WELCOME TO THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EASTERN NEIGHBOURS FILM FESTIVAL A word by artistic director Rada Sesic During its previous 9 editions, the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival has grown into one of the most representative and leading events focusing on the East-European film and culture and established itself within the Dutch film festival scene. This year we present 40 exciting films from East and South-East Europe to the Dutch and international community in The Hague (and other Dutch cities in our On Tour program). Why Eastern Neighbours? We believe that cinema brings people closer together. With an inside view into the mentality and history of Eastern regions, these films help to create a deeper understanding of other cultures. In the many confronting and powerful stories in our program, the harsh, sometimes even frightening reality is staring straight at us; it compels us not to remain indifferent. The Opening Film is the humorous and thought-provoking documentary Korida by Sinisa Vidovic. It is in a way our festival statement; we want to honour every film category - fiction, documentary or short when it is powerful, compelling and meaningful. Secondly it unites 3 countries, both production and content-wise, connecting the Balkan with the rest of Europe. Austrian but Croatian born author tackles the Bosnian multi-cultural situation, the political absurdity 4

and the complexity of living together. In the year when several top festivals signed a petition for gender equality in the film industry, we are proudly underlining that half of our selection is made by female authors. To name a few: The Marriage by Blerta Zeqiri, daringly deals with homosexuality in Kosovo and is submitted for the Oscars; Dede by Georgian Mariam Khatchavani, is a compelling drama shot marvellously in her breathtaking region Svaneti; The Miner by another courageous director, Hanna Slak from Slovenia, recalls a shocking true story, while Paradise ‘89 by Madara Dislere from Latvia reflects on the time when the country fought for independence and democracy. Biljana Tutorov in When Pigs Come, gives a humorous, yet serious take on life and politics in Serbia and, like many other films at our festival, embarks on a journey to revisit historical truths.

We are thrilled that 70% of our program consists of debut films: a.o. The Frog, a remarkable psychological post-war drama by Elmir Jukic from Bosnia and Herzegovina; the disturbing contemporary take on Albanian reality Daybreak by Gentian Koci; Men Don’t Cry by Bosnian Alen Drljevic which impressively deals with post-war traumas; Coyote, a lucid contemporary western from the East by Mark Kostyal from Hungary; Secret Ingredient, a Macedonian dark comedy by Gjorce Stavreski (submitted for the Oscars). The program Polish Film Pearls contemplates on national and personal identity, as well as our traditional ENFF Discoveries and Short Films by Great Masters sections where we present exciting styles, new talents and new works by masters.

Two of our programs, Exciting, Current Cinema and Documentaries Open Debates, bring films that reflect the admirable filmmakers’ dedication to bring important topics to the table, issues that matter to all of us, like migration, the multi-cultural society and the widespread political shift in Europe towards intolerance, conservatism and nationalism.

We endorse the initiative of Dutch distributors to show films from the Southeast Europe. All Alone, the brand new film by the great Croatian director Bobo Jelcic that premiered in Sarajevo this year, and the Bulgarian Posoki by Stephan Komandarev that premiered in Cannes and was last year’s winner in Sarajevo, will hit the cinemas after featuring at our festival.

Among our Highlights are two unique Masterclasses. One is given by Leon Lucev from Croatia, silver screen icon of South-East Europe. We screen 3 films in which he performs brilliantly: Ivan by Janez Burger (Slovenian submission for the Oscars), a compelling social thriller about love and crime, as well as the already mentioned Men Don’t Cry and The Miner. The other special masterclass is by our guest Damir Imamovic, a famous musician from Sarajevo and ‘The King of Sevdah’. He is also the main character in the film Sevdah by Marina Andree Skop. Our Closing Film is a real treat for connoisseurs: the Czech classic Larks on a String by Oscar winning director Jiri Menzel. The film was made in 1969 and immediately forbidden. This lasted till 1990, when it won the main prize at the Berlinale. Special guest at the closing ceremony is main actor Vaclav Neckar, also known for his role as the young Milos Hrma in Menzel’s Closely Watched Trains. Our Festival is not just an event with high quality cinema. We have especially designed the entire festival to initiate networking and new partnerships and create fun and unforgettable moments for all participants and visitors. Come and enjoy East and South European films. They are now in your neighbourhood! 5

