ON OUR Cover Our fairy godmothers were smiling down on us as we pulled together our Rapunzel-inspired photoshoot at the beautiful chateau museum at Audubon State Park. Shillawna Ruffner of Shillawna Ruffner Photography has an eye for evoking romance and captured all the Rococo-era details created by our team of talented vendors. As the saying goes, “It takes a village.” We couldn’t have been happier at the collaborative spirit and fun that our vendors brought to the shoot.

GETTING MARRIED IN THE

Digital Age

When I got engaged, I had a 3 inch binder of all of the colors and wedding ideas I had collected for a year and a half. Twenty years later, we live in a much different world. All the articles and photos I had saved came from paper, hard-copy magazines. Now, in the digital age, everything is just a button click away online and can be saved in a variety of ways on your computer, phones or tablets. Â With apps like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest, you can stay up on the latest articles and information on local, national, and even international wedding trends. You can share information with your bridal party with the touch of a button, and you can archive those ideas in a format that is easy to reach.

ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 3

f

On FACEBOOK, you can search hashtags, find forums, research your vendors’ pages, their photos, their ratings and feedback, as well as staying in touch with family and friends to keep them abreast of all of the details. It used to take hard copy letters and hours of phone calls to communicate all the information that you can now easily tag, share and link them to. Facebook is also a great tool to also share photo albums for friends and loved ones who can’t be there in person. Facebook Live now allows you to bring those long distance relatives into the action as it’s happening in real time. You can easily delegate someone to be in charge of your live feed, while informing the rest of your guests to please put their phones away and disconnect for the ceremony so that your hired photographer and videographer can do his or her thing. We live in a wonderful time where technology lets us connect with people around the globe in real time to be a part of milestone events!

i

INSTAGRAM is a phenomenal tool that brings communities of people together who absolutely love weddings like those of us at Engaged! River Valley. From our professional pics to what we share behind the scenes, we like to bring our readers and our followers into the action of how we do what we do. We also think that Instagram is the home of the all pretty things, so if you are looking for gorgeous wedding inspiration, start down the rabbit hole of wedding hashtags to see where it leads you on ideas! Speaking of hashtags, have you made one for your wedding? Why would you want to do that? Hashtags let you sort content easily and build a community of images. So for example, if you come up with something unique to you (think maybe using your new last name or your first names, a wedding phrase and the year!) and encourage your guests to use the hashtag as they post on social media throughout the night. You can use that hashtag as a search term later to sort through pics that friends and family took to see their perspective of the evening. A word of warning, though - test out your hashtag first! Make sure that it is a “clean” hashtag and hasn’t been used for anything “naughty” on

4 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

the internet! You don’t want to be propagating a hashtag that someone might click, and it brings up some not-so-nice pics. That’s why it’s important to make sure that the one you choose is unique to YOU and YOUR EVENT only!!!

t

TWITTER is a rather fleeting medium, but it can be a fun platform to search for ideas, follow your favorite wedding publications (like ENGAGED! River Valley), and you might even consider having someone live tweet your event! If you are using a particular brand or business, be sure and tag them on whatever social media platform you are on. It’s fun to see if the brand or company engages back! Try it and see! Advertisers and collaborators, as well as us here at ENGAGED!, love to be mentioned and engage with our audience. So, don’t ever hesitate to share with your friends and family online the business you are using, the brands you are wearing and if you are reading our mag! Chances are you’ll get a like or a comment back. They might even share your post! This goes for Twitter, but also for other social media platforms as well.

p

Finally, PINTEREST…. I don’t even know how I got married in the pre-Pinterest era?!?! This app is amazing, and to help you out, ENGAGED! has compiled images from our collaborators and past issues for you to pin away if you like what you see in the mag. So, hop on our Pinterest page and scan through our boards for inspiration and additional content links. Our aim is to provide you with every tool we have in our arsenal to give you the most amazing, successful wedding possible. We hope that by arming you with our social media platforms, we are bringing you the best that this area has to offer in terms of local vendors, breathtaking photography, and options for every budget. - Nikki Davis Engaged! ON OUR RADAR

