That veil though – right!?! This stunning photo from our Roaring Good Time photoshoot was dreamed up and shot by Shillawna Ruffner of Shillawna Ruffner Photography. We’ve had visions of shooting a modern take on the 1920’s for years but never felt we had the right inspiration for it until we found the perfect dress…or should we say jumper! With sparkle, swag and fringe for miles, it screamed Modern Flapper and became the focal point for all our vendor styling. Shot at Evansville’s newest venue, City View Event Center, the color scheme and crafted atmosphere was an ideal setting, especially this moody, graphic wall that made this one-of-a-kind dress pop.

Reducing
YOUR WEDDING FOOTPRINT
For some couples, having a wedding that involves little waste, reuse of other items, implementing local vendors, and making eco-friendly choices is a high priority. A lot of trash can be generated just in one evening or afternoon at a wedding ceremony and/or reception, so being socially conscious is one responsible step in protecting our environment. Choosing local vendors also helps our area economy as well. Here are some ideas to help you reduce your wedding footprint…
•
CHOOSE INVITATIONS PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER OR SEED PAPER.
• CHOOSE LOCAL FLOWER GROWERS, AND CHOOSE IN SEASON FLOWERS. THE LESS FAR THE FLOWERS HAVE TO TRAVEL, THE LESS FUEL THAT IS USED AND THE LESS PACKAGING THAT IS WASTED.
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 3
•
CHOOSE BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES THAT CAN BE RESUED MORE THAN ONCE
•
CONSIDER PLANTS AS GIVEAWAY ITEMS SUCH AS SUCCULENTS, BULBS, OR HERBS
•
USE REAL PETALS OR LEAF PUNCHOUTS AS YOUR POST CEREMONY TOSS ITEMS VERSUS BLOWING BUBBLES OR THROWING RICE (THINK ABOUT THE TRASH GENERATED BY THE DISPOSED OF PLASTIC, AND RICE IS BAD FOR BIRDS)
•
REPURPOSE PALLET WOOD FOR SIGNAGE
•
MAKE YOUR BOUQUET OUT OF OLD BROOCHES
•
USE REAL SILVERWARE OVER PLASTIC SILVERWARE
•
USE REAL LINENS OVER PLASTIC TABLE CLOTHES
•
USE STEMWARE AND GLASSWARE OVER PLASTIC CUPS
•
CHOOSE PAPER STRAWS OVER PLASTIC ONES
•
CARPOOL AS MUCH AS YOU CAN FOR APPOINTMENTS BETWEEN VENUES
•
CHOOSE A COMBINED CEREMONY AND RECEPTION SITE SO PEOPLE AREN’T BURNING FUEL TRAVELING BACK AND FORTH
•
PUT OUT RECYCLE BINS AT YOUR EVENT

4 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
•
USE THRIFTED/REPURPOSED ITEMS WHENEVER/WHEREVER YOU CAN
•
DONATE LEFTOVER FOOD TO A LOCAL SHELTER OR DIVVY IT OUT AMONG THE BRIDAL PARTY OR GUESTS WHEN THE NIGHT IS DONE SO THAT NONE IS THROWN AWAY.
•
CONSIDER MAKING A CHARITABLE DONATION IN THE GUESTS’ NAME IN LIEU OF DISPOSABLE FAVORS.
•
CHOOSE A RING FROM AN ETHICAL SOURCE. REPURPOSE A FAMILY STONE, AND/OR STICK WITH BRANDS WHO PRACTICE SOCIALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE SOURCING OF THEIR STONES AND METALS.
•
GO WITH A SUSTAINABLE VENUE. THIS COULD BE ONE THAT GROWS MUCH OF THEIR OWN FOOD ONSITE, OR IT COULD BE ONE THAT ALREADY HAS SUCH A NATURAL BEAUTY THAT THERE ISN’T MUCH OF A NEED TO BRING IN A LOT OF DÉCOR.
•
AND FINALLY, CONSIDER RENTING REUSABLE ITEMS.
