FOREWORD

I am looking forward to the future. Offshore oil, gas and

wind power. We should get used to mentioning all three of them in the same sentence. They tell the compelling story of an industry which is innovative, versatile and diversified and has proven its capacity to re-invent itself by building a new offshore industry on the foundation of the old. Offshore wind power is booming all over Europe these years. For the first time offshore wind power is showing its great potential in terms of becoming a competitive large-scale source of renewable energy. Denmark is once again at the forefront of this promising development which for the first time has provided clear and undisputed evidence of rapidly falling costs in the industry. After a very successful 2015 tender for the Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm in the North Sea, which secured a remarkably low bidding price, I am looking forward to the outcome of the 2016 tender for the offshore wind farm Kriegers Flak in the Baltic Sea. We have the highest number of prequalified tenderers in Danish wind history. And while I salute the fact that Danish companies play an important role as market leaders in delivering on the promise of cost-reductions throughout the whole supply chain, I am pleased by the fact that we are opening up the Danish market to several new foreign players, who choose to invest in Denmark for the first time. At the same time as wind power is booming, the value created by the Danish offshore oil and gas production continues to be of great importance to the industry – and to the Danish economy. I am convinced that the production of oil and gas from the North Sea will continue to play

an important role in Denmark's energy supply for many years to come while we continue to gradually increase our share of renewable energy, including not the least offshore wind power. The oil and gas sector is faced with a number of challenges. The price of oil has dropped significantly during the last years and at the same time the production of oil and gas from the North Sea has declined since 2004. However, while the North Sea is now a more mature basin, an unneglectable commercial potential still remains and hence it is essential that our oil and gas resources are developed and produced while the necessary infrastructure is available. Continued exploration for new discoveries is another important element in order to reduce the decline in production and in this regard I am happy that the 7th Danish licencing round in the North Sea is currently undergoing the very last formal stages of finalization. Ageing infrastructure makes timely utilization of our resources essential and requires close collaboration between the parties involved in our oil and gas business. Consequently the Government has initiated the development of a strategy for the future of Danish oil and gas production. I am looking forward to the results of the work which takes place in productive cooperation with the industry. Danish offshore oil, gas and wind power will continue to be of great importance to our economy. And even though the more mature parts of the offshore sector are facing challenges, I remain convinced that all actors are committed to – and capable of – rising to the challenges. I am looking forward to the future. ▪ Yearbook Energy Insight 5

Cutting costs without losing cutting edge Mixing learning and development with a balanced book is difficult. New forum for offshore wind is determined to find cost reductions in the industry without losing the edge - You will not become a better wind turbine technician by knowing something about the ship that takes you to the turbine in the morning and picks you up at night, Christian Munk Jensen, Project Manager at Offshore energy.dk says: - But if you know the way the ship operates, and if you know that it is indeed of great importance to the ship's operating expenses if you could remember to ask for your pick up half an hour before instead of five minutes before – then you become a more efficient wind turbine technician. And that is in everyone's interest, he says. At Offshoreenergy.dk, Christian Munk Jensen, Project Manager heads a project to reduce costs in the offshore wind industry. Cost reduction in a developing and emerging Christian Munk Jensen, Project Manager, industry is balancing two Renewables, Offshoreenergy.dk very difficult tasks at the same time: Staying afloat financially while staying sharp on innovation. Finding the right formula to cut cost while remaining cutting edge is in high demand. A new forum representing the majority of the supply chain from the offshore wind business tries to work together to solve it: - We are trying to establish a forum to debate common standards and procedures to find out, where we can find a common ground for all, Christian Munk Jensen says: By Sune Falther

“In the forum, it is your experience and contribution to the cost reduction effort that matters. Not the size of the company you represent”.

6 Energy Insight Yearbook

- When you are in an industry that is constantly evolving, you often focus on product innovation and neglect process innovation. The reason is obvious: Why invest a large amount of money in optimizing how to transport an 80-meter blade from point A to point B in the absolute best way in terms of costs and quality… only to find that the next generation of blades are 90 meters; thus changing all the prerequisites and losing you the investment, he says. Still, there are areas where we can optimize the process, he says: - We cooperate more and exchange experiences. We share the challenge: We must save 40 percent in 2020 compared to 2012, Christian Munk Jensen says: - And after that we have to save 40 percent again. The journey does not stop in 2020. The forum was founded in August 2014 and shortly after defined five areas of focus: The tendering process, incentives in installation contracts, installation logistics, operation & maintenance logistics and sub-sea maintenance. The areas are debated in an open environment with all members participating and sharing. - The dialogue is good and open. An important point, that the members of the group agreed on straight away, is that the mutual knowledge and understanding of each other's work is important. The only way to get there is to share, Christian Munk Jensen says. ▪

Cost reduction remains the prime target for 2016 by Sune Falther · photo: dnv·gl

The ‘lower-for-longer’ view will continue to dominate the industry confidence If only they hadn’t been so thorough, one could

hope that the gloom in DNV GL’s Outlook for the Oil and Gas Industry 2016 was coincidental. However, based as it is on a global survey incorporating the views of 921 senior industry professionals and executives, along with 12 in-depth interviews with a range of experts, business leaders and analysts, the Outlook for the Oil and Gas Industry 2016 is difficult to dismiss: The industry is in for another tough year. - Recently it was reported that half the companies operating the North Sea are losing money doing so, with the British operators collectively losing 6.4 billion £ (62 billion DKR) in 2015. But it is not just in the North Sea that the operators are suffering, says Jørgen Traun, Vice President at DNV GL: - It has been a very rough year for the industry globally. So far, around 250.000 people have lost their job in the oil and gas industry. As an example Shell recently announced that they will reduce the headcount with further 10.000.

8 Energy Insight Yearbook

Still cutting costs The DNV GL industry study identifies the top three barriers to growth in the industry, and the outlook for 2016 mirrors 2015 in having low oil and gas prices and a weak global economy. The contrast to the barriers in 2014 are stark – at that time, the barriers were skills shortage and rising costs. The barriers are very visible in the industry confidence. Between 80 and 93 percent of the interviewees had an overall confidence to the oil and gas sector in 2014. That changed last year and went lower still this year with between 17 and 34 percent having an overall confidence, with only

the Asia Pacific feeling more optimistic for 2016 than they did for 2015. Low prices and low confidence results in a year with high focus on cost reduction: 88 percent of the companies states managing costs as top or high priority for the year, increasing slightly from 85 percent in 2015: - Cost reduction remains the main target, says Jørgen Traun: - Many companies were successful in cutting costs last year, grabbing the bull by the horns and confronting the task. 74 percent of the industry said that they were successful to some degree in reaching their cost-efficiency targets for the period. And they needed to be – some of the oil majors have had a few years now, where high production costs have marginalized profits. We expect to see a continued focus on cutting costs both by reducing investments and headcount and forwarding cost cutting demands down the supply chain, he says.

