varies from one film per year to average 5 to 8 feature fiction films annually. Most of the productions are low budget, and film makers struggle to keep their professional practise alive. Nevertheless, the number of awards that our films have already gotten at international festivals is amazing. We bring to you a selection of 44 films that have won about 300 awards all together.

Stop nonstopped flow of stories, choose one! A word by artistic director Rada Sesic The great artist and intellectual Susan Sontag, in her essay on writing, points out something intriguing: “We are all experiencing nowadays: by presenting us with a limitless number of nonstopped stories, the narratives that the media relate to – the consumption of which has so dramatically cut into the time the educated public once devoted to reading – offer a lesson in amorality and detachment that is directly opposite to the one embodied by the enterprise of the novel.” For the word – reading – in Sontag’s essay, we can draw a parallel to watching. The media landscape nowadays that is driven by commercial interest including not only entertainment but news 4

Echoing Walter Benjamin’s ideas on “how storytelling transmutes information into wisdom”, we ensure you that in our program you will not only be informed about the current situation in Europe – for example more specifically in the Balkans, in Turkey, Ukraine or Georgia and its neighbours – but also will be stimulated to engage in ascending towards a higher level of understanding of how to deal with all the news concerning Europe today. programs as well, is taking us away from what cinema storytelling used to be in the golden times of socially relevant films in Europe. Six fantastic films, six amazing, very disturbing but also hopeful stories!

seem that it is not for us to identify with particular film characters whose life styles and destinies are remote from us. Good stories stimulate our imagination and good art is there to lift people up, to inspire them, not to bring them down. Following this thought, we strive to find engaging, inspirational and uplifting films for you.

Our steady followers will notice that we evolve every year. This time, we have developed our educational program; we collaborate with several schools and universities in The Hague, Utrecht, Haarlem and Leiden. In our new program Film in Class, we bring cinema closer to the youth but also to their teachers. We make a special effort to increase the number of our professional guests, knowing that our Q&A sessions are, next to the films, highlights of every edition of our festival. Current engaging cinema, ENFF Discoveries and Docs Talk are main festival chapters that we are especially proud of.

This year’s edition consists of 44 exciting films; long, short, fiction, documentaries, animation, cinematic experiments, debuts as well as works by masters. They all make this year’s program relevant, strong and memorable. We have included films from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, mostly from the countries that are not yet EU members or are new relatives of the EU family. Cinema production in those countries

We screen films, have talks and debate on European urgent topics. We invite you also to have fun together with us, to dine and try the regional cuisine, taste the local wines and to engage in the debate. ENFF is there for you. Welcome! 5

Synopsis The search for real love is often a lonely path strewn with all sorts of situations from embarrassing to funny. Love is the universal force that pastry-shop worker Verica, opera singer Brankica, Martin, a Spaniard, two nurses who think a lot about men, one farmer with rather unusual farming talents, a gravely ill woman of an unusual sexual orientation and a handyman who adores all ‘pretty women’ have in common. An accidental series of events will intertwine their destinies and make unsolvable situations solvable.

De zoektocht naar ware liefde is vaak een eenzame weg met allerlei emoties en situaties – van beschamend tot grappig. Liefde is de universele kracht die banketverkoper Verica, operazangeres Brankica, Spanjaard Martin, twee verpleegkundigen die veel aan mannen denken, een boer met nogal ongewone landbouwtalenten, een ernstig zieke vrouw met een bijzondere seksuele geaardheid en een klusjesman die dol is op alle ‘mooie vrouwen’ met elkaar gemeen hebben. Synopsis Milena, a middle-aged wife and mother, is living comfortably in an upscale neighbourhood of Belgrade. She quietly tends to her looks, dutifully cooks and entertains her friends. But unsettling realities are beginning to seep into her when she finds out about the hidden past of her seemingly ideal husband. She begins an awakening from the suburban paradise she had thought to live in. The film has won numerous professional awards, amongst them the Golden Arena at Pula Film Festival. Karanovic, diva of the regional cinema and drama theatre, is also professor of acting at Belgrade’s Academy of Arts as well as a prominent human rights activist. She won the Winning Freedom Award for women promoting human rights, rule of law, democracy and tolerance. 8

Milena, een vrouw en moeder van middelbare leeftijd, heeft een comfortabel leven in een chique wijk van Belgrado. Ze verzorgt haar uiterlijk, kookt plichtsgetrouw en entertaint haar vrienden. Maar de verontrustende werkelijkheid dringt tot haar door wanneer ze het verborgen verleden van haar schijnbaar ideale man ontdekt. Haar leven blijkt niet zo rooskleurig te zijn als ze dacht. Deze film won vele prijzen, onder meer een Golden Arena van het Pula Film Festival. Een serie gebeurtenissen verandert een rustige, introverte jongen uit een afgelegen adoptiecentrum in een woeste leider van een groep meedogenloze jongeren die besluit om wraak te nemen op de wereld die hen heeft geschaad.

Synopsis Phillip, a marginalised, abandoned teenager from a desolated suburban juvenile adoption center, is forced by a corrupt police inspector to participate in a terrifying encounter that leads to severe consequences. Despite the futile attempts of his teacher – the only caring educator in the center – to help out and put light on this incident in a country where power determines justice, Phillip emerges as a ferocious leader of a group of lost boys who embrace the path of violence. It takes them deep into the catacombs of the criminal underworld. Director Tozija has graduated at the Faculty of Drama Arts in Skopje, Film and TV directing but also studied law and political science. He evidently knows very well how to deal with the topic of local society confronted with youth delinquency and corruption on a highest level.

Hij wordt door een corrupte politie-inspecteur gedwongen tot een angstaanjagende ontmoeting die ernstige gevolgen heeft. Zijn leraar – de enige zorgzame opvoeder in het centrum – probeert hem te helpen het voorval te begrijpen in de context van dit land waar de mensen met macht bepalen wat gerechtigheid is. Desondanks ontpopt Phillip zich tot een woeste leider van een groep ‘lost boys’ die geweld niet schuwt. Dit leidt hen tot in de diepe gronden van de criminele onderwereld. Regisseur Tozija studeerde naast film en regie ook rechten en politieke wetenschappen. Hij weet als geen ander het onderwerp van de lokale samenleving die wordt geconfronteerd met jeugdcriminaliteit en corruptie te benaderen en behandelen. 9

Gezim is an expert at escaping the past and now he wants to flee Kosovo, without Nori. But the boy tries everything in his means to prevent his dad from leaving. An accident results. The shocked father takes Nori to the hospital. When Nori gets out, his father is gone. Angry, yet determined, Nori sets out on a perilous journey and indeed finds his father in Germany.