TURN TABLE, LLC Turn Table, LLC recognizes that experience is everything. From the taste and presentation of the food, the quality of service, and to our commitment to improving our community and environment. Turn Table, LLC co-curates each catering experience with the client while maintaining our unique signature. A Turn Table catered event is characterized by our distinctive fusion of international flavors, repurposing of vinyl records for an unorthodox food presentation and service, and live DJ. Head Chef Jeff Gott and Catering Manager and I came together through our mutual love of our Southside Evansville neighborhood. The lack of healthy food options in our community spurred us to combine our respective skills in the culinary

arts and hospitality and develop a business with the potential to improve our community. Through our work, we hope to address critical areas of concern, such as food insecurity, job creation and education. Turn Table, LLC is about transformation of community, events, and the local palate. The Turn Table food philosophy, like our service philosophy, is rooted in the ideas of co-creation and collaboration of flavors. We like to call it mixing and mastering recipes. Chef Jeff has remixed flavors of classic recipes that tantalize your palate and leave you wanting more. Not only are our flavors fresh, but so are our ingredients. Turn Table, LLC is committed to using quality ingredients whether catering a local gala, a high school graduation, or vending at a local festival around town.

People don’t have to wait until a special event to partake in the Turn Table experience. A part of growing our business is growing with our community. You can find us dishing our culinary creations at Haynie’s Corner in support of local nonprofit, Patchwork Central, or collaborating with Carson’s Brewery. CAPTURING MOMENTS NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN

As a child I watched as my parents photographed wedding after wedding, and couples were always emotional when they saw the images that they had created. I heard phrases like “Wow! Look how beautiful we look!” or expressions such as, “I can’t believe they managed to capture that!” as they flipped through the custom album that was designed just for them. My parents worked extremely hard to be creative and capture images that were special to each couple. Now that I’m grown and in the industry myself, I’ve become used to hearing a completely different

30 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

emotional tone as people watch their wedding films I’ve created for them. They tell me things like, “I’ve watched my film 5 times today alone… and cried every single time!” Even years after the event I’ll have couples approach me and say, “I STILL show people my wedding film all the time!” Now it’s not that there is any less work or creativity put into my films than my parents’ photos. But what is it about a 4 minute video that evokes emotions that are so different than from a beautiful still photo?

We are born with gifts to experience life. We hear sounds such as laughter. We hear a crack in a voice of an emotional bride as as she begins to say her vows to her soon to be husband. Our hearts are touched as we watch the tears stream down the face of a daddy giving away his little girl. We relate to that. We understand that. It pulls at our hearts. It moves us. Because video is how we experience life. Life is constantly moving. It isn’t still. It keeps us in motion. There is no other artistic medium that captures life better than seeing and hearing your favorite moments. And when handled correctly, there’s no better way to see your wedding day over and over again. It provides an experience that can not be replicated in pictures alone. We become moved. So if you’re saying to yourself, “Ok I’m in, let’s get a wedding film!” Then add more tissues to the budget and get ready for an emotional experience every time you look back at the memories. Because they will move you.

BRIDAL FASHION

Classic & Modern

FUSION

Maribella. I swear, bridal fashion lines use the most beautiful names to label the most beautiful gowns. In a world of so many choices, how refreshing is it to go back to the classics? Classic lines. Classic silhouettes. Classic beauties. Maribella from Morilee was chosen by a local bride who continued to express how much she loved her gown even during her reception. She had received compliments from numerous guests that were not the typical, “You make a beautiful bride.” No, she was told how refreshing her dress was. Guests commented on the beauty of simplicity. Of course, many had to acknowledge the uniqueness of the gown details. This Morilee design features a very traditional neckline and A-line silhouette with a front and train entiriely of Marcella satin. The waistline features stunning beading that continues to the back of the gown where the sheer beaded back adds just enough bling for the modern bride. And, how could we forget…. pockets! Covered satin buttons down the train are the perfect way to finish off this classic look. Photo by Bret & Brandie Photography

Lauren Sergesketter has worked as a bridal consultant at Beth Carter Exquisite Bridal and Formal Wear and now works behind the scenes as their social media consultant. She has also worked as a wedding musician for fifteen years. Beth Carter Exquisite Bridal can be contacted at 812.683.3777 for more information, or you can find them online at: www.bethcarter.us

What does this dress tell us? A bride no longer has to choose between traditional and modern! How exciting is that? New styles are now featuring elements of both classic gowns that grandma would love, as well as modern details that have your guests swooning. Marry the two styles together and there’s no doubt that you will be a stunner on your big day.