More standardization

“We have to remember: The supply is greater than the demand right now, but it is very small margins causing the problems. We still use more oil today, than we did before the global financial crisis hit in 2007/2008”. Jørgen Traun, Vice President at DNV GL

The need to cut costs has made more companies interested in finding industry standards and collaborating to maintain innovative. Many in the industry will increase collaboration with other industry players (45%) or consider greater involvement in joint industry projects (30%). - There is definitely an interest in finding both more standardization and greater collaboration, and there is an increased acceptance in the industry, that tailor-made isn’t the only option out there, Jørgen Traun says. And there is a potential to be found in standardization. - Standards would definitely reduce costs and has the potential to improve the industry in the process. In 2014, the lack of skilled people drove the costs in production to rise. If the industry had focused more on finding standards, then the demand for engineers could have been reduced - instead of increased costs we could have had smarter solutions, Jørgen Traun says. ▪

Creating a frame for industry standards and collaborations is a main focal point for DNV GL More standardization in the industry and

greater collaboration between the industry players will be a major focal point for the oil and gas industry in 2016. Participants in DNV GL’s Outlook for the Oil and Gas Industry 2016 stated that they will increase collaboration with other industry players; get more involved in joint industry projects (JIPs) or create specific joint ventures with an external partner in 2016. The survey quotes Brian Sullivan, Executive Director, IPIECA ,for saying: “Overall, the industry definitely wants to increase the depth and extent to which they collaborate, particularly in areas where there are no competition issues”. Jørgen Traun, Vice President at DNV GL, says creating the frame to collaborate and standardize is one of the focal points for DNV GL in 2016. - Many companies are increasingly looking to standardization and collaborations to cut costs. And with good reason, Jørgen Traun says:

- There are definitely cost cutting potentials to realize in the industry by finding more standard solutions. Some of the more exotic methods have been scrapped, but there is still more to gain, Jørgen Traun says.

Look to maritime industry In 2015, DNV GL initiated 40 joint industry projects, and a further 43 projects are already scheduled for 2016. - There has over the years been a tendency to add layer upon layer of complexity onto offshore projects – also in areas, where there is no need to. We believe there is a potential in standardization, Jørgen Traun says. Some of the joint industry projects draw on DNV GL’s maritime experience, for instance in classification and verification of vessels, where DNV GL has helped shape industry standards: - The classification system used in the maritime industry could in many areas be integrated in the offshore industry. For

instance, the hull of an FPSO is classed as a vessel, but the onboard process facilities becomes made-to-measure, purpose build and unique – with many meetings and many designers and many individual requirements, making it very expensive, Jørgen Traun says. So far, the results from the collaborations have been good; with a potential benefit from the projects between 7 and 15 percent in terms of are cost savings and up to 30 percent in terms of time saving. And that is just the beginning

Collaboration and mergers The cost focus in the industry is felt through the supply chain – also at DNV GL, where the global headcount has been reduced with close to 1.000 to the current level of 15.000. - Almost everything we are engaged in has changed, Jørgen Traun says: - With no new FPSO’s being ordered, we lack in classification – one of our largest areas. And our third-party inspection, verification

“One of the answers to the current cost challenges in the oil and gas industry is for our customers to cooperate in JIPs to find common means to cut costs”. Jørgen Traun, Vice President at DNV GL

and testing is also reduced, as investments in new field development are drastically reduced. The industry as a whole has cut back 20 to 25 percent, and we have adjusted accordingly, he says. Creating a frame for more collaboration is also shaping DNV GL. - It is part of our DNA to look for collaboration and standardization and finding ways of succeeding in partnerships. Our recent merger with DNV and GL is a good example of that, Jørgen Traun says. ▪

ESVAGT: Knowledge leads to efficiency Knowing the priorities and respecting each other’s time and resources is key to cutting cost in offshore wind by Sune Falther · photo: esvagt

Located in the North Sea west of the island Sylt, the

Butendiek Park is an example of how servicing an offshore wind park is done as efficient as possible. Surrounded by 80 turbines in the park, the ‘Esvagt Faraday’ is the manager’s office, construction workshop, spare parts-store, meeting room and home away from home for the Siemens technicians servicing the park. ‘Esvagt Faraday’ – and her sister-ship ‘Esvagt Froude’ working the offshore wind farm Baltic II for Siemens as well – are the first purpose build SOV’s (Service Operations Vessel) constructed specifically to service an offshore wind farm as efficiently as possible. - The SOV-concept has eliminated a lot of sailing for the technicians, says Ole Ditlev Nielsen, Chief Commercial & Safety Officer at ESVAGT: - We have eliminated a lot of lost time in transfer, made the technicians less seasick and given them a place to work and a spare part-store to work from. It is all

focused around running an efficient and safe operation, he says.

Sharing a goal The experiences from SOV’s like the ‘Esvagt Faraday’ are some of the reasons why ESVAGT have been an active participant in the Offshore Wind Cost Reduction Forum set up by Offshoreenergy.dk. ESVAGT has taken part in the 24/7-group, where the round the clock efficiency and the use of CTV’s have been debated, and will be hosting a new group debating the possibilities in sharing the tonnage to make better use of the existing capacity. - We welcome the forums as a platform and a network to discuss matters of mutual importance, Ole Ditlev Nielsen says: - We all have our own agendas, but we all share a common goal in making offshore wind industry more efficient. Being the inventor of the SOV-concept, ESVAGT shares some of the experiences learned. For instance the importance in having a site manager offshore: - At the SOV’s our clients have their management at sea, and that makes quite a difference. When the site manager is stood at the bridge, he can experience with his own eyes, what is eating up all the hours. If for instance we wait half an hour for a technician to get ready for pick-up, instead of spending Yearbook Energy Insight 15

that time more efficiently by picking up another technician who is ready, then that is both a very obvious problem and a very easy problem to solve, Ole Ditlev Nielsen says:

Mutual benefits

“There are a lot of things, we can share in the industry. It is never going to be just one concept to rule them all, so we should see the offshore wind farms as our mutual infrastructure and work together”. Ole Ditlev Nielsen, Chief Commercial & Safety Officer at ESVAGT

16 Energy Insight Yearbook

Essentially it comes down to sharing a mindset. - Firstly; we need to know more about each-other, respect one another’s time and understand the individual priorities, Ole Ditlev Nielsen says: - Second; we need to shift our views from the current project-to-project-thinking to a broader scope. We need to see offshore wind as one infrastructure; we all share and create together. The offshore wind parks are getting closer and closer to one-another, and that brings new possibilities, if we bring the right mindset to it, he says. A good example of that is found in one of the wind parks, ESVAGT service. Every day, a CTV comes up to ESVAGT’s SOV to pick up technicians working in another park site. - The CTV is operated by one of our competitors, and the technicians it picks up are working for a company in competition with our customer. But it is in everybody’s interest: Our customer offloads some of the costs in chartering our SOV; the CTV get’s a job done, we are more efficient and the nearby park is running instead of standing still. Everybody benefits, Ole Ditlev Nielsen says. ▪