Tienjarige Nori en zijn vader Gezim verdienen hun brood met de verkoop van sigaretten in het vooroorlogse Kosovo van de jaren â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90. Gezim, iemand die altijd wegloopt van zijn verleden, wil nu uit Kosovo vluchten zonder Nori. Maar de jongen probeert uit alle macht te voorkomen dat zijn vader vertrekt, wat resulteert in een ongeval. De geschokte vader gaat met Nori naar het ziekenhuis. Maar wanneer Nori uitstapt is zijn vader verdwenen. Boos, maar vastberaden, gaat Nori op een gevaarlijke reis en vindt zijn vader in Duitsland.

Winner of the Silver Bear and two more prizes at the Berlinale 2012. An intense and compelling drama that follows a day in the life of a Roma family in Hungary after a series of racist attacks on their community. The film is based on true events.

Winnaar van de Zilveren Beer en nog twee prijzen op de Berlinale 2012. Een intens en meeslepend drama dat een dag in het leven van een Romafamilie in Hongarije toont na een reeks racistische aanvallen op hun gemeenschap. De film is gebaseerd op ware gebeurtenissen.

Synopsis Mari lives with her two children and their grandfather in a shack in the woods outside the city. Their living conditions are modest, like their other Roma neighbours. The recent killings of members of five Roma families put her life on the edge. Living in fear of the racist terror that surrounds them and feeling abandoned by the silent majority, the family tries to get through the day. Working double shifts, Mari tries to earn enough money to go to Canada, where her husband has already moved to. Teenage daughter Anna tries her best to concentrate in school, while young Rio is busy doing other things. He is getting ready. This remarkable film won many awards at the major film festivals. One of the MUST SEE films of the European cinema.

Met haar twee kinderen en hun grootvader woont Mari in een hut in de bossen buiten de stad. Hun leefomstandigheden zijn bescheiden. De recente moorden op leden van vijf Roma-families zette haar leven op scherp. Terwijl ze in angst leven voor de racistische terreur om hen heen en zich in de steek gelaten voelen door de (zwijgende) meerderheid, probeert de familie de dag door te komen. Door dubbele diensten te werken probeert Mari genoeg geld te verdienen om naar Canada te gaan, waar haar man al naartoe is verhuisd. Tienerdochter Anna probeert zich te concentreren op school, terwijl de jonge Rio druk is met andere dingen. Hij bereidt zich voor. Deze opmerkelijke film won vele prijzen op de grote filmfestivals. Macedonian director, living in Canada, became known for his remarkable debut ‘Mirage’ and comes back now with another relevant and compelling human drama.

The director is certainly a strong and fresh new voice of the Serbian cinema. The film had its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.

Svetozar Ristovski, Macedonia/Croatia/Bulgaria/France, 2015, 105 min

Deze Macedonische regisseur, woonachtig in Canada, werd bekend door zijn opmerkelijke debuut ‘Mirage’. Nu is hij terug met een ander relevant en boeiend menselijk drama.

Synopsis Lazar works as a decoy who distracts the police and oversees the transfer of illegal immigrants across the border with the EU. Intelligent and discreet, he lives under the patronage of a local mobster and is able to support his family with the money he makes from trafficking. He falls in love with a young student, a stranger to his world and contemplates changing his life. But happiness is not an easy path and Lazar is faced with an impossible decision. Ristovski brought together great actors from different parts of the region for this film.

Deze regisseur is een sterke en frisse nieuwe stem van de Servische cinema. De film had zijn wereldpremière op het Cannes Film Festival in 2015.

Synopsis Lazar werkt als lokaas. Hij leidt die de politie af en houdt toezicht op de oversteek van illegale immigranten over de grens van de EU. Hij leeft, discreet, onder bescherming van een lokale gangster en is in staat om zijn gezin te onderhouden met het geld dat hij verdient aan mensenhandel. Dan wordt hij verliefd op een jonge student, iemand uit een totaal ander milieu, en hij overweegt zijn leven te veranderen. Maar de weg naar geluk is niet gemakkelijk en Lazar moet een onmogelijke beslissing nemen. Voor deze film bracht Ristovski grote acteurs uit verschillende delen van de regio bij elkaar.

Jovan starts dating Maja casually, no strings attached. But her mysterious and shady behaviour begins to disturb him. Director points out: ‘’This is a thriller depicting coming of age through a destructive love affair. It is a labyrinth of emotional and subconscious levels of this kind of relationship. I want to portray fears and pain that appear when two lovers are suppressing their emotions. It depicts how digital communication, pornography and vanity obstruct true emotions and love”. The director has been twice awarded at the Cinefondation competition of Cannes Film Festival for his short films ’Run Rabbit Run’ (2003) and ’Minus’ (2007).

Jovan begint nonchalant met Maja te daten. Maar haar mysterieuze en duistere gedrag begint hem te storen. De regisseur legt uit: ‘’Dit is een thriller over een destructieve liefdesrelatie. Het is een labyrint van emotionele en onbewuste niveaus in dit soort relaties. Ik wil angsten en pijn uitbeelden die ontstaan wanneer twee geliefden hun emoties onderdrukken. Het toont hoe de digitale communicatie, pornografie en ijdelheid ware emoties en liefde belemmeren”. Vuckovic is tweemaal bekroond met de Cinefondation competitie van Cannes Film Festival voor zijn korte film ‘Run Rabbit Run’ (2003) en ‘Minus’ (2007).

The Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski discovered her great talent for poetry and published her works, but this led to a tragic paradox: a famous poet was living in poverty, rejected by the Roma community for betraying their secrets.