OPENING FILM

A charming and humorous journey into the fragile human relations in a crisis-ridden post-war-society. A documentary of archaic poetry with strong characters and beautiful shots. The Bosnian bullfights are a subject rarely caught on film. In a Korida bullfight, bulls compete against bulls in an arena, yet unlike the Spanish Corrida de Toros no blood is shed. The film gives a unique insight into a society that tries to come to terms with its past war experiences in an unusual way. Is it possible that Koridas have brought more peace to the Bosnian people than the European Union? Because of its socio-political relevance and utterly fascinating characters that have never been portrayed before, the world of bullfighting in rural Bosnia offers a tough and realistic look at a country that has not yet recovered from the impacts of war.

A remarkable, dark, bitter comedy directed by Oscar winning director Jiri Menzel. The film was banned by the Czechoslovak government and went unseen until the fall of the Communist regime and its premiere at the 1990 Berlinale, where it won the Golden Bear. Set in the late 1950s in communist Czechoslovakia, the story concerns the irrepressible goodness of a bunch of intelligent and educated people who are imprisoned by the government in labour camps for being ‘bourgeois elements’ and forced to work in a junkyard for the purposes of re-education. It focuses on the playful, perky and romantic interactions between the male and female groups of prisoners while in the meantime some of them are taken away in a mysterious black car, never to be seen again. A funny, bitter, satirical, allegorical and meaningful Czech classic about the significance of humour and the strength of human spirit while living under repressive regimes. The well-known Czech actor Vaclav Neckar, who many remember from Jiri Menzel’s Oscar winning “Closely Watched Trains” (1966), will be our special guest at this year’s festival.

A captivating, darkly humorous, well-acted intimate drama by award-winning director Bobo Jelcic, recently premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Filmmaker Bobo Jelcic, whose “A Stranger” premiered at the prestigious Berlinale and won many awards including the Heart of Sarajevo for acting and seven Golden Arenas at the Pula FF, takes us on a powerful, emotional journey of modern fatherhood in his impressive second feature. It’s a story of a divorced father Marko who fights to spend more time with his daughter. He is hardly ever alone: either surrounded by his family, friends, co-workers and neighbourhood fixers. However, he is driven to the brink by limited contact with the one person he loves more than anyone – his daughter, who lives with her mother. When he starts the legal proceedings to get more time with his child, he enters the Kafkaesque world of a social-services system in meltdown. An intimate character study and a snapshot of a community, but nevertheless, an up-to-date, universal, deeply human story.

A serious struggle for the land, love and life! Debutant director Mark Kostyal transfers the Wild West to the East Europe with extraordinary imagery. Sultry heat, dinginess, unspoken social problems and hierarchical infighting. This is the town of Tuzko, somewhere in present-day Hungary where Misi arrives to inherit his grandfather’s house and property. Misi is a disillusioned and frustrated young man who is constantly on the run and who does not find his place in the world, in work or in relationships. Soon he begins the hardest struggle of his life for land, love and for his life. A rough neo-western about land expropriation and human stress. An excellent action drama by Mark Kostyal, a new voice in the Hungarian cinematic landscape.

Academy award nominee from Albania in 2017. A compelling contemporary drama of a single mother dealing with morality and compromises, in a struggle for survival in today’s Albania. Daybreak is a story on people’s day-by-day’s struggle to keep going on in a society. A universal story of a woman, a single mother, abandoned by her family, who has to make difficult choices in order to provide a basic existence for a child and herself. A glimmer of hope appears when she is offered to take care of sick and old Sofie. To make sure she and her kid have food and a place to live, Leta must do her best to keep Sofie alive as long as possible. Faced with desperation, the young mum makes choices that might be seen as less moral or dubious. According to the director, his feature debut was filmed without camera movements in order to “capture the raw reality of things”. This social drama won the Best Actress award at the Sarajevo Film Festival.