Maersk Tankers benefiting from lower oil prices

Lower oil prices are benefiting the tanker market. There are several reasons for this by k arin jensen photo: maersk tankers

With oil prices down more than 70 percent

over the past 18 months, most oil and oil related industries are under pressure. The tanker market is the exception and is in fact benefiting from the lower oil prices due to a number of factors, and with tanker rates significantly higher than what has been seen for a long time. “Since the summer of 2014 rates have been climbing upwards to levels we haven’t seen in a very long time, says Nicholas Allin Hansen, Head of Market Analytics, Business Development at Maersk Tankers. One reason is that lower oil prices boosts consumption of oil products such as petrol,

20

diesel, and jet fuel, particularly in countries with low taxes on refined products, the US being a good example. “With rising refinery production and oil consumption you also see an increased demand for transportation,” says Nicholas Allin Hansen. Another positive factor is stockpiling as refineries use the current price structure as an opportunity to stockpile – that is, they increase output beyond fundamental demand, hoping to cash in when prices have gone up sometime in the future. “The refineries are processing more volumes that the underlying consumption calls for, meaning they produce for stock, and in particular diesel,” says Nicholas Allin Hansen. The effect of strategic stockpiling is especially significant in the US and China.

Fleet size Historically, the fleet size has been growing almost uninterrupted, though at different paces. During an upturn with high cash flows and strong returns on investments, shipping companies have typically canalised the money into new tonnage. “We saw this in the years leading up to the financial crisis, where we had this commodity super cycle, where rates and volumes increased and cash was used on new vessels,” explains Nicholas Allin Hansen. In the wake of the financial crisis, however, fleet fundamentals changed and in 2014 the fleet growth fell below average. “The second half of 2014 was a good year for us with the effect of the lower oil prices starting to kick in. 2015 also looks like a good year. However, with supply growing we expect some pressure in the coming time,” says Nicholas Allin Hansen.

The lower oil prices also have lasting effects on the tanker market. In North America, for example, sales of large petrol-consuming cars is now stronger than it has been for years while sales of electric vehicles seems to be slowing somewhat because it is relatively cheaper to drive traditional cars. “These are lasting effects and even if oil prices should start to rise, people will not stop driving their newly acquired petrol-fuelled cars. “Overall, you can say that the lower oil prices have some immediate positive effects on our industry but also some positive longer term effects. And the longer the oil prices stay at these low levels, the stronger the lasting effects will become,” says Nicholas Allin Hansen. Maersk Tankers is “cautiously optimistic for 2016” with positive expectations for rates, i.e. rates are not expected to get as low as that seen in the last 5-6 years. It believes we will continue to see a lot of volatility in the market but overall, rates are positively affected by the low oil prices.

21

MAERSK TANKERS OWNS AND OPERATES A LARGE FLEET OF PRODUCT TANKERS The first tanker was acquired in 1928 and today, the Maersk Tankers fleet is one of the largest product tanker fleets in the world. Generally speaking, tankers are used for trade between regions. A very simplified version of the energy value chain is illustrated below. The energy value chain has three steps: exploration/production, refining and consumption. Tanker ships connect these three steps. There are two types of oil tankers: Crude carriers for unrefined products and product carriers for refined products. Crude tankers are mainly used for the deep sea transport of crude oil from production sites to refineries. They range between 55,000 dwt up to around 450,000 dwt. The main trading routes are from the production areas in the Arabian Gulf and West Africa to Asia, Europe and the US. Product tankers are used for transport refined products (petrol, diesel, kerosene, jet or fuel oil) to the market. These vessels range in size from 5,000 dwt to 80,000 dwt. One traditional trading route for product tankers is between North America and Europe, where petrol is carried to the US and diesel fuel is transported back to Europe. Source: Maersk Tankers

22 Energy Insight Yearbook

Improved rates and new strategy lift Maersk Tankers Maersk Tankers posted a 2015 net result of 160 million dollar, up from 132 million dollar the year before. The 2015 results were the best in many years, lifted by increasing rates and the effects from the Taking Lead cost saving strategy. Taking Leads is a five-year strategy, which was launched in 2014 and focuses on three different areas: Cost Leadership, Active Position Taking and Third Party Services. Active Position Taking looks at increasing utilisation of Maersk Tankers’ assets. “That is physically placing our vessels in the best possible market, East, West, Mediterranean, the continent, whichever market offers the best rates and from there pick the best routes and the best cargo,” explains Claus Grønborg, Vice President, Head of Business Development at Maersk Tankers. In Third Party Services Maersk Tankers operates tankers for other ship-owners. “Today we operate sixty vessels and the goal is a further one hundred within five years,” says Claus Grønborg, adding it applies its cost and position strategy for third party ships as well. “To make it attractive for others to hand over their ships to us it’s a very strong motivation to know that we can operate the ships cheaper and that we know the market thoroughly,” says Nicholas Allin Hansen. Above the strategy lies an overall goal of zero incidents. In 2014 Maersk Tankers had a record year with the lowest amount of incidents ever and in 2015 the number was even lower. “By the end of 2015 we had had 242 days without any incidents and still counting going into 2016, where we’re now approaching 300 days without incidents. This just proves that we have been able to reduce costs without jeopardising safety on board our vessels,” says Claus Grønborg. ▪ This interview was first published in November 2015. This is an updated version.

In the future, far more water will be used when the more inaccessible oil is to be pumped out of the ground. The so-called produced water must be purified of residual oil, amongst other things, before being released into the North Sea. Currently, this happens with the help of so-called hydrocyclones, but these do not completely clean the water. But now researchers from the Department of Energy Technology at Aalborg University Esbjerg have found new high-tech solutions, which can purify produced water so effectively that it is safe to drink. And not only that. Researchers at AAU Esbjerg Campus are now examining how the purified produced water can be processed and reused as water to be pumped down into the wells, in order to force out the hard-to-reach oil. Researchers in Esbjerg are working on three projects led by Associate Professor Zhenyu Yang. The first project is carried out with Maersk Oil and Ramboll Oil & Gas, with a total budget of ten million DKK. Moving forwards, the project means that we can carry out a better purification of the produced water, whilst still using the existing equipment on the platforms. – We have been committing extensive cooperations with these companies. We can use their data in our research, which can help improve future methods and technology, says Zhenyu Yang. The Obel Family Foundation has supported the second project. Here the researchers have developed a system which optimises the

24

purification using advanced filtration through ceramic membranes. The purified water can be completely free of residual oil. In the third project, research is being carried out on how the produced water can be reused for enhanced oil recovery by using smart water flooding. This project is carried out with the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Floating wind turbines Mohsen Soltani, the Associate Professor in offshore wind, has set up a floating wind turbine with his students in the new wave tank at Aalborg University - Esbjerg. With a wave and wind generator, you can create an intense storm and understand how it affects the turbine. Thereafter, new methods for wind turbine control are developed to dampen such loads on the turbine structure. Ramboll Offshore Wind is participating in this project. – Companies bring their experience and identify the needs in the future wind turbine generations, and we find scientific solutions for the problem. The synergy between the research and business world results in development of innovative designs, technologies, and methods, which will reduce the cost of offshore wind energy and eventually introduce it as an investment. This is our shared ultimate goal, says Mohsen Soltani. The floating wind turbine is just one of several projects within the field of offshore wind. There is a huge demand for research on new technologies that reduce the cost of maintenance, installation and operation of offshore turbines, says Mohsen Soltani. For example, researchers are developing heave compensation systems for the benefit of offshore services. There are many opportunities as well as challenges in the offshore energy field, and AAU is at the forefront in this field of research.