Het verhaal van een ongelooflijk begaafde vrouw die haar Roma-cultuur wilde preserveren met woorden, maar daar een pijnlijke prijs voor moest betalen. De Poolse dichter Jerzy Ficowski ontdekte haar grote talent voor poëzie en publiceerde haar werk. Dit leidde tot een tragische paradox: beroemde dichter die in armoede leefde, verworpen door de Romagemeenschap voor het verraden van hun geheimen.

Synopsis Far from the bustle of Turkey’s cities few choices are available to young people. Also for the two protagonists of this story: 15-year-old shepherd girl Fidan and her groom-to-be Salih, who at 35 is intellectually even younger than Fidan. Thrust into what at first seems a tragic marriage, they slowly open up to each other, united by the feeling of loneliness and detachment from the world of the adults. The director: ‘’The film is not based on changes, but rather on awakenings. Due to the fact that it describes my own sensitivity that defines my perception and feelings, it will be the story of my own self completion. I was raised with stories of my grandmother who came from a wealthy family from Istanbul, at the age of 17, who moved to a small village of Malatya and all the hardships she had to endure. Her story, sometimes funny, sometimes heart breaking and the concept of being an outsider always intrigued me. To now grasp and convey that distant feeling means a lot to me.’’

In het binnenland van Turkije hebben jongeren niet veel te kiezen. Zo ook het 15-jarige herdermeisje Fidan en haar aanstaande bruidegom Salih, die op zijn 35ste intellectueel minder ontwikkeld is dan zij. Hun gedwongen huwelijk lijkt tragisch, maar langzaam stellen ze zich voor elkaar open, verenigd door hetzelfde gevoel van eenzaamheid en onthechting van de wereld van de volwassenen. De regisseur: ‘’Dit is een film geworden over mijn ontwikkeling. Ik ben opgegroeid met de verhalen van mijn grootmoeder, die uit een rijke familie uit Istanbul kwam en als 17-jarige naar een het dorpje Malatya verhuisde waar ze allerlei ontberingen moest verduren. Haar verhaal, soms grappig en soms hartverscheurend, heeft mij altijd geïntrigeerd. Het betekent veel voor mij dat ik in staat ben om dat gevoel te begrijpen en over te brengen.’’ 15

Being thus innocent of numerous deaths makes these mass murderers a group of people with a special psychological profile. Ilija, a 60-year-old train driver is retiring. He holds the infamous record of 28 kills committed during his career. Ilija’s son Sima is preparing to take over his father’s job. Ilija tries to prepare his son for accidents that will happen...

Volgens de statistieken rijdt elke treinbestuurder tijdens zijn carrière onbedoeld zo’n 15 tot 20 mensen dood. De slachtoffers zijn mensen die zelfmoord wilden plegen, nonchalante mensen, dronken mensen. Maar het feit dat een trein minstens 700 meter nodig heeft om tot stilstand te komen, ontheft de treinbestuurders automatisch van elke verantwoordelijkheid. We volgen hun dagelijkse leven gedurende de vier seizoenen. Elke dag raakt zij meer en meer afwezig en verloren. Cambridge is a year in the life of the local elementary school, where dedicated teachers try to give the children the best possible education with limited resources. Trajkova is well known Bulgarian director with more than 40 documentary films to her credit, her films have been globally recognized and awarded over the years.

Dolni Tsibar is een dorp in het noordwesten van Bulgarije in het armste deel van de Europese Unie. Bijna alle dorpelingen vertegenwoordigen de Roma-gemeenschap. Synopsis In 1992 a wave of refugees from the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina reached Denmark. With existing refugee camps completely full, the Red Cross pulled a giant ship into the canals of Copenhagen. The ship, Flotel Europa, became a temporary home for a thousand people waiting for decisions on their asylum applications. Among them was a 12 year old boy, Vladimir, who fled from Sarajevo. Two decades later, Tomic takes us on a journey of growing up on this ship filled with echoes of the war and other things that formed his adolescence. The coming-of-age story is juxtaposed with personal VHS archive material shot by refugees who shared the ‘space-time vacuum’ of the Flotel.

In 1992 bereikt een golf vluchtelingen uit de oorlog in Bosnië-Herzegovina Denemarken. Wegens de volle bestaande vluchtelingenkampen stelt het Rode Kruis een enorm schip (dat bij Kopenhagen voor anker komt te liggen) ter beschikking voor deze mensen. Het schip, Flotel Europa, wordt een tijdelijke thuis voor duizend mensen die wachten op beslissingen over hun asielaanvraag. Onder hen was een 12-jarige jongen, Vladimir, die uit Sarajevo was gevlucht. Twee decennia later neemt regisseur Tomic ons mee op een reis: hij toont het opgroeien op dit schip gevuld met echo’s van de oorlog en andere dingen die zijn jeugd vormden. But the border persists culturally and socially, based on historically grown resentments and the new European laws.

This female director, who also works for the prestigious international sales Dogwoof in UK, succeeded to come close to all her main characters and to build the intimate story of these teenagers with lots of skills and human understanding for their specific life position. One of the rare films that enters the world of Roma youth in this region so profoundly. The film won several awards, a. o. the Best Director Award at the Liburnia Film Festival in 2015, as well as the Audience Award and Ethics and Human Rights Jury Award at the Croatian Film Days in 2015.

Toto passionately learns dancing, reading and writing, while his sisters try to keep the family together in a world that has long forgotten what the innocence of childhood should be. The director points out: ’’An important element sustaining the story’s intimacy is the video material that Andreea shot herself, documenting their life. It is a film made with them, not only about them.’’

Tienjarige Totonel en zijn zussen Andreea (15) en Ana (17) wachten op hun moeder die wordt vrijgelaten uit de gevangenis. Terwijl ze opgroeien leren de kinderen hoe ze zelfstandig moeten overleven. Ze hopen dat hun familie wordt herenigd wanneer hun moeder terug is. Toto leert dansen, lezen en schrijven. After winning an award at the DokuFest in Prizren, this relevant and vibrant film competed at the Sarajevo Film Festival and raised lots of interesting questions among the audience.