PLANNING

VENUE COORDINATOR VS.

Wedding P lanner

Making memories and taking the time to truly enjoy their wedding is all that a bride and groom should be concerned about on their big day. With a massive to-do list and a dozen vendors to deal with, how can you ensure that this will be the case? Wedding planners and venue coordinators are the silent partners you should consider making a part of your mix; but be cautioned, wedding planners and venue coordinators are not the same thing. Wedding planner are hired to do much more than a venue coordinator and exist to allow you to simply enjoy one of the most important day of your life. What does a wedding planner do?

WEDDING PLANNER: • Planners can be with you from day one. • Planners will truly get to know you, your groom and your families • Serve as a “sounding board” when issues arise and are equipped to take action to fix them • Can recommend vendors, will set up and attend vendor meetings with you and will serve as the main point of contact between you and your vendors • Can be with you the entire wedding day; from setup to tear down • Will handle any vendor “emergencies” such as a vendor no-show, DJ equipment malfunction or late deliveries • Will coordinate with ALL of your vendors on your behalf including answering their questions on your behalf • Will help you create a complete day-of timeline, up to the minute, and will share this will all vendors, including your venue coordinator • Will work with venue coordinator to make sure all in-house items such as tables, chairs, and food are ordered in appropriate quantities • Can assist with overall design such as choosing colors, flowers, music, meals and attire • Will assist with ceremony setup and rehearsals • Available to you at all times via email, phone or even text

42 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

Most likely; when you book your venue, a venue coordinator will be your point of contact. The venue coordinator plays an important role but will perform duties that pertain to the venue only. Here’s what you can expect:

VENUE COORDINATOR: • Will staff the venue appropriately including in house catering and wait staff • Can recommend vendors • Won’t always be present at the venue on your wedding day • When it comes to your wedding day timeline; they will coordinate with their in-house services only (catering, table and chair setup) • Can show you the linens they offer or the decorations they may have in-house; but will not design your wedding • Will be available to you throughout the planning process; but you will share them with other couples Both professionals play important roles, but wedding planners literally do it all. Planners exist to save the day when your 4-year-old nephew runs off with the champagne flutes, your bouquets are delivered late and the cello player gets stuck in traffic…real story! Jamie Elliott is the Owner and Lead Event Planner with Wonderstruck Weddings & Special Events. She knows that having some FUN throughout the planning process is essential; and getting to know each couple on a deeper level is the key to planning a beautiful wedding. Her knowledge and experience within the local wedding industry allows for a seamless planning process. Jamie offers complete wedding planning services and day-of coordination for the more hands-on couple. She can be reached at wonderstruckwedding@gmail.com.

KHIZAR & SANNA Khizar and Sanna went on their first official date in the brutal cold of Chicago’s notorious winters. Having met before and talked over the phone for weeks prior to their date, it was a highly anticipated time to talk, shop and get to know each other better. Little did Khizar know that shopping to Sanna meant actually shopping! Khizar stills shares how on their first date, Sanna left him hanging at the store to shop for new clothes. Needless to say their next dates did not involve shops. When it came to planning their wedding, they wanted an intimate reception at Evansville’s Old Courthouse. Sanna threw herself into creating and designing the style and décor. Having Afghan and Persian cuisine was also important to them and a highlight of the night.

ARIEL & SHANE Fate and online dating brought Shane and Ariel together after she sent him a “wink” on Match.com. After meeting in person for a lunch date, both of them knew there was something magic about the other. Within 2 years they became engaged and Ariel began dreaming up a unique, beautiful take on a Harry Potter themed wedding. A longtime fan, she knew she wanted it to be rustic and classy to fit the forest backdrop of her mother’s private residence in Henderson, Kentucky. Each detail was lovingly made by herself and her mother, saving money and infusing their wedding with whimsical details and fun décor to reflect all things Hogwarts. Guests witnessed Shane and Ariel saying their vows under an arch with the book series’ most loving word, “Always.”