“Denmark is blessed by the fact that we’ve offshore wind to supplement the oil sector. Offshore wind has almost as many employees as oil & gas now,” Johannes Kromann Bie, interim CEO at Offshoreenergy.dk.

Collapse in crude oil prices hit Danish oil industry By K arin Jensen photo: offshoreenergy.dk

The collapse in oil prices seen over the past 18 months is beginning to take its toll on Danish oil companies, with heavy impairments, job cuts, declining investments and cost reductions Since June 2014 oil prices have plunged more than 70 per cent and is

currently around 30 dollar per barrel. “There’re a number of geopolitical factors behind the fall, US shale gas and the Iranian nuclear agreement to name but a few. “We were chocked when crude prices went below 50 dollars in late 2015 and we drank champagne when it climbed back above the 50 dollar mark. This year, however, we have seen a further drop to now around the 30 dollar level, and at these levels it really hurts,” says Johannes Kromann Bie, interim CEO at Offshoreenergy.dk. He says the Danish state’s revenue from North Sea oil, which amounted to 263 billion DKr in the period 2004-2014, will fall significantly while oil companies will see their revenues reduced sharply. “There’re some 15,-16,000 employed in the industry and this number will be reduced. So it’s very serious. You can say the expression “Burning Platform” has suddenly become topical and taken on a whole new meaning,” says Johannes Kromann Bie. Christin Kyrme Tuxen, Senior Analyst at Danske Bank, says the drop in oil prices over the past 18 months boils down to the simple 26 Energy Insight Yearbook

economics of supply and demand and should be viewed in two stages. “Since oil prices fell from above 100 dollars and to around 50 dollars by the end of 2015 it was very much driven by supply factors. The accelerated oil price decline seen since the beginning of this year, however, is more down to central banks, recession fears and concerns over the Chinese economy,” says the Danske Bank analyst. Global real economic growth and income growth have been slowing partly due to central banks repeatedly undershooting their inflation target. This has led commodity markets to start to prepare for a potential global economic recession this year, in turn leading to a significant price slump, according to Danske Bank, adding that oil producers continue to produce amid lacklustre demand and low prices. “I think the oil prices may have stabilised around the 30 dollar level. Of course it’s negative for state revenues but it’s not such a big problem for Denmark because we’re not a big exporter. It’s bad for state revenues, yes, but it’s benefiting the consumers. It’s

being balanced out,” says Christin Kyrme Tuxen. Danske Bank forecasts Brent crude to average 36 dollar/barrel in 2016 (recently revised down from 50 dollar/barrel) and 49 dollar/barrel in 2017.

DONG Energy and AP Moeller-Maersk hit by lower oil prices in 2015

Change or die

DONG Energy posted a 2015 net loss of 12.1 billion DKr, negatively impacted by impairment losses of 15.8 billion DKr. The impairment losses included a loss of 14.8 billion DKr in the Oil & Gas division, caused by continued fall in oil and gas prices, a reduction in reserve estimates and project-related factors such as the Hejre field.

Johannes Kromann Bie believes there are three types of oil companies in the current situation. First, are the oil companies that see possibilities and look at innovations and new technologies. Second, are the oil companies which enter the offshore wind industry in search of new business opportunities. “There are starting-up costs, yes, but also lots of possibilities,” says Johannes Kromann Bie. The third types are the oil companies not acting. This type of company will eventually be forced to reduce the cost base significantly. “You have to be ready for change, otherwise you die. For this reason I see a wave of consolidation and acquisitions in the oil and gas industry,” he says. ▪

Denmark’s two largest oil & gas companies, DONG Energy and AP Møller-Mærsk, have released 2015 annual reports. Both were severely hit by the lower oil prices.

Meanwhile, DONG Energy’s Wind Power unit posted an EBITDA of 6.2 billion DKr. AP Møller-Mærsk saw 2015 revenues fall by 15 per cent from the year before while net profits fell by 82 per cent to 925 million dollar from 5.2 billion dollar. The net result was negatively affected by impairments of 2.6 billion dollar in the Maersk Oil business due to lower oil price expectations.

Danish offshore sector benefiting from two-leg industry By K arin Jensen

The lower oil prices are putting a squeeze on oil companies around the world. This is the case in Denmark too. But the Danish offshore sector is benefiting from a strong offshore wind sector, with many companies operating in both sectors In Norway, one of the world’s largest exporters of oil and gas, more than 30,000 jobs have been lost in the offshore industry while investments fell by about 16 per cent in 2015 from the year before, to just below 150 billion NKr. And investments are expected to decline every year until 2019, according to The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. In Denmark, oil companies are also under pressure but unlike many other oil producing countries, the Danish offshore sector has a second leg – offshore wind. “Denmark is blessed by the fact that we’ve offshore wind to supplement the oil sector. Offshore wind has almost as 30 Energy Insight Yearbook

many employees as oil & gas now,” says Johannes Kromann Bie, interim CEO at Offshoreenergy.dk. A number of oil companies have already taken the move into offshore wind, while others are on the way. “Of course there are challenges when moving into a whole new industry, but it’s the best to do in the current situation. It’s far from easy for an oil company to start up in offshore wind, but easier than starting from scratch after all. There’re many synergies between the two sectors,” says Johannes Kromann Bie. is currently in the process of building an offshore wind division. “We’re moving into offshore wind, not as novices but as a company which have operated in the energy industry for many years,” says Jørn Bue Madsen, CEO at Danbor. He stresses, however, that offshore wind is not for everyone. “If you don’t have maritime competences then this will be a very difficult road to walk. It will be uphill. And you definitely need a certain size too. Larger scope matters and size matters,” says Jørn Bue Madsen. Future offshore wind farms will be much larger in size and further from shore, making it a real challenge to reach the wind farms and do service and maintenance work there. “That’s one of the areas where we see large synergies between the two sectors. In future there’ll be permanent installations at offshore wind farms, subsea stations and accommodation platforms for example, and we can really use our offshore experience and competences there,” says Jørn Bue Madsen. A total of 3,392MW of new offshore wind capacity was connected to the grid in 2015, bringing total offshore wind installations to just over 12GW, according to GWEA. In Germany alone, 2.3MW of new offshore wind capacity was grid-connected in 2015. ▪ Yearbook Energy Insight 31