Joegoslavië viel uiteen door een met bloed doordrenkte burgeroorlog. Het hart van het land, Bosnië en Herzegovina, leed het meest. Dit conflict van Bosniërs (moslims), Serviërs (Oostersorthodoxen) en Kroaten (katholieken) maakte honderdduizenden slachtoffers en veranderde het lot van veel mensen, die zich over de hele wereld verspreidden als vluchteling. De regisseur maakt een wereldreis en treft de toenmalige tienjarige acteurs uit zijn eerste film ver weg van hun eigen stad, verjaagd door de turbulentie van oorlog. Mitrovic vertelt: “Ik ben geboren op een filmset en had een gelukkige jeugd. En op het moment dat de sterren dichterbij leken dan ooit werd de lucht boven mij bewolkt en kwam alles tot stilstand door de oorlog. Ik stopte met dromen en ontsnapte uit een realiteit die mijn emoties verstikte en distantieerde me van de filmwereld.”

Synopsis Yugoslavia broke apart in a blood-soaked civil war. The very heart of the country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, suffered the most. This conflict of Bosniacs (Muslims), Serbs (Eastern Orthodox) and Croats (Catholics) resulted in hundreds of thousands of victims and changed the destinies of many people, dispersing them around the world as refugees. The director embarks on a world tour to find the then 10-year-old actors from his first film, scattered away from their native city by the whirlwind of war. Mitrovic points out: “I was born on a movie set and lived a happy childhood. And just when the stars seemed closer than ever, the sky above me got overcast, bringing along the war that put everything on hold. I stopped dreaming and started escaping from a reality that was suffo- cating my emotions and I`ve distanced from film.”

Mathieu Jouffre, Kosovo, 2016, 65 min

When ex-Yugoslavia began to fall apart, the Serbian regime banned Kosovar Albanians from participating in public life. Albanian employees across public institutions were fired. Albanian media outlets were closed down. Many elementary and high schools were closed to Albanian students and the entire university system was shut down. During the 1990’s in Kosovo, teaching resumed in private apartments, houses and basements stores. This documentary shows how a parallel society and reality was organized. It shows how segregation and apartheid became the norm. Besa Luci and Mathieu Jouffre wrote the script for this challenging film together. In it people are in a relaxed atmosphere: eating, drinking, chatting and revisiting vividly one of the most exciting as well as tragic periods in the history of Kosovo.

Na het winnen van een prijs op de DokuFest in Prizren was deze relevante en levendige film onderdeel van het Sarajevo Film Festival, waar het veel interessante vragen opriep bij het publiek.

Toen ex-Joegoslavië uiteen begon te vallen verbood het Servische regime Kosovaarse Albanezen deel te nemen aan het openbare leven. Albanese werknemers van openbare instellingen werden ontslagen. Albanese media werden gesloten. Veel basisscholen en middelbare scholen sloten hun deuren voor Albanese studenten en het hele universitaire systeem werd stilgelegd. Daardoor verplaatste het onderwijs voor deze mensen zich in de jaren 90 naar particuliere ruimten. Deze documentaire laat zien hoe een parallelle samenleving en de werkelijkheid ontstond. Het laat zien hoe segregatie en apartheid de norm werden. Besa Luci en Mathieu Jouffre schreven samen het scenario voor deze uitdagende film. In deze film zien we mensen in een ontspannen sfeer: ze eten, drinken, praten en kijken levendig terug op een van de meest opwindende en tegelijk tragische perioden in de geschiedenis van Kosovo. 25

Synopsis An absurd and almost unbelievable life story. Since the end of the Georgian war in 2008, the villagers of Churvaleti know that they are living on a border. Russian patrols started putting up barbed wire fences on an internationally unrecognized border line. Families and communities got divided. The barbed wire fence runs right through the village. Every other hour border patrols pass by and arrest anyone who comes close to the fence. In spite of this menace, the villagers find ways to stay in touch with their relatives and friends across the line. Life goes on, but will it ever be the same again?

Een absurd en bijna niet te geloven levensverhaal. Sinds het einde van de Georgische oorlog in 2008 weten de dorpelingen van Churvaleti dat zij op een landgrens leven. Russische patrouilles begonnen prikkeldraadafzettingen op te zetten op deze internationaal niet-erkende grens. Families en gemeenschappen raakten verdeeld. De afzetting loopt dwars door het dorp. Elke uur patrouilleren de grenswachten, die iedereen arresteren die in de buurt van het hek komt. Ondanks deze dreiging zoeken de dorpelingen naar manieren om contact te houden met hun familie en vrienden aan de andere kant de grens. Het leven gaat door, maar zal het ooit nog hetzelfde zijn?

Is there any wisdom gained from what one has observed and encountered? Lidija’s film confronts us with challenging questions. What is left of each of us once we got displaced? What happens to a family long after a war is over? Can one ensure that their children don’t have to carry their burden? In this very personal documentary, the director makes an inner journey through her memories, places and people she loves as she tries to leave her past behind her.

Synopsis In ‘Remunda’ documentary style, with lots of personal sharp observations, suitable tint of humor, charming, yet serious, the documentary contemplates on the current situation in Ukraine. Driven by curiosity and personal interest, knowing the country and having close relations with some common people, Remunda, a multi-awarded documentary author, brings to the surface the seriousness of the situation in the country where people are strongly divided by their political stands. Many families have members in both the western and eastern part of Ukraine, in cities like Kiev and Donetsk. How do they communicate and discuss Ukrainian urgent issues? During his travels, the filmmaker finds himself behind the front lines, chronicling the lives of the population in the territories controlled by separatists.

Deze documentaire reflecteert op de huidige situatie in Oekraïne; in ‘Remunda’documentairestijl, met veel persoonlijke, scherpe observaties, met charme en een vleugje humor, maar toch ernstig. Sejo, Zenit en Nele kijken terug op belangrijke gebeurtenissen en plaatsen uit de tijd van hun rockband Zabranjeno Pušenje (‘verboden te roken’ in het Bosnisch).

