28.2 billion. This is 8.8% lower than at this time in 2014.

  

The UK construction purchasing managers’ index* (PMI) rose to 60.1 February, up from 59.1 in January. This increase in output growth was driven by the fastest increase of new orders since October 2014. *A PMI value of more than 50 represents expansion of the sector, anything below 50 signifies a contraction. Consumer Sector  

UK consumer confidence remained at +1 in February. Consumer optimism has risen considerably from -7 in February 2014.

As of 25th March, retail sales statistics for February 2015 have not been released by the Office for National Statistics.

 

New car registrations continued to see annual growth in February 2015. Monthly sales were 76,958 in February 2015, an increase of 12% over February 2014.

Macroeconomic Indicators 

GDP in Quarter 4 was £428 billion. Economic growth on an annual basis is 2.7%.

Quarterly GDP per capita reached £6,599, corresponding to annual growth of 2%.

Unemployment remained 5.7% in December 2014, a significant fall from the 7.2% in December 2013.

The rate of economic inactivity in December 2014 fell to 22.2%, representing no change from this point last year.

UK national debt rose by 6.0% in the past 12 months, reaching £1.469 trillion by the end of December.

Net public debt as a percentage of GDP rose by 1.2 percentage points in the last 12 months, reaching 79.6%.

Energy Prices   

Domestic gas prices rose by 2.8% in real terms between Q3 2014 and Q3 2013. Domestic electricity prices rose by 3.4% in this period. Quarter-on-quarter prices for both gas and electricity fell by 0.9%.

Manufacturing Sector 

“Factory gate inflation” as measured by PPI Output fell 1.8% in the year to February 2015.

Annual input price inflation deepened to -13.5% in February 2015.

  

Growth in the Eurozone manufacturing sector remained weak in February. Despite strong growth in Ireland and Spain, aggregate growth was slowed by contracting manufacturing sectors in Austria, Greece and France. Eurozone PMI of 51 was unchanged from January.

3. Government Scheme Statistics Non-Domestic RHI Applications The Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government environmental programme that provides financial incentives to increase the uptake of renewable heat for non-domestic purposes.  

February 2015 saw a 33% increase in the number of applications to join the Non-Domestic RHI scheme. 121 applications were made in February, compared with 91 in January. As of 28th February 2015, a total of 11,673 full applications had been made to join the scheme.

Domestic RHI Applications The Domestic RHI is a Government environmental programme that promotes the use of renewable heat for domestic purposes.   

Aggregate monthly Domestic RHI applications continued to grow in February. Total applications (for both new and legacy installations) rose to 3,286, compared with 2,127 in January. Growth in the number of Air Source Heat Pump applications was particularly strong, seeing an increase of 122% over January’s figures. In total, 28168 applications have been made under the domestic RHI scheme.

Boiler Installations 

Compared with February, January saw a fall in the number of boilers installed as a result of the Green Deal (GD) and Energy Company Obligation* (ECO) schemes.

The number of boilers installed through the ECO scheme fell by 4.4%.

Boiler installations made through the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) rose by 35%, while installations of Flue Gas Heat Recovery systems rose by 28%.

Up to the end of February 2015, 10,686 measures have been installed using Green Deal Finance, with 915 installations in February. Boiler and photovoltaics (included within the Micro-generation figure) accounted for nearly twothirds of new installations in February.

Green Deal Assessments and Plans    

The number of Green Deal Assessments passed the half-million mark in February 2015. The 28,239 GD Assessments in February 2015 was a 7% increase in comparison with January. As of 28th February 2015, there were 10,846 GD plans in the syzstem, an increase of 13.2% over the 9,583 plans at the end of January 2015. Of these plans, 27% are in their first stage (“New Plans” – quote accepted), 18% are in the second stage (“Pending Plans” – Plan signed) and the remaining 55% are in the final stage (“Live Plans” – all measures installed).

Feed-in Tariff Installations   

As of February 2015 there were a total of 664,126 Feed-in Tariff commissioned installations. Of these, the vast majority (98.7%) are solar PV installations, accounting for 85% of installed capacity. There were 9,639 new FiT commissioned installations in February 2015 – an increase of 23.4% over January 2015.

4. Regional Housing Statistics Regional House Prices   

House price growth in London and surrounding areas continued to outpace growth in other areas of the country. London saw annual house price growth of 21%, while prices in the Outer Metropolitan and Outer South-East areas grew by 14% and 13% respectively. Prices elsewhere saw more modest growth, particularly in the North of England (4.3%), Scotland (5.25%) and Wales (5.05%).

Regional Housing Starts and Completions   

  

The number of quarterly housing starts grew annually in 29 of the 39 regions listed. York and North Yorkshire (64.8%), Swindon and Wiltshire (68.8%) and Cumbria (53.6%) displayed the highest growth since Q3 2013. In the 10 regions where the number of housing starts fell, the effect was most pronounced in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, where the number of starts was 57% lower than in the same quarter last year. The number of quarterly housing completions grew annually in 25 of the 39 regions listed. Growth was strongest in the Tees Valley (120.9%), the Solent (84.9%) and Stoke and Staffordshire (65.7%). In the 14 regions where the number of completions fell, the decrease was most significant in the Humber (-41.8%).