You don’t have to do everything on the list, but every little bit helps when it comes to protecting our environment and/or our communities. Choosing to make an impact can be fun and give you the opportunity to exercise your creativity, but it might also be inspiring, too! You just never know the next person who might take your idea to heart and learn from it, someone who might expound on it and take it one step further, and/ or what the final impact will eventually be! -Nikki Davis Engaged! ENGAGEMENT
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR
Engagement P hotos
Are you planning an engagement photo session with the love of your life? Engagement photos are a beautiful way to capture this exciting new step in your life and to be able to remember this beautiful moment of young love for a lifetime. What do you need to do next? 1. FIND A PHOTOGRAPHER, OF COURSE! Wedding photographers typically book a year to eighteen months in advance, so this is one of the first vendors you need to book. It's a really good idea to use the same photographer for both your engagement session and your wedding for multiple reasons: Your collection of images from your engagement session and your wedding will look cohesive if you use the same photographer and (the most important reason of all) your engagement session is the PERFECT time to break the ice with your photographer and get to know them better.
You will feel a million times more at ease (meaning you will look so much more natural in your photos) on your wedding day if you have had the chance to work with your photographer before all of the pressure is on. 2. DO YOUR RESEARCH If you are particular when it comes to your images and pricing, it is important to do your research. Start with a referral from friends or family or perform a simple web search for photographers in your area, or wherever you want your photos taken. Once you find a few whose work you love, check out their websites and definitely their social media! You'll get an instant feel for their style and their personality and be able to decide if you want to pursue things further with them. Don't be afraid to ask to see full engagement and wedding galleries. It's important to see the photographer's work in all kinds of lighting conditions and locations. Take the time to meet your favorite photographers in person or schedule ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 29
a Skype, FaceTime, or phone conference if you're not able to meet face to face. This will really give you a good idea if your personalities jive and which photographer is the right one to document two of the most photo-worthy moments of your life. 3. CHOOSE A DATE AND LOCATION If you find and book your photographer first thing, you should have enough time to have your pick of seasons. Decide if spring blossoms, sunny days and tall green grass, emblazoned foliage, or frosty scenery is important to you, and go from there. Engagement photos can be done anytime from the moment you are engaged, right up until two months before the wedding. (But let's face it, there's enough to do that close to your big day, so the earlier, the better!) A really lovely way to showcase your engagement is
30 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
by choosing a location that is meaningful to you both. Think about places that are special to you - like the place where you both grew up or went to school. Perhaps you met or were proposed to somewhere unique, you both love the forest, or there is a favorite past time you both enjoy. The more personal the location, the more emotion and love will emanate from you and shine through images. 4. CHOOSE WHAT TO WEAR I always recommend that you dress up for this very special moment! It's not every day that you have professional portraits made, and you will never be sad if you make the decision to glam it up. I adore a long, flowing dress on ladies, and every man looks dapper in a well-tailored suit. If wearing a dress and suit aren't your idea of fun, think about how you will feel about your session years in the future. You can always bring a second, more casual, outfit to change into, but I promise you won't regret putting in the extra effort to dress to
the nines. Make sure everything you wear fits well and is as comfortable as possible. Keep the weather in mind when selecting your wardrobe, and make sure to bring plenty of cold water in the warmer months and something warm to drink and hand warmers in the colder months. Flip flops or furry slip-on boots are great to have on hand to slip on if any walking between sets of photos in is order. 5. INVEST IN HAVING YOUR HAIR AND MAKE UP DONE BY A PROFESSIONAL I cannot emphasize enough how important this is! Again, your engagement session is one of the highlights of your life and one of the most fun events during your wedding planning process! Not only will having your hair and makeup done make for a fun and memorable experience, it will also ensure you are looking and feeling your best and that you