An outstanding cinematic piece and authentic story of woman’s restless fight for freedom set in the deep Caucasus Mountains. It’s 1992. Young Dina lives in a remote mountain village where life is strictly governed by centuries of tradition. Dina’s grandfather has promised her to David, who is returning from the war. But with him comes a comrade-inarms, the handsome Gegi, and Dina falls in love. Is it possible to defy the firmly established order? A fascinating debut by Mariam Khatchvani set in the Svaneti region, her birthplace in the historical Georgian highland protected by UNESCO. Inspired by the story of her grandmother, the director wanted to retain a palpable sense of authenticity and show a way of life that has not been seen on film before. Except one professional actor on set, she engaged local people speaking endangered language. Khatchvani exposed the severe customs deeply rooted in her community following the rhythm of four seasons as the climate conditions also determine the pattern of human behaviour. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Karlovy Vary IFF.

A rough and thrilling drama about the dilemma of taking the wrong choices. Slovenian candidate for the Oscars and the best feature film at this year’s LET’S CEE Film Festival in Vienna. Ivan comes into this world on the background of a corrupted world and a chain of unexpected and nerve wrecking events begins. Ivan’s father Rok, a married businessman whom Mara his mother obsessively loves, is missing. When she finds out that Rok is accused of a white-collar crime, she gets brutally beaten by his wife’s cronies. Mara and Rok manage to get together, but Mara finds herself in an impossible situation when she has to choose between her lover and her child. The film received eight trophies at the Festival of Slovenian Film, including the best feature film award for its ‘’vertiginous dance of images and sound that take hold of the viewer already in the first scene and don’t let go until the end. A deeply moving comment of the state of mind in contemporary Slovenia, but not only that. His almost hypnotic oscillating between feelings of yearning and desperation is something we are all familiar with, one way or the other.” 13

A compelling Bosnian story with brilliant performances of the main actors Isakovic, Bravo, Hadzihafizbegovic, Lucev and Gregurevic. This remarkably refined film won the best film awards at the Karlovy Vary, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Goteborg FF. It has been more than 20 years after the wars in former Yugoslavia ended, but the wounds of those who participated in them are still open. In this tense drama, a group of war veterans are trying to overcome lack of trust, prejudice and cross the invisible enemy lines by opening their hearts to each other. They are hoping to find a relief from the nightmares which are haunting them for over two decades. Despite the support of a patient and devoted facilitator, it is obvious that a reconciliation both with one’s own traumas and with the former enemies is an unpredictable path full of thorns. Brilliantly written and directed, the film does not only deal with personal emotional discomforts, it also brings up the treatments and position of war veterans in the post-conflict societies..

A touching and compassionate drama which unfolds the impossibility of gay love in a patriarchal society from a humane perspective, beyond the postulates of political correctness. Bekim and Anita are getting married in two weeks, so they are adding the final touches to the big day. Despite expecting news of Anita’s parents, declared missing since the 1999 Kosovar War, and with Bekim’s controlling family in turn, the couple seem to manage with preparations. But when Bekim’s secret gay ex-lover, Nol, returns from abroad unexpectedly, the situation complicates, especially by the fact that Nol is still in love with Bekim. Inevitably, the wedding banquet loads with tension. The director Blerta Zeqiri considers that same sex love in Kosovo is today’s Romeo and Juliette story, thus she wanted to make the audience leave the three main characters’ gender aside and feel for them in this complicated triangle, where no decision is without a victim. The result is a well-performed, absorbing and empathetic debut film, winner of the FIPRESCI and Special Jury prizes in Tallinn and Kosovar submission for the Oscars.