Danbor chasing new opportunities in offshore wind It started with the acquisition of Øer A/S last year. Now Danbor is building an offshore wind business which will be firmly based on the DNA of Øer coupled with a strong focus on the needs of the offshore wind industry By K arin Jensen · photo: danbor

Danbor, a fully owned subsidiary of the Norwegian

NorSeaGroup, is in the process of building an offshore wind business. After having acquired the Danish wind power group Øer last autumn, Danbor now has new competences in-house. “Our new offshore wind division will be based on the DNA of Øer. “Øer is well-known for its first class quality and excellent track-record in HSEQ as well as it has strong competences in installation, service and maintenance of wind turbines,” says Jørn Bue Madsen, chief executive at Danbor. On top of Øer’s competences are the obvious synergies from both Danbor and NorSeaGroup and their yearlong experiences from the offshore energy and maritime industries. “It will be a strong holistic business, but it’ll be firmly based on core competences from the offshore wind industry. To that, we add the synergies from Danbor and NorSeaGroup, such as port logistic services, maritime competences, subsea operations, service vessels and marine coordination. Furthermore, we’re very experienced at servicing permanent installations at sea,” says Jørn Bue Madsen. The Danbor CEO stresses that the offshore wind business will have a strong focus on the needs and

32

requirements of the offshore wind industry. From that will be developed synergies with existing competences. “With the offshore wind competences and track records of Øer as the core, we can add customer value. We offer added value within marine engineering design and operations, sub-sea services, marine and vessel coordination, transportation of goods to the offshore wind farms and base and port logistic services. We can configure the appropriate services and service packages for all customers in the offshore wind value chain,” he says.

Wind Centre of Excellence Late last year, Danbor was appointed Wind Centre of Excellence (WCOE) in the NorSeaGroup and Morten Basse Jensen was named head of WCOE as well as CEO of Øer. As a platform for focussed market, business and service development, NorSeaGroup has defined a number of Centres of Excellence. Danbor is defined as Wind Centre of Excellence and as such it is the platform for the development of the wind activities in NorSeaGroup, Morten Basse Jensen explains. “First of all we’re talking to our customers to discuss their needs and future requirements. We’re looking at the competences and possibilities that we have in the group. Furthermore, we’ll try to identify potential acquisitions and analyse whether we need any additional compe-

tences, to ensure that we’ll be able to meet the requirements,” he adds. With regard to new acquisitions, Danbor will be evaluating opportunities in the wind industry and look at companies that will supplement the group’s value chain. “But that’s about as detailed as we can be at this time”. “The customer approach is very important to us and we’re keen to discuss synergy and cost reduction. The solid offshore wind experiences and the track- record of Øer bring us, together with our many additional competences and experiences, to a wind value proposition,” says Morten Basse Jensen.

Great expectations for offshore wind Danbor’s ambitious plan to expand in offshore wind energy is very much based on the growth expectations for the industry. According to Danbor, EU’s Joint Research Centre assesses that the market for offshore wind in the North Sea will grow to 112 GW in 2030, or ten times in just 15 years. Furthermore, the results from COP21 in Paris at the end of 2015 just add to expectations to growth in the wind market in respect of investments, number of installations and employees. “The results from COP21 have given new strength to the wind market. We now know that this is the way the world wants to go and it shows a clear political signal of strength. It’s very positive,” says Jørn Bue Madsen. Danbor’s offshore wind business plans to be a global player. “Our prime focus is on Europe for now, but we’ll also look towards the US and Asia in the near future,” says the Danbor CEO. ▪

So far it is very much Europe leading the way in offshore wind installations but this may change in coming years, with especially the US and some Asian countries beginning to look interesting.

Last year was a record-year for both financing and grid-connected offshore wind installations in Europe, which is expected to continue to lead in coming years. After 2020, the US and Asia will be on the move

European offshore wind still leads but new markets emerging By K arin Jensen

Last year was a good year for offshore wind in Europe

with just over 3GW of new capacity coming online, bringing total grid-connected installations to just over 11GW. At the same time, investments in offshore wind doubled from the year before to 13.3 billion euro and according to EWEA, 2015 was a record year for both financing and grid-connected installations. By 2020, EWEA forecasts more than 20GW of grid-connected installed capacity in Europe. “Danish companies have a competitive advantage because we’ve had a head start in the offshore wind industry. We’ve gained experience over a long period of time and are now in a very strong position to compete internationally and benefit from the early start,” says Martin Risum Bøndergaard, senior advisor at the Danish Wind Industry Association (DWIA).

Germany led the way in 2015 Germany led the way in 2015 with 2.3MW of grid-connected installations but this was primarily due to bot36 Energy Insight Yearbook

tleneck issues. A large part of the capacity was already installed, but not connected to the grid. “In 2015 a very large amount of capacity was grid-connected but it also means that 2015 looks unusually strong and 2016 will see a slowdown in terms of grid-connections,” says Martin Risum Bøndergaard. The UK and the Netherlands were also large contributors in 2015 with 556MW and 180MW, respectively. From 2017-2020 DWIA forecasts grid-connected installations of 3GW per year in Europe. Apart from the big two, Germany and the UK, it will be the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Denmark delivering market volume. After 2020, the outlook is more blurry in Europe. Because of the very long lead-time in offshore wind – it often takes around five years from a project is initiated till grid-connection -- now is a good time for politicians to start planning in the years after 2020, believes DWIA. “It’s beginning to be an increasing problem for the industry that we don’t know what will happen after

2020. The EU has told member-states to start preparing climate- and energy-plans for the years toward 2030 and the discussion in member-states over the next year or two will be very important in terms of visibility for the market,” says Martin Risum Bøndergaard.

The US and Asia warming up So far it is very much Europe leading the way in offshore wind installations but this may change in coming years, with especially the US and some Asian countries beginning to look interesting. A few demonstration projects are under way in the US and Asia, but after 2020 things are expected to kick-off. “There’s a big potential in the US and we’ve high expectations for this market after 2020. The same goes for Asia, where we’ve seen ambitious signals off the coast of China, Taiwan and possibly Japan. “After 2020, and the entire decade until 2030, it will not just be European markets driving demand but we

also expect significant contributions from the US and Asia,” he says. In the US and in China, consumption centres are located on the coasts and offshore wind is therefore beginning to look like a more profitable option, especially as costs are coming down. In China, for example, wind capacity is installed onshore and fortunes are spent bringing the electricity to the cities along the coast. “It’s a trade-off each country must consider and that’s why it’s so important to show that costs of offshore wind are falling significantly. These countries will want to look at Europe to see how it’s done,” says Martin Risum Bøndergaard. Although cost reductions in offshore wind have been a theme for a long time now, it is still an essential factor in the industry. “The Horns Rev 3 licensing round is really important in this context. It’s one of those success stories we need to show that prices are falling significantly,” says the DWIA advisor. ▪ Yearbook Energy Insight 37

Djurs Wind Power cluster network eyeing new growth in Hull By K arin Jensen

More and more companies in the offshore wind supply chain join forces to improve chances of securing contracts for largescale projects. The Djurs Wind Power cluster network has just reached an agreement with the British Chamber of Commerce in Denmark, which assists the Green Port Hull project

40

The Djurs Wind Power cluster network was formed in

connection with the establishment of the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm and now consists of 32 partners and 1,200 employees. There are two reasons for going together in a cluster network in the offshore wind industry, explains Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen, head of networks at Djurs Wind Power. “One reason is the customer side, the owners of the projects, who will gain access to a full and complete supply chain, making things much easier for them. The other reason is that many suppliers are small- or medium-sized companies with less than 250 employees and far smaller than the very large players in the market,” she elaborates. By joining forces in a cluster, the companies will become part of a large unit, which will be a more attractive partner in the market. “It’s not just a matter of securing large contracts. You become more interesting as a partner if you can offer a wide range of services,” says Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen.