are completely camera ready! I swear hair stylists use witchcraft when it comes to getting hair to look amazing and styles to LAST through all kinds of circumstances. And an experienced makeup artist knows exactly how to make you look like the best version of yourself and feel like a million bucks! If you feel great about how you look, that confidence will show in your photos! Plus, it's a great way to get a head start on finding a hair stylist and makeup artist for your wedding day! Win/win! 6. STYLE YOUR SESSION The next time you page through a Bridal magazine, or any magazine for that matter, pay attention to your favorite editorial spread. It probably caught your eye because of the special attention that was paid to detail and how those details helped communicate the story that was being told. I always encourage my couples to not only select a location that is meaningful to them or their relationship, but to also
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 31
incorporate items into their engagement session that will help tell their story. It can be as simple as bringing along a special blanket or heirloom quilt to wrap in or sit on, a favorite dessert or food to nibble on, or an item that represents a shared passion or past time. I've had couples bring along banners, special coffee mugs, and floral arrangements. Don't be afraid to go all out either! If you have an idea for a full-on styled session I'm sure your photographer would be happy to help you bring it to life! From a picnic at your favorite park to a tandem bike ride in the setting sun, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Just make sure that whatever you incorporate makes sense for you and your relationship and that all parties involved are on board with your vision. (Another perk with styling your session is by including "props" to work with, it gives idle (and often nervous) hands something to do. Which again, leads to more natural looking posing.)
32 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
BONUS TIPS Make sure to eat before you come, bring bug repellent, and hit the restroom before you begin. It's never fun having to rush through a session because someone is uncomfortable. We like to enjoy the whole experience! Fur babies are always welcome to join in on the fun, but make sure to bring along a handler, aka someone your furry friend is comfortable with, who can manage your pet while they aren't being photographed and take them home when their photo ops are finished. Lastly, relax and have fun! Professional photographers have your best intentions (and good sides) in mind, so there is no need to stress. It always turns out more fun than people anticipate, especially if all the above steps are followed. Don't forget to smile :) To find out more about Shillawna Ruffner and her photography, go to www.shillawnaruffner.com or on Facebook @shillawnaruffnerphotography

DESTINATIONS & HONEYMOONS
Greece
When thinking of Greece, immediate images of ancient ruins, mythical gods, whitewashed villages and amazing sunsets come to mind. Greece has a plethora of ancient ruins to explore, the most famous being the Acropolis and the Parthenon both located in Athens. As an American, it is difficult to comprehend that these structures are over 2400 years old! Greece is also home to ancient monasteries, open-air theaters and Byzantine castles. It is interesting that Greece has a Mediterranean climate close to the coastal areas of California. Winter can be cool and humid with warm and dry summers. Surprisingly, Northwestern Greece can even have snowfall during the winter. Being a country with approximately 6000 islands, there is much to explore. Two of my favorite islands are Mykonos and Santorini. Mykonos offer adorable seaside restaurants, a picturesque whitewashed village, great shopping and is know for its’ nightlife. Santorini is a very unique destination built on the rim of a volcano crater. It
40 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
is famous for stunning sunsets and whitewashed villages with blue-domed churches. This diverse destination also offers a variety of activities for the sports enthusiasts. For example, on the island of Crete, you can canyon hike, mountain climb, explore caves, scuba dive and other water activities. I can’t talk about Greece without talking about the food! It is a seafood lovers paradise! They offer typical Mediterranean cuisine featuring fresh fish, octopus, calamari, Greek salad, fresh olives, amazing feta cheese and of course, famous dolmades (stuffed grape leaves). And don’t forget to top off a great meal with some Ouzo – Greece’s most popular alcoholic drink with a distinct licorice flavor. As you can see, Greece offers something for every traveler! “For the wise is easy to go anywhere. Photography by Shillawana Ruffner Every mother of the bride or groom who steps foot in my boutique has the same expression on her face- utter exhaustion mixed with equal parts frustration. She’s screaming “Help me! Please let this be over!” from her eyes, even though she maintains a polite smile on her face. Most wouldn’t notice that she’s not exactly enjoying herself because she has come from decades of experience in putting her own feelings behind those whose happiness she cares most about. Not only has she completed years of child-raising, she has also gone through mostly every detail of the nuptials with her soon-to-be-wed child without blurting out “but what the HELL ABOUT ME?!”. She has pushed her concerns for being cohesive, appropriate, and elegant deep down under the 42 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