A powerful film based on a true story of a miner who risked everything to uncover one of the darkest secrets of Slovenian history. In 2007, a Slovenian miner of Bosnian origin was sent to check an abandoned mine. His task was to quickly make sure the mine was empty before management sells the company. But in the deep underground, Mehmedalija Alic found a hidden mass grave of 4000 war refugees killed after the end of WW2. The discovery was a shock to the Slovenian society, but the miner was made redundant for insisting to identify and arrange a funeral for those victims. Acclaimed Slovenian female director Hanna Slak helped Alic pen his story and his autobiography ‘A nobody’ was published in 2013. She subsequently adapted it into a fiction film about the miner, his family, his persistence to dig out the truth, and his strive for social justice. The film won two Special Mentions at the Warsaw IFF and three Vesna Awards for Best Director, Actor and Editing at the Festival of Slovenian Film.

5 directors from 5 countries, countries that occupied Czechoslovakia in 1968. The documentary travels back to the place of invasion focusing on the stories of soldiers who took part in the occupation. This omnibus documentary gives a new perspective to the occupation of Czechoslovakia seen from the eyes of the occupiers. Former soldiers and their friends reflect on circumstances surrounding their participation on the side of occupier’s armies coming from the Warsaw Pact countries. Some wonder whether what they believed to be true was actually a real truth? Was the West about to attack? Was their mission noble, as some of them believed? Were they saviours or occupiers of Czech and Slovaks? They wonder whether they would obey the orders if they were in the situation to shoot at the civilians. Despite some still being proud of their involvement, they all cast a new perspective at their personal past and historic truths.

A documentary about Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov who was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for terrorism and arms trafficking after a trial denounced as “Stalinist”. Oleg Sentsov, an Ukrainian filmmaker, is on trial in a courtroom in Rostov-on-Don. He is charged with leading an anti-Russian terrorist movement and planning terrorist attacks on Russian infrastructure and monuments, because he was against the annexation of Crimea by the Russian state. He is denying the crimes and defends himself with courage and determination. However, he is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and started an open-ended hunger strike on 14 May 2018. The film explores the truth behind the highly politicised trial and reveals many flaws in the way the State obtained evidence against Sentsov. The notorious case inspired protests around the world and the director Askold Kurov was so shocked by the trial that he decided to show solidarity to his filmmaking colleague: “I came to the first hearing as Oleg’s acquaintance – to support him, then I understood that the only thing I could do in this situation was to make a film about it”.

A charming, well directed documentary tragi-comedy of a very special old lady. A retired teacher in Serbian province, devotedly monitors elections believing that all individuals could and should make a difference in building democracy. Dragoslava has four TV sets, three grandchildren, two best friends, and one husband with whom she fights over the remote control. She has lived in five countries without ever moving from her flat in a small border town in Serbia. The media and politics seep into the family intimacy but she tackles it with humour and determination. She recounts tales from real life to the kids, instead of fairy tales, powered by her desire to create a future of hope. For her, each and every one of her actions, from morning till night, is an act of responsibility which sparks changes in the world. A multi-awarded documentary about never giving-up and making a difference in a society where many have lost the hope of using their voice.

A charming, lucid and though-provoking film in the tradition of the best Polish documentaries. Winner of DOK Leipzig’s main prize – the Golden Dove. ‘‘Patriotic Lesson’’ tells the story of a Polish primary school singing contest, in which children perform patriotic songs, full of heroism, bravery, blood, sweat and tears. By presenting performances and the audience, tensions between parents and teachers, and finally jury deliberations, the film raises questions about what is patriotism over generations and its institutional reaffirmation in today’s Polish society. Filmed in black and white, Jacobson’s film keeps a delicate line between critical approach to the event and fascination and respect to the characters of the movie. Patriotic song contests take place every year and have local and national range.