Huge potential in Hull In the north-east of England is Hull, the new growth-area in offshore wind where more than 13GW of offshore wind will be established in coming years. The project, called Green Port Hull, is of great interest to Danish companies.

For this reason, Djurs Wind Power has reached an agreement with British Chamber of Commerce in Denmark to strengthen relations between Danish and British partners and help create growth in both countries. “We have entered this agreement with British Chamber of Commerce because we’re interested in getting to know potential new customers across the North Sea. We believe the chances of entering this market are far greater when we do it as a cluster network rather than going alone,” says Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen, adding risks are also far smaller when you work together while market penetration is quicker and easier. The first part of the cooperation kicked off in late January, when a UK delegation from the Humber-Hull region and British Chamber of Commerce participated in an official reception at the Grenaa city hall followed by a dinner and information meeting with 45 companies from Jutland, including the Djurs Wind Power network. Next stage will be a two-day delegation trip to Hull, visiting the Green Port Hull project as well as local companies. “The British Chamber of Commerce has worked as a door-opener for creating new contacts in a very short time. On the other hand, Danish companies have an excellent reputation in the industry, which of course is why we’re interesting to them,” says Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen. The Djurs Wind Power network will be looking at contracts in Hull in a variety of areas. “It’s everything, from lighting equipment to manpower for the installation phase and surveyors to measure the site. Basically, we’re talking the entire supply chain and Denmark has a number of different competences as well as we cover the entire spectrum,” she says. ▪

DTU Wind Energy plans 2nd stage of offshore wind farms project planning tool DTU Wind Energy’s streamlined project planning tool for offshore wind farms is now being commercialised. An upgrade of the tool, involving strategic planners, is already in the pipeline By K arin Jensen · photo: dtu

Last year, at the EWEA Offshore conference in Copenha-

gen, DTU Wind Energy presented a new tool intended for streamlining the project planning of offshore wind farms with the aim of bringing down costs and make electricity cheaper. The tool, EERA-DTOC, involved gathering all the different models that exist to calculate how and where a wind farm can best be established at an offshore site. It provides information on various factors, from wind conditions, amount of electricity being produced, how many cables needed and how to best connect to the grid. “We started the project after a call from the EU, which saw a need for making the planning process of offshore wind farms cheaper,” says Charlotte Bay Hasager, project manager at the EERA-DTOC project. A total of 21 different partners from all over Europe were involved in the project, with roughly half from 48 Energy Insight Yearbook

EERA-DTOC – European Energy Research Alliance – Design Tool for Offshore Wind Farm Cluster German company Overspeed has taken over commercial operation of the tool. DONG Energy, Vattenfall and E.ON have all contributed data from their wind farms. A total of eight different tools have been merged, but the interface is open, which means it can be modified as required – and more models will be added in time. A number of the models have been developed by DTU, the Technical University of Denmark.

academic institutions. Further to that, eight industrial partners participated in the project. “The industrial partners gave us feedback all the way through, advising us how to work with the models to make it valuable for the industry,” says Charlotte Bay Hasager. An IT firm is now working with the model, trying to make it a commercial software product for the offshore wind industry.

Next step – the strategic planners The project, which ran over 3½ years, is now completed and DTU Wind Energy is already long in the planning of the next step, which will include input from strategic planners, such as the Danish Energy Agency. The strategic planners were also involved in the first project as advisors, providing input on where to locate new offshore wind farms to give best value for society while protecting the environment. “We’re planning the next step, which will see the software upgraded to include the strategic planners. They need the same information as the developers plus knowledge on environmental conditions, subsea conditions and climate. These are the three most important factors for an offshore wind farm tender,” says Charlotte Bay Hasager. If successful with the new tool, Dr. Hasager believes it could be used by strategic planners in future when new tenders are being prepared.

“In Denmark, for example, should we build a Kriegers Flak 2, Horns Rev 4 or Anholt 2? And should Anholt 2 be located north of south of the existing Anholt site? At some stage the Horns Rev 1 offshore wind farm will have to be decommissioned and the question is whether we should build a Horns Rev 4 or perhaps build something else in a different location. This tool can answer these questions,” she explains. The ambition for the next stage of the project is to have a total solution for developers and strategic planners. “I’ve no doubt that it is possible to make this tool, the question is whether we can raise the funding to carry out the task. We’re handing in an application for funding and hope to start the new project later this year,” says Charlotte Bay Hasager. ▪ Yearbook Energy Insight 49

Decommissioning in Denmark is a long time coming By K arin Jensen

When a North Sea oil platform is no longer economically viable, it must be taken down. In the UK and in Norway, decommissioning of oil platforms has begun, but in Denmark, nothing is happening yet. Semco Maritime has long prepared for decommissioning of oil platforms and sees a great potential

50 Energy Insight Yearbook

It has been the talk of the industry for many

years now, but so far decommissioning of oil platforms in the Danish section of the North Sea has been a long time coming. Kick-off of this potentially very lucrative business segment has continuously been delayed and postponed, with rising oil prices making it a better strategy to prolong the life of the oil field. Even after the collapse in oil prices, there are still no requests for decommissioning work. “There is certainly a potential there but so far there are no concrete projects on the

cals and oil must be secured to prevent leakages. Then everything needs to be taken apart bit by bit and removed by crane and sailed to a place where it can be separated into smaller parts,” he says. The actual dismantling of the platform also requires environmental approvals just as thorough environmental studies are required before discommissioning can begin.