Synopsis The history of the famous Yugoslavian rock band through stories of its three first members, Sejo Sexon, Nele Karajlic and Zenit Djozic. Their story is emblematic of what happened in Yugoslavia in the last 30 years. The film revisits the time of New Primitivism, famous TV show Top Lista Nadrealista and old concerts of Zabranjeno pusenje. The documentary provides great archive material, old important stories that help us understand the spirit of the time when the movement New Primitivism was founded. It was a subcultural movement established in Sarajevo in 1983 that, as a form of expression, used primarily music, comic sketches and witty dialogues in their shows on radio and television. They were openly critical, sharp and always entertaining. Their topics evolved around small, common Bosnian men and they could precisely spot weak points of the Yugoslav society with humour and a sting. 30

Lule Bib Luka is 77-year-old and one of the last sworn virgins (burrnesha) in Albania. In this ancient tradition women never marry and take on a male role. Lule sacrificed a conventional female life to take care of the lands of her father. Her oath of celibacy sealed her life’s fate. She lived with her brother Kole and his family her entire life. Her nephews have grown up and moved away and her brother died. Now, Lule is the only one left on the land, but she prepares to move to town because the hard mountain life has become too much for her. During her last summer in Tuc, Lule revisits the important places in her personal history. The Rotterdam based director managed to bring emotional state of the main character so well to the screen that we carry this film with us long after watching it..

Lule Bib Luka is 77-jaar oud en één van de laatste gezworen maagden (burrnesha) in Albanië. In deze oude traditie trouwen vrouwen niet en nemen ze een mannelijke rol aan. Lule offerde een gebruikelijk vrouwelijk leven om voor het land van haar vader te zorgen. Haar celibataire eed verzegelde haar lot. Haar hele leven woonde ze in bij haar broer Kole en zijn familie. Haar neven werden volwassen en vertrokken, en haar broer stierf. Nu is Lule de enige overgeblevene op het land. Maar omdat het zware leven op de berg te veel voor haar is geworden, bereidt ze zich voor om naar de stad te verhuizen. Tijdens haar laatste zomer in Tuc bezoekt Lule daar de plaatsen die belangrijk waren in haar leven. De Rotterdamse regisseur is erin geslaagd om de emotionele stemming van de hoofdpersoon zo goed weer te geven dat deze film een blijvende indruk zal achterlaten. 31

Synopsis In the backyards there are sheds, a huge old tree, wild plants with wild offspring, waste scattered around. This is where they spend their time. A decaying building is about to be destroyed and someone may go beyond. Soon one of them becomes aware of the sea. DIRECTOR`S STATEMENT “I wanted to make a film that dealt with the spaces we live in, the microcosm of my home town, time and how we perceive it while we wait in our backyards regardless of whether we take them literally or as a metaphor.”

Synopsis Tarik lives alone and works as a stockman in a supermarket. He is lonely and killing his time in the company of two colleagues. A small shop near by the supermarket employs new girl. Tarik is fond of her, and under cover of darkness he secretly starts to draw on a store window. He is hidden from the prying eyes of the society that see every emotion as a sign of weakness.

Tarik woont alleen en werkt als vakkenvuller in een supermarkt. Hij is eenzaam en doodt zijn tijd in het gezelschap van twee collega’s. Zijn leven verandert als hij gevoelens krijgt voor een meisje dat komt werken in het winkeltje naast de supermarkt. Maar het is voor Tarik niet makkelijk om daarmee om te gaan; hij moet zijn gevoelens verbergen voor de nieuwsgierige ogen van de samenleving die elke emotie als een teken van zwakte ziet.

Synopsis The narrator’s monologue is confronted with the images of the spaces where the memories were born, special moments that marked the end of childhood and the beginning of the Bosnian war. Directed by a young woman who embraces cinema in many different aspects: as an academic having PhD in Film and Literature, as a lecturer in scriptwriting at the Academy for Performing Arts in Sarajevo, as a film producer and scriptwriter of several successful feature fiction films (such as ‘Snow’, awarded at the Cannes Film Festival), as well as the main programmer of the fiction competition at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Tataragic engages in directing only when something is really close to her heart, as this story is. This refined narrative touches viewers’ hearts not only by the obvious intimacy but also by profound choice of the cinematic language used in this small film gem.

Synopsis A young Bosnian refugee family ends up in a small village in The Netherlands after getting a residence permit in 1994. Absurd situations arise as they are trying to make this new world their home. Bosnian director, living in Amsterdam, underlines: ‘’I have focused on the absurdity of the life of a refugee. By maintaining a certain degree of distance from the characters and by setting a light tone, I have endeavoured not to diminish the characters to victims but have tried to emphasize their humanity.’’

In 1994 komt een jong vluchtelingengezin uit Bosnië na het krijgen van een verblijfsvergunning terecht in een klein dorp in Nederland. Er ontstaan absurde situaties terwijl ze proberen om deze nieuwe wereld hun thuis te maken. Bosnische regisseur, woonachtig in Amsterdam, benadrukt: ‘’Ik heb mij gericht op de absurditeit van het leven van een vluchteling. Door het houden van een zekere mate van afstand tot de personages en door het voeren van een lichte toon, heb ik geprobeerd personages niet als slachtoffers weer te geven, maar juist om hun menselijkheid te benadrukken.’’

Synopsis A creepy creature hides in the wallpaper in the young man’s room and kills him slowly. He has no choice but to struggle to the death against it. The director points out: “I had many sources of inspiration, one of which was the author’s Soviet animation of the 70’s and 80’s, mostly in cut-out technique. I really loved it and had long dreamed of doing something like that. The second big source was German Expressionist black-and-white fi¬lms. Cannot help mentioning the music that helped me to immerse in necessary atmosphere: Fred Fritz and John Zorn’s experimental albums and witch-house music.’’

Een tweede grote inspiratiebron zijn de Duitse expressionistische zwart-witfilms. Ook de muziek van Fred Fritz en John Zorn’s experimentele albums en witch-house waren belangrijk voor het creëren van de juiste sfeer.”

Borian and his father Barjaktar have left behind a Kosovo in ruins. All day long, images of the war play on the television. Then the signal fails. It’s a sign for Borian to meet his girlfriend Eva on the roof. When his father shows up to repair the satellite dish, the young lovers’ relationship gets complicated... Born in Albania and raised in Brussels, the director consistently tries to embrace these opposing cultures in his films. This film already won several awards: Best Cinematography at Milan Online Film Festival, 2016 - and Special Mention Directing at Roma Cinema DOC, 2016.