Hilarious, quite satirical, yet very serious observational, straightforward, smartly directed documentary that deals with new trends in Polish society, politics and everyday life affecting very much the young generation. On Poland’s National Independence Day, the jury consisting of the director, the mayor, a priest and a poetess chooses the winner of a competition for the region’s number one patriot. The director of the Cultural Centre in a provincial town announces a competition. Participants have to creatively present what patriotism means for them. The only requirement is that everyone must come up with their own ideas on the subject. Singing, recitation, gesture, speech, staging - all forms are allowed. As Independence Day on November 11 approaches, the tension is raising. The jury will soon choose the best patriot in the region. Famous Polish producer Studio Munka and the director who is a graduate of well-respected Wajda documentary school, made a film that echoed so well around the world and was chosen for dozens of film festivals.

A heartwarming, humorous documentary of a man who drives his 94-year-old mother in an old, rusty Wartburg, righty called “Poland’s Ugliest Car”. Winner of Grand Prix for the Best Polish Film at the Krakow Film Festival. The youngest protagonist of the documentary is Wartburg, the almost museum-ready automobile over 50 years of age. The car is still on the road, driven by Bogdan, who’s accompanied by his mother Kazimiera. This road movie which takes place between the concentration camp of Majdanek in Poland, and a former Nazi labor factory in Germany is actually a journey into the past, retracing the memories from the war. It is also a portrayal of an extraordinary relationship between mother and son. Bogdan devotes almost all his time to Kazimiera – except for the moments when he proudly presents the quaint ugliness of the car to the people he accidentally meets.

An outstanding cinematic meditation by the always lucid and surprizing Serbian director Boris Mitic. A feel good documentary and satirical parable about Nothing’s weekend on Earth, in which Nothing, tired of being misunderstood, runs away from home and comes to address us for the first and the last time. To be able to make a simple narration and give chance Nothing to express itself, the director Boris Mitic made a massive research through 20.000 pages of the most eclectic bibliography ever used in a documentary film. Using an unique online platform, the documentary footage was brainstormed and filmed over 8 years by 62 cinematographers in 70 countries. The music was scored by cabaret grandmasters Pascal Comelade and the Tiger Lillies, while Iggy Pop lent his voice to Nothing addressing us in simple childish verse.

Sevdah is a feeling about life imbued with melancholy, yearning and beautiful sorrow. This film takes us on an intimate journey through the world of, as often called, the Bosnian Blues. The song that expresses the feeling of Sevdah is known as Sevdalinka. This unique song-form that tells of love and the pain of love, has been alive over 400 years in Bosnia and often compared with fado or blues. The death of their mutual friend and a passionate fan of Sevdalinka, Farah, has brought musician Damir Imamovic and director Marina Andree Skop together. Trying to deal with their own loss and grief, they decide to create a film about Sevdah capturing local culture and experiences of common men as well as known professionals like Amira Medunjanin. The result is an emotionally charged, lyrical and visual journey to the very heart and soul of Bosnia, a story of personal loss echoing the destiny of a small country, told through its deeply soulful music. Winner of the prestigious Audience Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival. The film will be screened after the Masterclass with Damir Imamovic (read more on page 49).

Yugoslavia, How Ideology Moved Our Collective Body is a cinematic essay that deals with the question of how ideology performs itself in public space through mass performances. The author collected and analysed film and video footage from the period of Yugoslavia (1945 – 2000), focusing on state performances as well as counterdemonstrations and civic demonstrations in the ‘90s. Going back through the images, the film traces how communist ideology was gradually exhausted through the changing relations between the people, ideology and the state. After its world premiere at the Berlinale, the film travelled internationally and received a Special Jury Mention at the Sarajevo Film Festival. The young teacher Sonja attempts to solve a dispute between two schoolmates calmly. However, due to the interference of the parents the more or less ordinary primary school event result in something with considerably far more reaching consequences. Will young teacher Sonja succeed in solving the argument? What will the school do? The director points out: “Injustices and crimes are often presented as something loud, clear and dramatic, although we know from experience they are frequently far from it. On the contrary, we often find them banal, vague, evasive, etc. The film presents a small, seemingly unimportant injustice caused by a small everyday crime.’’