HANNA & SHAWN It was a warm night in July when the barber fell for the hairdresser. Shawn and Hanna had their first date at a quaint table at the Cork & Clever, in Evansville IN. (This came after what Hanna thought was a clever conversation starter on a dating site, 3 months earlier...) There was giggling, story telling, and never a lull in conversation. It was truly love at first sight, and Hanna had met her match. That same evening Shawn kissed Hanna at a local pub and she expressed to never wanting the night to end, and it hasn’t. To say they have been inseparable since meeting is an understatement. A love neither thought existed was found within their relationship, and now marriage. Wanting an intimate reception, they chose the Ballroom at Sauced located in Haynie’s Corner in Evansville. The joining of these two people has been especially magical for their children, Jaxon and Laney. They each now have a sibling, and couldn’t be happier!

TONYA & RYAN Love comes when you least expect it. Both Tonya and Ryan never thought they had found the love of their life when they randomly met while visiting mutual friends one evening. A week later, friends of theirs had them go on a double date, which neither of them realized was a date! Soon after, it was clear that the random person they had met had become the person they wanted to spend their life with. When planning their wedding, Tonya and Ryan wanted a place that was removed from distractions and allowed them to immerse themselves in the wedding experience and enjoy an intimate weekend with many family and friends who had come in from all over the country. Wilstem Ranch in French Lick, Indiana was the perfect choice with their rolling countryside, trails and cabins. Together, they all shared in the celebration of their marriage.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT

Knob Hill

TAVERN

Tucked upon a small hillside in Historic Newburgh, Indiana, lies the town’s oldest tavern. The Knob Hill Tavern, a family owned joint, offers a quiet, cozy, neighborhood atmosphere that has become a regular stop for locals and tourists alike. Since 1943, award winning hot fiddlers and the coldest brews have been served; and customers know to expect the highest of quality each and every time. The building that is now known as the Knob Hill Tavern was originally constructed in 1919 and was later remodeled into a restaurant in 1943. The property included gravel parking lots and red siding affixed to the building. The picturesque green and white striped awnings are one of the features still in existence today. In 1953, owner Richard Gerard Jr. moved into the small house just behind the Tavern. This house featured 1 bedroom, 1 bath and a 216 square foot porch. When current Tavern owner, Danny Kollker bought the property in 1991, the house became a rental property and would later morph into something more.

72 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

In 1991, Kollker made several improvements to the Tavern; including an addition to the kitchen, new restrooms and the beautiful outdoor terrace. Kollker stayed true to the original menu, especially the famous catfish fiddler recipe, and added the delicious pizzas and sandwiches we love today. Starting in 2016, Kollker began making plans to renovate the small house behind the Tavern. Today, the Knob Hill House is a quaint private events venue that is ideal for hosting reunions, birthday parties, small wedding receptions and business meetings. The Knob Hill House features a full bar, tables and chairs indoors and outdoors, TVs and a sound system; all within the Heart of Newburgh. A lush, outdoor patio space was added; allowing renters the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine with family and friends. The Knob Hill House continues the long time tradition of celebrating family, celebrating simplicity and serving up memorable experiences.

FINANCE

Do This

BEFORE BUYING A HOME

Most newly engaged couples have multiple decisions to make concerning the wedding; location, guest list and don’t forget the honeymoon! With all of these decisions it is easy to forget about finances. Newly engaged couples quite often do not think about finances until after they are married. Another important decision will include the purchase of your first home together. This may be the first major financial decision you make as a couple. I have listed some basics tips below to help reduce the stress of this process.

REVIEW YOUR CREDIT: If you want to receive the best rates possible you will need to have a credit

74 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

score of 740 or higher. This is an excellent time to check your credit reports to make sure it is in order. Your credit score can have a significant impact on your interest rate and your ability to be approved for a loan. Loans may be approved at lower credit scores, but may result in higher interest rates.

REVIEW FINANCES: Your housing payment will consume a large part of your income. It is very important to review how much money you have available for a down payment. I would suggest collecting information on funds available for down payment and income documentation. Lenders will normally expect your housing payment not to ex-

ceed 28% of your gross income and your total debt not to exceed more than 36%. Please keep in mind that you do not want to use all of your savings for a down payment.