Borian en zijn vader Barjaktar hebben Kosovo in puin achtergelaten. De hele dag zijn de oorlogsbeelden op televisie. Opeens verdwijnt het signaal. Voor Borian is dit het seintje om zijn vriendin Eva op het dak te ontmoeten. Als zijn vader ook het dak op komt om de satellietschotel te repareren, veroorzaakt dat complicaties in de relatie van de jonge geliefden... De in Albanië geboren en in Brussel getogen regisseur probeert in zijn films deze twee tegengestelde culturen te verenigen. DIRECTOR`S STATEMENT “The film explores a contradiction between the perception of the rituals of the family during the national holiday and my personal perception of May 9th, my birthday. Being the main character and the filmmaker at the same time, gave me an opportunity to experience and, also, reflect on the emotional connection between the two events”. Mariia Ponomarova was born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine and graduated from Master of Film program of the Netherlands Film Academy. She has worked in both documentary and fiction as a director and 1st AD. She participated in the documentarists movement ’Babylon’13 - cinema of civil protest’ during the revolution in Ukraine.

DIRECTOR`S STATEMENT “Deze film onderzoekt een tegenstrijdigheid tussen de waarneming van de rituelen van de familie tijdens de nationale feestdag en mijn persoonlijke beleving van 9 mei – mijn verjaardag. Omdat ik zowel de hoofdpersoon als de filmmaker ben, had ik een kans om te ervaren en na te denken over de emotionele band tussen de twee gebeurtenissen”. On a cold winter’s day, a young woman travels from the countryside to an address in the city, where she’s never been before. There she hopes to get something that may affect her future. Raisa sets off on a fateful journey into the unknown at the break of dawn. ENFF is especially glad to have an opportunity to present a great short film from a small and lesser known cinema of the Republic of Moldova. The director who studied in Moldova and Romania continued his education in Austria. With this precisely done, refined story he has been selected for the Vienna Independent Shorts 2016 and won the Best International Short Film Award at the Sunscreen Film Festival 2016, the 3rd Open Poznan Award at the Short Waves Festival 2016 and the Special Mention Award at the Sleepwalkers International Short Film Festival 2015.

Vijf opnamedagen waren genoeg voor deze zorgvuldige gemaakte, bijzonder inzichtelijke weergave van een cruciaal moment in het leven van een ‘survivor’.

Op een koude winterdag reist een jonge vrouw van het platteland naar een plek in de stad waar ze nog nooit eerder is geweest. Ze hoopt daar iets te vinden dat haar toekomst zal veranderen. Bij het aanbreken van de dag begint Raisa aan haar noodlottige reis naar het onbekende. ENFF is trots deze geweldige korte film uit Moldavië te mogen presenteren; Moldavië is een land met een kleine en nog niet heel bekende filmindustrie. De regisseur studeerde eerst in Moldavië en Roemenië en vervolgde zijn opleiding in Oostenrijk. Synopsis A friendship is tested to its limits when batteling for survival during the Kosovo war. Petrit and Oki are best friends. After Oki buys a bike, Petrit is desperate to have one of his own. He finds a niche dealing cigarette papers to the occupying Serbian troops. As their relationship is tested to the limit, they understand the true intentions of the Serbians and learn the meaning of friendship. The destiny of the collaboration between the UK director and Kosovo is like a film story in itself. On a trip to the Balkans in 2010, he found himself stranded in Kosovo due to the Icelandic volcano eruption. He began to learn about the history of the country and explore the untold stories. He researched for over four years before writing the short, which is based on the true events of his friend (producer and actor) Eshref Durmishi.

Een vriendschap wordt ultiem getest in een overlevingsstrijd tijdens de Kosovo-oorlog. Nadat Oki een fiets koopt wil zijn beste vriend Petrit er ook absoluut een. Hij vindt een gat in de markt: hij verkoopt sigarettenvloeitjes aan de bezettende Servische troepen. Terwijl de vrienden op de proef worden gesteld, begrijpen ze de ware bedoelingen van de Serviërs en leren ze de betekenis van vriendschap. Het ontstaan van deze film is een filmverhaal op zich. In 2010 strandde de regisseur in Kosovo door de IJslandse vulkaanuitbarsting. Hij leerde over de geschiedenis van het land en ging op zoek naar onbekende verhalen. Voor het schrijven van dit script deed hij meer dan vier jaar onderzoek. Zo ontstond deze korte film die is gebaseerd op het waargebeurde ervaringen van zijn vriend (producent en acteur) Eshref Durmishi.

Synopsis Janka became seriously ill. He would like to see the Sun, but it is a cold autumn day. His sister, Alenka, would like to help her little brother and goes to search for the Sun. This film is based on a fairy tale of known Belarusian author Uladzimir Karatkevich. The director underlines: “Uladzimir Karatkevich is one of my favourite authors. I wanted to give the audience the idea that we are all responsible for each other and should help each other.’’

Synopsis A deeply personal family story about the delicate art of making traditional Hungarian strudel. Ilona and Erzsebet are two elderly sisters who have baked traditional Hungarian strudel together all their lives. The film explores the quirks of their enduring friendship and how their family survived during the extreme poverty of the communist era. It offers a deeply personal insight into the sistersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; family life, including a strong connection to their dear mother who taught them everything they know. It also provides a window into the history and local traditions of the small Hungarian town of Tura. While we learn about the art of strudel-making, the real discovery of this film are the two big-hearted women who, despite their differences, canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live without each other.

Een zeer persoonlijk familieverhaal over de delicate kunst van het maken van traditionele Hongaarse strudel. Ilona en Erzsebet zijn twee zussen op leeftijd die al hun hele leven samen traditionele Hongaarse strudel bakken. Meeting a stranger in a train in the contemporary Balkan region is more than encountering another fellow human being. It is encountering a certain ethnicity. This short film warns us about the danger behind these encounters.

Synopsis A young taxi dispatcher receives an unusual call. It turns into an extraordinary situation. What will happen to the taxi driver and what to the citizen that hired the taxi? The film story opens up many questions and goes much deeper beyond the linear narrative that we follow. It reflects the nuances of the complex society in Kosovo, a new country whose citizens are being constantly confronted with personal nightmares caused by intensive war events, pressure, danger and struggles in the recent past. Is it post-traumatic stress or some other disturbance that haunts the conscious of the film character? All of these important questions are in the sub-layer of the narrative and therefore, this short film provides an amazingly complex story that makes us think and raises important questions about society.