In order to understand this unique shopping experience, you must first understand the market for what professionals in the business cryptically call “moms.” Dresses that embody everything a mother wants to be are slim pickins,’ which often times has a mom feeling like she was dressed by either the red hat society (great-grandmas with style, for those of you who weren’t aware) or like a young Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman… but BEFORE she met the guy. Although neither option is quite as dramatic as I just eloquently described, looking like a grandma or having too much cleavage- is simply not acceptable for the distraught moms who just want to look the age they actually feel. Aside from the fear that she is about to be robbed of any residual youth by the style options presented to her, moms also desperately want to blend in. The WORST thing she can imagine is being “too much.” Not only could it make for awkward photos- she could potentially upset the bride, completely ruining the marriage along with any chance of ever having a grandchild. In all sincerity, the mom’s only prerogative is making the bride happy- even if she has to sacrifice her own desires (she’s trained for this, remember?). I always tell the moms in my store something that she desperately needs to hear: You are important in
this equation. You raised a child worthy of the love we are preparing to celebrate, you are the matriarch of the family, and most importantly, you matter. Your wardrobe should tastefully reflect your own personal celebration of entrusting your baby to another’s love. You deserve to share a bit of the spotlight, and you should feel damn good about yourself while you’re in it. Some suggestions I have for you might make things a little easier: • Find a complimentary color to what the wedding party is wearing- If they are in Blush consider Burgundy, Silver, or Navy. You don’t want to match but you definitely want a cohesive color palette! • Shop Bridesmaids sections! (You will need a little more time to order in the specific color you want so please don’t pull the typical “the wedding is
this weekend” mom-move. These also tend to run significantly lower in price compared to designated “moms lines”. • Shop with a local boutique instead of a big-box store. These little guys work with moms on a regular basis AND perform the ordering. Someone who understands moms is far more likely to have something stocked for you. • Schedule a one-on-one consultant with our bridal staff (shameless plug) because even if we don’t sell you a dress, our true mission is helping you find what makes you feel like the amazing lady you are! May your heels be comfortable and your waterproof mascara hold up to its claim! You’ve almost completed the greatest challenge of your life with poise and class. Don’t be afraid to shine a little bit. -Kassy Lauer, Paparazzi Glamour & Gowns

ABBI & STEPHAN Grandma’s know best. For several years Abbi and Stephan shared a friendship based on their faith and passion for music. Even though Abbi insisted that she and Stephan were always just friends, her grandmother often told her there was something special between them beyond friendship. Of course, she proved right and Abbi and Stephan’s friendship grew deeper, and slowly they fell in love. When planning their big day, Abbi dreamed of a fairytale wedding and found the perfect venue, the Bauerhaus. Feeling like they stepped back in time to an old forest complete with an enchanted cottage hidden in the woods, they could not have been happier with the setting of their outdoor ceremony and indoor reception. Sadly, Abbi’s grandmother passed away a year before the wedding, but they both felt her there with them, a special part to the beginning of their happily ever after.

THE LOV E
JENNIFER & GRANT Love was in the air the night Jennifer and Grant knew they were meant for more than friendship. Introduced in the fall of 2015 through mutual acquaintances, Jennifer candidly invited Grant to be her date to her sister’s wedding that winter. That evening, they danced the night away and knew from then on, they were destined to be together. One of their first weekends away, they made the trip to French Lick, Indiana. So, it was only natural when planning their wedding, that they picked the historic hotel as the venue for their wedding reception. Married at the quaint, Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church, their ceremony followed with cocktails outdoors in the French Lick Lower Gardens. Their beautiful reception was held in the Windsor ballroom where the couple again danced the night away, but now as husband and wife.