OBTAIN PREQUALIFICATION FROM MORTGAGE LENDER: It is very advantageous when purchasing a new home to obtain a prequalification letter from a bank. This will indicate to your realtor and the sellers that you are approved and are serious about purchasing a home. A good loan officer will discuss what type of loans best fits your situation. It is important to seek out a knowledgeable lender to help you with the process. CHOOSE A REALTOR: It is important to work with a qualified realtor. A realtor can give you valuable information on neighborhoods, market trends and will help with negotiating the best price and paperwork on the purchase of your home.

FIND A HOME: Try to look at several homes that fit your needs and wants. Your realtor will help you with this process. It is important to remember that the purchase should be subject to a home and pest inspection. A home inspector will let you know if there are any major problems with home. The above tips are not an all-inclusive list, but it will help you start the process of finding a new home! Dirk Danks is an Evansville native and Reitz High School graduate. P L AY I N G F OR A CAUSE

In honor of the annual Alzheimer’s Association Blondes vs. Brunettes RivAlz Evansville game held each June, we styled this wedding dress shoot in conjunction with their colors purple and white. This year’s game was held on Saturday June 2, 2018, at Harrison High School and was presented by Raben Tires and The Women’s Hospital. The first RivAlz game was held in 2011 and since its inception has raised around $250K. The funds for the event go back to the Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter helping local families with education, supporting advance critical research studies into methods of treatment, assisting with the prevention and ultimately a cure, and helping to speak up for the needs and rights of those facing Alzheimer’s through their public policy initiatives.

The Alzheimer’s Association shares that: • Over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and it is projected to raise to 16 million by 2050. • The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is estimated to total $277 billion in 2018. • One in every three seniors that pass away, has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. It kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. • Alzheimer’s Disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Getting to Know

EVANSVILLE PEDICAB

Mary Allen of the Sixth Street Soapery is also the proprietor of Evansville Pedicab. As a fun transportation alternative for weddings and events, we wanted to find out more about her business! Here’s what she had to say.

HOW DID EVANSVILLE PEDICAB GET STARTED? I was inspired when I went on a trip to Savannah with my husband. We rode them everywhere downtown and enjoyed chatting with the local drivers; finding out cool tidbits about the community and enjoying the scenery while sitting back and relaxing. We enjoyed it so much, I thought, why don’t we have these in Evansville? I researched it on the way home and actually ordered two cabs before we made it back to Evansville. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT OFFERING THIS SERVICE IN OUR COMMUNITY? I LOVE getting to interact with people I would probably never meet otherwise. I also enjoy talking with folks from out of town and having the opportunity to share about Evansville and offer a positive and fun experience while they’re here. It brings joy! You can’t help but smile when you’re riding-or driving. WHERE DO PEOPLE NORMALLY RIDE AT IN THE PEDICAB? We typically stay downtown Evansville, Riverfront, Haynies Corner. We have gone to Franklin St. and have taken them to Newburgh and Boonville for events.

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE? For general rides from point A to B, we charge “Tips for Trips.” The average “Tip” is around $5-$10 Or you can reserve a cab for a night out for $25 for 30 minute ride. HOW WOULD THIS MAKE A GREAT ADDITION TO A WEDDING? It offers a unique and fun experience. When we’ve done weddings, it’s like a parade going through downtown. Everyone waves and yells “Congratulations!” It makes for adorable pics and unique drive away option. We put up the canopy, add a just married sign on the back of the cab and string cans on the back (if desired). All of our cabs are equipped with a bluetooth speaker so we can play a wedding themed playlist while they ride! The driver also wears black pants, white shirt and black bowtie!

Our area is rich, not only in lush forests, beautiful rivers and rolling fields; but also with some of the most gorgeous historic buildings around. Few regions have as many historic buildings open for wedding rentals as we do. We are so lucky! Infused with character, ambiance and amazing architecture, these beautiful buildings offer a timeless backdrop for your wedding day. When looking at venues with an important past, ask the venue coordinator for a brief history on the significance of

the building. You will be amazed at the stories and feel a connection with the past.