Een jonge taxichauffeur krijgt een ongebruikelijke oproep die een uitzonderlijke situatie veroorzaakt. Wat gebeurt er met de taxichauffeur en wat gebeurt er met de passagier? Dit verhaal roept vele vragen op en heeft onder de oppervlakte een veel diepere laag. Het weerspiegelt de nuances van de complexe samenleving in Kosovo, een nieuw land waar de burgers voortdurend worden geconfronteerd met persoonlijke nachtmerries, veroorzaakt door intensieve oorlogsgebeurtenissen, druk, gevaar en de strijd in het recente verleden. Is het post-traumatische stress of een andere verstoring die het geweten van dit filmkarakter achtervolgt? Al deze belangrijke vragen sluimeren in een sub-laag van deze vertelling, waardoor deze korte film een ongelooflijk complex verhaal vertelt en ons aan het denken zet over de samenleving.

Synopsis A few people from different religious and ethnic communities are travelling in a compartment of a train, in a country that is in a civil war. Everybody expects the latest news on the war in the country and the results of the negotiation process between Macedonian and Albanian politicians. The war is outside, but it emerges inside the train too. Words are weapons, sharp views, invectives... Could they forgive each other at the end the war? The director worked on the development and realization of several amateur documentaries and feature films and later produced and directed the short documentarvy ’Storming’, which premiered at the International Film Festival Brothers Manaki in 1997.

In een land in burgeroorlog reizen enkele mensen uit verschillende religieuze en etnische gemeenschappen samen in een treincompartiment. Iedereen wacht op het laatste nieuws over de oorlog in het land en de resultaten van de onderhandelingen tussen de Macedonische en Albanese politici. De oorlog is buiten, maar bereikt ook het treincompartiment. Woorden zijn wapens, er zijn scherpe meningen en er wordt gescholden. Kunnen ze elkaar vergeven aan het einde van de oorlog? De regisseur werkte aan de ontwikkeling en realisatie van een aantal amateurdocumentaires en speelfilms. Synopsis A young taxi driver has lived a mundane life as a cab driver for quite some time. The faces have come and gone from his rear-view mirror. However, things change when two young man try to hijack his car in the middle of Georgian mountains. The director who works within the fields of art photography, theatre and cinema has made his first short film ‘The Point’ during a workshop of Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami. He is now working on his short film ‘Gabana’.

Een jonge taxichauffeur is al een oude rot in het taxichauffeursvak. In zijn achteruitkijkspiegel zag hij gezichten komen en gaan. Maar zijn leven krijgt een wending wanneer twee jonge mannen in het midden van de Georgische bergen zijn auto proberen te kapen. De regisseur van deze film werkt in het vakgebied kunstfotografie, theater en film. Hij maakte zijn eerste korte film ‘The Point’ tijdens een workshop van de Iraanse meester Abbas Kiarostami. The director Jajanidze graduated as a film director at the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgia State University, after getting a law degree.

Twee zusters op middelbare leeftijd bereiden zich rustig voor op een grote verandering nadat ze hun hele leven samen hebben doorgebracht. Lili krijgt een kans om de ingeslapen stad te verlaten en met haar dochter te verhuizen naar een andere plek. Maar Tatiana houdt hoop dat Lili haar nooit zal verlaten... Regisseur Jajanidze is, na het afronden van een studie Rechten, afgestudeerd als regisseur aan de Shota Rustaveli Theater en Georgia State University Film.

Synopsis Murat and Masha decide to get married, but their romantic decision will unleash a humorous series of unbelievable and sad stories. Vakhtang (Tato) Kotetishvili being photographer and director, pays special attention to the visual language in his work. He also worked as a cameraman on films of other directors and later as a filmmaker and director of photography of his own short films.

Murat en Masha besluiten om te trouwen. Hun romantische beslissing ontketent een humoristische reeks ongelooflijk en trieste verhalen. Vakhtang (Tato) Kotetishvili, fotograaf en regisseur, besteedt bijzondere aandacht aan de beeldtaal in zijn werk. Hij werkte ook als cameraman voor films van andere regisseurs en later als filmmaker en cameraregisseur van zijn eigen korte films.

Intriguing and touching cinematic take on the struggle of a family coping with death approaching their household.

Intrigerend en ontroerend perspectief op de strijd van een familie die een naderende dood moet verwerken.

Synopsis A family living in a small village has to prepare for a sad event in their life: their grandmother is dying. Soon the death phantom visits the family. This exciting, wonderfully shot film has an interesting twist. It makes us think about important notions of life. The film was shot in western Georgia’s Cholobargi village. The director graduated at the Georgian Film University in 2015. Now he studies the Master’s program in Neurobiology and works in the film industry. His film won a main prize for the Best Short Film at the International Bosphorus Film Festival in Turkey and the Special Jury Prize at the Batumi International Art-House Film Festival in Georgia.

Een gezin uit een klein dorp bereidt zich voor op een trieste gebeurtenis: het sterven van grootmoeder. De dood dient zich al snel aan. Deze spannende, prachtig gemaakte film heeft een interessante twist en zet aan tot nadenken over de belangrijke dingen van het leven. Deze film werd opgenomen in het dorpje Cholobarg in het westen van Georgië. De regisseur studeerde in 2015 af aan de Georgian Film University en volgt nu een masteropleiding in neurobiologie terwijl hij in de filmindustrie werkt. Zijn film won een prijs voor Best Short Film op het International Bosphorus Film Festival in Turkije en de Special Jury Prize op Batumi International Art-House het Film Festival in Georgië.

The streets of Amsterdam are more and more populated with East European Roma, many of them play music on the streets, at metro stations and on big squares. Who are these people? What do we know about them? What kind of opportunities do they get in the countries of their origin? The statistics show that there is a big number of Roma children in South East Europe that cannot access their basic right to education. Only a few of them reach university level but most of them do not follow any kind of education. We want to focus on films that deal with Roma children and what kind of possibilities they have – or lack – to go to school. We provide several excellent documentaries that bring us positive examples and depict stories of children who are still eagerly following their education and choosing for the path of hope, in spite of hardship.