They began dating in 2012 and continued their relationship while Jacob joined the Marines and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2017. Apart for a year, Ashlyn and Jacob would write to each other often, counting down the days when he would return home. Jacob popped the question at Mystique Winery surrounded by both their families. Both are “old souls” and incorporated vintage elements into their décor while also displaying several family heirlooms. LEZLIE & TRISTIAN It is not common to introduce to your friends someone you just met as your future wife, yet that is just what Tristian did to Lezlie the very first time they ever met. She was so embarrassed she walked away. Luckily for both of them, Tristian’s confidence in their fate held true, and 3 years later, he officially asked Lezlie to become his wife in a huge family surprise. They had just closed on a house and went by to see it again. On opening the door, all their family and friends were there as he presented Lezlie with champagne, roses and popped the question. For their wedding day, they wanted an intimate evening with just their closest family and friends gathered together. Fun F O R TH E
LITT L E ONES
By Jena Eichler, River Top Event Coordinating, LLC
You’ve decided to invite kids to your wedding and reception. Great! Kids are fun and always have a silly face and killer dance moves. They can also cause some anxiety with wedding planning. Will they behave, will they cry, will their parents pay attention to them throughout the night, oh gosh they could break something or even worse get into the cake before we cut it; these are all valid feelings and thoughts. The best solution is to have a dedicated spot or table just for them! A table far away from the cake, presents, and yet near the dance floor is the key location for this activity spot. If you know that most of the kids are school age, you may want to forgo the linen and opt for a big sheet of butcher paper (the big white/tan roll). Another way to make this kids table fun is set out their own cake or cupcakes once your cake has been cut. This will make them feel super special and cut down on trips to the main cake table, which reduces the amount of icing tasting. There are a few things you need to consider when stocking this kids table. What to have and what not to put on the table. They may also
want to eat at this table too but do not require them to be separated from their parents. Include: crayons, workbooks, coloring pages, blocks, bubbles, action figures and if you are feeling adventurous playdough and Legos for the older kids. Do Not Include: table decorations, fancy linens, anything breakable, scissors, glue, tape, stamps, ink, markers. Anything messy or that could cause damage to the event space or tables. All these fun things can be found throughout the year. Hit up your local craft and dollar stores after major holidays (Valentines, 4th of July, Christmas) and back to school shopping for the best deals. Do not worry if the colors or theme do not match the whole wedding, the kids will not notice and will be more involved with the cool table. Remember the reason why you invited the kiddos to the wedding, they are fun! Having a dedicated table for them will help reduce stress and add smiles to everyone’s faces, heck even big kids love kids tables too. ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 71

MENSWEAR
DRESSING UP
The Dads
For this issue, we collaborated with our friends from the West Side Nut Club to show off Father of the Bride and Groom styles from Dillard’s. The styled shoot took place at the new Myriad Brewing Company located in downtown Evansville. The West Side Nut Club is one of Evansville’s most civic-minded and unique organizations in the area. Its humble beginnings were in 1921 when a small group of businessmen and merchants on the west side of Evansville, who frequently lunched together, decided that an organization was needed to push the interests of their side of town. Officers were elected, a specific time and place of meeting were agreed upon, and a set of aims and principles were adopted. The present generation is unsure of the derivation of the distinctive appellation: Nut Club. Did the founders really think of themselves as a group of “nuts?” Oh, perish the thought, their descendants say. They really considered themselves the acorns from which the future “mighty oaks” would grow.
In any event, the West Side Nut Club grew and prospered. Its list of achievements and projects accomplished lengthens each year. Every October the West Side Nut Club organizes and sponsors a community festival called the Fall Festival. This is a week-long event on the west side along Franklin Street with free entertainment, carnival attractions, over 135 not-for-profit food booths, amateur talent competitions and three parades. This event attracts over 200,000 people to the West Franklin Street and is considered to be one of the largest street festivals in the United States. Since its beginning in 1921, the West Side Nut Club has donated over $5.7 million to youth organizations, Evansville schools, the University of Southern Indiana and other noteworthy community organizations. In addition to the Fall Festival event, the club hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt, a Street Cruise-In, Santa Land and completes a Spring Project within the community.