An interesting visual expression about the fragility of memory. This refined animation was selected for a number of international festivals, including the prestigious Annecy. The film is the director’s attempt of reconstructing Albert Camus’ The Stranger, which she read 12 years ago. With time, the memory of the book has been reduced to fragments and atmosphere, which the director tries to provide with a context in an effort to evoke the original. ‘’It’s challenging to make a connection with the audience through something that is exclusively personal as my own memories. But in the same time it represents a universal phenomenon because everyone’s memories are unstable and time is transforming them into a certain atmosphere that contains no guarantee in details’’, underlines the talented Petra Balekic, who not only directed the film, but also wrote it, animated and edited it.

MASTERCLASS BY MARTA POPIVODA FILMTHEATER ‘T HOOGT, UTRECHT

LEON LUČEV THE ACTING STAR OF SOUTH-EAST EUROPE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31 15.00-17.00 hours De Balie, Amsterdam

Image-culture has rapidly changed over the past few decades and is a topic that young generations are particularly sensitive and intelligent to. The film develops a complex relationship between images and their viewer, and places this in context with ideology and politics. It also touches on topics such as the performative body and cinematic juxtaposition. Filmmaker Marta Popivoda will be present for an interview and Q & A after the screening. This will provide the opportunity for an in-depth and open discussion about the film, its concepts, the techniques and the researcher/artist’s practice. Synopsis on page 33.

“Everybody is talented to act. Because everybody is acting every day.” An INSPIRING, DYNAMIC ENCOUNTER with a true star of Eastern European cinema – an actor, director, producer, acting teacher, born in Croatia, who works nowadays in many countries in the region. Three of his films will be screened at this year’s ENFF: IVAN by Janez Burger, MEN DON’T CRY by Alen Drljevic, and THE MINER by Hanna Slak. “In this work I will try to compress and practically present, by involving the participants very actively, my own creative work and research in the field of cinema. I’ll do that from various perspectives: the acting perspective, the director’s, producer’s and writer’s perspective as well as the pedagogical perspective. In the process of compressing myself to the point from which it all begins and also, by listening to that process, I was able to develop myself further. This is also how I encourage others and we follow each other, creatively, emotionally, as people, as beings. Encountering and getting in touch with ourselves, with partners, with the public, with the camera, with students… these were and are the central points of my work. This is what I share.“

Marta Popivoda (Belgrade, SFRJ / based in Berlin) is a filmmaker, video artist and cultural worker. TITITA

Tamas Almasi, Hungary, 2015, 87 min, English subtitles A deeply humane story about the chance for a better life of a young Roma-boy with great musical talent. Anti is selected for at prestigious guitar summer school. Will he take this golden opportunity and change his seemingly predestined life? A moving coming-of-age documentary awarded with Special Jury Prize at the Sarajevo FF.

MY OWN PRIVATE WAR

Lidija Zelovic, The Netherlands, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2016, 57 min, Dutch subtitles Incredibly touching story from the personal point of view by the filmmaker who experienced the war in many layers: intimate, family related, as a mother and a daughter, as a professional, as a world citizen who tries to understand odds of nationalism and hatred. This TV film confronts us with challenging questions: What is left of each of us once we got displaced? What happens to a family long after a war is over? Can one ensure that our children don’t have to carry our burden?

Four shorts with different languages During this special event, we present four different short films spoken in one of the languages from Eastern or South Eastern EU countries. The young audience, youth from of the schools that we collaborate with, will guess the language that is spoken in each of the films (multiple choice). Made possible by the European Parliament.

About Lux Prize The Lux Prize was set up by the European Parliament in 2007 and is intended to promote the European film industry and express shared European values. The European film industry encounters more difficulties than the American, especially due to the existence of many different language areas in Europe. Adapting movies in other languages is a costly process. The winning film of the Lux Prize is therefore, as a prize, subtitled in all official European Union working languages and screened in all EU Member States. On November 14, the winning film of the 2018 competition will be announced and awarded in Strasbourg. Currently the following films are still included in the competition: “Styx”, “The Other Side of Everything” and “Woman at War”. Read more about the Lux Prize here: www.luxprize.eu