Semco Maritime in a strong position for decommissioning work With 500-600 offshore employees and year-long experience with the oil & gas industry, Semco Maritime is in a strong position to participate in decommissioning work once it starts up in the Danish continental shelf. A number of elements from building the installations can be directly transferred to the decommissioning. “We can assist the customer in the entire planning process and in preparing the installation to be taken onshore. There will be lots of work to do offshore to prepare for the lift. All electric installations must be unplugged to avoid sparks and explosions, for example. The entire shutting down of the platform is where I see Semco Maritime being involved,” says Carsten Nielsen. Once decommissioning gets started, Semco Maritime will also have the advantage of knowing the customers from previous work as well as it has in-depth knowledge of the industry. Safety, a key issue in offshore, is another thing which is vital. “We won’t need to take new courses because the safety part is the same whether you install a platform or dismantle it. Safety and environmental issues will be key issues in discommissioning,” says Nielsen.

horizon. We’ve tried to prepare for this new market but it’s difficult. There’s been a lot of talk for many years now, but nothing is happening,” says Carsten Nielsen, vice president at Semco Maritime’s Wind, Oil & Gas division. Semco Maritime has in cooperation with Ramboll looked into decommissioning in order to establish which services to offer customers once the market kicks off. Nielsen says it is potentially an interesting market, with a lot of work to be done both offshore and onshore as well as the entire planning process. “Wells need to be shut down and filled with concrete to avoid oil spilling into the sea. The topside has a lot of electric installations which must be unplugged, chemi-

UK and Norway on the move Decommissioning has begun in both the UK and Norway. Even though the UK market for decommissioning is approximately ten times bigger than the Danish market it is not a market, which is easy to enter for a Danish company. “I think it will be wise to try out Denmark first before we look at bigger markets. “No doubt the UK is ahead of Denmark when it comes to decommissioning but it’s the big international companies dominating there. We and other smaller Danish companies should perhaps look at entering a partnership to get a slice of the cake there,” he says. ▪ Yearbook Energy Insight 51

Fitness tests are the new thing in offshore wind By K arin Jensen · photo: Offshore Medicalcenter

Safety standards are high when working in the offshore sector. The latest thing is a fitness test for employees working at the offshore wind farms

Before going offshore to work in the oil & gas or wind

industry, a thorough medical test is needed. A health certificate is required by law to work offshore but many offshore wind companies are also asking their employees to undergo a fitness test. And it all boils down to one thing – safety. “I look at things such as heart problems, arrhythmias, overweight, blood clots, arteriosclerosis and diabetes. What we’re mostly concerned about is sudden health issues, where you can be in danger, not just to yourself but others too,” says Sanne Knutzen, GP and owner of Offshore Medical Centre in Esbjerg. Offshore Medical Centre provides health certification for employees in the offshore and seafarer industries. Sanne Knutzen explains that it is important to be in good health when working offshore, not least because of the long evacuation time. “If you’re working on an offshore wind farm there may be just two people there and your partner needs to be very fit if he’s to get a sick person down from a

turbine. You should always ask the question, can we help each other?” she says. In addition to the required health certificates, more and more companies in the offshore wind sector are also asking their employees to undergo fitness tests. There are two types of fitness tests: the first is a step test where you measure a person’s fitness rating. The second is a fitness test on an exercise bike with EKG monitoring to establish whether there are any arrhythmias. “You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to work in offshore wind but you have to be reasonably fit and not smoke too many cigarettes,” says Sanne Knutzen, adding that employees are very positive towards the fitness tests, some even using it as a motivation to lose weight or stop smoking. The fitness tests have been a requirement in the Swedish offshore wind sector for a while and Renewable UK recommends the fitness tests too. In Denmark it is still quite new but some of the larger companies such as DONG Energy have implemented the tests for their offshore wind workers. “The industry is aiming high and I think it’s very positive. It makes a lot of sense when working at great highs to be in good shape,” says Doctor Knutzen. ▪

Falck Safety Services offers a wide range of safety courses for offshore

Hundreds of different courses are on offer for both the oil & gas and offshore wind sectors, ranging from compulsory courses and courses required by the industry to customised courses by k arin jensen 路 photo: Falck Safety Service

56

Whether it is compulsory courses or

customised courses, Falck Safety Services offers both training and consulting. Focus is on how to prevent, manage and learn from critical situations and events using only expert professionals. “We currently have 36 training centres globally and they’re all located either where the oil industry is placed, or where the oil industry discharges from. In Denmark, the centre is in Esbjerg,” says Anders Kjærgaard, Managing Director at Falck Safety Services. American military studies on emergency helicopter landings at sea, have shown that the chances of survival increases to 96 per cent if you have undergone the appropriate training, according to Kjærgaard, adding

that this just proves why safety is vital in the offshore sector. “The Esbjerg centre is special and has a lot more to offer than most other centres. Being an old firefighter school, we can offer numerous courses in fire training, such as fire on offshore installation, high pressure and low pressure gas, advanced fire training and full scale fire,” says Anders Kjærgaard. At the centre, elements of an oil platform and refineries have been recreated in order to practise extinguishing a real fire in real circumstances. “You never become really good unless you’ve had the chance to try it for real,” he says. Apart from all the required safety courses for the oil & gas and offshore wind industry – including fire training, rescue at height, sea survival -- Falck Safety Services also offers a variety of other courses, for example chemical training. “The Esbjerg centre is one of the few that can actually offer training in how to handle a real ammonia leak,” says Anders Kjærgaard.

Yearbook Energy Insight 57

Course participants at Falck Safety Services must go through fire and water to prepare for the challenges in the offshore industry.

Consultancy is another important task for Falck Safety Services, for example Verification of Competences where it visits the offshore company onside and its instructors verify the competences of the employees. “Contingency plans are another area where we help companies. Not just how to handle the actual incident, but planning the entire process, handling press and relatives. The plan needs to be thoroughly tested and we can even help develop it, perhaps in connection with a large-scale drill,” says Anders Kjærgaard.

Professional instructors All instructors at Falck Safety Services are professionals with experience from the industries and areas they teach in. “First-aid instructors are paramedics in their daily work, instructors in fire training are real fire fighters. And if you teach in oil and gas, you have a background in this industry,” says Anders Kjærgaard. The employees at Falck Safety Services are a mix of permanent staff and part-time employees, for example a part-time instructor working as a paramedic during the day. “This helps us stay sharp. Every day we’ve people coming in with updated experiences from the real world and this lifts our permanent staff too,” says Anders Kjærgaard. ▪

Innovation will secure the winning bid By Arne Storm 路 photo: universal foundation

Yearbook Energy Insight 61

Change is on the horizon. Suction technology aims to play a key role to introduce sustainable change, cut costs and help developers stay in front of competition

Energy Insight has consulted Kristian Ascanius Jacobsen, Head of Business Development at Universal Foundation, to get a view on the competitive landscape in offshore wind and how suction buckets are spearheading change in the foundation market.