Burdette Park’s
‘O DAY DISCOVERY LODGE
Burdette Park was founded in 1936 and named after Everett Burdette, a World War One Hero who lost his life during his service. Mr. Burdette was the first Vanderburgh resident to have lost his life during the war. Throughout the next decade workers from the WPA began constructing bridges, buildings, and trails over the course 40 acres. (Now over 180 acres). By the mid 1950’s the park had even welcomed a saltwater based swimming facility. The saltwater pool was converted to a standard Olympic size swimming pool in 1961. Burdette Park would go on to feature several attractions throughout the years. These attractions included a roller rink, mini golf course, and even batting cages. Just like any other recreational venue, Burdette Park continues to change. The park now features a 3.1 mile paved trail that links to the University of Southern Indiana, challenging BMX track, a full Aquatic Center featuring 4 water slides and spray park, and also several of the areas most desired entertainment

CHELSEA & CHRIS Soulmates. That is what Chelsea and Chris found in each other as they took their vows in Sand Key Park in Clearwater, Florida. Like many couples, the idea of a destination wedding on the beach was a dream come true. To make it even more special, their 40 closest family and friends joined them there for a week’s vacation leading up the wedding. With their French bulldog Pippa in tow, they had their ceremony with the sand, waves and beautiful views as their setting. One month later, they made sure to celebrate with those who couldn’t make it to Clearwater with a reception in Chelsea’s hometown of Morganfield, Kentucky. Getting the best of both worlds, Chris and Chelsea had loved ones to share in both celebrations.

Darla
I N M E M O RY
This past week, we lost one of our own. Darla Smith was a beloved fixture of the local wedding vendor community and the Northside Evansville, Jacobsville neighborhood initiative. Darla owned Daily’s bakery for over 30 years and was a driving force behind the renovation of North Main Street. She is remembered as a woman of substance, kindness, generosity and hard work. In the 80’s and 90’s Darla and her team would create 5-10 wedding cakes a weekend, providing local couples in the Tri-state with amazingly decadent cakes. In the past 2 decades she continued providing wedding cakes and pastries but also involved herself with serving Jacobsville, her business neighborhood. Not content to simply work her business, she wanted to give back and began mentoring local neighborhood kids and those a part of the Dream Center, an area non-profit that serves underpriveledged children living in the area. She welcomed countless children into her bakery, teaching them cooking, baking and how to run a business. Those she did not mentor, she cared for
with the gift of cookies, treats and sometimes even flour so they could make meals for their own families. It was a common site for clients planning their cakes with her, to see children breeze in, completely at home with Darla, asking for a treat then hugging her on their way out. Darla was a woman who always chose the good of others over any self-benefit. Known affectionately as “The Matriarch of North Main”, she was a huge advocate for the renovation of North Main Street even knowing that it would cause loss to her business during the year of construction. She is known to so many in our area as a generous business owner, a caring hand and most of all, a woman of faith. She worked everyday to live her life as Christ would, loving those around her no matter their background or circumstances. For us though, she was a dear friend. While publically, she is lauded for her good works and community endeavors, we remember her most for the quiet times when we stopped in to chat at the bakery, for the out-of-this-world canolas she made and the hilarious ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 97
loving memories she shared of her beautiful mother and Italian upbringing in Chicago. We remember the creative planning sessions for dreamy cakes to photograph for our inspirations shoots, the evening dinners and get-togethers where her hugs and laughs were infectious. We remember the shoulder to cry on and encouraging words when hard times and grief were shared. We remember her joy in our accomplishments, new babies and family victories. We remember her doting love for her children and grandchildren, her dear friendships and her excitement for traveling. We remember Darla, a mother-figure and beloved friend. She was so much more than her accomplishments. She changed lives, one loving hug at a time. Editors, JoElle Knight & Nikki Davis