EUNIC DAY

In this program, ENFF also brings several films that deal with the notion of crossing (state) borders. Like Roma people, who often change places, many people are crossing borders as refugees. They are pushed out of their countries due to war at home. What chances do refugee children have to follow a normal education in today’s Europe? What do we know about these people? How keen are we to find out? In our DEBATE, done in collaboration with EUNIC, we will try to assess what the opportunities are for education among communities on the fringes of European society today. Speakers are the filmmakers of the films from our program, as well as Dutch experts and lecturers. One of the key speakers is Josip Kesic, PhD researcher and lecturer European Studies at the Universitiy of Amsterdam. Moderation: prof. Nenad Fiser.

Unfortunately, not for the best of reasons. Topics like: the Balkan route, refugees in Macedonia and Serbia, the fence between Hungary and Serbia, recent fall of the government in Croatia and the destabilizing rhetoric of Bosnian political leaders, dominated the news coverage. How do these recent social upheavals affect the people living in the Balkans? And how do they perceive the changing political movements that the whole European continent is experiencing. These are the topics which will be discussed with people who have recently dealt with the Balkans – travelled to do research or have a special bond with the region. Guests: Donald Weber – photographer and author Valerie Sluijter - first Dutch ambassador to BIH Moderator: Mak Kapetanovic - former exec. director of ENFF, currently Sarajevo-based and working in the field of public diplomacy and political analysis. The exhibition Stray Dogs Walk the Red Carpet is the backdrop for the discussion and reveals the experiences of 34 international photography students from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, after embarking upon a weeklong photographic journey in an attempt to unravel the experiences of working in an unknown city. Together with design students from the Akademija Likovnih Umjetnosti, the photographers themselves are the stray dogs, wandering the city of Sarajevo. The exhibition encompasses a range of themes, topics and issues, from LGBT rights, to the Oslobođenje building. Students were engaged in the worlds of landmines, unemployment, and of course stray dogs. ENFF GOES TO SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES This year ENFF introduces a new initiative – the FILM IN CLASS education program for students. ENFF has started a promising collaboration with national and international schools and universities in The Netherlands in order to promote film culture, develop media literacy and foster cultural understanding among the young audience. ENFF provides schools access to educationally relevant films in order to engage students in critical thinking, stimulate discussions on pressing issues through the medium of film and encourage young viewers to appreciate the diversity of European cinema. This way, students have a unique chance to discover European films in their classroom, broaden their perspectives and learn more about the world around them. The films are carefully selected according to the topic so they can be incorporated within the curriculum. The program is supplemented with the film guides for teachers who want to use film in their classrooms – a methodological proposal with questions for discussion, additional activities, all key terms, background information and interesting facts about the film. Other activities will include attending film screenings and masterclasses. Students will have an opportunity to pose questions and exchange their thoughts and ideas with the film directors. FLOTEL EUROPA

More than one million migrants and refugees are fleeing violence in their home countries. The European refugee issue has become both a political and humanitarian problem. Therefore, the focus of this year’s educational program is the subject of refugees. ENFF has selected a multi-awarded documentary ‘Flotel Europa’ by a young and promising Sarajevo-born director Vladimir Tomic. This year’s program consists of a documentary that is screened to a group of students, a detailed film guide for teachers and a special tailored debate among the students, moderated by professor Nenad Fiser. PANAMA

What does modern dating mean today? How can social media, technology and total information shape young people’s relationships? These are just some of the issues tackled in ‘Panama’, the first feature film by Serbian director Pavle Vuckovic which had its world premiere at Cannes. As part of the educational program, a special screening of ‘Panama’ is organised for students at Filmhuis Den Haag. The director Pavle Vuckovic will be there to give a masterclass after the film. Students will have an opportunity to discuss, ask questions and learn more about the film from the director himself. Synopsis on page 13. Masterclass in collaboration with Eye to Eye.

SILENT FILMS WITH LIVE MUSIC MONDAY 7 NOVEMBER

19.30 hours | Filmhuis Den Haag Films by OKTAVIJAN MILETIC from Croatia Live music performance by Aleksandra Popovska from Macedonia A silent film screening in Filmhuis Den Haag on the eve of the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival by a genuine pioneer of Croatian cinema Oktavijan Miletic. Oktavijan Miletic (1902-1987) was a great cinematographer and director who started his rich and interesting film career in 1926 with a 9,5 mm Pathe camera. Miletic is certainly one of the more important figures of the early European cinema. His 18 minute film THE AFFAIRS OF CONSUL DORGEN was selected for the competition in Paris in 1933 and Miletic received an award from the jury headed by Louis Lumiere. Miletic’s talent for parodies and comical elements is to be seen in his short film AH, IT WAS ONLY A DREAM (1932) and ZAGREB IN THE CITY LIGHTS (1934). An interesting parody of German expressionism in FAUST (1934), won him an award at the pan-Slavic competition in Zagreb and an award at the Barcelona International Film Festival in 1935. Looking back, it is amazing we have the opportunity today to present work by an Eastern European author who participated in the first editions of the Venice Film Festival – and with his film NOCTURNO has won a Silver medal at the 4th Venice Festival held in 1936. A year later, he created, THE HAT, a 16-minute film, regarded as the first Croatian sound film and in 1944 he directed the first Croatian sound feature length film LISINSKI that depicts the life of the famous music composer. After the WW II Miletic worked predominantly as a DOP on films by prestigious directors. In 1992, the association of the Croatian film critics established a film prize called OKTAVIJAN AWARD that is given to the best film in the national production every year at the Days of Croatian films in Zagreb. In 2011 Croatian Cinematheque has digitalized the amateur films of Oktavijan Miletic and this special screening has been made possible through the courtesy of the same institution. Live music performance by Aleksandra Popovska Aleksandra is a singer/composer who grew up in Former Yugoslavia, and got educated in Serbia, Macedonia and The Netherlands. Her music and singing resides somewhere between the vocal traditions of the Balkan and Western avant-garde and experimental sound. She interprets all of these different musical genres in a very personal and specific way. Her voice oscillates between wide range of colours and intensities with lot of musical drama and passion. She plays the piano, duduk, zither, little percussions and ties all of this together on an iPad. 61