Changes in how offshore wind projects are being offered to the market have accelerated the move to a far more competitive landscape than just a few years ago. The Danish model resulted in a record low bid in the Horns Rev 3 tender. The Dutch system draws inspiration from their Danish counterparts. The first UK competitive tender based on Contracts for Difference (CfD) for the Round 3 projects saw strike prices well below Round 2 levels. And the German sector clearly makes a move towards a 62 Energy Insight Yearbook

competitive tender model. The industry is well under way to meet the target of 30% reduction in levelised cost of energy for offshore wind. Great news no doubt. To the public change means lower electricity prices. To the developers and supply chain change means a maturing and sustainable industry. But when revenue streams are cut by 30%, project stakeholders are facing the challenge to balance reasonable investor returns on one hand with sustainability and profitability in the supply chain on the other. The focal point is to ensure that the bids are low enough to qualify for the capacity. In a market predominantly controlled by two major turbine providers, the developer is left with little head room to secure the competitive edge by

creating competition in this part of the supply chain. If the tender strategy is based on conventional balance of plant foundation technology one would in today’s market opt for the industry darling: the monopile. By taking the conventional road, the ticket to secure projects can be by outsmarting the market e.g. based on superior buying power, superior engineering skills, and smart financial structures. Nevertheless, even with this considered the playing field remains fairly even, with some developers pursuing an alternative path, gaining additional advantage over the competition by introducing innovative, lower cost elements to the project offering. “Our strategy clearly targets a market where innovation is a key element to drive costs down. Naturally, this must complement other more traditional initiatives. No

doubt that our offering, the Mono Bucket foundation, is receiving increased attention in this more competitive landscape. If all developers base their bids on the same basic assumptions, they end up on par. Innovation will help them stay in front without compromising the investors return. The Mono Bucket is one of more alternatives in the market poised to challenge the more conventional foundations. Universal Foundation has been in the market since 2001 and is the first company to deploy suction buckets to support a wind turbine and has also proven the concept feasibility on met. masts in the harshest offshore working conditions. Most recently, 29 trial installations were completed in a record breaking 24 days at the major project zones Dudgeon, Dogger Bank and Hornsea. The Yearbook Energy Insight 63

technology relies on a suction assisted installation technique; a technique also identified by Dong Energy during their tests of the Suction Bucket Jacket foundation at the offshore wind project Borkum Riffgrund 1. “Dong Energy’s move towards suction technology only cements our own belief in the concept. We happily congratulate other companies on their successes using suction bucket technology in offshore wind projects. This clearly paves the way for a broader acceptance in the industry – from engineers to bankers.” Certainly, the innovative playing field is not without boundaries. Bankability is of the essence to see innovation introduced to project. “It goes without saying that one cannot blindly pursue innovation. Suction buckets have seen large scale deployment in oil & gas with more than 2,000 installations worldwide. The Mono Bucket extends this legacy into offshore wind. We are very much aware that the application is quite different for offshore wind turbines compared to heavy, static topsides, so extensive trials and testing since 2001 have been designed to de-risk the major areas of concern. We now have the most mature alternative to the conventional market offering”. Suction assisted installations hold some key additional benefits inherent to the technology. Noise limits during installation are more tightly controlled in German waters, are an increasing challenge to the market. Suction offers a completely noise free installation process and eliminates the uncertainty and hassle connected to traditional piling campaigns, at a much lower cost.” From an environmental lifetime impact perspective the technology makes it possible to fully decommission the foundation after 25 years in operation. “Decommissioning of offshore wind turbine foundations requires more focus. The industry will only fully realise the challenge the day projects are starting to be decommissioned. That day is just around the corner, and suction buckets will play an instrumental role to a more sustainable ‘cradle to grave’ consideration.” So does one size fit all? “We believe in an industry where projects will have to decide the most optimal solutions for the specific project. Given the very varied site conditions across projects, multiple foundation concepts will continue to play a role in the market.” “The shift in the market to an increasingly more competitive playing field, drive our clients towards innovation to gain the edge. The Mono Bucket and suction buckets in general will provide that edge without setting off into completely uncharted territory. And as an additional, yet highly important upside to lower cost, it provides a noise free and a more environmentally sustainable solution to the conventional foundations.” ▪ 64 Energy Insight Yearbook

Unless you live near a wind turbine factory and see the giant nacelles being transported regularly, you’ve probably only seen them sitting on top of the towers – either out at sea or, of course, on land. So, you’ve probably not given much thought to how they get there In a cost-conscious industry, it’s clear that using the

lowest cost transport method to get products to their destination is high up on the agenda. But it’s not just a question of moving things from A to B: there is just as great a need for logistics and supply chains, right from the outset of the manufacturing process. At DSV, all of our divisions and our projects team are involved in the energy industry all around the world. We ship by air, sea, road and, increasingly, by rail, and our solutions division has the expertise in warehousing and supply chain innovation that can keep costs down. Take, for example, the need to supply spare parts to an oil refinery or a wind turbine farm. It’s no good if those parts are made on the other side of the world and take weeks to deliver, leaving oil production or electricity generation offline. Instead, we can help to identify what we call the ‘centre of gravity’ in a region, and set up a local warehouse or distribution centre close to the final destinations. Thus, those weeks of transit time don’t mean weeks of downtime – the transit effectively becomes a moving warehouse, and a slow ship can be used – and ships are the lowest cost method of transport. Air freight is the most expensive option, but by far the fastest. On occasion, something will need to be flown urgently, but by establishing an efficient, flexible supply chain, the need for those expensive flights will be minimised. Rail transport might be a good compromise 66 Energy Insight Yearbook

in some situations, especially as it can be very environmentally friendly if the locomotive is electric – a greener alternative to air freight. The key point is that as an ‘asset light’ freight forwarder, DSV can negotiate the best deals with many different shipping companies, thus providing customers with the best possible value for money each time. With the recent acquisition of UTi, DSV is now the fourth largest transport and logistics company in the world with a presence in 80 countries, 40,000 employees and 4.7 million square metres of warehouse space. Shipping out finished products and handling spare parts is not the only part of the supply chain that needs optimisation. Inbound to the assembly plants is just as important, especially with just-in-time manufacturing. Transit from component suppliers to factories also needs innovative solutions, and there is often an overlap between inbound and outbound logistics: not all compo-

nents need to go to the factory. Some can go straight from the supplier to the end user. Let’s look at an example of how supply chains can be optimised to keep costs for the industry down. A supplier is contracted to deliver a certain number of components to a turbine assembly plant per month. The rate of use of the components means that only one container load is needed per month. However, the assembly plant does not want to take up valuable floor space, storing up to a month’s worth of those components, because they cannot be delivered more frequently than once a month if the supplier has to fill a container each time. A full container is less expensive per component than a partly loaded container, so a more frequent delivery rate will mean that the shipping costs will be too high. Looking at the logistics with a 360 degree view, it could be that

there are savings to be made by renting storage space near the assembly plant. Full containers could be shipped to the rented warehouse once a month. Warehouse staff can then unpack the container and store the components. The assembly plant’s just-in-time manufacturing then generates an order for the components as needed, and transporting them over to the plant can be done in small batches. There are many factors which come into play, and ultimately it is the analysis of all of these factors which will allow a decision to be made to optimise cost, logistics and storage. DSV has worked with the energy industry for many years, and has the know-how for offshore working, too. The combination of flexible transport solutions and innovative supply chain logistics will, we hope, continue to benefit the industry for many more years to come. ▪ Yearbook Energy Insight 67
